To be precise, you have to uninstall GIMP first, then run the installer
with the /32 parameter - the parameter is ignored if GIMP is already
installed (and you only have to do this once - it'll be remembered for
future installs; this is also only intended to be used as a workaround -
32-bit version receives much less testing and is mainly there to support
the scanner plugin).

I am guessing it may work if you install the optional Wintab drivers from
there: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49498

Basically GIMP only has support for Wintab drivers (and in particular not
the new Ink API which Microsoft is now pushing forward; though we'd love to
have support but that would require someone to step up and implement this in
GTK+).

Note that some people (on bug reports) have problems with higher versions of
the Surface Pro and Microsoft does not mention anymore optional Wintab
drivers from v5 and above. Therefore it is possible that GIMP may not work
on recent versions, but you may still be fine with the version 4 which you
have.

Of course this is all just a lot of assumptions from what I could gather
from the web, since I have not such a device (and I think none of other GIMP
developers have one either).

If you manage to get GIMP working on the surface pro 4, please tell us.
This will be an interesting input.
Also you may want to try with the version GIMP 2.10.6, and not the latest
2.10.8, as there is a bug which affected some tablets on Windows (no idea if
it would affect this one too, but no harm on being double sure).

You can force the Gimp installer to use the 32 bit files it contains. Use the
/32 switch

For others, how to determine if your Windows is 32/64 bit.

64 bit has both "Program Files" **and** "Program Files (x86)" folders. 32bit
only "Program Files".

Whatever you choose, I recommend un-installing Gimp first using the Windows
uninstall menu. Then check to see if anything remains in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2
If not empty, delete it.

Which version to use? There are some Windows installations that have issues with
current 32 bit Gimp. I would try the previous version 2.10.6 - this might change
for the better, in the future.

https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.10/windows/gimp-2.10.6-setup-1.exe

Go to where you downloaded the file, open a terminal and run the installer

gimp-2.10.6-setup-1.exe /32

The same will apply if you want to install Gimp 2.8 that way - the last version

https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.8/windows/gimp-2.8.22-setup.exe

A screenshot attached with some hints.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.8 Keyboard shortcuts failure

2018-12-12 Thread Fashoo
All GIMP keyboard shortcuts suddenly stopped working. I am unable to turn them
back on. Shortcuts work fine in all other applications.

I am running GIMP 2.8.22 on Ubuntu 18.04. Everything is vanilla.

This has happened twice now. Both times, shortcuts worked perfectly fine, for
weeks, then suddenly toggled off. I dug through the menus looking for a toggle,
tried the option to reset shortcuts, but that didn't fix it. I uninstalled and
reinstalled the software, and that didn't help either. I finally cleared it by
reloading Ubuntu from scratch and installing. That bought me about a week of
functionality, and now shortcuts are dead again.

Please help.

Anyway. I've recently been working on getting used to 2.10.8 and I believe I'm
missing a fundamental step in saving brushes I make, or .abr brushes (from
ps.cc). Nor can I modify the hardness of a brush. I can't go below .25 hardness
and I prefer 0 most of the time.

I use an old crusty laptop with a touchpad, 12gb ram, 1tb hd...onboard cheapo
graphics card with a sad little 2gb video ram.

It's a small cheap old laptop but has always easily run GIMP (well, some G'mic
filters will trial it).

I've placed my brushes in C:/prog files/gimp2/share/gimp/2.0/brushes; I got this
from a tutorial online.

but all I see are installed brushes, not the ones I make or .abr brush sets.

Please help me figure this out, I 'm pretty sure the path is wrong.

There is a portable Gimp 2.10 for Windows try:

www.partha.com (64 bit only) or https://samjcreations.blogspot.com (64/32 bit)
or https://portableapps.com/ (32 bit only)

Just shows that you should take those online tutorials with a pinch of salt.

Gimp 2.6 / 2.8 / 2.10 all the same, any resource, including brushes, goes in
your Gimp profile. For Windows 2.10 this is in a hidden folder, you need to
make Appdata visible in Win explorer.

C:\Users\your-name\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\brushes

Portable versions will be different, because they are portable, Look in Edit ->
Preferences -> Folders > Brushes for the path.

PS .abr brushes will work providing they are not very recent, try and see.

Why can you not export (save) your brushes? ***C:/prog
files/gimp2/share/gimp/2.0/brushes*** is marked as read-only. The place to
export is the Gimp profile.

>Nor can I modify the hardness of a brush. I
>can't go below .25 hardness and I prefer 0 most of the time.

I think you can, Attached screenshot of my fuzzy .vbr brush has zero hardness. A
little fuzzier than the stock brushes.

[Gimp-user] new layers are transparent, grayed

2018-12-12 Thread kdot
I duplicated a layer, and it comes up transparent, and grayed.
I imported a new layer, and it also is transparent.
This has never happened before!
When I move the background to the top, it is also becomes grayed and
transparent!
The layers are set to 100% opacity (default)
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

With such a large percentage reduction you are always going to lose a lot of
detail. There is absolutely no way around this. You just can't represent the
same amount of information in such a small number of pixels.

The site as it was, is not coming back. There is an archive of (most of) it.

https://github.com/pixlsus/registry.gimp.org_static

You can download the whole thing or browse through the files section.

Remember this is all old stuff. At best made for Gimp 2.8, most older and no
good for Gimp 2.10 without adjustments.

No universal collection that I know of. Trawl through the other Gimp forums for
individual plugins

Useful updates of the old favourites here: https://samjcreations.blogspot.com/

Scroll down the page looking for ***Filtres anciens pour Gimp 2.10 64 bits***
entries There are 4 or 5 useful collections.

Thanks so much for solving my problem:) The answer was there under my nose all

"straightening using the measure tool" and "straightening by corrective
rotation", then using clipping with the "crop to result " option gives a
result in which "Image: crop to content" gives what I want.

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 autocrop equivalent

2018-12-12 Thread mgwong
Dear Helpers

I have recently updated to Gimp 2.10 (under Ubuntu 18.04). I use Gimp
extensively for processing photos. One very common problem is having the photo
tilted by a few degrees. It is easy to straighten it using the rotate tool or
the new way via the measurement tool. In Gimp 2.8 it used to be very easy to
crop off any excess using the autocrop tool. However nothing I have tried works
that way in Gimp 2.10.

I created a small image to demonstrate what happens. On the left is my "photo"
a bit out of whack;). IN the middle is a screen shot of the image after
rotation. The third is what I would like, which autocrop under Gimp 2.8 would
create. In GImp 2.10, if I "crop to content" (under Image menu item) then I
get an error message saying "cannot crop because the image is already cropped to
content". Using "crop to selection" then the grey border inside the yellow
dotted lines disappears which is what one would expect. I would like the crop
to be such that it crops off the outer section plus all the transparent
sections.

I have searched for an answer but could not get the results as described in
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/20922-crop-to-selection-not-working

Any help would be much appreciated:)

Thanks

It is the alpha channel which interferes.

1. Using the Gimp 2.10 measure tool for straightening, recommend set "Clipping"
to clip.

2. Apply that and then consider the background colour. If it is white as your
example the skip the next. Photographs often have an off-white value .

3. If needed, colour-pick the background color and then Layer -> Transparency ->
Remove alpha channel. That should give a solid uniform background.

4. Apply zealous crop or crop to content.

A better way for the background colour might be using the
resynthesizer/heal-transparency plugins. (***don't use*** the registry-plugin
deb package for this, grab them separately) then remove alpha.

Apologies, as usual not paying enough attention to what you want as an outcome.

You could try this plugin StraightCrop. Comes from the now defunct
gimp-plugin-registry site. Tried in Kubuntu 16.04 Gimp 2.10.8 flatpak so should
work on your 18.04 installation.

The plugin attached, unzip and put in your Gimp user profile
~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins

The permissions should already be set but check for executable anyway.

In action, make a straight path then menu Image -> Transform -> Straighten &
Crop

[Gimp-user] Luminosity Masks

2018-12-12 Thread Rustbucket
I have been trying to get to grips with luminosity masks for a couple of months
now - on and off. After reading the Gimp tutorial and watching a couple of
You Tube vids I think/thought I understood them :-)

On a photo where I wanted to lighten the darker bits I produced a set of
luminosity channels ie L, LL, LLL D, DD, DDD all went well and seemed to be
working. I took the DD channel and produced a layer mask with the idea of
lightening this part of the image. My problem, which has me tearing what hair I
have, is that - when I apply increasing the exposure, or lighten or darken
modules, from the colour tab, while it lightens it also introduces a colour cast
! And further to this if I then try to turn the photo into a Mono, the colour
cast still remains although the original photo turns mono. I have thought about
this and tried whatever I can think of, nothing has worked and I am at a
complete loss.

Hope I have explained my problem well, I have run out of ideas and would be
grateful if some knowledgeable person could point me in the right direction.

Best Wishes - Jn

Re: [Gimp-user] interactive batch processing

2018-12-12 Thread Ofnuts

On 12/9/18 7:50 PM, Gary Aitken wrote:
In the past I have interactively batch processed images via a shell
script

that invokes gimp for each image.  This is both inconvenient and slow.
Inconvenient because there are parameters I need to enter into some
python-fu

scripts that are the same for each of the images, and slow because of the
gimp startup and shutdown each time.

Is there a way to do one of the following:

A. Start gimp with a list of file names to process, and have it load only
the first on the list.  Then when one quits or closes the image, load
   the next one, etc?

B. I can feed the list of file names to a python-fu script, which then
can

open and display the image.  Is there a way for a python-fu script to
wait for, or be notified of, the closing of an image display? This
would allow the script to effectively pause and allow processing
before

opening each successive image.  gimp-context-push/pop seem like they
may somehow enable this but it's not clear to me how they are used.

It seems like gimp-display-get-window-handle might be useful somehow, if
there were a means to be notified when the window is destroyed.

A) my own ofn-file-next  script may help if the files are in some
recognizable numerical sequence (IMG_678.JPG, IMG_679.JPG,
IMG_690.JPG)(some holes in the sequence are allowed). You can assign it
to some keyboard shortcut and it will export/close the current image,
and load the next in the sequence. Typically you start Gimp, usin
File>Ope, to open the first file in th eseqquence, and hit the shortcut
to advance to the next file. Available here:
.

This, combined with the "Repeat last filter" (Ctrl-F) (at the top of the
"Filters" menu, repeats the last filter on the current image with the
same parameters), should make you process your image sequence rather
quickly (two keystrokes per image).

B) You can write a script that reads a list of files (or lists files in
a directory), and loads each file, applies a filter, and saves the
result. But you don't really change the behavior of the initial script.
gimp_context_{push|pop} have nothing to do with this, they are used to
save/restore the paint context (FG/BG colors, gradient, brush... etc).
An example here:

There is also a "BIMP" Gimp plugin (the B is for "Batch") that is
supposed to be able to run Gimp commands over a series of files. I don't
know how well it supports a random filter.

GIMP can copy/pasted data from clipboard, same as most applications
