Did you look at the image? Although there's evidence of dot screen
atrefacts, that'snot what is being referred to. In addition, the
stripes change direction on the second scan, suggesting they are not
coming from the actual postcard.

The moire pattern is without a doubt, from scanning a litho print which
is microscopic patterns of different size colored dots that mix in the
eye to make the color. If the scanner or camera lens is sharp enough and
the autofocus accurate enough, it can be quite a problem. you may be
able to reduce or eliminaate it with what ever is in the toolbox to
reduce the unwanted sharpness, which should blend the dot pattern away
if done in the right amount and size of the blend. Ideally, the size of
the blend should match the size of the dot pattern but tolerances in
paper positioning as the printer lays each ink color may make this
difficult to balance without adversly effecting the overall sharpness.

Be aware that copyright info may be hidden, invisible to the eye in this
dot pattern. And it is considered valid proof of a violation.

Well, it's not moiré from the glass.

It seems to be a scanning artefact introduced by the scanner. But you say it
doesn't happen with scans of images on plain or matte paper.
try putting a black card over the postcard before you lower the lid. Also
check your scanner settings.

If that doesn't work, you could try photographing the glossy postcard with a
camera. With some fridge magnets you could stick it vertically to the side
of something metallic in good light, like your refrigerator or your car.
Then crop out or clone out the magnets from the photograph.

Start by checking to see if the scanner driver has an option to
compensate for different paper types. It looks as if the sensor is
reflecting off the paper.

I haven't experienced this, but i probably have a different scanner.

Re: [Gimp-user] Google Chrome OS

Disclaimer - I haven't tested out linux on Chrome OS, though I've played
with Chrome OS on a spare laptop. so you'll have to do the heavy lifting.

Chrome OS has had the ability to run linux apps for quite a while. So,
first enable linux apps on your Chromebook. This should help:
https://opensource.com/article/20/9/linux-chromebook

Then once you've done that, it "should" be as simple as "sudo apt-get
install gimp".

Hope this helps. If not, please let me know.

Thanks,

Hi Matthew. In the old days Chrome OS was its own platform,
but from what i see now they have the option to turn on Linux in settings.
If you dont have the option to turn on Linux you wont be able to do it.
There are actually many tutorials out there to replace the Chrome OS with
Linux,
that's a lot more complicated. I hope you have the Linux option, because
then you could install a lot more
Linux apps. The way I learned about Unix or Linux then, was when Macs
changed over to Unix based,
and then they had the command mode and I went on from there.
Let us know if it works.

Re: [Gimp-user] Google Chrome OS

2021-05-10 Thread JEFFRY KILLEN
As I understand it, the Graphic User Interface for Linux is X Windows. That
would need to be present.
In Mac OS, Linux compatibility is obtained via Apples version of X Windows;
X11. There may be a
similar accommodation for Chrome OS. Perhaps you can get some guidance with
this issue via
Google Chrome OS user support and/or Samsung user support.

Hello Matthew,

Linux is more than just a program, it's the base (called "kernel") of a
whole operating system (GNU/Linux, there are many flavors of it).

If your plan is to continue using Chrome OS, I would suggest exploring
options other than GIMP.

If you feel adventurous, you can try to switch to Linux and use GIMP there.
Your life will never be the same again though :)

but it did not work. I know there is something called Linux that is
available to download on the chromebook, I just don't know anything about
it and didn't really care, until now. If I get this Linux program on my
chromebook will I be able to download GIMP?

Thanks
Matthew

Re: [Gimp-user] Golden Text Bump-Mapping in 2.10.22

2021-05-10 Thread Dave Babcock via gimp-user-list
Hi Simon,

Thank you so much for getting back to me with this.

Even though the tools are located in different places now, with encouragement
that it should still work in 2.10 somehow, without having to add in special
plugins, I've gone through the steps several times more, and I got it close to
what I am looking for one time now.
I just have to try to get it to do it again, and the remember all the steps I
did, so I can use them multiple times. So far repeating it again is a challenge.

Thank you very much for posting the illustrations and instructions.

Dave Babcock

I suspect that this is still possible, although I did not try it in
quite a long time...

Hm, the "Lighting Effects" should be shipped together with the GIMP. I
just started it on a somewhat currente developers version. And while
there was a crash lurking in the background I suspect that it will work
OK in the 2.10 release.

The curves tool is certainly there and works.

heh, maybe I should start my own youtube career :)

I hope this helps,
Simon

[Gimp-user] Golden Text Bump-Mapping in 2.10.22

2021-05-10 Thread Dave Babcock via gimp-user-list
To anyone who knows,

I am trying to learn how to do gold text on GIMP.

I found an example Simon Budig did apparently some time ago located here.
https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Golden_Text/

And also located here:
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/golden.html

I really like the top text effect. I've been trying to learn how to do text
like this for a while now. It can be seen blown up
here:http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/pics/golden/render1.gif
[http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/pics/golden/render1.gif]

How can this be done in verson 2.10?
Will this plug in being used here work in it?
Or are there now built in tools that can do the same thing?

I tried the tips in 2.10, but don't know how to even try to add the plugin,
where it might be found, or if it would even work in this 2.10 version of GIMP.

If you know of a video that shows how to do this effect like this, that would
be best for me. I've been looking for one, but not spotted it yet.

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Thanks for considering this,

Dave Babcock

Re: [Gimp-user] scan-mirrage-effect-Problem with postcard

2021-05-10 Thread Rick Strong

Well, it's not moiré from the glass.

It seems to be a scanning artefact introduced by the scanner. But you say it
doesn't happen with scans of images on plain or matte paper.
try putting a black card over the postcard before you lower the lid. Also
check your scanner settings.

If that doesn't work, you could try photographing the glossy postcard with a
camera. With some fridge magnets you could stick it vertically to the side
of something metallic in good light, like your refrigerator or your car.
Then crop out or clone out the magnets from the photograph.

Hi folks,

i'm trying to digitalis a postcard composed out of 4 different photos
(without access to the original). To get the highest resolution possible
i bought me a scanner, but while working grate on normal paper, its got
problems with that glossy postcard-paper i would like to remove
digitally. I scanned the postcard once horizontally and once vertically
in 600 dpi photo mode (see both layers). I rotated one layer and
positioned it roughly, but i am not in search for a complex ai based
filter that removes distortions by combining both scans in a complicated
way, the two layers is just to state my issue.

My question is, is there any filter i can use to remove this
rainbow-like lines in one of the layers and if so, how could i
accomplish this things with gimp.

Ill try to attach the file (ca. 40.8 MB xcf file) here, if this dosnt
work you can download it here:
