Dale, I really appreciate the nice way you asked to be removed from the list. I'm not the list owner and can't remove you, but the form to unsubscribe is on the page that "List membership", below, takes you to. In fact I tried to unsubscribe your email address for you. Re: [Gimp-user] Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'
It has never occurred to me to use GIMP to do screenshots. At face value, that sounds like extra work, kind of like using WORD to do screenshots. I use Screenshot Captor, for Windows 7. It is excellent, and has all the options you need. You can select, crop, resize, and do some other things I've not had to do, and save it in quite a variety of formats. It even saves it in its own screen and then you can just open the program and drag and drop to email screenshots. Ubuntu has good screenshot programs available through the software manager, and I like them as well. But what version of Windows are you using? Ofnuts' guess brings to mind the fact that Windows 8/ 10 has serious identity confusion; it often thinks it's a tablet. Can't get the mouse pointer when doing a screenshot of the whole screen - really? LOL! You know, you could get a second hard drive and try out one of the Ubuntu flavors. Unity most closely resembles Windows 8, and Kubuntu most resembles Windows XP, and if you add the Cairo dock (requires up to date video processor and its own Linux drivers if it has them), it resembles Windows 7. Unity won't run if the video processor isn't up to date either, and it can be hard with gnome. But if you've got Windows 8, the video processor is up to date, because it's a new computer. Re: [Gimp-user] Need a little help!
To be sure, I could figure out how to do it if there were enough of the button to clone around the labels, but there probably isn't. One could just color the buttons with any old thing, or color them black and then recolor and decorate them. You could do that in Gimp with a few layers. It depends on how much shading and shadow is on the buttons. I too have found the text tool hard to deal with in GIMP. You really can't do anything else on the same layer you create a text box. let alone create more than one text box. The text layers are special because you can edit the text later on, unless you apply any filter that can convert it to a image layer. If an example has 2 segments it is 2; if an example has 18 segments it is 18. This one has 6 segments so it is 6. First three columns are left point, right (end point), and point where the gradient changes - and if the blended colors are close where it is doesn't matter. Next are the left color in RGB decimal. Following is a number that I don't know what it represents, and probably it is maximum at 1.00. Following is the rgb code for the right color, then the number that I don't know what it means. Following that are four 0's I understand noone knows what they mean but leave them alone. Now, I can't get the gradient editor to work, but I did get it and the foreground color picker to help me select numbers. There are two numbered scales, such that the maximum is 100. One is blackness, V, and it controls how dark the color is. The other is the saturation; it controls how intense my color is. It goes from 0 to 100. Somehow at one point I got the opacity slider to display; not sure how I managed it, but it controlled the opacity number and nothing else. Now, in the gradient editor, I get the position at wherever my mouse is at, the rgb color, HSV, and luminance and opacity. HSV is 0.0 some number between 1 and 100 100.0 Luminance is some number between 0 and 100. It seems that everything changes together, except opacity and blackness, which change separately. If I carefully keep the black control all the way down and change the saturation, both the luminance and the middle number in HSV change. I don't see anything that goes from 0 to 1.000 that affects luminosity, saturation, or anything that controls how light or intense the color is. So say I want RGB color 1.0, .307, .307, with the middle HSV number 69.4, and luminance 45.1; and in the foreground color picker this is Hue 0, saturation 85, V=100 (0 blackness), RGB = 255 38 38, and the HTML notation is ff2626.What number do I want to put after the RGB colors where 1.000 is now? Feel free to point me to anything that explains it that is written in English and won't take more than fifteen minutes for someone who got this far to figure out, and also if there is a chart or, better, tool somewhere that will just tell me what numbers to use for the colors and saturation I want. If I wanted to change the opacity, would that be changed IN the gradient, or would it be changed with how one applies the gradient? Thanks! Thanks, darxus. I have a suggestion, though. People really want to celebrate events this week, which maybe not by coincidence coincides with Gay Pride Week, and not in a couple of years when the new edition of GIMP comes out. You can make any GIMP add-on and circulate it on line, and see if it catches on. Send me your script privately, and tell me how to use it, and I'll try it out myself. I feel like celebrating. It's been one of those our entire culture shifts completely in one week weeks. By the way, Darxus, I know one doesn't normally do this, but I'm so sure you did NOT mean to discuss this only with me, especially as you specifically addressed yourself to someone else, that I'm posting it back to the list. I'm not the only one who thinks gradients grade, and I'm not who you wanted to tell they can use gradients to make their gay flag. This list is set up so you have to reply all to reply to the list, and that is so unusual I fail to do it half of the time. Re: [Gimp-user] [Gimp-docs] Accessibility documentation request
This has piqued my curiosity. I live in Austin and have worked at TCEQ; they are a strange breed; strange even for Texas bureacrats. I'm wondering if this one could really have come from TCEQ, and if so what Ms. Hunter could be thinking. I think I'll just call her up tomorrow and ask her. My brother in law has worked for IBM helping government agencies develop Linux solutions, and if there is any issue with government agencies thinking they're banned from using free software, maybe he can shed light... Now, Austin IS the original land of bureacracy... New York State doesn't even hold a candle to it... and you know that University of Texas at Austin debate over the confederate statues on campus, which campus officials have handled for decades through protracted bureacratic procedure? Well, guess what... EVERYTHING is handled like that here.Sometimes it's deliberate, sometimes not. So Ms. Hunter understands, open source software is not for purchase, and one doesn't have to acquire a license to use it. Like, would get used to it be appropriate? I wonder if she has this list confused with the developers of GIMP. Some Linux distributions have some optional or else easily overlooked procedure where you agree to keep the software open source. GIMP's developers would know if they have such a procedure. I'd be astounded if Texas actually has a law against state agencies using open source or free software... I really don't think so, LOL But people are so strange here, it's no surprise some government officials may think such a law exists! The GIMP web site should tell how to contact those developers. http://www.gimp.org/ But from looking on this site, it comes across that like most things Linux/ open source, GIMP is strictly a community effort. You'd have better luck getting an official response from the owners of Wikipedia... they don't exist. There is no contact information for GIMP's developers, because GIMP's developers are all of us. GIMP's documentation, including it's GNU Free Documentation License are here: http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/ This is an open mailing list where GIMP users share information on how to use the software... this list certainly won't be providing TCEQ with its accessibility information! Certainly not by *June 15, 2015*. Which leads me to wonder exactly what I will find out when I call Ms. Hunter tomorrow, because June 15 was like, eight days ago. Is this a spoof? Maybe by someone who has as little use for TCEQ as I do? I'm pretty sure GIMP's developers made not attempt to sell GIMP to TCEQ nor even got in touch with them unless TCEQ had reached out to them... and installing the software is a matter of downloading it! Now, if TCEQ means to sue all open source developers to require them to sell and license their software a whole lot of people will be seeing them in court... right after I suspect a whole lot of people take thick old white paint (with black for the eyes) to those confederate statues on the UT Austin campus. I worked for a large company that runs a big call center in Austin that contracts with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to handle certain welfare services. We used CCleaner to remove cookies and empty browser caches and free up our software. CCleaner is free... unless one chooses to use the pro version, but we weren't using that.. .It was just installed on our computers. Anyone can install and use ccleaner. You don't need a license and you don't have to pay for it. I don't need a license, and the State of Texas doesn't need a license. I am wondering what Ms. Hunter specifically means by accessibility documentationusually accessibility has to do with aids the software might have that would be helpful to people with disabilities. I don't even see how it would apply to GIMP. GIMP is graphics software. As far as I know you need to be able to see well enough to use it and nothing internal to GIMP would help you if you can't... How GIMP might be used with specific adaptive equipment, for example, for people who have trouble using their hands, would be a specific set of questions for the developers. Accessibility is often a very user-specific issue that it's hard to plan in advance for in any case. Now, Ubuntu, an open source Linux operating system, comes with accessibility features I've not even seen in English, or not as usable; the computer will actually read anything at all to you out loud, and that sort of thing! And that's just included with Ubuntu. I'm going to get back to you all with what I find out when I talk with Ms. Hunter. Ross, why would I be using a tablet. I'm using a mouse! On a computer! I've not modified anything. GIMP is acting exactly the same way in Ubuntu and Windows 7, on different computers. It isn't something I've done. It isn't some erratic way something is acting. That's happening because the program is not getting a discrete mouse-up signal. Are you using the mouse or a stylus-tablet? Most of the stylus-tablet combinations I've used have a click-lock function. The most usual cause for this problem is that something is calling that function, usually a setting in the tablet software or button layout. For example, if you have a button near the tip of the stylus set to click-lock, and you inadvertently press it slightly, that could do it. The same sort of thing can happen with a mouse, or a trackpad. One of the sneakiest ways is when you have a trackpad, but are using the mouse or stylus, and unconsciously touch the trackpad—or even a key on the keyboard. Is caps lock set? If you've modified the keyboard commands, that could also cause a signal conflict. First thing to do is quit, reboot, and relaunch GIMP. Normal system changes sometimes cause temporary erratic behavior in some apps, and graphics programs are particularly vulnerable, even the most robust. Make sure you have the latest compatible device driver for your OS. If the problem still occurs, does it occur with all input devices, or only with one? In that case, check that device's settings. If the problem doesn't seem to be there, check the system settings to make sure it is recognizing the device properly. Finally, if possible, check the hardware by using another similar device. The first place you click, you will see a circle that is momentarily filled with yellow. Continue clicking or dragging, then close the selection shape by moving the cursor over the starting point. When you are at the correct point, that original click point, with the yellow filled circle, will reappear. Click in it to close the shape.
