[Gimp-user] Want to have clone tool fade

2017-04-06 Thread Judy Wilson
I have been using the GIMP for years and I love it, though I don't do
many of the fancy things. I have tried to figure out how to make a
"fade" with the clone tool (and paint tool). I found this site
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-dynamics.html and I see all kinds of
fancy "dynamics" and maybe what I want has something to do with
"opacity" but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help? I'm getting old.
I'll be 74 next month! :-D I've always gotten great help from this list.
I live in Belize! Judy Wilson

Re: [Gimp-user] changing the brush sizes

using the bracket keys or the radius slider. I'm not using a mouse and I don't
want to try using the track pad's scroll function to change the size of the
brush because I use it to scroll. Any suggestions?

Hi Jim,

from he textual description of a youtube video I found out while
having your same problem:

"GIMP has a very good at working with realistic paint brushes, but the
default installation lacks a very useful shortcut. If you have worked
with the Paint Brush or Pencil tool, you may have noticed that
changing the size of the brush isn't easy. You have to fiddle around
with the Size/Scale slider in the tool options on the left. This is a
lot of guess work, because it doesn't show a preview size when you are
dragging the slider. Have no fear, there is an easier way. Configure
the mouse wheel to increase and decrease the brush size when you
scroll up or down.

-Click "Edit"?"Preferences"
-Under the "Input Devices" section, click "Input Controllers"
-In the "Active Controllers" column, double-click "Main Mouse Wheel"
-A new window to configure the controller will pop up. Make sure the
second check box, "Enable this Controller" is checked, or else this
won't work
-Find the "Scroll Up" event, (it should be at the top). Double-click
it or click "Edit" at the bottom.
-Click on the "Tools" section and type "increase" in the search field
-Scroll down and click on the action "Increase Brush Size". The name
is "tools-paint-brush-size-increaseot;. (In some versions of GIMP
it was "Increase Brush Scale")
-Close the window, then edit the "Scroll Down" event
-This time type "Decrease" in the search bar and locate the "Decrease
Brush Size" action. (Name is "tools-paint-brush-size-decreaseot;)
-Close the action window, input controller window and click OK in the
"Preferences" window

Now you can simply scroll the mouse wheel to vary the brush size."

Hope it helps,
To me, it works perfectly! ;)

Cheers,

When I have a tool open like the paint brush, clone, or something
similar, if my cursor is in the image, I simple tap the [ to make it
smaller or the ] to make it larger. I do this all the time and I love
it. I may try to above, might be even easier.

Colors and size of the tools are controlled by the theme selected. You
can change the theme in Edit->Preferences->Theme.

If there isn't any theme but the default one, you have to install
additional themes. How to do that depends on the operating system of
your computer. Which one do you use?

Kind regards

Thanks, got what I need. Just changed something in Colors in my System
Settings. Now I am happy! And thanks Jan, my husband is named Jan!

Re: [Gimp-user] changing the brush sizes

2016-01-25 Thread Judy Wilson
If you double click on the brush, you'll also get a dialog box with some
setting for that tool. The easiest thing I've found lately about
changing brush size is to simply put the cursor on the canvas to see
what size it is, then I just hit the left bracket [ key to make it
smaller and the right bracket ] key to make it larger, and I can see the
size as it changes. It will remain that size if I change tools, like to
the clone tool. Don't know anything about the drop downs, sorry.

Re: [Gimp-user] How do I get the lasso tool to stop adding lines?

2015-06-28 Thread Judy Wilson
I'm no Gimp guru, but I have had this problem, with the line still
staying. I've just learned to hit the Move tool, and the line goes away.

Solution seems to be to take care of remembering which is the first point,

No need to remember anything. Hit Enter and the tool will close
the selection, from the last point you made back to the first point.

There's a visual difference too: as your mouse gets close to a
point, if it's not the first point, the line from your last point
disappears. That's because the behavior is different: if you click
on the last point, the tool closes the selection, but if you click
and drag on any other point, you can move it. But you don't have to
remember or be aware of any of that if you just hit Enter whenever
you want to close the selection.

Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP -2.8.10 Brushes

2014-03-13 Thread Judy Wilson
I have been using the GIMP for about 10 years now, don't really
understand most of the technical stuff that goes on with this list, but
it has been very helpful (the list) to me when I have had specific
questions I could not find the answers to on the web. I use the GIMP for
all my photo editing, pretty basic stuff, but I'm good with the basic stuff.

With the new way the brush sizes work, I was at first frustrated, then I
discovered I can just select the kind of brush I want, then simply use
the open and close brackets , [ and ], to resize it larger or smaller
to my satisfaction. This works for me, just saying.

scl has already touched upon it somewhat, but one of the large design

changes in recent GIMPs is that brush size is now a tool setting instead
of a brush setting - so instead of having a set of 3/5/7/9/11/etc. sized
brushes (being otherwise identical in settings) you have one brush (with a
specific shape/hardness/angle/etc) and you set the size directly using the
slider in the tool's options. You can still create various sized brushes
(as previous versions did) but then any time you change a brush you'll
need to verify the brush size prior to using it (the slider has a reset
button next to it for this purpose).

Thanks Richard; But is there a way, in this edition of GIMP, to set the
size of a particular brush and then save it so that it reproduces the same
size that was set and saved, next time that i start GIMP?

[Gimp-user] Question about bump map location

2013-09-02 Thread Judy Wilson
First, let me say how much I have appreciated the help I've gotten
throughout the years from this list! I'm a 70 year old woman living in
Belize, my husband and I do websites (he's the programmer), I love the
graphic aspect, though he's good at that, too. We have been open-source
users and supporters for over 10 years, sponsored Software Freedom Day
in Belize in 2006 and 2007. We use Ubuntu, GIMP, and Inkscape
applications, he uses all kinds of programming languages, of course.
Kudos to everyone contributing to this list and the open source movement.

My question: I would like to put a watermark of my logo on images, and
I can do so with the Map, Bump Map Filter. However, the location of the
bump map is a problem. At 0 on the X and Y Offset sliders, it goes into
the upper left hand corner. OK. The problem is the sliders only move to
-1000, and my images are often larger than that, and I want to put the
bump map into the lower right hand corner, and the sliders will not
allow that. Typing in the numbers doesn't work, and moving the bump map
in the preview with the middle mouse button doesn't work. Of course if I
make the images smaller I can get it into the right hand lower corner,
but I want to use the larger image. Any solution for this, or do I have
to just live with this ... defect(?) for now. Thank you!
