Re: [Gimp-user] Stylus Button Actions Not Working

| Preface: Using a windows 10 machine.
|
| I got a VEIKK A30 drawing tablet for Christmas and instantly got GIMP to
| try and draw stuff. I set up the tablet through the input devices and it
| seems to work fine. I also downloaded the drivers for the tablet in
| order to change what the buttons on the stylus do.

Part of the issue here, maybe, is that GIMP isn't really a drawing/painting
program. It's more an image-editing program. Think Photoshop, not Corel
Draw. There are some drawing aspects to GIMP, but they're more in service
of the original purpose of the program.

| I tried changing the buttons using the driver software, but they still
| do the same thing in GIMP. The bottom button, closest to the nib, opens
| up the same window as when I right click with a mouse. The top button,
| farthest from the nib, allows me to move the page around and zoom in/out
| sometimes, I'm not really sure how the program determines which it does.
| I've tried changing both button actions and neither seem to change. I've
| checked online and the stylus does input the correct key combinations on
| online key checkers.

Do you have an actual drawing or painting program? I know Microsoft used to
bundle some kind of paint program (I used OS/2 before switching to Linux
22 years ago, so I'm not up to date on Win stuff). Anyway, first
diagnostic would be to see if your changes work in other programs. If they
don't, than it's not a GIMP-specific problem.

That would, seems to me, be something you'd want to try right off the bat.

| On Linux™ systems you can also do this by opening the image in the

The heritage of the PDF has something to do with it also. A lot of PDFs are
basically themselves a single image per page, in which case you open it in

[Gimp-user] question re. color handling

2019-08-29 Thread dep
greetings, everyone . . .

since the release of gimp 2.10, i've dealt with an issue whenever i open a
file -- it asks me whether i wish to preserve the existing srgb or to
convert to gimp's -- even when the image was previously saved in gimp's
profile. if in fact i allow it to convert, the result is about a whole
stop darker when it is saved, and darker still in thumbnails (gthumb,
geeqie). this is a little bit alarming, and i'm not sure what is best to
do. surely it serves some function or else it wouldn't be part of the
program, but making pictures unusably dark probably isn't what they had in
mind.

so would someone be so good as to talk me through the rationale here such
that i might intelligently deal with it?

[Gimp-user] from the shadows . . .

2019-06-29 Thread dep
greetings, everybody.

one of the things i've long hoped for, that photoshop has had and gimp
hadn't but now does in 2.10.x, is the highlight/shadow controls.

but i'm a bit puzzled by one aspect, and i'm hoping someone here can help
me sort what i'm getting wrong.

when i use the shadow control to bring detail out of the muck, past a
certain point it also adds blotchiness to areas such as the sky. should i
try to generally select the areas i want to de-shadow, or is there some
other control or setting that will help with this? the three sliders at
the bottom of the control, white point, radius, and compress, are not
particularly intuitive to me, but i'm guessing some relief might be found
there.

i suppose i could experiment, but i thought if the answer is known and
simple i needn't try to discover it.

thanks in advance.
