Caveat: the fundamental principle of Chromebooks is that they are built
to run ChromeOS, and in ChromeOS a lot of the heavy-processing is
off-loaded to Google servers. This allows to make Chromebooks with small
CPUs and RAM to keep their price low.  An application like Gimp can
require a lot of CPU and RAM to process some images, so you may find
your Chromebook to be struggling when you process decent-sized images.

Chrome OS has had the ability to run linux apps for quite a while. So,
first enable linux apps on your Chromebook. This should help:

Then once you've done that, it "should" be as simple as "sudo apt-get
install gimp".

Hope this helps. If not, please let me know.

Hi Matthew. In the old days Chrome OS was its own platform,
but from what i see now they have the option to turn on Linux in settings.
If you dont have the option to turn on Linux you wont be able to do it.
There are actually many tutorials out there to replace the Chrome OS with
Linux,
that's a lot more complicated. I hope you have the Linux option, because
then you could install a lot more
Linux apps. The way I learned about Unix or Linux then, was when Macs
changed over to Unix based,
and then they had the command mode and I went on from there.
Let us know if it works.

As I understand it, the Graphic User Interface for Linux is X Windows. That
would need to be present.
In Mac OS, Linux compatibility is obtained via Apples version of X Windows;
X11. There may be a
similar accommodation for Chrome OS. Perhaps you can get some guidance with
this issue via
Google Chrome OS user support and/or Samsung user support.

Hello Matthew,

Linux is more than just a program, it's the base (called "kernel") of a
whole operating system (GNU/Linux, there are many flavors of it).

If your plan is to continue using Chrome OS, I would suggest exploring
options other than GIMP.

If you feel adventurous, you can try to switch to Linux and use GIMP there.
Your life will never be the same again though :)

[Gimp-user] Google Chrome OS

2021-05-10 Thread matthew kane via gimp-user-list
Hello,

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Chromebook. I tried to download GIMP
but it did not work. I know there is something called Linux that is
available to download on the chromebook, I just don't know anything about
it and didn't really care, until now. If I get this Linux program on my
chromebook will I be able to download GIMP?

Thanks
