no, there's no reason except if i'm moving to linux, i'd rather use something with a nice web interface and list mgmt. features like mailman or ezmlm... :-) but of course, there's the added complexity of making qmail run... Just put all your users on the Linux box, and switch your MX record to the linux box. Everything else is done. (Except for moving existing spool files on the Mac to the Linux box). "Joshua S. Re: new mx record question
Hi, >The only people I want using my smtp server are people logged into their >shell account, or people who HAVE shell accounts using a mail client from >a remote network... This is not gonna work. What you can do with smtp is to control the access from ip numbers. Of course you have to have relaying denied for everybody (this is common in the distributions lately), and let sendmail know where to look for the host list that are permitted to use it as a relay: FR-o /etc/mail/sendmail.cR And that file is a list of the names of the relay boxes. This is usually the job of the company where they get the dialup from, since they have full control over their ip numbers. Who/when/from where/etc., in case of spam letters. So how is it going now? Still not perfect? Ferenc ** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following text in the *body* (*not* the subject line) of the letter: unsubscribe gnhlug **
Re: new mx record question
I don't think so! (If that's the case, then your system won't be able to receive mail from anywhere on the network!) That's the way SMTP works - its a mail receiving protocol - and its defined to work (RFC 911 I think) such that the sender doesn't have to log in! However, with the /etc/mail/access file, you can restrict the hosts that connect to it - and using the AUTH protocol (aka identd) you can sorta authenticate the sender (however, there are some well-known ways to spoof this, so its not considered "secure"). Re: new mx record question
In the RedHat distribution, it comes pretty much "locked down" (doesn't permit relaying unless you want it to). Its all controlled by the /etc/mail/access file (which is described in /usr/doc/sendmail/README.cf). "Joshua S. You *HAVE* to configure your mail host (on the Mac) to do that. There is *NO* way to have the DNS sort it out for you. This isn't a Mac list, so I doubt anyone here knows anything about your mail server on the Mac. Consult the documentation. :-) Alternatively, move your mail services over to the Linux machine. One option you have is TCP wrappers (does sendmail have support for this? I know exim does). Also, make sure you turn off relaying. If using exim I can help with this, with sendmail - I dunno. 8) Another security suggestion for the group in general. The easiest solution? Move all your mail services OFF the Mac and onto the Linux box. Set the Linux box to be the Mail server for the domain (by changing the MX record). Other solutions are more involved. "Joshua S.
