gnome-documents strings changes
Hi all, Andre pointed out to me on IRC the recent string changes in gnome-documents might be considered a string freeze break. The strings didn't actually change, but disambiguation contexts have been added as requested here [1] [2]. Since gnome-documents hasn't yet been branched for gnome-3-8, I could branch it from a commit previous to the introduction of these comments if they constitute a break, even if that kinda defeats the original purpose of the fix... Hey, just a little update on this. Since I didn't get approval from i18n, I went ahead and released nautilus 3.7.92 without the string changes for now. As there are no other code changes involved, I think it's fine to commit that before 3.8.0, should the change be approved and the n-s-t part merged/released as well in time. State of nautilus-sendto for 3.8
Hi all, nautilus-sendto has been in a quite broken state for some time now, with many of the plugins not working correctly if at all. In the long term, I think we should have the concept of a generic DBus "sharing service" API applications can use, but a more short-term solution is to just strip down nautilus-sendto so that its arguably most important feature (sending files by email) is nicely integrated and works correctly (tracked in bug [1]). This was on our roadmap for 3.6, but it was too late in the cycle back then to make this change. Six months later we're essentially at the same point, and I think it makes sense now to push for this change to be included in the release. Patches are on the bug report, feedback and comments appreciated. eog string freeze break request
Hi all, This bug [1] has a patch to make the string eog uses for setting an image as wallpaper consistent with the terminology currently used in nautilus. Nautilus UI/String freeze break request
Hi all, I apologize for the many freeze break requests for Nautilus this cycle, but I have one last request to commit an UI/string change. Currently we have two mimetype columns for List view: one (enabled by default) displaying its description as a (typically long) string, and another one displaying the "raw" mimetype string. Bug 683722 [1] proposes to change the default column to use a more generic and compact string describing the mimetype; for instance, all the images would be displayed as "Image". The goals are to make it possible to group objects of the same family when sorting, and to reduce the horizontal space such a column takes in the default list view layout. The raw mimetype string would still be available unchanged as a view option for more advanced filtering. The patch is available on the bug and introduces a bunch of new (short) strings. I think this would add a good extra polish for Nautilus 3.6. Has > anybody looked at what other modules use nautilus-sendto to > share stuff? [CC-ing Bastien] I'm sorry, I should have probably explained this a little better. Nobody is trying to gut nautilus-sendto, the goal is to have something working nicely for the use case of sending a file to somebody. As far as I can see, the Email option is really the only interesting one working correctly for nautilus-sendto at the moment, and that's where the patch came from. Note that nautilus-sendto has two parts: the module itself and a Nautilus extension that adds the item to the context menus. Only the extension lives in the nautilus source tree right now; I cannot really answer the question about whether it's used by other modules, probably Bastien would know. Of course, the nautilus change doesn't make any sense without the corresponding change that removes the dialog in nautilus-sendto, so probably Bastien should send an UI freeze request for that first? I should also note that this is not a high priority bug for me, and it's also completely fine if we decide it's better to punt such a change to the next cycle. I'd rather keep this as simple as possible, but I am willing to do something like this if the translators think it's too much work to translate this again in Documents. Two string changes for Nautilus
Hi again, I would like to ask a string freeze break request for two strings in Nautilus: - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680983 - this is about changing the "Send To..." string of the nautilus-sendto extension to "Email...". nautilus-sendto used to offer a set of options other than email, which are currently not really working correctly. In the bug there's a patch to change the extension to open the email client directly instead, and this should be mirrored in the string displayed in the UI. - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683752 - when an user tries to open a file for which there are no applications available, we show a message saying "There is no application installed for %s files". The patch adds quotes around the %s, to ensure the file type stands out from the rest of the string. This currently works correctly in list view, but a bug [1] breaks this model for icon view. I attached a patch to that bug, which adds a new menu item in the view menu and two new strings, and would like to commit it for 3.6, so I'm requesting an UI/string freeze break. I don't think master.gnome.org is a good example here, since the amount of knowledge you need in order to obtain an account on that machine is vastly greater than knowing how to type a ssh:// URL. > At any rate, people probably aren't going to click Help when > they have a URL and know what to do. Our job is to provide > the information for the people who need it. I agree, but I also think optimizing the UI for the case where we can be useful with both general online documentation (of the kind "use ftp://blah.foo as URL to connect to this hosting service/NAS") and previous knowledge of the user of how this is implemented in other equivalent interfaces is a worthwhile goal in this regard. For people that don't know how to deal with an URL, and are given just an address and a generic description of the protocol, probably having a mapping table between popular variations of names for a given protocol and the URI scheme to use in the dialog would be nice. To be honest, I don't think such a detailed level of information about what URIs are is required; I think what matters most is how you did get the URL you want to connect to in the first place: - if you configured a service like Samba yourself, you probably know already what is an URL, a port etc, and you have no problem typing it all (it's actually faster and less error-prone than finding the right service type and filling in all the fields) - if you got it from somewhere else (for example the documentation of your NAS, like in [1]), in the old dialog you would have to guess how to decompose the URL into the various controls in the dialog Note that even in these cases, you would have still needed to type the URI manually in the old dialog (and also a number of other details upfront). Finally, if you want to discover services in your network, we want to promote the use of the browsing features (that's the reason for the button in the new dialog layout). >> - we have now a "Browse" button in the dialog directly > > What does the Browse button do? Nautilus UI freeze break request
Hi, We have a patchset in Nautilus that redesigns the "Connect to Server" dialog. Notable changes are: - the dialog now remembers and keeps track of the servers you connected to in the past (allowing you to remove or clear the list on context menu) - instead of having the dialog construct the URI manually from the various comboboxes/controls, we now use an entry box to type the URI directly. This is more consistent with what other OS use for the same feature - we have now a "Browse" button in the dialog directly There's a more detailed analysis and screenshots in the bug report [1]. Since in the future we don't want to promote the use of this dialog from out of nautilus, the separate binary for it has been moved to $(libexec), with the idea to remove it completely next cycle. There's an analysis on the impact of this in the bug report, but the short version is that Baobab will probably need a patch to reflect this change (gnome-panel and gnome-shell are also affected, but the former will gracefully handle the binary missing, and we want to remove the Connect to Server launcher from the shell entirely [2]). I think this would be a nice polishing to have for 3.6, and with this mail I request an UI freeze break for the feature. Thanks! Documents Freeze break request
Hi, in the last week I worked on a series of improvements for GNOME Documents; most these changes were initially planned to be done during the 3.4 cycle but unfortunately I missed the freeze deadline. Changes include - the use of checkbuttons instead of the classic treeview-like selection background for selection mode - changing the title of the toolbar according to the current view - support for drag and drop of items out of the application - show document date information in list view - support for printing documents I put some screenshots of the new features here [1]. The changes unfortunately include quite some new strings and touch some important bits of the UI, but I think they're worth it and I would like to merge them for next Monday's beta, so I am here requesting a freeze break for these changes. Code can be found at [2]. ngettext needed in these strings?
Hi GNOME i18n team, This Nautilus bug [1] has a patch attached that changes some file operations progress strings from this format: Moving/Copying/... 1 file (in "foo") to "bar" Moving/Copying/... XX files (in "foo") to "bar" (where the number represents the files left in the operation) to this format: Moving/Copying/... file X of XX (in "foo") to "bar" (where the first number is the current file being processed and the second one is the total number of files processed in the operation). The original strings use ngettext() on the number of files left; a comment in the bug report suggested ngettext() should be used also with the new strings, though it's not clear to me on which parameter the singular/plural condition would apply (as the subject of the string is always "File X", which is singular). Comments appreciated, either as a reply to this mail or directly in the bug report. Please CC me directly if you reply to this mail, as I am not subscribed to receive gnome-i18n mails. gnome-utils module split completed
Hi, as discussed in [1], I went ahead and completed the module split. - the six modules have been split in separate git repos, with their version bumped to 3.3.0 - new bugzilla products have been created for each of the modules, and module maintainers have been set as administrators for the relevant products - all gnome-utils bugs have been all moved to the new bugzilla products I made sure every submodule passes distcheck before pushing; I hope everything is fine and I didn't miss anything...in case I did or for any other additional information, feel free to contact me. GNOME Documents in 3.2
Hi, as I announced on my blog [1], I released a preview of gnome-documents yesterday. It will be included in GNOME 3.2, probably as a preview release, and it looks like GNOME Shell already has a default launcher for it on the dash. As yesterday's was the first release of the application, and we're approaching (or we're already past) all sorts of freezes in the development cycle (string freeze is in ~1 week), there are a few things I would like to point out: - I cannot guarantee there won't be any string additions after string freeze, but I'll try to keep them low (I don't really expect this to be a problem, as there are basically no translations now) - there are no big UI changes planned much between now and 3.2, but there might be some minor tweaks needed here and there. Thanks, I would appreciate your input on how to make this work best to have the best experience in 3.2. String change in nautilus
Hi, I changed a string in Nautilus to refer to version 3.0; it was referencing version 2.32 before. String freeze break request for Empathy
Hi GNOME translators, I hereby request a string freeze break for Empathy, for the following strings, which were introduced some time ago in the gnome-2-28 branch in order to look nicer on the Moblin platform. "Do you want to remove %s from your computer?" "L_og in" "This will not remove your account on the server." "Respond" "_Next" Note that these strings are turned off in regular builds, and are only used when Empathy is built on the Moblin platform. Thus, translators should feel free to ignore them, or give them a low priority. This is explained with comments before the strings. In another thread, I already got an (informal) first approval from Gabor Kelemen. Cheers, and sorry for the confusion this might have created. Re: String additions to 'empathy.gnome-2-28'
Hi Andre and GNOME translators, On Fri, 2009-10-02 at 20:43 +0200, Andre Klapper wrote: > Hi Guillaume & Cosimo, > > please revert the following string changes in the gnome-2-28 branch as > it is string-frozen, or send a formal string freeze break request: > "Translators: this is used only when built on a moblin platform" > comments are unhelpful. Why should I care about that? It means that these strings do not exist in regular Empathy builds, and they're turned on only when Empathy is built on a Moblin platform (they're all guarded with #ifdef clauses); so translators are free to ignore them. Sorry if this wasn't clear from the comments. Cheers, Cosimo ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n
