About PO generation for GIMP repository

2022-08-22 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi all!

We recently had our main dev branch (`master`) ported from intltool to
gettext. Of course, we had various bugs which we fixed, but we realized one
of them after we tagged GIMP 2.99.12 release.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/commit/7375116d46faede26eea38ac2b7ee29513f415e6

TLDR; in the po-windows-installer/ folder, we had a bunch of
"Continue" (and other texts) in the source XML which should have been
"" in the po files (otherwise they are re-exported back as
"amp;Continue".

I fixed this issue, but since we also wanted a nice installer for GIMP
2.99.12, I also did a quick pass through the .po files in order to fix this
issue:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/commit/941a53dfbcf8a9d496eb5792539d7dd70d661d9c

That was basic fixing: gettext calls and some regular expressions. No
semantic update on my side. I hope you all won't mind. 

I also did some manual change review to make sure I didn't break anything.
I think I didn't. Feel free to double-check and really sorry if I did!

Now I haven't fixed the autotools script which seems to still grab ""
as-is from the XML and I didn't pursue the issue for too long.

So my question is: what does Damned Lies use for generating the `.po` files
now? Does it use the meson build? Because I do hope the Damned Lies
platform won't reintroduce the "".

For the record, we are starting to shift and since this release (GIMP
2.99.12), we are going to encourage packagers to build with meson.
If all goes well, we might be able to drop autotools for GIMP 3.0 and not
have to do all build rules twice.

Thanks!

I implemented this and it's now in gimp-help (both gimp-help-2-10 and
master branches). When you'll update the po files, they should now have the
comments on the 2 strings with % numbers.

I'll do the same on the GIMP repository soon too.

Awesome. By the way, I was saying in my email that it was in `
gimp-help-2-10` only. But since then I backported the change to `master`

Sure.

* In " No suitable GIMP installations were found. %1 can only be installed
when GIMP %2 is already present.", %1 is replaced by the other localizable
string "GIMP Help", and %2 is the minimum version (which will be
major.minor, i.e. "2.10" for instance).

* In "Select all installs for which you want to install %1", %1 is replaced
by the localized version of "GIMP Help".

if it’s technically possible.
>

I just tested. We extract the string with `intltool-extract` with type
`gettext/ini`. Unfortunately the file is not actually an ini file (just
similar), in particular comments start with `;` whereas intltool looks for
comments starting with `#`.

We can still do something by adding a processing step where I'd just remove
`#` line from the InnoSetup lang file before feeding it to InnoSetup (and
using the un-processed file for intltool tricking it into seeing an ini
file). I'll have a look.

Thanks!

New po files in gimp-help repository (and release soonish)

2022-03-20 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi translators!

We added our scripts to create a Windows installer for the manual of GIMP
(project "gimp-help") directly in the repository. We also now have scripts
to extract the installer strings into po files before merging them back.
Therefore the strings for the installer are now localizable from the
`po-windows-installer/` directory (for now only in the `gimp-help-2-10`
branch, we'll port to `master` branch later):
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp-help/-/tree/gimp-help-2-10/po-windows-installer

So first a question: what is the process to add these po files to the
Damned Lies system so that it's translatable by GNOME translation teams?

Second, a small pre-announcement that we are planning to make a release of
the manual (`gimp-help-2-10` branch) soonish. It had been more or less
dormant these years but activity really restarted lately (thanks to Jacob,
new co-maintainer of gimp-help) and we want to make at least one more
release of the 2.10 manual; it might not be a perfect release, but better
than never. By the way, we also have a new testing website where changes on
the `gimp-2-10` branch are reflected: http://testing.docs.gimp.org/ (if not
mistaken, it is a daily re-build at midnight UTC)

Once we will have made this release, we will likely move on to work in
priority on the GIMP 3.0 documentation.

In any case, we will make a proper announcement a few weeks before, with a
string freeze of the docs, but I guess it's a good idea to tell you about
it a bit earlier.
Thanks all!

Releasing GIMP 2.10.30 (Sunday maybe or in the coming week) and maybe 2.99.10 too

2021-12-17 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi translators!

We are releasing GEGL 0.4.34 and GIMP 2.10.30 a bit unexpectedly in the
coming days (possibly on Sunday at the fastest). This is for security
reasons.

This is for the stable branch, hence the `gimp-2-10` branch.

We might also release a dev version (GIMP 2.99.10, so the `master` branch)
before the end of the year. Actually we were initially planning to do it
for Christmas (and not release a stable version at all this month). But
with the sudden release of 2.10.30, it is now unsure if we will follow
through with the 2.99.10 release plan so soon after. In any case, it's not
as much a priority (yet we welcome updates there too if you have any time).
We'll see.

Thanks to everyone, and have a very nice end of year, happy holidays and
all that! 

Releasing GIMP 2.99.8 soon

2021-10-10 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hello translation teams!

We are releasing GIMP 2.99.8 in a few days. I would say it will happen
between Wednesday 13 and Sunday 17, though it depends on volunteer time for
the last fixups.

This is a development release, i.e. any text change is in the `master`
branch.

Thanks everyone for the hard work, as always! 

I had a small message of people expecting 2.10.28 to be already out.

It is still expected for us to release a 2.10.28 because of the small
mess-up for 2.10.26. Unfortunately timing is bad because I am out of home
for a few days. I was hoping to release a few days ago, and still hoping to
do it today or tomorrow, but I'd be doing it in the train or from friend's
places and don't want to double mess-up. This is why it's hard to keep the
schedule. Bad timing for it to happen this week.

Anyway 2.10.28 is coming, this is for sure!

For the record, we found a small yet annoying build bug in a recent change,
so we are going to directly ship GIMP 2.10.28 (2.10.26 was released as
source yesterday, but we haven't announced it yet, hence will skip it and
will only announce 2.10.28).

Strings are unchanged, except that I added an appdata metadata in the
desktop file for the 2.10.28 release (so one more string). The source
release will likely happen on the evening (CET) of Tuesday 7.

Thanks and sorry for the mishap!

How to localize for ZH_TW?

2021-06-29 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hello,

Today we got a new contribution for ZH_TW at GIMP's:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/457

Normally I would redirect people to the GNOME team's coordinator, but I
realize ZH_TW has none: https://l10n.gnome.org/teams/zh_tw/

Is the ZH_TW locale maintained by one of the coordinators of another
Chinese team? Or is there just a lack of people, and in this case, maybe
another Chinese coordinator could be temporary coordinator for a while
(then we'll see how things evolve)?

Thanks all!

Soon branching gimp-help module into origin/gimp-help-2-10

2021-05-22 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hello translators!

Just a heads-up. Unless something comes up (we also sent an email to
documenters and devs about the topic to make sure it's alright), we plan to
branch the gimp-help module into `origin/gimp-help-2-10` within 2 weeks (so
likely around the June 5/6 weekend):
https://l10n.gnome.org/module/gimp-help/

Documentation and translation for GIMP 2.10 will continue inside this new
branch. The `master` branch will move on to be about future GIMP 3.0 from
this point onward.

As I am guessing it will require some action on Damned Lies website to
handle both the gimp-help-2-10 and master branches, this email is a
notification.

Please do not hesitate to tell me if our process to handle this is wrong or
anything. 
Thanks!

Release of GIMP 2.99.6 (dev version) incoming

2021-04-19 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi translation teams!

We are planning a development release of GIMP (i.e. branch `master`). Our
current plan is **Sunday 25th of April**. As usual, the date is not set in
stone, so it might happen a bit later too. At least that's the plan for now.

Thanks all!

Most likely you were not given push permission on this repository, which is
normal if this is your first contribution there.
Instead you must create a merge request at:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp-help/-/merge_requests

To do this, first "fork" the repository into your personal user space (it's
not a real fork, they use the same word to just mean you make a personal
public clone of the main repository), push to your public remote, then you
can do the merge request from this remote.

If some of the steps I (very briefly) described here are blurry, I'm sure
there are a few tutorials about contributing on Gitlab on the web.
Otherwise do not hesitate to come on IRC too (#gimp on irc.gimp.org).

In any case, tell us if there are any more problems and we will help.

Indeed didn't really think about this. That makes sense that people would
prefer to stick with Damned Lies.

Another question is: who will review those translations? You should

No I think you are right. I just stuck my nose where it should not have
been.
Actually even when I was writing my initial email, I was thinking it was a
bit stupid because if the translator was not responding to messages, even
if we did review by gitlab, review would have failed just as well (even
more in Gitlab which really sucks for quick review/fixes as you cannot
easily amend patches yourseles; often we regret good old patches reviewed
directly in the terminal so we actually regularly bypass the system).

Anyway that was just a little brainstorm wish because I was a bit sad to
waste translations this way. But actually I'm not sure there is any real
way out of the waste here as it all boils down to a contributor dropping
patches without proper follow up.

Translation updates through gitlab?

2020-04-01 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hello everyone!

Lately we have had some people uploading GIMP translations in the form of
merge requests on gitlab.

Notably we had someone who uploaded big po files updates for Korean, a year
ago:
For GIMP 2.10: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/51
For master: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/54

He did update a lot of translatable text. Unfortunately he was not
responsive on gitlab when we (as well as the Korean team coordinator) asked
him to send his po file through the team channel, even after we tried to
discuss with him in English or Korean. No idea why. He was capable enough
to translate hundreds of sentence from English to Korean, use git and make
gitlab MR, but he would not answer. In the end, we just had to close the MR
without taking the changes in, which was a bit heartbreaking (never nice to
waste contributor's hard work, especially as Korean is not updated that
often unfortunately!).

Recently, after a year, the same person reopened a new MR, and again
without answering or following procedure:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/213

Also recently someone also opened a MR for zh_TW and he doesn't answer much
either (though there was only one comment, so I made a new one and will
wait a bit before closing). Don't know what's up with translators making
MRs and not following up!
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/206

Anyway bottom line: I am wondering if there were a way to improve the
procedures for translation reviews made through MR? I mean, these
translators definitely could improve their contribution skills by actually
reading/answering comments and following up, but the base idea is still
right. The po files are on our repository so I understand why an outsider
might think making a MR makes sense. Of course if it ended up that the
translation was not right, if the translation needed changes before
merging, with a non-responsive person, the end result might be the same.
That's a problem anyway. But maybe it could have just worked out without
changes?
So yeah, I'd be happy to work more closely with translators team willing to
review translations in gitlab.

Am I missing something?
Thanks everyone!

Release of GIMP 2.10.10 planned "soon"

2019-03-07 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi translation teams!

GIMP 2.10.10 should be released very soon, though we don't have any clear
schedule. It may be in a few days, next week or a bit after, but not much
longer hopefully. We should get a bit more organized, but well here it is.
:-)

So if you feel like updating translations for your language, now may be the
time.
As usual, the work is meant to happen on branch `gimp-2-10` in priority.

Thank you for all the hard work!

Korean translation of GIMP

2019-02-18 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi Korean team (and everyone else)!

Someone did what looks like a huge job of translating GIMP in Korean, which
was indeed a bit falling behind these years, and proposed it as merge
requests:

For gimp-2-10: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/merge_requests/51
For master: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/merge_requests/54

We told this person on gitlab to not do merge requests, but instead get in
touch with the GNOME Korean team, giving links, etc. We never had any
answer (so I wonder if this person receives the notification or read the
opened request thread at all; we even tried a message in Korean!).

Still, has this person contacted anyone in the GNOME i18n community, and in
particular the Korean team?

If this goes on without contact, we are not sure what we should do in such
case. On one hand, we want Korean localization (currently around 50% if I
read the stats correctly), but we are not going to just merge these commits
like this obviously.
Do you have any advice to go forward?
Because right now these 2 merge requests are just sitting there, and we
have no idea what to do with them (we only leave them opened so that it
stays on sight).

Thanks all!

Re: Wrong context in 2 strings

2019-02-07 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Ok thanks everyone for the quick answers.

Seeing the unanimous (well up to now) answer, I just committed and pushed
the quick fix.
Commits 7a5e5be35e9b20e494767726fc58216c74125a08 on master and
66803bc2b3705830cf2f262fdd42e994aa990008 on gimp-2-10 branch.

As for future events, I guess I'll use my best judgement, and (if such
things ever happen again) if really I see that's the same thing (no actual
context/usage change, just an error in the msgctxt), I guess I would just
push.
But I'll ask again the question if I have any doubt or if the issue is
slightly different. :-)

Thanks again.

Wrong context in 2 strings

2019-02-07 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi!

In GIMP, we had a small bug in 2 strings: "Grow lighter areas of the image"
and "Grow darker areas of the image".

Basically in our code, we declared the strings with "drawable-action"
context (hence that was the msgctx registered in po files) but called the
translation with "filters-action" context so they were not translated.
I fixed the code to use "filters-action" everywhere (the other was wrong),
but the wrong context is now in various po/*.po files (43 files).

Do you mind if I just do a massive search-and-replace for these 2
context/strings to fix them? I mean, I actually already did it locally
(took 20 secs), and I think that it is simpler than having everyone just
edit manually for what was basically just a code bug. The actual context is
the same (these strings are filter descriptions, same place in the GUI as
what they were, nothing changed GUI-wise). So that looks harmless to me.

Yet I have been told we should not touch the po files ourselves, if
possible.

So 2 questions:
1/ Is it ok if I just push this change?

2/ In the future, what should be our process as developers when we just see
these kinds of code issues affecting the po files? Can we just push (making
our own decision that this is not a translation issue) or we must ask case
by case?

Thanks for the awesome work, all!

Jehan

I see. Though I still don't see the semantic. I thought ○ was the "on"
switch actually (it looks "open" to me, unlike ❙which looks "closed"). Does
it come from some specific field where these symbols are used like this?
Maybe in electronics (most likely place to have switches)?

Maybe it's a bit off-topic to ask this on this list but I don't know where
else this has been discussed.
Why this change? What does I/o means? (well I know the input/output
meaning, but if that's it, I don't see the generic relationship with a
switch, so I assume it's another meaning)

I personally find this a lot less understandable than a translated on/off.
Fortunately GtkSwitch also has color that shows if the switch is on or off,
otherwise this I/o would be totally puzzling to me, as for whether the
field is checked or not.

Jehan

P.S.: I am sure I am late and this has probably been discussed on some
report before since it looks like an already done decision. But I still
wanted to add my small comments. I hope you don't mind!

Release of GIMP 2.10.8 planned for end of week

2018-09-27 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi everyone!

We are hoping to get 2.10.8 out this weekend, if all goes well.
Therefore, now is the time for any last-minute translations, if needed. :-)

As usual, the work is meant to happen on branch `gimp-2-10` in priority.

Thank you everyone!

Oh ok. That's not a gimp.org website. I have no idea then. I assume this

That's actually why I was asking for a link. I don't think we should upload
any po files on the website. If we do, this is probably wrong unless this

the repo should be the only reference.

For the record, the character posted and the image was showing the same
(only difference would be style differences, I think, though I don't read
Marathi), in the Firefox browser.

Snehalata > do you have any screenshot in GIMP where this script is wrongly
displayed as another character?

My guess is that it would be a limitation in GTK+. Though, same as Andre,
getting more details on the problem would help (keep in mind we don't write
Marathi, so don't have any background on which character should show how,
and why it doesn't; though I know such problems exist, for instance I read
some CJK character would show different depending on whether you use fonts
targeted at Japanese or Chinese audience).

Indeed as far as I understood, manuals are translated exactly the same way
as the GUI. So the process should be the same, shouldn't it?
I don't think you actually need an account on gitlab.

The most up-to-date files are: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp-help
Maybe po files are hosted elsewhere, and maybe these are exactly the same
(or not; no idea). But in doubt, use the original ones.

Release of GIMP 2.10.6 planned for end of week

2018-08-07 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi!

We are planning the release of GIMP 2.10.6 around the end of the week. I
set a target date for 2018/08/10 though it is not set in stone. It might
actually happen a day before, as a few days after.

As a reminder, this is the branch gimp-2-10 (master branch is still a
moving target) where the release will happen.

If you wish to update the translation for your language, now is the time.

We are also quite happy of translators as we will announce a new language
at this release, very close to 100% GUI-wise, which will make the 81st
language for GIMP! Big thanks to the North Maharashtra University for this!

And thanks a lot everyone for the continuous work!

Very nice work!
Thanks to you and your team, Snehalata!

For the record though, we had a last-minute change of plan and decided to
release 2.10.4 on Wednesday, so a few days earlier than planned, hence
without Marathi. Don't worry though, GIMP has quite a regular release
schedule now, so I predict 2.10.6 will happen within 1 to 3 months.

Also our offer still applies, if you want to publish a short news after
your translation workshop happens. We will be happy. Maybe we can do this
in the form of a short interview if you prefer. :-)

I forgot to answer to the "when" question. We are planning the release next
weekend, thus either 7 or 8 of July (unless we end up late, that happens).
So this has to happen before if you want Marathi to be in GIMP 2.10.4. :-)
If not, no worry, it can be for a further release.

And to add a bit of info. We are in the process of soon releasing GIMP
2.10.4. Your translation could be part of this release if it happens
 quickly. ;-)

Nice to read. It feels like this will be a quality translation.
What is RMVS? Searching the web, I found a NGO "Rashtriya Manav Vikas
Samiti". Is that it?

By the way, if you wish to share your experience on translating GIMP on a
news post on gimp.org afterwards, we would be happy to have it. Maybe with
some nice photos of the workshop and attendees, and some text (not
necessarily long, as you see fit).

Recently we have been trying to get more community input/outreach on our
website, and a workshop to translate GIMP in Marathi is a cool event IMO.

I think this is mostly up to you to decide, since you are the expert in
Marathi here. We cannot really tell you what we think of your translation
since none of us speak Marathi (I think) and it seems it is even in lack of
a coordinator lately. If you really think your translation needs more
attention to be releasable, then we can wait, no problem.

On the other hand, if you think it is already quite usable, you can always
do it in steps, which means: submit your current version now, then do the
workshop, and later submit the revised translations.

In any case, translating a Free Software is a constant work-in-progress.
You can always improve it later if you wish (and hopefully you will
continue to improve the Marathi translation in the future).
Thanks.

I have no idea if they even have access to Damned Lies and if they
published these anywhere and I am just a bit scared they just drop the ball
and we lose a full translation in a new language just because the language
 is missing a coordinator.
So I would just go with any compromise. Also I have no idea myself what
is the usual process for translators. When people ask us how to translate
for GIMP, we usually just ask them to go and ask you, guys. :P

Release of GIMP 2.10.4 planned for Week-end of 7/8 July

2018-06-26 Thread Jehan Pagès via gnome-i18n
Hi!

We are planning a release of GIMP 2.10.4 possibly on Saturday 7 or Sunday 8
July 2018. As a reminder, this is the branch gimp-2-10 (master branch is
quite a moving target).

If you wish to update a bit the translation for your language, we'd be
happy of it.
Thanks all!
