Re: [GNC] Could not read the contents of GnuCash: Error opening directory '[path name here]': Permission denied

2018-11-16 Thread David Cousens
Scott

Good to hear it is all working. There is no gnucash-jz in the Linux MInt
Software Manager so it obviously didn't inherit it from Ubuntu. gnucash-jz
is a Snapcraft version of GnuCash (https://snapcraft.io/gnucash-jz) similar
to the flatpak I mentioned earlier which Ubuntu seem to have added to their
software offerings. The Software manager in Linux MInt has the
flathub/flatpak version as well as the version incorprated in their
distribution. These are maintained by individuals rather than the
distribution maintainers or the GnuCash team. In most cases it is the
flatpak or snap settings which have to be adjusted to allow the application
access to the system. Too difficult for me - much easier just to build it
from scratch.

Re: [GNC] Could not read the contents of GnuCash: Error opening directory '[path name here]': Permission denied

2018-11-16 Thread John Ralls
gnucash-jz is apparently a Snap installation of GnuCash; “jz” is for Jacob
Zimmerman, the maintainer. See
https://github.com/jacobzimmermann/gnucash-jz-snap
.

Like Flatpak, Snap is a sandboxed runtime environment. It probably lacks access
to the VeraCrypt drivers.

Looks like gnucash-jz is a snap software version.
snapcraft.io/gnucash-jz
jz is the initials of the maintainer of that version.

I think you are missing some other package to make the snap version
work, but I am guessing.

Hi David and David,

I just solved the problem. Looking in the Ubuntu Software Center, I had
"gnucash-jz" installed. When I installed it, that was the only version
of Gnucash visible. Now when I looked again, I saw both that one and
"GnuCash" (it says that it's version "1:2.6.19-1"; I don't know what the
"1:" means). I just removed the former and installed the latter, and now
everything is working fine. I am able to open my data file in the
mounted volume with no issues.

tofigure out which you are having and how to work around it.
First, are you able to open and mount the Veracrypt volume. You will
needto have the Veracrypt program installed and running and have your
Veracryptkey to succeed with that part. Second, some programs have
trouble workingwith network shared resources and others do not in

There are more possibilities, but those are the first things to try.

financial files outside of an encrypted volume. Of course I'm only
trying to open it when the volume is decrypted/mounted. When I look at
the data file's properties, it says I'm the owner of it. If I try to
open the file from GnuCash, or if I click to open it, it still fails the
same way, claiming a permission issue. But any other file in my mounted
volume can open just fine: LibreOffice files, etc.
It looks to me like the problem is that this version of GnuCash doesn't
work with mounted volumes. Perhaps I should reinstall GnuCash, or
install a different version.

There could be several problems, and you may need to do some research tofigure
out which you are having and how to work around it.

First, are you able to open and mount the Veracrypt volume. You will
needto have the Veracrypt program installed and running and have your
Veracryptkey to succeed with that part. Second, some programs have
trouble workingwith network shared resources and others do not in Ubuntu. You
may need touse your Files utility to navigate to the data file on the
Veracrypt Volumeand double click the filename to open the file.

There are more possibilities, but those are the first things to try.

Good Luck.

Re: [GNC] Could not read the contents of GnuCash: Error opening directory '[path name here]': Permission denied

2018-11-16 Thread David Cousens
Scott,

Where is your data file located. The error message indicates a permissions
problem not a problem in GnuCash itself. It may be that your data file is in
a directory you do not own and you may not own the file itself. If you used
administrator privileges to copy the data file to your system and/or create
the directory it is in for example. Your data file should be located
somewhere under your home directory /home/ where is your
username.

ls -al should list the permissions, owner and group for
your data file. They should be something like
-rw-r--r-- 1
'.gnucash
You will also see log files and backup files in your directory. If this is
OK check up the directory tree

cd # puts you in the directory containing your file
cd.. # puts you in the directory which
contains the directory containing your file
ls -al # list the directories and files

The containing directory should have permissions something like:

drwxr-xr-x 4

If the permissions especially for the file owner ( first group after d or -)
are not rwx and you do not at least have read and write access to the
directory GnuCash will not be able to open the file.

[GNC] Could not read the contents of GnuCash: Error opening directory '[path name here]': Permission denied

2018-11-16 Thread Scott Ellsworth
Dear all,

I recently installed Ubuntu 18.06 on a new computer. The version of
GnuCash that installs from the repository is v2.6.21. I cannot open my
GnuCash file located in a mounted volume from Veracrypt. For
comparison, I do not have this problem with any other program in Ubuntu
as far as I can see, and I do not have the problem with GnuCash v2.6.12
(in Ubuntu 16.04).
How do I fix this?

[GNC] formulas in scheduled transaction templates?

2018-11-16 Thread Elmar
I have been watching the back and forth on automatically calculating
taxes, etc. on invoices, and wondered about the following situation:
when I download transactions form my bank, it gives me the net deposit
of (e.g.) a salary.  Is there a way to create a template that
back-calculates the various taxes and the gross amount that the net is
derived from?  This may be US specific, but Social Security, Medicare,
State and Federal taxes are all definable by percentage of the gross.
But template entries (for scheduled  transactions) do allow formulas, do
they? - Elmar

Thank you for your answer, however I believe that I express myself badly. My
question is not about the reports themselves, it's about the “configuration of
the reports”. I want to save the "settings of the reports" in another place
(USB stick) different from where they are normally stored C: \ Users \ name \
AppData \ Roaming \ GnuCash etc.
Christopher said that I could use for each report: General / Always to print
the setting report, this is not a bad idea, but still every time I need the
report I must redo the configuration.
In short, how do I save the “ configuration of the reports” or setting in
another place easy to locate.

Hi Carlos, the email subject suggests you have customised the transaction
report to your needs. You may find that the option General/Add options summary
set to 'always' is designed to print the options modified, so that you can
recreate the same report.

[GNC] Updating Gnucash problem

2018-11-16 Thread Richard Jones
Hello
Can anyone advise how to fix this problem I have after trying
unsuccessfully to update to a more recent version of Gnucash?
Environment Windows 10. Existing Gnucash 2.6.6 2015-03.30. Tried to instal
version 3.3 - after setting restore point. Update appeared successful but
it would not work - error message appeared about not found file. I restored
system prior to restore point. All my program files are now the old
versions. When I start gnucash, the initial screen appears indicating it is
loading but then disappears and nothing else happens and no error mesage.
The program is seen as running in Task Manager but is doing nothing.
How can I get it working again?
Any advice much appreciated.

Make sure you copy your "DOT_GNUCASH" folder as well as your data file.
Where this folder resides varies by platform.
The Wiki should have a sub-page about making backups that explains where
these can be found: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GnuCash
I'm sorry I don't know the exact Wiki page; I'm sitting on an airplane
without network access.
Hope this helps,
