Re: [GNC] Reports in whole currency units

2019-01-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Other than entering your transactions in whole dollars, no.

An option would be to export or copy/paste to a spreadsheet and format those
cells to truncate or round the amounts. There you can also show amounts as
multiples of any value you like, for example, reporting in K’s or M’s of
dollars.

[GNC] Reports in whole currency units

2019-01-17 Thread Richard Gaede

Hi,

I have explored every avenue I could see to get reports to use whole
dollar amounts rather than dollars and cents. Is there some way I have
missed to configure reports to display whole dollars only?

Any input welcomed.

Thanks & regards

Re: [GNC] Copying settings, layout, and colors to another computer

2019-01-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I’ve encountered this use case before, though it was always on OS upgrades or
transitions when distro hopping.

I have sometimes wanted to migrate my data and my desired configs without
carrying over configs from no longer used apps, thus trimming cruft for a
*fresh* start.

It might also be a case of two different users on two different machines, but
wanting the config to be the same. They may or may not edit the same data file.
(not simultaneously of course)

In other words, you are asking specifically about gnucash data. Is that
how you plan to do it? Worrying about each application and what user
config data you need to copy over? You know such data HAS to be in your
user directory tree because multiple users are supported. So as long as
the entire user directory is copied, you should be all set.

Re: [GNC] Currency symbol (INR) not showing on Tax Invoice report

2019-01-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
You can assign a stylesheet to the Tax Invoice in options. (it uses the Default
stylesheet, by default)

So via Edit > Stylesheets you can either specify a different font for the
Default stylesheet that contains the symbol, or add a new stylesheet just for
the Tax Invoice. If you’re changing fonts on Default, you can do so just for
Numbers if you like. (leaving the rest of the fonts assignments alone)

I also noticed that the Tax Invoice options contain a Custom Css block.

You might instead be able to change the font just for numbers there if you can
find the class you need to target. (probably open the invoice in a browser and
use the built-in inspector) This method would allow you to always get the Rupee
symbol no matter what stylesheet is selected.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Treating tax authority as a vendor

2019-01-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Ron,

I do this for property taxes with no issues that I can think of.

If you want to do this with pass through payments like sales taxes/VAT you
might need to think carefully.

In such cases, you’d likely post via the invoice the tax charged/collected to a
"Liability:Sales Tax Due" account or something similar.

Entering a bill for the amount would ‘pay’ this upon posting and transfer the
amount to A/P. You may be fine with this, but if you’re expecting to use that
special liability account as a reference to what is owing or helping you to
track collections vs. remittances, you’ll run into some mental gymnastics on
the dates.

If you wait to post the tax bill till its actual payment date, you’ll forgo the
Bills Due Reminder feature for it.

Instead, you might want to just use a Scheduled Transaction for whatever day of
the month/quarter and be sure to set it for manual review so you can tailor the
amounts. With this, you might also be able to use a variable to assist with the
manual entry. It will prompt you for the variable’s value when you agree to
post the transaction. (such as the total sales you are reporting and then the
SX will have formulas to calculate the tax owed based on those sales, if that
is how you file, you’ll have to tailor that to your local laws/methods) I know
my local jurisdictions will collect for several authorities with one payment,
and then they let you deduct a “Vendor’s Compensation” from that. (usually
something small like 1 or 2% of the tax owed) That could be broken out in two
or more splits. That Vendor Compensation is technically a non-operations
revenue stream, not just a reduction of liability. (depending on your
jurisdiction) The SX could calculate all of this based on the Total Sales
variable you are reporting.

There might be some other considerations. Perhaps someone else who does or has
tried this can chime in.

Regards,
Adrien

Yes.  But you need to ensure that you have a system-wide backup/recovery

Thanks. I've upgraded several machines (real and virtual) from F25 ->
F29 over the past week or two. Some have gone more smoothly than
others. But of course YMMV. For example, there were some packaging
issues going from F27 -> F28 that required me to remove some packages,
upgrade, and then add them back in. I don't think code will be affected
by this, but you never know. This is also why I try very very very hard
to keep to distributed packages and not build-your-own.

The real key, however, is to make sure that all the services are
properly configured at the end of the process. For example, on one
server I had the httpd.conf file got reset, which required me to
re-configure it. I suspect this will happen on code, too. In other
case, a giflib program that I was using was dropped (upstream), causing
some scripts to break. This specifically wont affect code, but a
similar issue might arrise. It's "minor" things like this that I feel
will take the most amount of time, not the dnf system-upgrade steps.

I was not aware that release 3.4 might behave better. I have not tried it
yet for other reasons. This is good news.

I think that i mentioned that my test files do not have carriage returns,
line feeds or newlines, instead preceeding the less than symbols with 15
space characters.
I did not mention that they also contain transactions belonging to several
different bank accounts within the same OFX file.

I shall be sure to include a sanitized test file when I submit my bug
report.

Aside: I have discovered quite by accident that the keyboard on this
tablet has a Ctrl key that actually works to help manipulate a buffer. It
is still tricky to insert text after or in the middle of the previous
reply. I think it worked! 

Now if I can learn how to override the spell checker when it is wrong

Re: [GNC] Currency symbol (INR) not showing on Tax Invoice report

2019-01-17 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Not that I am an expert on these issues, but your observation suggests that the
font that the Tax Invoice uses lacks a valid INR symbol. I believe there are
style sheets for that report which can be used to change the font and remedy
the problem (provided the newly-selected font has a Rupee symbol).

Re: [GNC] Currency symbol (INR) not showing on Tax Invoice report

2019-01-17 Thread Deva -
Thanks Christopher.

Went back and tried the Printable/Easy/Fancy invoice reports and the currency
symbol shows up fine on those reports. So it’s only the Tax Invoice report that
has a problem.

My preference still remains the Tax Invoice report because it allows me to
change column headings. For instance, I have renamed the column header for
“Action” on my report to “SAC” because this is the place I capture the GST
related code that’s mandatory in our invoice. Since Printable/Easy/Fancy
invoices don’t allow me change column headers, I have to use Tax Invoice for
now.

However, following up on the wiki links in Frank’s mail further, I overlooked
an aspect in the second wiki, where it says I can set the currency symbol to
any text I want in the security/currency editor. So I went into that currency
editor and changed the rupee symbol to just text - INR. Now instead of the
symbol, it shows the text INR for all amounts on the invoice. I can work with
this for now, but the problem remains a puzzle.

Only flip side is, now even my account tree page shows INR instead of the rupee
symbol and takes up more column space. I kinda liked the symbol display, but
alas we live to fight the battle another day!

Thank you all for your help. Much appreciated.

Cheers.

With MacOS it'll be very difficult to investigate this; usually we'd advocate
'bisecting' i.e. try various releases until the exact breaking one is found,
but I'm not sure this is feasible with MacOS.

Sorry, and good luck.

Hello,

Please see attached for a sample invoice I generate out of GnuCash based on the
Tax Invoice report (sensitive data has been masked). Today was the first time I
tried to run this report from GnuCash 3.4 and I noticed that the INR currency
symbol is showing up as a missing symbol icon.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I tried turning off the display of currency symbol in the report via
Edit->Report Options, but didn’t see anything to that effect.

[GNC] Treating tax authority as a vendor

2019-01-17 Thread gnucash . dgr9z
Hi all,

Is it recommended/not recommended to set up your local tax authority/ies as
vendors and pay taxes against bills? Are there advantages or disadvantages to
doing this from an accounting perspective? Similarly, are their design
assumptions in Gnucash that would make it a good/bad way to set up tax payments?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [GNC] Tax Issues

Adrien,

Your observations about the limiting aspects of the interface on this feature
have been raised before; I will note that there is one exception to the single
account tax option rule: you can designate an account and its children to the
same tax option setting in one pass. This can be helpful if you have, say,
multiple dividend accounts entered as subaccounts under Income:Dividends.

Re: [GNC] Features

2019-01-17 Thread David Cousens

1. Import transactions from banking accounts using QFX?

Yes QFX is a proprietary form of OFX and GnuCash can import it.
2. Does it allow for backup/recovery?

This depends on whether you use the XMLtext file file format or one of the
database backends. For the XML format, it creates a backup each time you
open the file in the same folder the file is in. It also creates a log file
which can be imported for each session. If you have a file problem you can
open a previous backup that was working correctly then import the log files
up to the point where it fails. A full backup strategy with offsite storage
is the users responsibility. Some of us store our files on cloud servers
where one arm of the backup strategy is the server backups.

For the database backends you need to implement a database backup strategy

https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/basics-backup1.html
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Backup

3. Can I import data from Moneydance or do I start all over?

That will depnd on what formats moneydance can export. GnuCash has OFX/QFX
,QIF and CSV import facilities. I believe Moneydance can export QIF files
and /or CSV ( comma or tab delimited).

https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-help/import-qif.html

4. Does it have some sort of budget?

Yes it has a budgeting system. I don't use it at the moment . Someone else
may be able to comment further.

I don’t use this facility, but based on my recollections of other threads here,
no.

QFX if I understand correctly is a proprietary variety of OFX, which GnuCash
*can* import. Do a list search for QFX specific questions or work arounds.
Since most apps or services can also export CSV, it is recommended to use that
instead. Otherwise, I seem to recall that you might be able to manually
tweak/edit the QFX file to make it conform to OFX standards and then import,
but don’t quote me on that. Perhaps someone more familiar with this will chime
in for you.

> 2. Does it allow for backup/recovery?

That is a file manager function of your operating system. (If you’re using
MacOS, you have Time Machine built-in, but you can always use other solutions,
including copy and pasting the data file to any other location of your choosing
on a schedule you prefer)

There is some ‘recovery’ functionality of ‘replaying’ log files but this is an
off-case. You’re more likely to simply copy over a backup file and proceed from
there.

> 3. Can I import data from Moneydance or do I start all over?

Can Moneydance export CSV? Then yes. Again, do a list search on ‘Moneydance’. I
recall seeing it discussed somewhat over the past few years.

> 4. Does it have some sort of budget?
>
Somewhat. I’ve used it a bit. It is rather limited, not very kind to repetitive
entry (no copy/paste ability of entire periods) but it does the job, can even
estimate a budget based on past transactions, and reporting is fairly
configurable.

It is not designed for the ‘envelope’ method though if that is what you are
looking for. (there are some round-about methods of using GnuCash in that
fashion, but it is generally advised otherwise to use a 3rd party budgeting
tool and just enter the actual transactions in Gnucash)

I do find that using it in conjunction with the Transaction Report comparing
periods is very instructive and helpful to see if I am making progress in my
spending goals, or beating my head against a wall.

>
> If I have to start over, it is no big deal but I do need to be able to import
> using a downloaded transaction file.

I would start with an empty file, creating your desired accounts and start
entering fresh data. (you can estimate your starting balances to get going)
Then once you are comfortable after a few weeks/months, then import your
historical data from Moneydance. (you’ll need to edit/delete those starting
balance transactions as they will be now made up of those historical
transactions)

Adrien
