[GNC] BackupGnuCash updated for Java 11

2020-03-03 Thread Chris Good
Hi,

I've updated my BackupGnuCash app for java 11 which is the default version
of java on Ubuntu 18.04 and derivatives like Mint 19.

As the app is now a modular java app, it is distributed as a runtime image
which includes the required java runtime, so it is not necessary to have
java installed on your system.

The new BackupGnuCash version is 2.0.0.

Please see:

sh

Windows:

Regards,

Chris Good

When I make the mistake of trying toimport transactions that have already
been imported, the matcher dialog appears empty. Check the content of the
file you're trying to import and see if it's stuff that's already been
imported?

European banking changes forced some changes in aqbanking that adversely
affected gnucash US ofx/qfx imports.

Try Gnucash version 3.7, or wait for 3.9.

Missed one other point , if you are doing a local install in $HOME/.local
you remove the "sudo" from the make install command as it won't need admin
privileges.

I can work up a script to do th install but it would take a couple of days,
mainly to debug and test it, as I will be busy over the next day or so.

Re: [GNC] How to install GnuCash from Source for Linux ?

2020-03-03 Thread David Cousens
Jimmy

I don't have a script to build GnuCash but I do have a script for intalling the
dependencies.
A build script wouldn't be too difficult to setup and could be pretty generic
for all versions
of GnuCash. I do have scripts for development builds in a development
environment with various options
on debugging etc but i have never set them up for building the stable version.
It is pretty simple

Assume you are starting with an unpacked tarball ina directory gnucash-3.8 for
system wide install in /usr/localwhich
has the sources in a subdirectory gnucash and are initially located in
gnucash-3.8

mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local -DWITH_PYTHON=ON ..
make
sudo make install

If you need to do a rebuild for some reason change to the build directory then
type
rm -rf * #clears the previous build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local -DWITH_PYTHON=ON ..
make
sudo make install

You could put the commands in a these bash script and then run from the
gnucash-3.x directory.

There are other options to cmake ( see cmake help and the breakout page on the
build options in the wiki.

If you are doing a local install for a single user you
would substitute "/usr/local" with "$HOME/.local" in the above.

[GNC] Problems importing American Express QFX files into GNUCash

2020-03-03 Thread Jonathan Bentz
I'm running GNUCash 3.8 and was manually importing my credit card
statements yesterday via QFX and when I tried to import a QFX file from
AMEX, it was blank. I have successfully imported QFX files from AMEX for a
few years now and as recently as December of 2019 I have never encountered
this.

I download the QFX file to my local Win10 machine, then "import" it into
GNUCash, and there are no transactions listed.

Any idea what's going on, or what I could try? Thanks.

Re: [GNC] Am I being a muppet?

2020-03-03 Thread Adrien Monteleone
You’ve discovered the drawback to using the ‘Close Books’ procedure. (which is
neither necessary, or recommended by the documentation) You can use it if you
really want to, but you don’t have to for the software to function properly.
Some older software or those with a longer heritage require books to be closed
in order to even run some standard reports, or simply as a requirement. Closing
books used to be practically and physically necessary to generate paper reports
when the journals were on paper. GnuCash is much more modern in this respect.
Closing books simply creates entries in each expense and income account to
balance it to zero. It uses Equity:Retained Earnings as the balancing split.
There is no locking of historical transactions, or any other permanent change
made. If you intentionally or inadvertently edit, add or delete a 2018
transaction with respect to accounts or amounts, you’ll now have a mess on your
hands. (another good reason not to close the books)

I don’t use the procedure, so I can’t comment on how this works, but I see many
if not most reports have options to filter closing entries out. Give those a
try and let us know what you find.

If you want to ‘unclose’ a period, simply delete the closing entries that were
generated by the procedure. It is probably easiest to do this from the Equity
account. If you just want to play with unclosing make a backup first, then work
on a copy and keep the copy of the file you prefer.

Adrien

Ian

Model the deposit ticket. This was a touch more obvious for me since
very low volume meant usually several items to deposit before making a
trip to the bank. But you can do this even if depositing daily.

Create an account, undeposited cash << the money is technically yours
when the negotiable paper is received, not when you get around to
depositing it >> As items for deposit come in, enter them here. You can
think of this as the list of items on your deposit ticket. When you make
the deposit, you debit the bank account and credit undeposited cash for
the balance << no going back to zero; no undeposited items >>

When you get your bank statement, match deposits to the deposits in
undeposited cash, and the transaction above this (up to the previous
deposit) will be the individual items on that deposit.

Re: [GNC] grouping deposited items

2020-03-03 Thread Adrien Monteleone
If your statement shows you total deposits and total withdrawals and you want
to see if those two match, then the proper procedure is called ‘reconciliation’
and the documentation should cover this in some detail.

The basics are this:

1. Click the Reconcile button while viewing the account in question.
2. In the pop-up, set the statement date and the ending balance from the
statement. (take not of opening balance, it should agree with the statement)
3. Check off each item in the deposit and the withdrawal columns that match
individual transactions on your statement.
4. As you check items off, notice they are totaled under each column (what I
think you are looking for)
5. When all items that match your statement have been checked off, the
‘Difference’ amount in the bottom right should be zero, which means you’ve
successfully reconciled. You can then click the Finish button on the toolbar.

If the Difference is not zero, you either missed a transaction to check off, or
there are one or more transactions missing that need to be entered and then
checked off, or, your starting balance was off because of a previously
unfinished reconciliation. (note that editing a transaction after
reconciliation will un-reconcile it. When doing such an edit, simply go through
reconciliation again, check the edited transaction(s) and click Finish)

It is probably best to start reconciliation from the oldest date in your
GnuCash books and work forward in time, statement by statement till you are up
to date.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] New User - Unique Transaction Number & Dates

2020-03-03 Thread Adrien Monteleone
One of the accounts you are trying to use may have been inadvertently set to
GBP. From the Accounts tab, click the arrow at the far right of the header bar
and check off to show ‘commodity’. This will add a column showing you the
currency assignments for all accounts. (be sure to expand any that are
collapsed)

I’d suspect you tried to enter a transaction between two accounts, one of which
was EUR and one which was GBP. Accounts can be denominated in currencies
independent of the main book currency. To fix an errant account, simple select
it and click the Edit button on the toolbar (or the Edit entry in the
right-click menu) and change the currency to EUR. You can re-hide the commodity
column if you no longer need it.

Also check Preferences > Accounts and make sure Default Currency is set to
Locale which should be EUR, unless your OS has a different local currency set.
In that case, either change it from the OS, or use the ‘Choose’ option to make
it different from the OS. When you create a new account, it will default to
using the currency based on this setting. (but can always be changed manually)
