Hi All:

For at least 2 weeks, I have been unable to obtain a quote for HKD (Hong
Kong dollar).

Is anyone else having this problem?? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Works for me (this is in Linux):

Several questions come to mind to help you with this:

1) What version of GnuCash are you using?

   I'm running 3.10

2) What OS/Distro are you using?

   Linux Ubuntu Mate 18.04

3) How do you open GnuCash and/or the GnuCash data file?

I click on a shortcut link on my desktop

4) How are you shutting down GnuCash?

I click "Save"if not previously saved and then click the X in the
top left of the GC screen

   5) What backend storage method are you using?

Don't know exactly what that means? Maybe it means where and how is
the gc work file stored? It's local.

6) Are you SURE that you're not somehow modifying a reconciled transaction
from the other side?

   Yes, very sure.

   Thanks,

   Carl

Re: [GNC] Disappearing entries

2020-06-17 Thread David Carlson
Most probably no complete transactions have actually disappeared, yet your
email suggests that you have not ruled out that possibility in your case.

If that had actually happened, some other account would also have
changed. Granted, if it were an income or expense account, it might not
jump out as an error.

Has the anomaly always appeared as a starting balance error in a
reconciliation, or has it appeared as a discrepancy in a total running
balance?

Has it ever corrected itself or has it ever been necessary to add a
transaction rather than simply re-do the last reconciliation?

What operating system and what version of GnuCash?

Note that changing just about anything in a transaction will unreconcile it,
though this should not affect the balance.

As for ‘missing’ transactions, do you ever use a filtered view? (I believe an
indication the register is filtered will show near the top right)

Re: [GNC] Lost all data after install

2020-06-17 Thread Derek Atkins
At each step you should do File -> Open and then File -> Save As
Be sure to Save-As to a *new* file so as to not overwrite the old one.

At some upgrade stages you may be able to skip the Open, as it may
remember the last one (although if you have multiple data files it will be
the last one you had open).

This auto-open didn't work across all major releases.

Apologies, hopefully I've replied correctly this time.

It seems that I have skipped several versions and my data is not compatible
with 3.10. I shall do as you suggest, go back to an early version and
upgrade incrementally. I'll start with 2.6 and let you know how I get on.

Thank you,

As for the data file location, it should be in your user space. A
sub-folder of documents is a good choice.

Re: [GNC] Lost all data after install

2020-06-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
First, please send replies to the list, not just me personally. That way others
can help, and everyone can benefit from the discussion. (use reply-list or
reply-all if that is easier)

-

The file can be located anywhere you want. It doesn’t need to be in a
particular folder.

If the previous version was 2.6.19 or 2.6.21, you may have found a bug. (or you
may need to step up more slowly)

The recommended upgrade path from 2.6.x is to first get to 2.6.19 or 2.6.21,
then upgrade to 3.0, then upgrade to 3.10. (you might be able to use 3.1
instead of 3.0, and maybe even jump straight from 2.6.19/21 --> 3.10, but a
developer or someone more versed in this would have to comment)

If the version was 2.4, or even older like 2.2, then you’ll have to step
through each of those first.

For example, 2.2 --> 2.4 --> 2.6 --> 2.6.21 --> 3.0 --> 3.10

-

See the Wiki FAQ on upgrading paths:
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Using_Different_Versions.2C_Up_And_Downgrade

Note that it recommends you run Actions > Check & Repair after each time you
open the file with the next higher version.

Of course, work with a *copy* of the file. Once it is squared away, you can
make a new backup of the converted file, and then delete the older backup.

Regards,
Adrien

Thanks for your reply.  However, the problem is I have a Hong Kong bank

Price Database to reflect the USD amount for tax reporting.

Is anyone else having this problem?? Any suggestions?

Re: [GNC] Lost all data after install

2020-06-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
#1 - if you indeed have a backup, then no information has been lost.

#2 - What operating system?* Also, you mentioned ‘latest’ version of GnuCash.
Is that 3.10?

#3 - The LCK file is a lock file. Its very presence will normally trigger a
warning when starting GnuCash (or opening that associated data file) that the
file is already open. You are given the options to not open the file, open it
read-only, or to just open normally anyway.

#4 - If you aren’t getting this warning, something might be amiss, but you can
still get to your data file.

Open GnuCash. Then navigate to File > Open and navigate to where your data file
is stored, and proceed to open it.

GnuCash will then remember where the data file is stored and open it
automatically the next time you start GnuCash.

*On some operating systems, you can’t double-click the data file to open it.
You must use ‘File > Open’ instead.

Regards,
Adrien

p.s. - not sure what that text file would be. Check its contents. You might not
need it. Your data file has a ‘.gnucash’ extension.

[GNC] Lost all data after install

2020-06-17 Thread sinclair turrell
Hello - I have just downloaded the latest version of Gnu cash and
installed it in order to update an old version. Despite assuring me during
install that I would not lose data, the new version cannot find my saved
data. I backed up my data and have this as 3 files - a GnuCash Financial
Data File, a text document and an LCK file. When I open the Data file all
that loads is an account where every value is 0. Is there any way that I
can recover my data? I have been diligently keeping my financial records on
Gnu cash for more than 7 years and would be devastated if all this
information is lost.

Thank you.

Because the currency symbol isn't defined in the font you're using, is
the usual cause.

Re: [GNC] Question marks instead of currency in reports

2020-06-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Your font probably doesn’t have that symbol. Check your custom CSS file and
find a different font. I’d use either the Mac Character Viewer or Font Book to
find a suitable one. It looks like that is Unicode 20B1. A simple search in
Character Viewer for ‘peso’ brought it right up. Select the character in the
search results in the middle pane, then use the bottom-right pane to click each
sample to see what fonts have it. (that is a really bad UI/UX for this, but it
is doable)

Also check Tools > Security editor and make sure a symbol is displayed there.
If not, you can reset it manually.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Trouble opening ancient files

2020-06-17 Thread D via gnucash-user
Online resources indicate that Windows support was added for 2.2, so finding
Windows binaries before that may be futile. According to the wikipedia article,
that was in 2007.

The idea is that both you and the other entity might have your own
unique identifiers for the Bill or Invoice, so this lets you put them
both on. This boils down to "naming is hard".

When you send out an Invoice to a customer you have your invoice number
on it, but the customer may want something on it (like a PO#).

When you receive a Bill from a vendor it will have their invoice# on it,
but you might want your own counter for it.

This is why there are two cases.

These numbers are irrespective of due dates.

You MAY be able to find them on sourceforge under the Files section.
Either that or you'll need to install an old VM to build 2.0 yourself.
Unfortunately the earliest Windows exe I've got is 2.4.0 which is way
too new for you.

Hmm. Surprised that you could jump from 2.2.9 to 3.10 without any
issues! I would have expected that you'd have to hit 2.4 or 2.6 first.

You would need to provide a copy of the file in (or possible work with
the devs to recreate it) in order to get that warning fixed
appropriately.
