[GNC] Newest version for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

2021-09-28 Thread Jeff
Short of building from source, is there a link anywhere for upgrading
from 4.2 to the next compatible stable version on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS?  The
Debian list is too far behind since I run multiple O.S.'s.  I tried the
suggested PPA, I think it was sicklylife something or other for 4.3.
Totally screwed up a test set of books that I use just to test new
versions before I turn it loose on my multiple sets of books for
family.  It would be nice to run the same working versions on my Ubuntu
Server (Micro$soft bricked my main server and had to replace it, so I am
migrating everything I can to Ubuntu) and my dual boot laptop.

I have tried several times to build from source but; I am too old school
on my programming language list (i.e. Cobol, Pascal, forth) to get a
build to work.  Every time I have tried it spits out in a foreign
language some error list and fails to build.  My bad.

You would think that someone who wrote over 100,000 lines of C++ code to
handle up to 2 billion inventory items for a POS and parts ordering
system at best cost could easily handle this, but the languages you use
are all too new to me.

I would settle for a copy of "Building the Newest Version of GNC for
Dummies Course" book.

[GNC] Gnucash 4.8 Build Fail

2021-09-28 Thread Harry G McGavran Jr via gnucash-user

I have the same problem that David reported on this list, but
with Ubuntu 20.04:

Gnucash 4.8 won't build --

  .
[ 97%] Built target org.gnucash.GnuCash.dialogs.sxs.gschema.valid-target

I tried chasing this a bit, but I'm not a cmake expert by any means...

Re: [GNC] Account setup

2021-09-28 Thread davidcousens49

Rogier

The GunCash Help manual
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-help/trans-edit.html discusses this
very briefly " press the Split button on the Toolbar or select Actions → Split
Transaction". The entry of multisplit transactions is discussed in detail in
the help manual at
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-help/trans-multi-enter.html.

There is also some discussion in the Guide
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-guide/chapter_txns.html.

Once the splits of the transaction are displayed you can use the mouse or tab
key to get to the item you wish to change. The tab key ( nd not the Enter key)
can take you past the last split line in a transaction to add an additional line
where necessary. The accounts fields will give you drop down lists to select
from. GnuCash forces a transaction to be balanced, i.e. the sums of credit and
debit entries (or deposit and withdrawal if using nonaccounting terminology)
must be equal and GnuCash will arbitrarily introduce an entry to an imbalance
account to force this when editing or entering multisplit transactions.

The trick is to adjust the debits and credits to the other desired transaction
splits so that any entry to an imbalance account split becomes zero before
pressing enter to close the transaction. This can be a challenge until you get
the hang of it.

Re: [GNC] Account setup

2021-09-28 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
thanks,

I agree with you, in this case though it is about the one time setup of the
opening balances, and I made a typo, but I was not able to figure out how
to edit the transaction. But I think maybe I have it now, I think it is you
go in to the GL Journal and then you can edit the line items. The whole
point is that if you keep that setup in ONE transaction, you can make sure
that it balances. Having said that, I am not clear how to add another line
item to an existing transaction.

For anything after that, I would agree with your observation that it is not
kosher to edit a transaction, you always make a correcting entry. I think
what I have here is a special case, just setting up the opening balances. I
was moving from QB to Gnucash.

Re: [GNC] Account setup

Thanks to everyone for helping out.

What worked for me in the end was

1. to set up the COA first, without attempting any opening balances, and
then
2. to create a single transaction to set up the opening balances on
1/1/2020.

As it was, I had an ending trial balance on 12/31/2020, but there were a
few mistakes floating around, so in my setup, I made those corrections, and
settled it against retained earnings, by making that the final line item in
my opening transaction.

- One thing I was not able to figure out. If I do set up this way, and I
made a mistake in my initial g/l transaction is there a way to edit that
transaction, or am I doomed to simply start over and do it the right way?
- And since I made a false starts, I now have a couple of sets of books
that I want to get rid of, but I wasn't sure how to do it, other than just
deleting the file in the file system.

a) Correcting the books --- this depends on how formal you are. Gnucash
will allow you to edit exiting transactions. That is the informal way,
maybe OK for personal books unlikely to be audited. The technically
correct way in formal bookkeeping is to enter a correction transaction
offsetting the error, with description referring to the original being
corrected. That's what I do, but then most of my books are
organizational, not my personal books. A treasurer of an organization
should do it the right way.

b) Deleting  books --- yes, simply delete the file. Just like to make a
backup you make a copy of the file.

Re: [GNC] New flatpak version 4.7+ crashes in my Ubuntu 20.04 - any help?

2021-09-28 Thread David H
Les,

4.7 has only just been released so you were probably previously using 4.6
for some time as it was released in late June I think :-) Yes the new
flatpak version has the problem you describe, a fixed version will be
released in the next day or so. You can either just wait or revert to the
previous flatpak version if you need to use Gnucash in the next day or so -
details at https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak which basically says the
following

DowngradingIt can't be done from the average package manager, but it can be
done from the command line. It's a two-step command:

flatpak remote-info --log flathub org.gnucash.GnuCash # list all
commits in the repo
flatpak update --commit=HASH org.gnucash.GnuCash # checkout commit
HASH in the repo

Cheers David H.

Rogier,  (my apology for not spelling it correctly on my last reply)

I have been able to edit that transaction even years later as I recently
found some additional items that should have been entered -- but
weren't.  I know the purist will say that you should just create an
additional transaction for that date with the adjustments.  I am not a
purist!  This works for me.

Yes, I am able to add new lines to the original transaction, change
existing amounts, even delete a line that turned out to be a duplicate.

You can always edit a transaction.  This is a nice thing.  This is a bad
thing.  This will help get you out of trouble.  This will get you into
trouble.  Beware!  Your books are only as good as you make them.

Re: [GNC] Account setup

2021-09-28 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen

I actually used gnucash once years ago, and I am happy we have seen
significant development since then.

The reason I switched back to it this time is because this was the 2nd time
I had bad experience with QB, and in actual fact it was overkill for a
small business anyway. I was forced into it because of a bookkeeper who
seemed to be comfortable with QB only. In the end, the problem was she
"knew" QB, but not accounting. When I had my problem with them in 2019,
there were two features which my bookkeeper had used inadvertently neither
one of which worked as advertised. One was a loan amortization which seemed
to expense the principal repayments instead of the interest. In the end I
got so fed up with them that I dumped the whole thing, and decided to go
back to Gnucash for this venture, and it just took me this long, because my
taxes are now due, and I have not had a lot of activity during the
pandemic. But it's done now, and thanks to everyone for the help.

Re: [GNC] New flatpak version 4.7+ crashes in my Ubuntu 20.04 - any help?

2021-09-28 Thread Les
I have been using the Flatpak 4.7 on Linux Mint 19.3 for some time
without problem.  But this morning it will not open, even if I click on
the current file name.  It begins to open and then crashes.  I have
tried this on 2 different Laptops running the same os. and both crash.
Does this have to do with the new version of GC?

Thanks,

Les

Subject: Update mariadb module from gnucash-on-flatpak (944a1f6c)
Date: 2021-09-27 19:34:49 +

Can anyone suggest a way to investigate the problem further? Tried
updating. I'm reverting to GnuCash 4.6 in the meantime to use the
program (as I do daily).

Thanks in advance,

Yes I'm having possibly the same issue on Linux Mint 20, briefly flashes up
the 4.7 version screen and then nothing.

Trying to run it from a terminal window results in the following warnings
if it helps.

[GNC] New flatpak version 4.7+ crashes in my Ubuntu 20.04 - any help?

2021-09-28 Thread Dan Ståhlberg via gnucash-user
(apologies if this have been discussed on the list already, just joined today)

I have a problem on my Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS when version 4.7+ was installed in
flatpak yesterday. The program starts, briefly show the welcome dialog and then
crashes. It seems there is some system trap, see this /var/log/syslog excerpt:

Sep 28 09:36:47 X systemd[9025]: Started
app-flatpak-org.gnucash.GnuCash-11322.scope.
Sep 28 09:36:48 X kernel: [ 843.827669] traps: gnucash[11331] trap int3

libglib-2.0.so.0.6800.3[7f3959fa3000+8d000]

here's the flatpak info (a system install):

Can anyone suggest a way to investigate the problem further? Tried updating.
I'm reverting to GnuCash 4.6 in the meantime to use the program (as I do daily).

Thanks in advance,
