No such report exists. Please feel free to relearn scheme and submit as a
PR on GitHub.

You may find the Lot Viewer report (exposed only when running GnuCash with
--extra) a useful starting point.

Good luck!

[GNC] Lots report?

2022-09-03 Thread Brent McBride
Hi GnuCash experts,

Does GnuCash have a report that shows the current unrealized gain/loss of open
lots?

Such a report would help answer questions such as:

  * Which lots held longer than one year have the largest unrealized gains,
and would therefore be most advantageous (tax-wise) if donated to charity?
  * Which lots would be the best candidates for tax loss/gain harvesting?

The Lots UI has almost everything needed to answer these questions: Date
opened, balance, realized gains. But it is missing one key piece of info:
Unrealized gains (what would the gain/loss be if the remaining balance was sold
at the most recent price?).

Further, the Lots UI only shows a single commodity. The ideal would be a report
that shows open lots in all accounts (perhaps configurable by date, accounts,
gain/loss amount, etc). I thought maybe one of the existing reports would have
this info, but haven't yet found one.

The "Investment Portfolio" report seems close. It shows accounts, but not lots
within the accounts.

Any suggestions?

My background:
I recently moved ~20 years of data from Quicken to GnuCash, and am still
learning the ropes.

I've written some scripts using the super-useful piecash and openpyxl tools to
update/create various Excel docs from my GnuCash db. I suppose I could write a
similar script to generate a Lots report in Excel.

Or if I'm in the mood for pain, I could relearn Scheme enough to create a
custom GnuCash report (I briefly taught Scheme as a TA in college over 20 years
ago—all I remember now is it uses lots of parentheses ).

But before going either route, I want to verify with you experts that there is
no preexisting report.

Thanks for your help!

Greetings, James Baxter.

You replied directly to me instead of the list.

I am copying you AND the GnuCash User email list with my response so everyone
can see it.

I changed the subject of the email to the topic you mentioned plus the one I
mentioned so people know what we're discussing.

Note I also edited the thread ABOVE this message so you can see exactly what
parts of the message I am reacting to. I'm NOT including the whole thread. I'm
NOT responding to the digest.

When you respond to the Digest, please copy the subject line from the digest
topic you're responding to to the subject of the email.

When you have a new topic to discuss, please do not respond to a random message
from the list. Create a NEW message, and give it a helpful email subject so we
know the topic you're asking about, and send your NEW message directly to the
email list. Use this address:

gnucash-u...@lists.gnucash.org

When you send a message to that address, all of us who subscribe to the list
get the message. It might take a few hours, but most reasonable topics get
reasonable responses within a few hours or days.

Folks on the list become frustrated when these messages don't follow the
suggestions because it makes responding via the email list very difficult.

As for the topic you mentioned in your message to me, I personally cannot help
with the "stock ticker" topic, and that's why the discussion has to happen on
the list.

If you have someone who helps you with the computer, maybe you can show this
message to them and ask them to help you learn things like how to edit your
reply (to trim extraneous lines) and change the subject of an email message (to
keep the topic together in a "thread").

I am afraid the person who _I_ responded to with my lighthearted comment was
asking about disciplinary actions. In case you don't understand why that might
be called for, it's because of the "Netiquette" (Internet Etiquette) issues
I've been describing in this message.

As far as I know, the most likely disciplinary action would be moderation,
meaning someone would review each message you send to the list, and if your
message doesn't follow the protocol, the list moderator would, if they have the
time, suggest corrective action. Or if they're busy that day they might just
ignore your message.

We don't want that to happen! We really DO want to help. Unfortunately email is
difficult enough to manage already, and the GnuCash-user list has rules that
make it more likely we'll understand your issue and keep it organized to help
everyone learn to use GnuCash.

Note the text below... That's one other rule I forgot. When someone replies to
you and you reply, please copy your response to the email list. That keeps
everything public, AND because I am not an authority nor am I any sort of
expert. I'm just another subscriber to the list.

Thanks for the quick response. The package manager did indeed install
both guides (each in several languages, in spite of there being only
one locale specified in the OS!); apparently the author(s?) of the
installers didn't properly configure the dependencies so the executable
can't find them. I've now got them bookmarked in my browser.

I can't check on the storage locations yet because the wiki is offline
again – it took me two days to find it up and running so I could sign
up for this list. However, I don't think the scheduled transactions
aren't available; the editor shows them all (with the proper "Next
Occur" dates, several of which are now in the past).

[GNC] Display report values in whole curremcy units

2022-09-03 Thread Richard Gaede via gnucash-user

To those who responded thank you.

I am aware of rounding issues. I do a fair bit of work in Excel which
takes input in various formats, and still produces a correctly rounded
result. This is what I was looking for.

That said, no further comment is necessary. It has been kindly pointed
out to me that I have had a Senior's moment. It appears I asked the same
question in 2019. The answer today is the same as then. What I seek is
outside the scope of GNU Cash, and there appears to be insufficient call
for it to warrant the work involved in changing.

Thanks all.

I noticed Yahoo stopped carrying the price of gold as XAUUSD=X, so I guess any
symbol on any service can disappear, it is just odd for it to disappear for
currency or gold or metal.  Of course, they have to get it from someone else,
so they have little control.  You might be able to find a new symbol with the
same meaning.  Otherwise, you can find a place that displays the rate and
manually put in a price, say at the end of each week or month.  Writing an
automated perl price updated for a new site is probably beyond most of us.

Re: [GNC] Change Linked Document Path

2022-09-03 Thread Geoff Storer
Hi Jim
Answers to your questions

Q: what exactly do you see that is not working for you? What do you see
that makes you say, "[GnuCash] looks for the attached document in the
windows document folder"?

Ans: Error box pops up with following message
GnuCash could not find the linked document.:
C:\Users\jscmu\Documents\Globird Gas 220728.pdf
See attached screenshot

Q: When you open your GnuCash accounts book, and find a transaction with
an attached document, what GnuCash operations do you do, in order to
open or find that document?

Ans: I go to a register for the account from where the payment was made and
beneath
the column headed "R" (for reconcile) click on the icon that signifies the
document is present.
Also included in attached screenshot

Q: In that transaction, what does GnuCash display as the location of the
document? (This is important, because the exact spelling will show us if
the document path is relative or absolute.)

Ans: C:\Users\jscmu\Documents\-document name-

Q: What specifically did you try in GnuCash to point to the correct
location of the documents? What do you mean by "editing the preferences"?

Ans: In top menu bar selected
edit/preferencesthen selected General from left hand options panel
In that screen I then selected "Linked files" from the options displayed to
the right
I used the dropdown arrow in this option and navigated to the folder where
copies of
my invoices reside. See attached screenshot "Linked files".

Q: What did the preferences say before you made this change?

Ans: Good question. Not exactly sure what it said before I changed it. But
when I
now click the "Clear" button (to the right of the dropdown arrow) I see a
message
as per screenshot "Change linked Docs".

Q: What do the preferences say now?

Ans: As per "linked files" screenshot
"Path Head for linked files Relative Path" with option "GNU Invoices" (the
name of my
invoices folder)

Q: What version of GnuCash are you using?

Ans: I am using ver 4.11 Build ID: 4.11 (2022-06-25)

Thanks for taking the time to look at this

Geoff
