Re: [GNC] getting price quotes

2022-11-30 Thread Martin Booth via gnucash-user

Hi Alan,
To update F::Q on windows
You would go to start menu and then to gnucash menu, in there you
should find update online quotes, this will update F::Q
However, I would recommend you update GC now to the latest version
4.12.
regards,
Martin

Re: [GNC] Is there any way to remove all-filling the date?

2022-11-30 Thread Derek Atkins
GnuCash will always re-select the last date you used to create a new
transaction. So if you are entering multiple transactions, when you open
the register it will default to today.. Change that to 6 months ago and
enter the transaction. Then the *next* transaction (in that register)
will default to that same date 6 months ago...

If you close the register, then you'll lose that.

The date does not carry over into another register.

However, how many registers do you really NEED to open? If you enter them
from your asset or liability accounts, you don't need to open many.

[GNC] Is there any way to remove all-filling the date?

2022-11-30 Thread Dr. David Kirkby
If one is entering a transaction the date defaults to today. That seems
quite reasonable. However, if entering historical transactions, that date
needs changing. It’s easy to overlook that, so a transaction made 6 months
ago gets recorded today.

Is there any way to stop GnuCash automatically selecting todays date, and
so forcing one to select a date manually? I believe that would reduce the
chances of errors when entering old transactions.

He can tell me at the end of the year how much the sum of all items have

me the exact amount of depreciation on every item, but I will just ignore
that, and record the sum. He doesn’t normally give me the individual items

normally he doesn’t give me a detailed breakdown.

In previous years my accountant has never expected me to work out the
depreciation - he does it once per year.

If I was inspected by HMRC, I doubt that they are going to quibble about
the fact I don’t know the depreciation of assets on a particular day. If
they do, my accountant would be able to supply them.

The HMRC website lists what is inspected of directors - I put a copy below.
It mentions “Details of assets owned by the company” but does not actually
define what details they are.

Does changing the total value once/year in GnuCash under

Accounting records

Seems reasonable to me.  I would ask the CPA/Accountant if that
satisfies the below that you referenced.

You must keep accounting records that include:

- all money received and spent by the company, including grants and
payments from coronavirus (COVID-19) support schemes

- details of assets owned by the company
- debts the company owes or is owed
- stock the company owns at the end of the financial year
- the stocktakings you used to work out the stock figure
- all goods bought and sold
- who you bought and sold them to and from (unless you run a retail
business)

You must also keep any other financial records, information and
calculations you need to prepare and file your annual accounts and Company
Tax Return
. This
includes records of:

- all money spent by the company, for example receipts, petty cash
books, orders and delivery notes
- all money received by the company, for example invoices, contracts,
sales books and till rolls
- any other relevant documents, for example bank statements and
correspondence

 Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed response, which is very helpful.I've tried updating
the Finance::Quote as you suggested, but it appears that some prerequisites are
missing, so I need to investigate how to install those, and will try again
tomorrow if I have time. I've downloaded the latest version of Perl, and
feeling my way with this.
You're right when you say that I ought to upgrade GC to the latest version, and
I would normally have done that routinely through the versions, but I
experienced substantial interface changes when I upgraded from 2.6 to 3.5,
which took a significant amount of time and effort to resolve, so I've feared
further trauma with subsequent updates and resisted installing them while the
software has been working well. I will update as soon as I find the time to
deal with any undesirable consequences!

Re: [GNC] ANNOUNCE: IRC: irc.gnome.org Alias Changed

2022-11-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone

Thanks Derek,

As you could see in the channel, that helped.

I notice I had changed the Network Name but not the server.

I now have them both as 'irc.gimp.org' and I'm now in the right channel.

For anyone else seeing this, I got a bit confused with the various
aliases and the page on the Wiki.

The *server* name needs to be: irc.gimp.org

(in my particular client, that field is a drop down, which I didn't at
first realize I could type in my own choice.)

Regards,
Adrien

p.s. - the strange thing is that when both the Network & Server name
were set to irc.gnome.org, I was still in the right channel.(?!)

2022-11-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone

Hmm...

First, since you upgraded, if you didn't already do so, run:

Actions > Check & Repair > Check & Repair All

If something is off with the underlying data, it could be wrecking havoc
with report code as that seems to be the area at issue.

Run from the Terminal to see if there is any useful output, and also see
the Wiki about obtaining a TraceFile.

There may be some errors reported in either of those that could shed
light on what's going wrong.

John,

I'm a bit confused.

I originally had the network & server name set to irc.gnome.org.

I could see activity just fine.

I switched the network name to irc.gimp.org as advised, had to
re-register my nick, and now the channel is quiet.

Am I missing something?

Now I see warlord is advising that's the wrong server/channel, to switch
to irc.gimp.org, which is exactly what I did and what my client log
reports I'm connected to. (but when it first signs on, it tells me I'm

Where are my wires crossing?

 Hi Martin,
Thank you for your very helpful response.
I can confirm that I have a free Alpha Vantage API key setup in Preferences,
which I assume is valid because when I tried to obtain a new one, (just in case
that was the problem), Alpha Vantage confirmed that I already have one.
I'm using OS Windows 10 and GnuCash version 3.5.I haven't been aware of a
Finance::Quote version, and didn't know where to look for it, but I've just
discovered that it's 1.47 and presumably the problem, as you've indicated. Is
that something I can update separately, or will I have to update to the current
GC version?
The online quotes have previously been set to retrieve from Alphavantage, US,
which worked without any hitches until early November (my last successful
download was 4 November), so I guess that's around the time the rules changed.
I've tried changing to Yahoo as JSON, but without success.

Alphavantage is now the default, and you have to get a free ID to use the
service (there is information regarding how to acquire an ID).

Be aware, though -- Alphavantage adds a one-minute delay for each set of
five stocks you update. (That is, five stocks will take seconds, but six
stocks will take over a minute).

I changed to what David suggested for my stock updates. I would prefer to
have Multiple, but not use Alphavantage, but that doesn't seem to be an
option at present.

I believe that AlphaVantage is the "default" simply because it is
alphabetically first in the list. And it is included because it is still
possible for users to use it, albeit with significant restrictions (that have
been imposed after the original implementation).

It is not wise to read significance into these circumstances.

All the little stuff together IF you are doing this (your

Thank you. With this I was able to add a command to the Tools

This is indeed interesting... I'd previously experimented with a repl
server[1], using nc to connect. Yours is much more elegant. Would you care
to add to the wiki?

With yours, one can launch via Tools > Scheme REPL, then (use-modules

Can the same strategy also be used to add items to the popup menu?

I'm mostly asking if I should look harder or if it is not possible
because there are no Scheme bindings for the popup menu. Similarly, is
there a Scheme binding for
gnc_plugin_page_account_tree_get_current_account?

I don't think there is.

It's interesting to note that Alpha Vantage is still recommended to GnuCash
users and is available to some, as it stopped working for me a few weeks ago.
When I contacted the Alpha Vantage Team, I was told that I needed to contribute
to the premium plan, at a minimum cost of 49.99 USD per month, despite the fact
that I've only been using the service once per week to retrieve 5 stock price
updates. How are others still able to use the service free of charge?
I'm based in the UK, so I'd be interested to know how other UK users obtain
updates to their stock prices.
