[GNC] Reconciling PayPal
Someone mentioned reconciling their PayPal account. Is there a way to do this for anything other than the last transaction? I don’t seem to be able to display a balance at any point in the past. So if I wanted to know the balance on the first of July, I don’t see a way of finding it. I am trying to enter transactions from the start of my financial year, but I can’t find a way of finding the balance at any particular moment in time. I was looking yesterday and were baffled by transaction that involved buying postage through eBay with PayPal. Purchase postage @ £0.48 another transaction with a similar implication, but for -£0.48. But it doesn’t appear to be a refund. £0.48 was withdrawn from my bank account. I *think* what the account is showing is that the £0.48 was paid for postage, then £0.45 was withdrawn by eBay (not me). But overall I find following what is actually happening in the PayPal account is very difficult, and unless I am mistaken, reconciling would be a very painful experience. I can not really see how the reconcile tool in GnuCash would help much. Does anyone know of a way of getting the balance in the account at a certain time in the past? Does anyone find the reconcile tool in GunCash helpful with PayPal? However, despite being in the UK, I have some customers who want to pay in Euros or USD, despite I make it clear I charge more. When USD arrives in my account, it makes little sense to pay currency conversion fees to convert to GBP, then later buy something in USD, paying more currency conversion fees. So if I don’t need the money, there are financial advantages to holding USD and Euros, rather than converting to GBP. My accountant told me to treat PayPal as an asset, which was my original reason for doing so. [GNC] QFX Import fails into a specific account, crashes. Same import works in other accounts
I have a Chase credit card account. I used to be able to import QFX file no problem, but the last time I tried, it crashed gnucash. I thought there must be something wrong with the file and waded through it, comparing it to files that worked for other accounts. I couldn't find anything in the file that seemed wrong. I eventually tried an import that had worked for another account on that Chase account. It, too, crashed gnucash. So, I tried the one that was meant for chase on other accounts, and it worked fine. I eventually took a QFX file and stripped it down to just one transaction to import. That file works fine on all accounts I tried except for the chase account. So, something about that account, transactions, splits, etc. is bad. Of course, to try it on other accounts, I had to delete the online mapping. So the failure is, select import => OFX/QFX, select file name, select account to import into, crash. I tried the check and repair. I tried creating a new account, and it seemed to work. So I thought maybe if I delete the bad account and move all its transactions to the new account that maybe moving them would fix the issue. It didn't. Now the new account fails. I'm guessing there is some mismatch between accounts, splits and transactions. I did try exporting all the transactions from the chase account and importing them into a new account that does seem to fix it and I suppose I should just do that but having spent a lot of time with databases, I'm curious what's wrong with the data. I tried creating a copy and moving it into sqlite so I could more easily look at the data, but so far haven't found much. I included the crash report below. I see nothing in the logs. Ah; if you're going to hold money in the PayPal account, I think it would be an asset account, from which you transfer money from the bank to Paypal whenever, and then you reduce money when you purchase something via Paypal. Let's just imagine that you have just found the error, that the reimbursement is in the wrong account in your books. Maybe you found it when the bank account reconciliation was incorrect. At this point Did you add the transaction to the bank account in Gnucash? Go to your Expenses:Travel account. Is that reimbursement recorded once or twice there? You would expect to have one entry, linked to the bank account. It should decrease your expenses. If you have two entries, delete the one linked to the credit card. If you have one entry, and it is linked to the credit card, edit it to be linked to the bank account. Of course, any of us would have already noticed an extra thousand dollars in a bank account and tried to find the reason. ;) Liz ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: [GNC] Can someone confirm if this split transaction is correct?
Dec 12, 2022 14:39:13 Dr. David Kirkby : So at one point your PayPal account has the full amount, then you split that, so the fees are removed? When you process payment, you'll get a transaction like: Debit Paypal: 906 Credit A/R: 906 Edit that transaction by subtracting the fee from the amount debited to PayPal and make a debit to Fees. The transaction should then look something like: Debit Paypal: 867.74 Debit Fees: 38.26 Credit A/R: 906 Mark ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Orith Something that may save you a bit of work. It will depend upon what failed on your old computer. If it was not a hard disk failure, it may be possible to mount the hard drive from your old computer on your new computer. A computer repair service can help you remove and test the old hard drive if you do not know how to do this. They may even be able to just copy the data files (you will likely have more than just your GnuCash file you want to recover) to a USB stick so you can transfer it to the new computer. Most good computer retailers will have a kit which can power a hard drive from mains AC and provide a USB interface you can use to connect to your new computer(In Australia AU$40-80), particularly if it is a laptop. I have one of these which will work with almost all types of drive for testing hard drives) If your new computer is a dektop and has a spare mount position for a hard disk, you might be able to just plug it in. Take your old hard drive to the computer store so they can give you the right kit for your hard drive. Your new computer should then be able mount the old hard drive when you plug it in powered up, and you can navigate to it in Explorer, copy the old data file from the old hard disk to your new computer's hard disk. Then use File->Open to open the copy on the new computer's disk and you should be operational. If the hard drive failed, then it is unlikely the data can be recovered although there are services which can do this in some circumstances. We aren't going to be able to help much while fundamental concepts are misunderstood because that would affect the meaning of terms. a) In double entry bookkeeping the SIMPLEST form of transaction affects TWO accounts, one for the debit side and one for the credit side. We do NOT call such a transaction a "split". b) However a transaction can affect more than two accounts, can have more than one account being debited or more than one being credited or more than one on both sides.THAT is what is being called a "split". In other words, any transaction affecting three or more accounts is a split transaction/ It isn't really meaningful to talk about "how many splits" . The only way I would differentiate would be between "one way" and "two way. A one way split has only one debit or one credit with the other side having multiple accounts. A two way split has more than one debit and more than one credit. Using gnucash, we are starting in one of the affected ledger accounts and from there hitting "split. Doe a one way split it will be MUCH easier to enter if that account is the side that has just one account (the unsplit side) c) When you hit the "split" button you are asking for "journal mode". That is how we who did bookkeeping in the old days had to enter ALL transactions, even the simple ones with just two accounts affected, After completion of the journal entry it would get "posted" to the ledger, putting each line of that journal entry into the affected ledger account << BTW, this was an error prone process, easy to get a digit wrong or misplaced >> Gnucash automates the posting when you hit ":enter" for the transaction, Gnucash also lets you skip/shortcut the journal entry step for simple transactions affecting just two accounts. NOTE -- gnucash can show you the journal as a report. This is all transactions in date order. But in terms of how we normally use gnucash, think of it as having a virtual journal as opposed to a file. Re: [GNC] accounts list
Hi, What happens if you run Actions -> New Account Hierarchy ?? Although this begs the question: why can't you File -> Export -> Export Accounts and re-use your existing Account Hierarchy? Why rebuild it from scratch? Which begs the next question: Why restart at all? GnuCash has no requirement for you to restart the data file, and will happily keep going. You can archive each year to refer back (or for posterity). But I'm curious why you go through the tremendous effort to restart every year? -derek On Mon, December 12, 2022 3:10 pm, David Carlson wrote: > Orinth, > > I am assuming that you are using a computer that has a Windows 10 or 11 > operating system. Re: [GNC] accounts list
Orinth, I am assuming that you are using a computer that has a Windows 10 or 11 operating system. GnuCash works somewhat like Word or LibreOffice. You create one data file. You need to save it with a unique name in a subfolder under your user data folder. It will have all the accounts that the GnuCash setup assistant provides when you select the best account tree for your use. Then you may add some accounts and/or rename some. Save it again. Now you can quit GnuCash and the next time you start GnuCash it will open that same data file. In Linux it works in a similar way, but on a Mac it is a little different, but someone else can describe the difference. Re: [GNC] Installing or updating Finance::Quote
UPDATE With thanks to those who advised me on this problem, I've finally managed to install the latest version of Finance::Quote and get it working. It wasn't as straightforward as I'd expected, and I ended up reinstalling Perl a couple of times in case that was the problem, but it turns out that the Start menu item “Install Online Price Retrieval for Gnucash” proved unreliable, as did the use of cmd command 'gnc-fq-update', and after several unsuccessful attempts, I searched the internet and found a very useful step-by-step guide that helped me achieve a successful outcome. In case anyone else faces similar problems with installing Finance::Quote, this is how I did it: Following additional guidance from https://learn.perl.org/installing/windows.html, I carried out the following steps: Uninstall old version of Strawberry PerlDownload and install the latest version of Strawberry Perl.Install App::cpanminus by typing 'cpan App::cpanminus' into cmd Install Finance::Quote by typing 'cpanm Finance::Quote' into cmd I rebooted the computer between each stage, just in case that helped, and GnuCash now shows the latest version of Finance::Quote and downloads stock prices as it used to. Re: [GNC] Reconciling credit card
Another possibility? In March 2021 I was reimbursed 1,340.98 by an airline for a trip to Japan which was cancelled due to Covid. In error I entered the reimbursement against my credit card, although I had paid it from my bank. That would account for the 'credit' on the credit card? Re: [GNC] Overflow menus in invoices/bills not working in latest release on MacOS Ventura
Not transitory. I don’t think the M1 chip should matter since it appears to be running under Rosetta. But Ventura brings in its own versions of various libraries. I rolled forward to get Xcode (for other work) but this appears to have been a side effect. Not generally a problem except when using invoices and bills. In those cases the tool bar is so full I need to stretch the window to nearly covered the screen in order to get the post and pay icons. Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 10, 2022, at 7:43 AM, R. File -> Open (or Ctrl-O) should let you get your "GC data" back open and working within the "GC program", once you have put the relevant file onto your new computer... You *may* be slightly confused because GC normally automatically re-opens the last data file that it was working on, so it is not always obvious that you actually have a data file...but you do! Re: [GNC] Reconciling credit card
On the contrary, the preference I mentioned could very well show a negative balance and this would be proper. (not contra) Try toggling the preference yourself with a Liability account open and you'll see the balance change from negative to positive. The question is what does the user prefer to see? (negative means you owe, or negative means the balance is contra) Once it is settled as to which setting is in place, *then* we can advise where maybe things went wrong if the balance still doesn't look right. It's not your preferences (unless you want to switch to formal accounting labels, which won't change anything relevant). Your credit-card account is showing a substantial negative balance. That is, you (appear to) have made a substantial overpayment to the provider. Any time you make a purchase you reduce this overpayment, and any time you make a payment you increase it (make it more negative). OK, I had forgotten you cannot attach images as pics. I did check the a/c and afaics, I didn't pay the CC 1000 extra, I'll check again or adjust the preferences, or something. (setting in your mail client) Credit accounts normally have a negative balance. If you want to see them as positive change the setting in Preferences > Accounts > Reversed balanced accounts to "Credit accounts". If that is already set, and you see a negative balance for *any* account, then that account currently has a 'contra-balance', that is, a balance opposite of its normal state. In this case, it would indicate an over-payment to the card company.
