We don't know, we haven't heard anything from Linas. Based on some trace route
probing it looks like it might be an upstream network problem at Grande

Here in the US, I have been told I should be able to support any tax filing
for seven years, OR indefinitely, if I have been notified that a particular
year's filing is in question. SO I keep a paper copy of everything I've
submitted, and electronic versions of my supporting information archived
for convenience. I submit PDFs of the Income Statement and a Transaction
Report showing the relevant asset accounts to my tax preparer, and save
them indefinitely in case of an audit (which so far hasn't occurred).

books.

Is this 'a bug' or have I done something to my tree of accounts?

Ignoring the immediate cause that has been pointed out, there is a
misunderstanding of what "net income" (or loss) on a P mean relative
to "retained earnings" on a Balance Sheet. By which I mean OVER TIME and
assuming that most users of gnucash will NOT be doing a "close the
books: operation.

Net Earnings (or loss) on a P are fro the period of the P (a P is
always for some date interval)

Retained Earnings on the Balance Sheet (always as of some specific date)
is the net going back to when the books were opened (or reopened
following a "close the books"

In other words, if you started with gnucash at the start of 2021 and you
ran a P for that year and a Balance Sheet as of year end of 2021 you
would expect net income (for 2021) and "retained earnings" to match.
Then at the end of 2022 you again run a P for 2022 and a Balance Sheet
for year end you will again have a "net income" (or loss) for 2022 and
this will NOT match "retained earnings" << which will be the sum of the
earnings retained in 2021 and 2022.

If you DO a "close the books" this will not happen. At the end of a
"close the books" all the temporary accounts of type income and expense
will be zero and their net (the profit or loss) included in equity and
so no longer "retained".

You might check to see that the accounts being pulled into those reports are
complete. I have found that those numbers don't match when the list of accounts
on the Balance Sheet report doesn't match the list of accounts on the P
(possibly because some are hidden accounts with balances).

What document type is that attachment?  If it isn't something my computer
can scan for viruses, I won't open it.

Now, if you started a new file with the same account tree, it won't have
any transactions, so those reports will be different, in fact, IIRC, net
income should be zero and retained earnings whatever you set  the opening
balance to when you set up the new books.

So when I need the data for the accountant I make the reports for the

Each of my saved report configurations contain financial year dates,

* That CD-R has lots of other data for the financial year and a copy of

I create directories (file folders) to hold them with suitable names

export it to this folder using a suitable file name that clearly
