Re: [GNC] defining key strokes

2023-04-10 Thread Larry Baldwin
As I understand the GUID token is for windows, as I am working from a Mac this
will not work in my case.

I created a javascript to run from the Mac Shortcuts App as a Quick Action and
it performs as required when run within the Shortcuts App, but will not run
from the hotkey I setup for this Shortcut.

Confirmed all the Privacy and Security settings are correct, not sure why the
hotkey fails, off to a search for possible solution.

thanks for your help.

Re: [GNC] How to import PayPal transactions in to GC

2023-04-10 Thread Keld Sorensen
It appears that you are receiving money that is originating by Credit Card,
i.e. somebody sends you money using a CC.

This means that the person paying you paid $100 of which you receive 100
minus the transaction fee of 2.34

The $2.34 needs to be assigned to an account that you can call "CreditCard
Transaction fees" or some other name that you like. You set it up is an
expense account.

As others have mentioned, you should read up on the rules of double entry
bookkeeping. If GnuCash cannot identify the proper account, it puts it in
the account call "Unbalanced" - this account should BTW always be ZERO
Anything in "unbalanced" is a mistake somewhere.

Re: [GNC] How to import PayPal transactions in to GC

2023-04-10 Thread David Carlson
If you make the effort to match the correct accounts to the transactions
while importing them, GnuCash tries to "learn" from that history and try to
do better next time. Unfortunately, with some banks, they don't provide
good descriptions and results are sometimes disappointing.

I not sure where PayPal falls in that spectrum, but I know that my bank's
electronic payments are very poorly described in their imports, so I need
to do a lot editing.

Good luck.

Re: [GNC] How to import PayPal transactions in to GC

2023-04-10 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

On match transactions I then get a lot of errors about new, unbalanced
need acct to transfer.

Example:
Date 6/4/2023
Amount 2.34
Description: Sale 001

Comments: New, UNBALANCED (need acct to transfer -2.34)

What is this error all about? I have to right click on and select a
transfer account for all of the transactions. Does this have to be
done every time for each transaction?

On the import I chose Account = Assets:Current Assets:PayPal, so am a
bit confused what transfer account it's referring to.

New to GC, so don't fully understand all the concepts.

No, the problem isn't so much being new to gnucash but new to double
entry bookkeeping. I'm going to use the formal terms, because the
supposedly "user friendly" ones depend on account(and so not so friendly
if we are talking about all account).

EVERY transaction will have at least TWO accounts associated with it, at
least one debit and one credit (left side, right side). If you don't
inform gnucash (or any other bookkeeping app) what the accounts are, how
can it know.

OK, your transaction. ONE side is PayPal (the PayPal account in your
ledger). Was the money going into PayPal (debit) or coming out of PayPal
(credit). In the first case, from what account was the money coming? In
the other case, where was it going? For example, if that transaction
were money coming from PayPal and going into your bank account the the
bank account would be the account debited and the PayPal account the one
credited. Remember, you could have six bank accounts. How could gnucash
know which was the right one unless you provided that information.

Re: [GNC] How to import PayPal transactions in to GC

2023-04-10 Thread David H
Welcome to Gnucash and double entry accounting. Basically every txn has at
least 2 splits, plus and minus that must sum to zero, i.e. +$2.34 and
-$2.34 = $0.00. Paypal via your import has provided only 1 split for each
txn and you have to tell the importer what the other side of the entry is -
possibly Income : Sales : Paypal or some such? I don't use the importers
but I understand if you make this association within the importer it learns
as you go and will automagically match the other side of the txn account in
future.

Since you're new to Gnucash and don't seem to understand what double entry
accounting is you should read the tutorial on entering basic txns to get a
better understanding of what's going on.

Cheers David H.

[GNC] How to import PayPal transactions in to GC

2023-04-10 Thread Greg McCarthy
I'm new to GC and have been playing around with it for a few hours and
ready to start importing.

I have created an account called Assets:Current Assets:PayPal which has
a opening balance of 100.00

Logged into PayPal and exported my transactions to a CSV file

Then on GC import transactions from CSV

Select Account = Assets:Current Assets:PayPal

Date = Date

Deposit = Net

Description = Subject

Does this have to be done
every time for each transaction?

On the import I chose Account = Assets:Current Assets:PayPal, so am a
bit confused what transfer account it's referring to.

suggestion. I just tried it, and it works just as I needed.

P.S.: I don't know when the right-click option "Inspect Element" appeared

customizations. Unfortunately while playing with it my display manager
crashed, but that might be a Wayland thing.

Re: [GNC] set up Gnucash on a new device

2023-04-10 Thread David H
Christopher,

Just a bit of Gnucash mailing list etiquette - please use reply all to keep
everything on the mailing list so anyone following this thread is across
everything :-)

As you'll see at the bottom of your properties screenshot that you sent me
you have a security warning - typically when I see these and I trust the
file in question I would check the Unblock checkbox and then ok on the
popup and then double click the file to try again. Not sure if this is
part of the issue or not. I have a vague recollection that when I
originally installed on Win 11 (it was a awhile ago now) I got the same
sort of error but clicking on "No" on the store prompt and trying again
allowed it to install - but not sure on that anymore.

Glad you got it working anyway.

Cheers David H.

2023-04-10 Thread Tommy Trussell
Hi! Please remember to copy the GnuCash List on all replies. Thanks for
your version information.

Since you're using an older version, you might try a more recent version.
Version 5.0 is available, as well as the last of the 4.x versions, 4.14. If
you want to be completely cautious you might try upgrading to 4.14 first
and plan to upgrade to the newer version later.

I had not seen that option before! Thank you. It did seem to help! I told
it to copy the margins from my printer (0.17 inches on all four sides) and
it worked. I then tried changing them to 0.25 inches, and that worked, too.

But what a pain to select the Custom Size! It looks like I have to do it
with every printing, which means scrolling down beyond several dozen paper
sizes on this machine. (I suspect the sizes may have been copied from a
Brother printer driver).

The original sizes for Letter Size were as follows
Paper Size
  Width: 8.50 inch
  Height: 11.00 inch
Paper Margins
  Top: 0.25 inch
  Bottom: 0.56 inch
  Left: 0.25 inch
  Right 0.25 inch

As I said, when I copied the margins from the printer it changed Top,
Bottom, Left and Right to 0.17 inches, which worked. Changing them all to
0.25 inches worked, too.

One thing I had not noticed before is this only affects Transaction Reports
that are three or more pages long. So I'm updating the bug report.

At some point I'll try to figure out how to update the default page sizes.
It's probably buried deep in a CUPS option or printer definition file
somewhere.

That's only on Windows. Ze'ev said they're using macOS. The menu item is
present on macOS and works as expected.

I just tested setting
   (gtk_accel_path "/gnc-plugin-ofx-actions/OfxImportAction" "i")
in ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/Gnucash/accelerator-map and restarting GnuCash.
That also works as expected, bringing up the file chooser to select files to
import. Ze'ev, did you restart GnuCash after editing accelerator-map?

Do note, though, that using -prefixed accelerators on macOS overrides the
extended keyboard so having i as an accelerator means that you can't type
circumflex-accented letters, e.g. ô, in GnuCash. You might prefer
or to avoid that limitation. Meta is the command key; primary is
the command key on macOS and the control key on Linux and Windows.

Are you able to choose

Help --> About

in GnuCash? That will show you the version you are using.

As for not being able to choose any of the report options, I have not seen
that happen, so I cannot advise.

If you suspect the download might have been glitchy, you might try
downloading GnuCash again. As long as you've saved your data file you won't
lose any of your entries. Be sure to get an official stable release version
for your operating system as linked from www,gnucash.org and install it as
you normally would (copy and run it from the Applications folder, if I
recall, though it's been years since I've used a Mac).

Along with this I am thinking about using an environment variable

Just to be sure, I changed I to Z, and when I tried that key
combination nothing happened. It looks like OFXimportAction does nothing. I
also did a search on AQBanking, as that is where I do my manual import, and
while many instances came up, none of them seemed to be connected to OFX files.

You need to edit the file C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\accelerator-map

go to the QIFImportAction line

Remove the semi colon before the line

Add the key stroke in quotes as below

 (gtk_accel_path "/gnc-plugin-qif-import-actions/QIFImportAction"
"l")

restart GNUCash and you should see the key binding

Is there a wiki page or help page explaining how to define keystrokes? I used
to use ctrl-I to import QFX/OFX files, but that's not working in the current
release (5.0) and I can't find the original page I used to set that up!
Windows 11.

You need to edit the file C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\accelerator-map

go to the QIFImportAction line

Remove the semi colon before the line

Add the key stroke in quotes as below

Re: [GNC] set up Gnucash on a new device

2023-04-10 Thread Christopher Smallman via gnucash-user
Hi everyone and thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I thought that I
would try to download V 5 to my desktop and it worked perfectly. I then copied
the download file to a flash drive & used it to open V 5 on my new laptop. Also
worked perfectly & I am up to date.
The problem appears to be with the version of windows 11 on the new laptop
although all other downloads have opened without a problem.
If any one comes across a solution to the Windows glitch / GnuCash I would
appreciate a note.
Many thanks again

Re: [GNC] set up Gnucash on a new device

2023-04-10 Thread Paul Kroitor
From the web I see that this was a known issue with Windows 10 in the past,
apparently caused by the file association for .exe files being corrupted, but I
don't see reports anywhere for Windows 11. If this was the case, it would
presumably happen with other .exe files as well.

Some places suggest resetting all file associations to their defaults, which
you could try (but you'd have to recustomize any you had modified). There are
some registry fixes (.reg files) floating around to "fix this" but I would take
that with a boatload of salt unless you were sure the source was reliable.

The file shows "Application" in the Type column, which is exactly what you
would expect from an .exe file if Hide Extensions was on. Thus that aspect
seems fine to me.

It looks to me more like Windows 11 is further tightening the control of
unsigned executables. Perhaps there's a Windows Setting somewhere that now
defaults to the behaviour you're getting, or the manufacturer / local GPO /
domain GPO set it to this.

There can be a secondary data stream in downloaded Windows executables that is
used to distinguish between trusted and untrusted files. See
https://www.howtogeek.com/70012/what-causes-the-file-downloaded-from-the-internet-warning-and-how-can-i-easily-remove-it/
. In the past this issue has simply caused a warning, but they are tightening
this up in Win 11.

Failing that, perhaps somehow the executable is really damaged?

Paul

Good point, I forgot about that.

However, the machine is acting as if it doesn't recognize the extension:
".setup".

Hopefully Christopher can shed some light on it.

Thanks Michael I have sent a reply to David H. The properties show an .exe

Re: [GNC] defining key strokes

2023-04-10 Thread Jon Schewe
Both MacOS and Windows are case-preserving, case-insensitive
filesystems. This means that when you create a file or directory, the
case (upper or lower) of each character is preserved in the name.
However when looking for a file or directory the case doesn't matter
"GnuCash" and "Gnucash" are equivalent. One can create a case-sensitive
filesystem on MacOs if desired, although the system volume should still
be case-insensitive as there are many applications that assume the
filesystem is case-insensitive. Linux has a case-sensitive filesystem
which allows one to have a /home/user/GnuCash and /home/user/Gnucash as
2 different directories.

Re: [GNC] set up Gnucash on a new device

Hello Christopher - I don't think it's an executable. Windows is trying to
find the program to open it with and can't find it in the store. I'd
re-download it from the official store and turn on extension visibility per
David H.'s comment and try again.
