Re: [GNC] Unable to enter data in "Description" field of a Transaction

My manjaro doesn't have traceroute.

I tried 'ping' ... it did one line then stalled.  So, the problem must
be on my end ... i just have no way to know what / how and you guys have
far more important things to do then to help me troubleshoot my computer.

THANK YOU for trying!!!

[GNC] Finance::Quote Usage

2023-07-29 Thread Bruce Schuck

Hello all,

Just an FYI. Getting a simple count of the Finance::Quote sources used.
At least for those with v1.57 installed. I'd like to keep the counter in
place for maybe another release, but will be removed by release v1.59.

As noted in the discussion post, the ukfunds number is misleading. Early
on I discovered that a single IP was using that method on somewhat of an
hourly schedule resulting in hundreds of times a day.

The list can also be found on this post in F::Q discussions:

This could be a big problem in that you might think you've entered

Does the title bar of your GnuCash window have a similar looking file
name? You'll need to clean that up. If so, report back that fact and
folks here can suggest some remedies.

Second, the Save function could be triggered by an auto-save
preference. If you are using the default XML backend, you can set the
file to save every certain number of minutes. If you didn't
intentionally save the file under one of the SQL backends, (and you'd
know) then you are using the default.

Otherwise, usually a CTRL+S (CMD+S on a Mac) will trigger a Save.

As for why you can't save, if you need to, the message suggests lack
of space on the drive, or a permissions issue. We don't yet have
enough information to determine which one.

Re: [GNC] Cannot write to file

2023-07-29 Thread Mahon Finbar via gnucash-user
Yes, I have files with a "similar looking" file names, but the suffixes
are  .log and .ode (the suffix of my libre office text documents).

I tried 'tidying up' I deleted all the files with recent dates (assuming
they are being entered as the bank a/c entries) but the same result  -

appears and says what it says, and I cannot move on. The save and down
arrow are 'live' but it produces the same message.

The original bank a/c file has no new entries, but when I try entering a
few and 'saving' them the same message as above appears.

I haven't been able to locate the auto-save preference, I'm pretty sure
I have an auto-save set, but where is it?

Thank you so much for the help so far.

First, those long file names with numbers in them suggest at some

This could be a big problem in that you might think you've entered
transactions and then find them missing.

Bernard,

Cool, glad I can help. Your issue did expose a minor issue in the
AlphaVantage module. It was not properly catching the message returned
when the daily limit has been reached. I did address that and the fix
will be included in the next release.

If you would like to test a pre-release while you are still having the
issue, please try installing BPSCHUCK/Finance-Quote-1.57_03.tar.gz from
CPAN.

I'll have to give it another try tomorrow (the flow has been up and
running overnight) and see if all is back to normal.

Good luck, looking forward to the result.

Recently, I've been having a problem entering Descriptions for my
transactions.

At first, I could only enter 3 characters, then it would lock up.

Now I can only enter 1.

All other fields seem to be working just fine. The only field I'm
having difficulties with is the Description.

I'm using Manjaro an Arch Linux based operating system. The version in
the official repository is 5.3-1.

I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling with no success.

I have spent a great deal of time searching for a way to fix this issue,
but have not even seen someone else having the same issue.

Sorry, indeed, I missed that.

Consider stepping back to 4.14 in that case.

But also consider filing a bug report for sure so it can be addressed.

My issue is that, yes, I can retreat and go back, but it still freezes
after adding 1 character.  I have to retreat and go back for nearly ever
single character in my description ... REALLY annoying!!

There's something a bit odd about how GnuCash handles text entry in
all fields. I think it's due to the way it auto-fills the field when
you enter just one or two characters.

On my system most of the issues occur with the Transfer column, it
sometimes locks up in the same way that you're describing for the
Description field.

I have the same problem, but so far, only when entering 'tes' for 'Tesco',
when it just freezes.
I wait a few seconds then click in the line above, then back to the
original and it
works.

Yes, that's a good description of what happens. One can usually
'retreat' and try again and make it work but it's still rather
annoying.

Re: [GNC] Issue with Finance::Quote

2023-07-29 Thread bern...@deprez.biz

Hi Bruce,

I wasn't aware of the IP tracking and that may be the explanation -
without my knowledge, somebody else in my household was playing around
with a Node-RED flow that was pulling a request from Alphavantage each
minute with a third API key :-)  We've now tuned that flow back to once
every 4 hours (which is totally adequate for our use case)

I'll have to give it another try tomorrow (the flow has been up and
running overnight) and see if all is back to normal.

I'm super thankful for your help & mentioning the below!!!
B.

rate limits."

}

The interesting part is that the original API key I have was used
perhaps 15 times today, the second API key mentioned above wasn't
used today at all... And I have no automation nor CRON/scheduled
tasks anywhere that use either API...

Bernard,

Are you connecting from home, work, or through something like NordVPN?

I found out while doing a PoC of using a different key for each
request to avoid needing to throttle requests (I stumbled onto the
fact that almost any random string will work as an API key) that their
limitation is also likely based on source IP. After 5 requests using 5
different generated random API keys, the 6th request with a different
API within a minute will get the message about the 5 per minute
limitation.

If you are on a network where multiple people happen to be using
AlphaVantage, this could be the cause of the AlphaVantage limit message.

That said, please open an issue at
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/issues. I identified
where the AlphaVantage module may not be catching this particular
failure, since I suspected it may be that you have surpassed a
daily/monthly limit and was looking into it.

Thank you.

Bruce.

Re: [GNC] Cannot write to file

2023-07-29 Thread Adrien Monteleone
First, those long file names with numbers in them suggest at some point
you've opened a backup file and then worked in it rather than your main
file.

This could be a big problem in that you might think you've entered
transactions and then find them missing.

Does the title bar of your GnuCash window have a similar looking file
name? You'll need to clean that up. If so, report back that fact and
folks here can suggest some remedies.

Second, the Save function could be triggered by an auto-save preference.
If you are using the default XML backend, you can set the file to save
every certain number of minutes. If you didn't intentionally save the
file under one of the SQL backends, (and you'd know) then you are using
the default.

Otherwise, usually a CTRL+S (CMD+S on a Mac) will trigger a Save.

As for why you can't save, if you need to, the message suggests lack of
space on the drive, or a permissions issue. We don't yet have enough
information to determine which one.

Adrien
