Thanks Glen, yup, removed TXT as this also appeared when first editing
settings.ini file.

It is still a text file tho', as opposed to a configuration file (settings.ini)

That link is useful, i'll try a few examples and go from there rather not take
up anymore of folks time.

Appreciate the help.

Hi David,

Even though it's a txt file make sure you save it as gtk-3.0.css not
gtk-3.0.css.txt

Use this syntax instead of the one you posted:

* {
   font: 24px arial;
}

Here is an example css with other things that you might want to change:

https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/blob/maint/doc/gtk-3.0.css

David,

Until you create gtk-3.0.css, it's not going to exist.

Use Notepad, copy and paste what I sent (maybe use "24px" as a test), and Save
it as:

C:\Users\david\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\gtk-3.0.css

Then start gnucash and see if things are changed.

Followed the wiki instructions, although no need to create a file as
settings.ini already exists as shown. What does not exist (at least on my
laptop) is:

GTK_CONFIG_HOME/settings.ini:

Or this path posted by D below

C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash

This is the only path to GNUCash files

C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash (isnt this for older 32 bit programmes x86?)

No other apps use GTK unless Thunderbird but that font is changed through css
style sheet from within the program itself.

It seems from https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3 that you can use settings.ini
for ALL GTK apps installed or the gtk-3.0.css to affectGnuCash only...
Settings.ini seems to use the gtk-font-= format.

Cheers David H.

Typefaces

There are two ways of setting a default font and size for GnuCash.

The first sets an option in GTK's settings.ini for all GTK applications (GIMP
etc.),
the other uses css to accomplish the same for GnuCash only.

  * If neither you nor a program changed the default values before, the files
mentioned in this section will not exist. In this case just create them as pure
text files and with normal file access rights.

The examples below with both set the default font to Arial and font size to 14.

Via settings.ini

Create if necessary and add the following line to
GTK_CONFIG_HOME<https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#GTK_CONFIG_HOME>/settings.ini:

[Settings]
gtk-font-name=Arial 14

General notes

  * In settings.ini, lines beginning with a # and blank lines are considered
comments.
  * If the file exists and has a [Settings] line just add the font line
beneath it.
  * Setting font family via settings.ini doesn't work on macOS and Microsoft
Windows. Use CSS to set font family on those operating systems.

Via css

Create if necessary and add the following to
GNC_CONFIG_HOME<https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#GNC_CONFIG_HOME>/gtk-3.0.css:

* {
  font: 14pt arial, sans-serif;
}

Probably not, depends what you set GNC_DATA_HOME to I guess - check that wiki

GnuCash uses GTK for its graphical user interface; thus, locations that are
used by GTK are also relevant. Note the base directories on Windows and macOS

David,

This is my thoughts also, using the basic 'checking account' selection
during account wizard creation keeps the parent accounts so no problem.

Thanks both for super swift replies.

[GNC] Creating new file and accounts

2021-02-19 Thread Jamestk
Hello good folks,

Having used GNC for many years the time has come to create a new data file
along with associated accounts. Before doing so i wanted to reacquaint
myself with the basic principals behind GNC operation, basically because i
would like to simplify my data entry.

Firstly, is it necessary to create accounts under each heading such as
'expense' 'credit card', 'bank account' and so on?

My thoughts are yes if you intend to run balance sheet or cash flow reports,
in my situation I export accounts individually into HTML then excel or
similar

My reasoning is to reduce the number of keystrokes or scrolling when
entering data, for example typing in a petrol receipt currently requires
expense:car:petrol to be selected in drop down, it would be far easier to
hit the shortcut key for petrol if petrol were a main and not sub account
(if that makes any sense?)

To summarise, my main objective using GNC is very basic double entry book
keeping to ensure cash ends up where it's sent and duplicate entries are not
made, for any report I use excel.

Thanks for reading

Re: [GNC] Gnucash files on a thumb drive?

2020-10-03 Thread Jamestk
Find the location of where your data file is stored then copy and paste,
pretty straightforward but your accountant will need a copy of GNU Cash to
view the files.

Another option is to export files as HTML via reports, from there you can
copy and paste into spreadsheets which is a bit more universal .

Re: [GNC] 8.1.1. Find Transaction

2020-10-03 Thread Jamestk
Geoff, I am with you, thanks for taking the time to post detailed info
(screenshot?)

That might save a bit of time as it can be done from the same window, that
said it's more or less the same process of having to go through menu options
rather than a floating box which you can just change the value amount,
example below for reply to Adrien's question:

Sometimes I don't have receipts to hand (may be at the office) when
reconciling say a credit account with statement, when this happens I put a
default description/category until I have these to hand.

There may be twenty or so receipts which need to update GNUC with payee
details, easiest way to retrieve is using search function ideally entering
amount 66.74, up pops transaction, change payee then back to floating box to
change just the amount, what happens at the moment is back accounts tree
(your suggestion may help here) then menu, edit> find, select value adding
in the amount

Hope all of that makes sense, cheers - David

Re: [GNC] 8.1.1. Find Transaction

2020-10-02 Thread Jamestk
Thanks David

Does the box remain after pressing enter ?

I think that's the key here for me as if results return nil (which is often
the case) then I can try again using perhaps description.

Tried on my Linux box which has two versions of GNC, 4.2 and 2.6.19 both
same as above, box closes preventing a second or edited search.

Tried that David although not sure what to put into second criteria, either
way it does the same as above.

I can't be the first person to spot this surely, since using GNC it's always
been the same so that must be nudging 7-8 years or more.

For good measure I tried all the options available from drop down list,
description, notes and so on can you try it when convenient - thanks

2020-10-02 Thread Jamestk
Thats sounds ideal Adrien but unsure how it works, let me describe what
happens.

>From the main accounts tree I clicked edit, find which brings up the
following window. From here I select 'value' as it works well finding
transactions, at this point these is no other option as greyed out.

<http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/file/t375078/GNUC_find.png>

Hitting enter it takes brings up the results, from this windows there
doesn't appear to be any other edit functions available?

can do is download the latest Windows exe from GNUCash website and go from
there.

Re: [GNC] GnuCash 4.2 Released

2020-09-30 Thread Jamestk
Its just the menu icon which has changed, the actual program when launching
reverts back to standard logo.

Clicking on about shows v4.2 flathub, checked the update manager but
couldn't see any obvious reference to GNUCash updates although it may have
been there under another abbreviated heading.

What's odd is there are two completely separate versions co-existing side by
side.

Thanks Liz,

I thought it was just me unable to use the functionality

"1. I can recall that from sometime in the past, but when I checked on
my later version the find box did close.

This is interesting, because there are options like "modify last
search" (not correct name) and they are meaningless when the box
disappears after an initial search"

[GNC] 8.1.1. Find Transaction

2020-09-26 Thread Jamestk
Hello good folks,

I wanted to check if there was a simpler way when using the 'find
transaction'feature repeatedly.

When searching for transactions it normally involves a batch of invoices or
receipts which are not showing withing reports, most often this is due to me
selecting incorrect accounts or similar, easy way is to use find feature -

Searches are basic, Select find from edit menu then opt for 'value' setting
leaving all other criteria std, often this works but if it returns nil
results you have to start over, is there anyway of saving the search or to
edit and re-run the original without having to start from scratch?

8.1 help file is okay but a bit technical in parts.

Thanks,

Thanks John, not important really, plenty of small workarounds but wanted to
check anyway.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks again,

For me, if I try to close the reconcile after ticking something it
says I have made changes in the reconcile window and asks me if I am
sure I want to cancel. If I say yes it cancels the whole reconcile.
Which version of Gnucash are you using?

*My reply: Mine is exact same, no difference - v3.4 Windows Pro 10 OS
*

OK, so you mean clicking Postpone exits the reconcile dialog, but if
you start the reconcile again then it has lost the previous ticks. I
wanted to be sure because when you said the button was non-functional
button you might have meant it didn't do anything at all.
In that case, since you have a consistent failure, I am sure the devs
will be interested in knowing that.

You haven't said which version you are using (if you already told us
earlier then apologies).

email chain or thread :) using Mac had similar issue here;

Re: [GNC] postpone reconciliation broken: ignores my changes

2019-02-09 Thread Jamestk

From memory, entries changed to 'c' if checked in reconcile window but
postponed, clicking finish would then change to 'Y' in register -

I just tried closing the reconcile window with entries ticked but not
finished, it closed but did ask to save before exiting - this doesn't seem
to have the same effect as finish.

Just a minor point doesn't it  change from 'c' or 'n' to 'y' in the R
column after 'finish' ?

I have had some issues with 'quit' - there have been times when I was
sure that I had done save/quit but the next time I fired up GNUCash it
said it could not find the file and did I want to open it anyway? Does
that happen if I haven't 'finished' the reconciliation?

Re: [GNC] postpone reconciliation broken: ignores my changes

2019-02-09 Thread Jamestk
Sorry, my poor wording - with the single transaction entries it writes back
to the main data file as saved, if you try to move onto the next task it
will ask, 'discard, save' - this process feels different to reconcile where
you have to hit the finish button in order to achieve similar result.

This if course is not the same as selecting save from top menu where it
saves the file to hard drive.

Perhaps users are ticking entries then using green reconcile button thinking
this will complete the process, only by selecting finish will it write back
to file.

Cheers,

Hello Colin, I click the green reconcile button for good measure, then the
postpone - close the reconciliation window, check register which shows
pending transactions marked with a 'c'.

On opening the reconcile window none of the entries are ticked, basically
starting over.

I think in v3.4 the postpone button has been changed to a menu item.

Re: [GNC] GNUCash becoming unusable ..v3.4

2019-02-02 Thread Jamestk
As a quick follow-up ran a couple of basic tests today to narrow down
performance issue.

Reconciled credit card account with roughly 40 or so monthly entries, hit
finish button - waited, then save - at the same time loaded Outlook (with 3
accounts) and Chrome, may be a tad slower if at all - GNC continued to work
in the background saving file without problem.

It looks like the internal file structure is too complex or possibly messed
up from before, if so it will become apparent when removing specific
accounts after exporting to csv.

Cheers,

That amount of memory you shouldn’t see any issues for sure. You may be on
to something with the stocks if there are many. A fresh start would
certainly confirm a performance bug or an issue with the data file.

>Diane Trefethen, your post made me smile.

I followed a similar path using Quicken/DOS even to the extent of owning a
HP LX200 (with back light). Then things took a turn, purchased a hugely
expensive Windows CE machine when MS first launched regretting ever since
the sale of my HP

There was a few years in between before I came across GNCash sometime around
v2.1, not sure. This was an easy transition back then with GNC using a
similar approach, with accounts v Quicken categories (I seem to remember
someone pulling me up quite sharply at the time "they are not categories,
they are accounts,lol"

Since then the problems have been few and far between and nothing dramatic,
its never crashed and no data has ever been lost. The support team are
helpful and try to accommodate where possible, that said I feel GNU is aimed
more at the Linux user base where tinkering is considered part and parcel of
the OS.

I suspect these issues are a lot less or not at all on Linux, this again
could be another option for me to switch over to Mint.

Re: [GNC] GNUCash becoming unusable ..v3.4

2019-02-01 Thread Jamestk
Adrien, answered a few points above.

The Python option looks good, and very worthwhile if I can overcome the
saving aspect too - it will only increase as time goes on so may as well
tackle it now.

I think the best option is to archive existing accounts by exporting to csv,
locking worksheet once checked then deleting GNC account.

When all accounts have been removed delete main file and start over, this
way it eliminates any inherent file problems that may exist (file has been
checked before).

Re-import only the most recent transactions to a new file.

Cheers,

---
I’ll second that the SQlite backend improves speed considerably. I’ve been
using it for a few years now.

Concerning reports, if you go the Python route, that isn’t ‘out of the box’
necessarily, but you don’t have to completely figure it out from scratch. Do
a search for PieCash. (might be spelled PyCash, not sure)

You could also query the db file directly if you prefer. (just don’t *write*
to it!!)

Before you go any further though, I’d ask:

What OS?
How much RAM?
Using an SSD? or Hard drive?

GnuCash loads the entire file into RAM no matter the backend. (the advantage
is instant write with SQlite3 vs. a slower periodic save with XML)

If you are running something heavy like Win10 on only 4GB RAM and you have a
data file that is 10years full of data, and if you also keep lots of GnuCash
tabs open (not to mention lots of other apps) then you are probably going to
see quite a bit of lag and sluggish behavior. And that is even discounting
the processor. If you’ve got a hobbled cache CPU like a Celeron or a
Pentium-M, you might see sluggish behavior. (note this last comment is just
general, not specific to GnuCash)

A dev could offer more accurate insights here as they know exactly how
GnuCash handles and manages memory and data.

I’ve run GnuCash over about 6 years on various Ubuntu versions (some on very
old and hobbled processors) with 4GB and MacOS with anywhere from 4-16GB.
I’ve never noticed any serious speed issues. I’ve never run GnuCash on any
Windows platform.

There are various threads concerning Win10 startup, reports being slow, and
some other performance issues. Check the archives as you may find some
resolutions or workarounds if that is your OS.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] GNUCash becoming unusable ..v3.4

2019-02-01 Thread Jamestk
Agreed, it does seem odd, one other thought relates to am intense period of
data entry associated with stocks. At the time this feature was under
development needing quite a lot of 'scrubbing' of lots, I ended up with
masses of entries which later became obsolete.

I am always reluctant to delete accounts in case there is a knock-on effect
somewhere else.

Computer spec is nothing fantastic, 32G RAM, Windows 10 Pro 64bit with
Samsung SSD, there's no paging to disk and given we are only talking about a
15mb file would be surprised if that happened.

A few years ago when starting out with GNC I ran both versions on
Linux/Windows, Linux was a lot smoother and quicker to load - that was in
the early days so no idea how it would perform now.

Cheers,

"Robert Kesterson">
How is your system memory? GnuCash loads all the data in memory (even if
you use the SQL backend) so it needs some room to breathe. I have easily
ten years of data in my file (and I categorize and track everything at a
level that few people would, so I have *lots* of splits), and I don’t
experience the slowness or scrolling issues that you mention. But then I
have 32 GB of memory. The problems you describe sound like what I would
expect of memory was low and the system was using swap space a lot.

Saving as SQlite drops the file size down to 10mb from 15mb, unfortunately no
noticeable difference with reports via GNC, I assume it needs Python
configuring to access DB directly.

Ideally it needs to be out of the box, otherwise likely to get in further in
to something that long term may not be suitable.

Thanks, there are other small issues creeping in which makes me think the
program is becoming unstable.

Example, when browsing the account tree menu the cursor hangs then jumps
after a delay to where you are pointing, this only happens when there is a
data file loaded.

When reconciling an account if auto save starts then it can really take an
age, i don't tend to time this as go and do something else in between.

I generally don't run full ledgers either but selected 'all accounts'' by
mistake while editing options.

My guess is the core code is designed for Linux, porting across to Windows
may not be ideal?

[GNC] GNUCash becoming unusable ..v3.4

2019-02-01 Thread Jamestk
*First of all thank you to all of the contributors, devs who have volunteered
to make GNUCash freely available. *

That said, I do need to ask if any improvements are likely on the speed
front. Basic reports take 1 - 2 minutes to run, larger ledger reports up to
15 minutes. I have tried all of the tweaks mentioned on here but with little
difference, if any.

Its always puzzled me how crunching numbers requires so much time and
resources, its more intensive than rendering images. Changing even the
report title takes the same amount of time, i.e no number crunching?

My set-up isn't complicated, yes accounts go back 10 years but that in
itself is not a large number of transactions overall.

Sorry to moan but I need to make a decision about what to do.

Thanks,

brings up a second blank tab called 'about blank' or, on occasions the

Thanks, with you now.

Just downloaded v3.4, it's probably nothing but maybe worth flagging up-
Virus Total flags the exe file as - suspicious.low.ml.score - by Trapmine
engine.

Also, has anyone noticed the second page which pops up after accessing this
web site offering resumes and CV's?

One of the ads on this page is running a script to launch another tab within
Chrome, naughty ..

[GNC] v 3.2.1 reconcile window

2019-01-29 Thread Jamestk
Hi good folks,

Quick question which has been puzzling me since upgrading to above version
sometime ago. In the reconcile there used to be a green tick button to
'reconcile' all of the ticked entries, this button no longer appears to
carry out that function, in fact it doesn't seem to do anything?

To achieve the same result requires opening the drop down menu, selecting
'finish' .

Lastly, what happened to the 'save for later' button, this gave the option
to come back to long reconciliations whilst not losing entries ticked so
far.

Thanks all.

Re: [GNC] Windows 10 installation very slow opening or saving file

2018-09-23 Thread Jamestk
>From memory the Linux version always seems to run that bit faster and
smoother, that was my impression when I had both installed albeit different
versions (could never work out how to download the latest version,).

Not sure if this will help but my load/save time whilst not fast have
improved since updating my account hierarchy. Over time I had built up a
large number of accounts and sub accounts needed for stock entry which
became unworkable on a day to day basis, eventually I did some house keeping
removing these and simplifying the account structure.

i remember reading a while back about error checking, perhaps this is a
function performed during saving (makes sense) and loading, complex account
structures my lengthen this process?

Have you guys entered any stock related entries?

Did you have any luck with this?

Recently upgraded to latest version but auto saving really problematic while
working, generally speaking it takes as long to load as saving relatively
small file.

Using Win 10 Pro with Samsung SSD

Going to switch off auto save for the moment to get things done.

Re: [GNC] Corrupted transaction export file - is this a bug, or do I do something wrong

2018-06-22 Thread Jamestk
Hello folks,

Still using an outdated version of GNU Cash which is fine apart from export
file as above. Typing in the file name and type (csv) and then clicking next
produces a file which opens in Excel, only problem in the figures have odd
characters in the same cell.

If this is something that's sorted in later version will upgrade,
alternatively is there a workaround- perhaps using the report function?

Thanks

Re: Clean CSV export

2017-07-02 Thread Jamestk
Thanks Gt, yep, I have used that software in the past with success.

Tried the export function but forgot about the hidden Excel option, instead
of accepting the default HTML file extension (which ports HTML code into
Excel, not wanted) manually enter file name with XLS extension.

It does throw an error when opening in Office 2010 but seems okay if you
continue, need to run a few more tests before relying on data just in case -
so far, so good!

PS, went to use the account tab colour code feature - you can tell
instantly this is open source GNU related, drop down pallet of colours, nope
lol complete rainbow where you have to copy the colours code into other tab
edits to repeat the same colour.

As a grateful user of GNU Cash I mean this in the nicest possible way, but
you guys sometimes go out of your way to make things more complicated than
they are

Clean CSV export

2017-07-01 Thread Jamestk
Hi folks,

My GNU cash file has become a bit too large with loads times and reports
taking a while to process. What I would like to do is export some of the GNU
cash registers to Excel for either archiving or to use on a spreadsheet, my
only concern having used other similar export functions in other programs is
how clean the data is?

Let me be more specific, sometimes the text/numbers can look as they appear
but contained within the cell is all sorts of characters which may interfere
with future calculations.

In summary, i would like the data to be exported as if it were typed in
directly to the spreadsheet itself.

Many thanks,
