Re: [GNC] Snap Package Manager
Hi Michael: It certainly would be nice to have another source for new releases of gnucash. I have just discovered Snap and have mixed "feelings" about it. I tried one install which resulted in no new application. The information on GC 2.6.21 from the find gnucash reveals: Name Version Developer Notes Summary gnucash-jz 2.6.21a jz - GnuCash is personal and small-business financial-accounting software I don't know what the "a" at the end of 2.6.21 means. At the end of day, I will create a new backup file with a new name and try an install. I will post my results. [GNC] Snap Package Manager
Hi: Is anyone using Snap Package manage? I installed SnapD on my Linux Mint 18.2 and tried installing an app, but after completing the installation, the app was not listed in my applications. I found GC 2.6.21 listed in Snap packages. I am currently using GC 2.6.17 (the latest from getdebs.net). I would like to upgrade but considering my experience with my attempted installation of another application, I am leery. If I try to install GC 2.6.21 using Snapd, would I need to uninstall GC 2.6.17 first? Hello Everyone: I am currently running LInux Mint 18.2 and GC 2.6.17 (the latest from getdebs.net). Re: [GNC] Addition of Mailing List Subject Prefix
Adrien: You have hit the nail on the head! Given all the time given to this thread, I think it is high time to end it. It has been a hugh distraction from what this list is all about. Just my $.02 worth. Les On 04/11/2018 10:17 AM, Adrien Monteleone wrote: I think this thread also illustrates that how people hit ‘reply/reply-all’ and to which message can break threads. So far I think it has at least 5 parts. I’d have to look at the archive page to be sure. Now we’re at a point where people are replying to broken off or stalled sections of the thread. My questions were rhetorical as I noted in a later reply to him. I knew what his mail client was and what its abilities are. (I could see it in the header) My point was that if he wants to ‘filter’ his mail, he has the tools to do so and they are not difficult to use. In fact, in his reply, he noted that he does physically filter mail into some 80 folders with about 154 different filtering rules. He just doesn’t *feel* like doing it with the list. Another user seemed to imply that his mail client could not do filtering. I found excerpts (and provided links) to the manual which described specifically how to manage mailing-list mail. Perhaps he wasn’t aware of this feature. I haven’t heard back. Seriously? Everyone has to have this tag added because *some* people either don’t know how or don’t *want* to use the features of their own e-mail client? Could you imagine what GnuCash would look like if the devs treated the app the same way? If they added (or removed) features, or re-arranged the UI simply because some people don’t *feel* like using it the way it was designed and intended to be used? Just wondering if you can add an automatic Subject Prefix in MailMan to all emails from this list (eg [GNC]) so that list emails have a subject like "[GNC] This is a sample Subject". This will enable faster identification of the mailing list emails (of which there are many) when eye scanning and the option to have a mail client rule to filter them into a separate folder. I think it's a great idea. My email client makes this Subject Prefix stand out very nicely. Yes, of course, I could design a filtering algorithm that could re-sort my mail, blah, blah, blah. Thanks for the reply, Adrien. Yes, I tried that repeatedly but kept getting the same error message. I decided to go back to a previous GC file, opened it and my problem is now solved. Re: Finance-Quote 1.47 Unable to retrieve Currency quotes
Thanks for the explanation Larry. Now I understand. I just don't know why I am unable to update currency quotes since 02/13/2018. Perhaps Alphavantage is just not robust enough to support all the users of GC plus what they were supporting before Yahoo went south last year. I appreciate what Erik Colson was able to put together in such a very short time. And Alphavantage seems to be the only game in town for the time being. All of the developers of GC need a big round of applause for keeping GC moving forward and answering all of the questions from users. Given this, any setting in gnucash is unlikely to change anything (and is probably why gnucash reverts to currency no matter what you do - it's the one data source that binds them all when it comes to currency). Thanks Tommy for your input. There was not any information on either the spun-out company or the company that did the spin-out. (both companies are Canadian stocks.) You can usually find the information at the spun-off company's web site (look for a link for "investor information") or as a document available from the company's stock transfer agent. I can imagine that sometimes such information may not be finalized at the time of spin-off, especially if the IRS objects to some part of it, but my impression is that these things are almost always pretty much settled before the time they occur because there's lots of money involved. Re: Stock Spin-Out
There is a stock-split function in GC. However it doesn't appear to do spin-outs. In my case, the company doing the spin-out is doing a 5 to 1 and there are no fractional shares. I just assigned the cost at 0.00 per share. Re: Online quotes fetching latest stock price but incorrect date; currency exchange rate also not working
Yet maybe another reason to end the absurd daylight saving time which does not save anything. On 02/19/2018 05:02 AM, Justin Smith wrote: Hi Justin, I've been chasing this issue for a couple of weeks - I'm pretty sure this is an ASX specific problem. Unfortunately, I think the problem lies in the alpha vantage data source - we're going to need to chase up with them to sort a fix, and may then need an update to Finance::Quote as well. Alternatively, we need to fix ASX.pm (per my previous post on this issue). Here's what I've found to date: 1) Finance::Quote pulls data from alphavantage using an address of the form: https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function=TIME_SERIES_DAILY&symbol=TLS.AX&apikey=* (You can test this directly with your own api key) From the comments in the Perl alphavantage module, this data set includes date and time data *if* the market is open. Otherwise it only returns date data only. The perl module removes the time data and returns the date data. 2) As you have observed (and as can be seen from the above link), the date returned by alpha vantage for normal ASX stocks is *early* by 1 day - for example, the data set I ran on Sunday 19th returned correct prices for Monday 12th through Friday 16th, but assigned these to Sunday 11th through Thursday 15th. 3) I don't believe this can be corrected by timezone shifts - I suspect that because the alpha vantage module does not return a time, the perl will (reasonably) assume that the alphavantage data is returned at mid-night (i.e. if alpha vantage returns 12/2/2018, then perl/gnucash will treat this as 12/2/2018 00:00 for the purposes of time zone calcs). If this is the case, it doesn't matter what time zone shift you apply, it won't change the date. I ran a set of test on this in gnucash, and couldn't make the date change no matter what time zone I chose (I'm on East Coast Australian time). 4) ETFs and possibly managed funds in general are updated later, and just the at the moment these get the correct date. e.g. https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function=TIME_SERIES_DAILY&symbol=VAS.AX&apikey=* Further notes on this - a) from comments elsewhere on the net, it looks as though ETFs/managed funds are only updated once per day, and b) weird things happen to this data on the weekend - e.g. VAS has correct price information for Friday 16th, but the next available data point is 4th Feb. This anomaly gets corrected at the start of the week (don't think this matters for Gnucash use). 5) I'm having the same problem with USD currency rates. Maybe a change in the API or the constants for AUD/USD. I haven't looked into the code for this yet. 6) All this may change when daylight saving changes here and/or in the US - right at the moment, the ASX is closing spot on midnight East Coast US time (alpha vantage reference time zone) - our data may suddenly start working correctly when daylight saving changes. So something else to watch for over the next few weeks. At this stage, I have only spent time running the problem down - I haven't had time to think about a fix. Cheers, Larry Thanks Larry. That's great info. After reading your email I did two tests today (same gnc-fq-dump alphavantage NAB.AX command): * Run at 8.00am 19 Feb Perth time (7.00pm 18 Feb New York). ASX open. Returns $29.36 with a date of 18 Feb. This price is actually spot on - assuming a 20min delay on quotes, which most free services quoting the ASX have. But of course the date is wrong. * Run at 6.30pm 19 Feb Perth time (5.30am 19 Feb New York). ASX closed. Returns $29.46 with a date of 18 Feb. This is the correct closing price. But wrong date as expected. It suggests that simply adding one to the date would fix the issue. But you're right that we need to test the daylight saving changes. And no doubt there will different dates in NY and Sydney... Re: Trading Accounts
Good advice David. I have always just used my broker reports for tax purposes. I guess I never really relied on GC for such reporting. Currency Issue
I know this has been discussed in the past: I have a foreign bank account, denominated in the local currency. Within this account, I also hold other currencies. However, the other currencies, instead of relating to the local currency, is relating to my native currency: USD. This greatly distorts the total value of my foreign bank balance. Re: Gnucash on Linux Mint
Thanks David. I am very familiar building an app, but when you go down that path, there is no upgrade, so you are sort of locked into that method. In the past, I have gotten bogged down with dependencies, but like you stated, can be handled with apt. A long time ago, I used Gentoo. Being lazy, I will just wait for the next getdeb update. :-) Les On 12/22/2017 12:45 AM, DaveC49 wrote: Hi Les, The Linux Mint Software manager version is usually 1-2 releases behind the latest release of Gnucash. getDeb is sometimes a bit more up to date. If not, it is not too hard to build on Linux Mint using the instructions at https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building#Ubuntu_16.04_LTS_.28Xenial_Xerus.29. If you aren't familiar with cmake use the Autotools build. I usually run ..gnucash/configure setting the --prefix option to /usr/local/bin rather than /opt/gnucash or /opt/gnucash-devel until it reports no errors, installing any packages it reports it needs as errors that are not already installed. There is a list of dependencies in the README.dependencies files and most can be installed directly with apt before running the ..gnucash/configure. - David Cousens -- Sent from: http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/GnuCash-User-f1415819.html ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. You will likely have to download the source and build it yourself. You could ask the distro maintainers if they will be pushing a newer version into the repo. A couple of years ago, when I was learning how to test GnuCash packages for inclusion in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, I had some email exchanges with a volunteer at getdeb.net <http://getdeb.net>, and he encouraged me to help them test GnuCash getdeb packages, implying they would get into getdeb.net <http://getdeb.net> much quicker that way. I found the process to be fairly easy, though they use a build environment different from the official Ubuntu process so I got bogged down trying to understand the technical differences (and my focus at the time was making sure the LTS package was good). Other projects have distracted me since then, I'm sorry to say. In any case, if you find yourself dependent upon getdeb.net <http://getdeb.net>, consider sending them a monetary donation to pay for bandwidth, and also consider contacting them to see if you can help keep your favorite package(s) updated. More F:Q Issues
First, I had an upgrade of Perl to 5.22.1. Not sure if that is what caused my Linux Get Quotes to just stop without any message. Perl on Mac is still at 5.18. Second, I just checked currencies in Security Editor. Over the weekend, I changed the 9 currencies I use to use Alphavantage. When I checked today, all the currencies what reverted to "Single". I tried to change them back to Alphavantage but as soon as I had made the change, they reverted back to "Single". This is also true of my Mac. Third, I have no clue (nor any way to check) why Get Quotes on my Mac stopped with a message that retrieval encountered an unknown error. Any suggestions as to how to fix these issues would be greatly appreciated. F::Q
I attempted to download quotes today (the first opportunity since adding Alphavantage as source). My Mac died in progress with a message of unknown error. My Linux Mint 18.2 just stopped without completing (no message). However, my 2 ASX stocks ended up being priced in USD which resulted in the 2 stocks having values of over $2 million, instead of being less than A$400.00. I tried correcting this error in Price Editor but it did not change. I ended up reverting to my previous save. So, no joy. I hope others had better results. I am not sure how to proceed at this point. When I run the same command from my Linux Mint 18.2 I get Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses: symbol: NYSE:TGT (deduced) <=== required date: ** missing ** <=== recommended currency: ** missing ** <=== required last: <=\ nav: <=== one of these price: <=/ timezone: <=== optional ** This stock quote cannot be used by GnuCash! When I go to Price Editor and run Get Quotes I get a long list: "unable to receive these quotes". When I run ./gnc-fq-dump from my MacOS 10.13, I get "no such file or directory". When I try Get Quotes I get "There was an unknown error while retrieving the price quotes". So, I still have something missing. Re: Gnucash usage for small banks and GL derivation rules
Banking is a very complex operation (I was a banker for 15 years). You have interest accruals: interest on loans (loans are an asset and the interest is income), accruals: interest on saving, time deposits, etc. (saving, checking, etc are liabilities and the interest is an expense). Real time, multi-user processing of deposits and withdrawal. Accounting for government regulation compliance. The list goes on and on. There are systems designed specifically for banking, and probably very expensive and usually run on large computer systems with redundancy. There are also service bureaus that provide these functions for smaller banks (probably the best solution for a new operation).
