[GNC] Top-Level Account:Expenses not totaling in Budget
I am creating an income vs expenses budget, inputting my monthly values for July to December 2020. The total cumulative running value for Expenses is not changing as expenses are added to the month of July for all expenses. For example... - $60 - gas - $60 - phone - $1500 - rent - and so on The total monthly expenses should be about $2400 however it is not increasing over the value of say, the rent, ignoring the other monthly expenses. I tried estimating the expenses and that ignored the rent, entirely, the largest of my expenses. Here are my questions but #1 is the most pressing. 1. How do I get a total monthly expense value for all expenses? 2. Is there not a feature to autofill or drag the monthly values, say $60 for phone, into all months? Otherwise copy and paste are so error-prone and time-consuming. 3. How are 1-time payments for a time period handled? Examples are insurance paid once per six months. 4. Can the Column of the budget not be adjusted by inputting a width value like a column in a spreadsheet? Grabbing and pulling the column is not exact and the width changes with the browser window width requiring constant fiddling. 5. How do I remove specific expenses from the list of expenses under the Expenses top-level account? I don't want to see expenses listed where I will have a zero value. Re: [GNC] How to remove unused accounts
Hi David, I figured out that I needed to add a final transaction to close out some unused accounts. However, I have a few that I don't know how to close out. For example, I started an "Investments" account to monitor my 401K contributions and abandoned it. It now has a total of $12,900, which is being included in the reports. How do I close this account while keeping the transactions? Re: [GNC] I can't get the budget feature to work.
Mystery solved. I did as you suggested and went through all of my account types and their child accounts and did have some that were not categorized properly. Voila! The budget now works. I would like to suggest some kind of user help when issues arise. If the budget is not working, possibly an error message or a popup with helpful suggestions or a bug report popup. Back to the budget, I am looking forward to testing my budget this year and making wiser money choices and putting some money aside for special purchases. Having my money under control is such a comforting feeling. Thanks to the creators of this wonderful tool. Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi David, I think I found it. The autosave time interval is set to 5 mins. I tested it. I made a change. Wait 5 mins and it mostly works. A log file was created at 5 mins and the finance.gnucash file was updated at 5 mins. However, the finance.gnucash file did not append the date, time, min and sec to the file name. Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi David, Here's what I did. - I did a "save as" and renamed the file to "finances.gnucash" then closed the file. - Reopened Gnucash which opened the very same file. - Made a change and saved it which created a log file. - Closed the same file and repeated these steps. - No backup file was created . Only the original "finances.gnucash" file remained. Is something wrong? Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi Colin, I understand. Since I don't really need to know the minute and seconds when a file is saved at this time, I will leave the file name as it is. My next topic, for another email, is how to set up a budget. I have tried and watched videos and read documentation but never quite get it to work or understand what it is doing. Thanks for your help this morning. Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi Colin, The "save" option did get focus once I made a change and saved the file. However, the file name doesn't look right. See below. It is using the name that I created when I used "save as" though I used "save" but the log file name looks right. What is happening? Is this a problem? - finances.gnucash.20181202.gnucash - finances.gnucash.20181202.gnucash.20181202095503 Thanks, On Sun, Dec 2, 2018 at 9:15 AM Colin Law wrote: > On Sun, 2 Dec 2018 at 17:11, Lorrie Laskey wrote: > > > > Hi, > > > > So I need to use "save" instead of "save as"? Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi, So I need to use "save" instead of "save as"? My "save" option is grayed out. Thanks, On Sun, Dec 2, 2018 at 8:53 AM Colin Law wrote: > On Sun, 2 Dec 2018 at 16:40, Lorrie Laskey wrote: > > > > Hi all, > > > > This message is for two topics. [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues
Hi all, This message is for two topics. If you respond, please either select one topic or divide the message by topic to make it easier for me to follow the messages. #1 Saving I don't understand how to save Gnucash or properly close it, it seems. I have used Gnucash for years and used the "save" option. In the past, I selected "save" but recently ran into "lock file" issue. Next I tried "save as" but then a pop up window appeared asking me to save it as an xml file. I did figure out that I needed to name the file and Gnucash would add the .xml extension. Is this the correct method? What are the different file types for? I really did read the documentation but the save option explanations are too far above my head. Can someone explain what the save options are at an intro level? #2 Recent "lock file" issues forced me to troubleshoot and find other methods to open and save. Note that I am the only person using Gnucash, on one computer. So I don't understand how this file is being generated.
