Thank you so much Gyle. I just received and email indicating there is a new
software update available. Is there a specific process to follow to migrate to
the new version without loss of the dat file??

Matthew,

That seems like a useful strategy. You may be able to get more information
about what is happening if you examine the trace file
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile se the MacOSX section) immediately
after running Gnucash on a restored copy of the file. AFAIK it is
overwritten each time GnuCash is run. I doubt if the default install for
MacOSX is built with the --debug option, which increases the amount of
debugging information generated, but some additional info on errors may be
in the tracefile. I run on Linux not a Mac. John Ralls generally can provide
more specific info on MacOSX problems.

Re: [GNC] Lost Data

2020-01-08 Thread Matthew Lybanon
Sorry, something happened to the first line of the listing I included in my
last post when I pasted it into the message. The correct first line is

 -rw-r--r--@ 1 matthewlybanon staff 52409 Jan 7 16:02 MAGS Show.gnucash

I tried opening it by navigating directly to that file, and got the “Report
error …” message. I also tried opening one of the backup files (from the
Gnucash file menu, without first renaming it MAGS Show.gnucash). Same result.

I suspect something may have happened to my copy of the Gnucash program. There
were a few peculiarities when I ran it yesterday. I entered one transaction
(the same way I have previously entered hundreds of transactions), and it ended
up with the year 1899 attached to that line. I changed the date to 2019, and
things looked normal. But when I tried to reconcile the December 2019 bank
statement something about the process seemed different. Again, sorry to be so
vague but I can’t quite put my finger on what was wrong.

I will retrieve a _.gnucash file from several days ago from my Time Machine
backup, make sure it is called MAGS Show.gnucash (I’ll hide the current MAGS
Show.gnucash in a temporary folder), and see if Gnucash can open it. If that
doesn’t work then I don’t think it will hurt to reinstall Gnucash.app and see
if that solves the problem.

Re: [GNC] Lost Data

Matthew

Not sure what is going on. Were you opening using a recent entry in the File
Open dialog? If so try navigating explicitly to your data file and opening
it explicitly. Before doing so check there are no files with a .LCK
extension in the directory with your data file as these will normally block
opening the file although that should bring uop a dialog allowing you to
override it. Deleting the files with the .LCK extension should not cause any
problems as long as you don't have GnuCash open in another instance. They
are intended to stop multiple instances of the program from opening the same
file at the same time. AFAIK ".LNK" files are Windows created files and
shouldn't have any effect on MacOSX or Linux. The report error tends to
indicate that GnuCash is trying to open a report. Did you have a report tab
open when you last closed the file?

[GNC] Lost Data

2020-01-07 Thread Matthew Lybanon
Gnucash 3.5-1 running on a MacBook Pro under macOS 10.14.6. I’m been using
Gnucash for years for very simple accounting, primarily just maintaining a
checkbook register. Today I had trouble reconciling a bank statement. After
clicking “Finish” the reconciled transactions had a “y” in the appropriate
column, but when I tried to quit Gnucash I got a message saying that something
hadn’t been saved and asking if I wanted to save it. Sorry to be so vague, but
I don’t recall exactly what the message was.

When I restarted Gnucash the transactions that were previously reconciled
weren’t; they had “n” in place of “y”. I tried to reconcile again, but the next
time I started Gnucash and looked at the register I got the message

"Report error

An error occurred while running the report."

I tried opening an earlier version of the data file (NAME.gnucash.string of
numbers.gnucash) but got the same error message. I have not deleted anything. I
have _.gnucash files, one _.LNK files, _.log files.

What went wrong and–more important–how can I get the data back?

This is not a different problem than finding OTHER data on your computer
(data created by other apps, say a document created by a word
processor). Your operating system provides tools to find files by
various "hooks" (name searches, date created or modified, etc. )

So let's star with name. Do you have ANY ideas of what you might have
named your data files? How about the file extension? Would all of your
gnucash data files ended with the same .xyz? (say .gnucash). Even if
your DATA file might not (some of mine don't) gnucash would have been
creating backup and log files in the same directory (file folder) so you
could search for all files ending .log or .gnucash --- try the latter as
other applications might be creating files ending in .log but unlikely
anything but gnucash creating ones ending in .gnucash
REMEMBER --- if you weren't naming your data files to end .gnucash, the
ones you find in that directory ending .gnucash are not what you want,
just getting you to the right directory and showing you earlier parts of
the name you forgot.

PS -- once you know the NAME of your data file, you can start gnucash
and tell it (file=>open) to open THAT file instead of selecting from the
list of four.

Hi John,

I'm pretty sure there is no secret list of all the gnucash data files you've
opened.

You might like to check you just are not seeing some transactions because of
a filter you've applied:
In the register, View Filter By

If you still cannot see some transactions, the list of recently opened files
is held (In Windows) int the registry.
This may help:

Re: [GNC] lost data

2019-01-24 Thread Adrien Monteleone
In a worst case, there are linux-based data recovery tools you can run from a
live cd that can image the drive and rebuild files from that image.

Deleting a file and even emptying the trash does not necessarily destroy the
data, but simply prevents the OS from accessing it and frees up the disk space
to be written to. (it may not have been re-used yet)

However, the time involved in doing such a recovery may be greater than simply
re-entering the data if you have it in some other form.

Best of luck.

Adrien

Looking for files with .gnucash extensions starting with your home directory
and then expanding the search is your best
bet. ($find -name "*.gnucash" will find all occurrences in the directory
pointed to by path in Linux).

A common problem which occurs sometimes is having opened a backup file (which
is located in the same directory as your
main file) and then subsequently opening the main file again. Your missing
transactions could be in a backup file. See
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/basics-backup1.html.

Re: [GNC] lost data

2019-01-24 Thread David Cousens
John,

If Adrien's suggestions don't work the following site has techniques for
finding files on windows
https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/windowsbasics/finding-files-on-your-computer/1/

and for Linux
https://www.linode.com/docs/tools-reference/tools/find-files-in-linux-using-the-command-line/.

[GNC] lost data

2019-01-24 Thread John Sears via gnucash-user

Hi All,

A few months ago,  I moved the location of my GNUcash file (along with
the addressing of the associated linked files - you may remember a post
about this).  I have been living a fairly hectic life since,  moving
country, massively downsizing  etc, and a fairly annoying pc problem.  I
am sure that I did a lot of work on  GNU Cash  in Q4, but noticed the
other day that all of these transactions were missing and that my
GNUCash was pointing at an old GNUCash file.  I've looked everywhere on
my computer and USBs for the file that I think might contain the
transactions that I am sure I put in  ( It was a lot of work, so I don't
want to just retype them again), but I just cannot find the file.

I notice that GNUCash highlights the  last 4 files that have been opened
( under the file tab) .  Is there a way to see all the files that have
been opened historically and their location in the file directory.  I
just cannot find the correct file or any logs for the data that I
entered in Q4, and at least if I know the possible paths, I might be
able to ascertain if the data has somehow managed to be deleted from
that location, and then determine my way forward
