Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-28 Thread randix
An update and recap...

I purchased a Google Pixel Chromebook ($999).

I activated the Linux option on the Chromebook by following this link (it
specifically used the Google Pixel Chromebook as their example):

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-install-linux-apps-your-chromebook

The activation was simple and without any issues. If one has a chromebook
other than the one mentioned above and in the article, I make zero promises
re your success…[that’s a disclaimer].

Prior to purchasing the Chromebook, I was using a Dell XPS 13 with GnuCash
3.3 installed, Windows 10. Although I could get an older version of GnuCash
linux installed, it did not look good, and more importantly, my 3.3 GnuCash
files were not compatible with the older version. I was desperate (my XPS
laptop had just been stolen, and I had opted to go for the Chromebook
because of the linux support which I assumed would work with GnuCash).

I started a thread on the GnuCash user site… admittedly in desperation.
Although I had extensive backups of my GnuCash data and supplementary files,
that did me little good if I could not get the program installed.

http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/GNC-Chromebooks-td4704359.html

If you read the thread (hundreds of posts), you will see I got all of kinds
of assistance and suggestions, in addition to private replies that many
users were kind enough to send me.

Btw, using the product “Crossover” which allows Window programs to run on
Linux, did not work for me, eg for GnuCash.

To cut to the chase, after many dead ends, it was suggested to me to try
flathub…

https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.gnucash.GnuCash

I first entered at the terminal prompt:

sudo apt-get install flatpak

then I entered...

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

I restarted the Chromebook

Per the instructions on the flathub site, to install GnuCash, I entered at
the terminal prompt:

flatpak install flathub org.gnucash.GnuCash

but that did not work. Colin Law, a member on the GnuCash user site, who is
now on my Christmas list, suggested that I needed to add “sudo”, without the
quotes, prior to the above line. I did and it worked perfectly.

It installed:
Version: 3.2
Build ID: 3.2+ (2018-06-24)
Finance::Quote: -

I’ve been using it now for several weeks, and I am so grateful I have it up
and running. I have encountered a few issues which I’ve not yet had time to
investigate, but I’m so grateful to have the basic program up and running,
it’s the least of my concerns. Those issues include occasional issues when
I go and reconcile after running aqbanking, retrieving prices, and not
having time to figure out where to place the file to customize the colors.
But all in all, I’m very pleased and so, so relieved.

I do understand that in the next Chrome OS release or 2, they will be adding
more support to the linux system, to make it even easier to work with, so I
look forward to that.

Again, much thanks to everyone who helped me out. Seems like only yesterday
when I bought 4 6-packs of Stella, and spent days manually transferring over
all of my transactions from Quicken… ah, to be young again :)

Hope the above summary is of some use.

The alternative is to install for the user only instead of system wide.
Flatpak has a command line switch for that:

flatpak install --user flathub org.gnucash.GnuCash

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-10 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Perhaps someone more familiar with flatpak can chime in, but my suspicion is a
permissions issue either with your user not belonging to a particular group
(possibly there is a flatpak group) or the group in question itself doesn’t
have appropriate permissions.

I’d investigate along those lines first.

The I/O socket problem I’d think had something to do with your internet
connection or Flathub itself.

Wrt flatpak, I have created nightly build scripts but I don't have access to
the nightly build server. So it's now up to Derek to complete the setup.

I am not involved (yet) with the gnucash flatpak on flathub. I first want our
own nightly builds to work properly.

And there are still a few issues to sort out on my nightly scripts:
- it can't do online quotes yet
- I have added the documentation in the flatpak but it probably won't display
yet because yelp isn't packaged.

Those will be addressed later.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Ideally, one should be able to choose a repository with a more up to date
version so you don’t have to build. (such as sid)

If I had the hardware to test, I’d go through the build and add the recipe to
the wiki, but alas...(anyone?)

But note, you can install flatpak and use that version as well.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Did you read the link I sent?

It explains you might have to *first* set your Chromebook to either the Beta or
Dev channels. (be sure to make a backup as if you want to revert to Stable,
you’ll have to wipe the machine)

This might be why it isn’t working, unless John’s suggestion is successful.

Also, while the error output may not be correct, be certain you are not using
caps as commands are case-sensitive. (the error reported that ’SUDO’ was
unknown, not ’sudo’)

Can you run `su`?
It will ask for the root password and give you a root shell from which you can
run the apt commands, meaning that you run each one without ’sudo’ in front.

OK, it looks like *someone* needs to build a newer version of GnuCash under
ChromeOS OR really under the version of Debian used by ChromeOS or possibly a
version of Ubuntu that is binary compatible with the version of Debian used by
ChromeOS. *I* *have* VMs running Ubuntu 14.04 and could probably create VMs
running 16.04 or even 18.04, but I have no clue which (if any) are binary
compatible with ChromeOS... I don't have the wherewithall to install Debian
itself (I have dialup Internet so I cannot do any sort of network install -- I
do have a local repo for Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, and 18.04 on a removable disk
that I sneakernet to someplace to rsync it up to date from time to time).

The *ideal* option would be to build from sources on the chromebook itself. I
guess that would be possible, just a bit non-trivial.

Is there any way to get a more detailed message than "error while installing"?
Eg. which dependencies are missing, etc. It *could* be possible to hunt down
additional (missing) packages and install them. Or something like that.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
1. No, once your data files are in a newer version, you can’t go lower than
2.6.19. (2.6.21 is technically the last of 2.6.x if you can find it)

Have you tried a command line install?

Open a terminal on your Chromebook and try:

sudo apt-cache showpkg gnucash

That will report the info for the gnucash package in the Debian 9 repository to
which you are linked. If it says ‘Versions: 2.6.19’ or higher, you should be
good to proceed. (if lower, you’ll have to build)

First, make sure any previous versions are removed:

sudo apt-get purge gnucash

When that is done, then enter:

sudo apt-get autoremove

to clean up any unneeded stuff that got installed along with those old
versions. (if you need them again, the next command will re-install them)

Then:

sudo apt-get install gnucash

That should complete successfully. (be sure to reply ‘y’ to proceed even if
there are additional packages listed as those are dependencies gnucash needs)

If this doesn’t work, or you still can’t open your file for some reason, report
back with any error messages.

2. Building isn’t terribly difficult, but you don’t need to. Earlier in the
thread I replied with this link:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/08/19/install-linux-applications-chrome-os/

They have instructions for installing flatpak. (via command line)

From there, you can install the flatpak version which is I think currently at
3.2, but might be updated soon.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Not willing to give up, so two (2) more questions...

1. So my data files are from 3.3, I can't use them in the version I was
finally able to install (2.6.15--says I need 2.6.19 or higher). Question:
If I find another computer to install the current version of gnucash on, and
*export*the data from my data files, would I be able to *import* that export
file into 2.6.15? eg, is that a backdoor to get my data into an older
version that is not otherwise backward compatible?

2. I'm currently in DC (at Dulles, actually), on my way back to Vegas. Won't
know for an hour or 2, but may then be headed tonight to San Francisco to do
a new month project. Is there anyone around Vegas or San Francisco who
might be interested in building (or whatever you do, beyond my expertise) a
current version of GnuCash that I can use on my Google Pixel Chromebook
using Linux? If so, shoot me an email, butterands...@gmail.com, give me an
estimate or ask me whatever you need to ask me to come up with how much
you'd do it for, etc.

Thanks!

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
To bring the thread current...

I tried installing an amd64 deb file for version 3.3.2 and got an install
error message.

I tried installing an amd64 deb file for version 2.6.15-1 and was
successful, but unfortunately my data files are from 3.3 and are not
compatible, says i need version 2.6.19 or higher

I tried installing an amd64 ubuntu deb file for version 3.2-1 and got an
install error message.

So, I'm back to square 1.

The 3.3 ones probably want newer / different dependent libraries. Such is
"normal" in the Linux world. I'm still using 2.4.15 on my CentOS 6 machines
(really old library versions). It does what I need and when I upgrade to
CentOS 7, I'll also upgrade to a newer GnuCash...

This is the deal: The gnucash.org site only has Mac and MS-Windows versions of
gnucash.org. In the Mac and MS-Windows there isn't any sort of OS supported
repository of software (except what Apple and Microsoft (or their "partners")
*sell* -- there isn't a group of people maintaining a collection of open
source software that can be installed with the OS's package management system
-- dpkg/apt-get for Debian flavored (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and (appearently)
ChromOS), rpm/yum for RedHat flavors (Fedora, RHEL/CentOS, Mandrake, Suse,
etc.). Since ChromOS is based on Debian, you need a .deb file (this is the
binary built for a Debian flavored Linux and is something dpkg knows how to
deal with and it is what apt-get will snarf from a repository and pass onto
dpkg. (Appearently there are GUI / point-and-click wrappers for dpkg and/or
apt-get).

Many advanced / adventuresome Linux users will download the source and have
all kinds of fun (at the command line) with the likes of configure and make to
build gnucash from source, but it sounds like that is beyond your skill /
knowledge / comfort level. Otherwise most Linux users will either do

apt-get install gnucash
OR
yum install gnucash

Depending on the flavor of Linux they are using and this will install a
version of GnuCash that was built just for their flavor of Linux. These
*binary* versions are built and maintained by the keepers of the Linux open
source repositories and are updated from time to time. It does not appear
to be as easy to do this for ChromOS, but it appears to be *close*. There
appears to be things you can do to hook into the base Debian or possibly a
Debian-derived repository (Ubuntu) and get a .deb file when can then be
installed on your Chromebook. A little extra work, but it looks like it is
doable.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Colin... I'm so desperate to get gnucash back, I'll take the 1950
version!

When I go to gnucash.org and click on the distributable option, all I get
are options for windows and mac. For Linux it says, what I am printing
below. Obviously I did not get a "linux distribution" I simply turned it on
in chromebooks. When I go to look at older versions, I don't see a linux
install option. Not only do I not have a desire to build it from scratch, I
wouldn't know where to start.

Is there no place I can download a file apparently with a "deb" extension
for a linux install? I don't care what version it is. Or am I
missing something (again)???

Linux
Most linux distributions come bundled with a version of GnuCash, though it's
not always the most recent version and it may not have been installed by
default. Still it is recommended to use the GnuCash version that comes with
your distribution.

Below are ways to install GnuCash on some of the more popular distributions:

Fedora: Fedora users can install GnuCash through
System->Administration->Add/Remove Software (Gnome) or
Applications->System->Software Management (KDE).
Mandriva: Mandriva users can install GnuCash through the Software Management
in the Mandriva Linux Control Center.
Redhat/Centos: Redhat and CentOS don't have GnuCash in their repositories by
default. It can be installed however from the third-party Epel repository.
For more details on configuring this additional software repository for your
setup, see Epel's wiki page.
Solus: Solus users can install GnuCash through the Software Center (Office
Software -> Financial Software -> gnucash).
Ubuntu: Ubuntu users can install GnuCash through the Software Center. This
will install GnuCash under the Office category in the Applications menu.
If your distro doesn't ship with GnuCash or you wish to install a different
version than it ships with, you could try to build GnuCash directly from the
source code. The GnuCash wiki has guidelines for several distributions.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread Jim Passmore
Looks like Croutini installs a Debian container by default, so if you
search debian.org for gnucash and sid (the cutting edge, unstable Debian
release) you find gnucash 3.3 [1], or you can find version 2.6 in the
stable branch [2]. Near the bottom of those pages are links to download
pages, so click the amd64 link, and pick your closest download location. I
would just go for broke on the first try and use the 3.3 link to see what
happens. After you get the deb file, go back to your instructions.

Also, if it doesn't work you might try one of the earlier releases. If you
don't want to go all the way back to 2.6, try Ubuntu packages (closely
derived from Debian) such as this v. 3.2. [3].

Hope you find one that works!
Jim

You downloaded the source. Now you need to compile it... The .deb file is
not on the gnucash.org site. A newer version might be available in another
Debian-ish repo (eg Ubuntu or a PPA).

Only if you have also installed all of the build tools (compilers, binutils)
and -dev dependencies (various lib*-dev packages) and then plan on building it
(./configure; make; sudo make install).

Not directly.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread Colin Law
You have downloaded the source files, to build the software from source is
not a trivial task. Do you definitely need 3.3? If not then try selecting
the Distribution Version and see what that gives you.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Ok, so I downloaded an app that decompresses on a chromebook the tar.bz file
I downloaded, but there's a long list of files and none of them end in
".deb" which I understand is the Linux installation file, so obviously (?) I
downloaded the wrong one... can you point me to what I should have
downloaded?

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-07 Thread randix
Ok, I think I'm getting closer... after some more research and exploring...

1. I have the latest Google Pixel Chromebook which does support the Linux
option

2. With the help of the following recent article (different from what I
posted earlier), it was quite simple to turn the Linux option ON.

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-install-linux-apps-your-chromebook

3. If you refer to the article, I've now reached the point where it says
"Download and Install an application"

*4. I went to www.gnucash.org and under "Download GnuCash 3.3" it lists
Linux and gives 2 options from which to download, "Source" and "via
distribution". I chose "source" and it downloaded, gnucash-docs-3.3.tar.gz.

4a. [QUESTION] Is that the right file for me to download?

4b. [QUESTION] The final instructions from the article in #5 below are very
clear, but how do I extract/decompress the downloaded file in "4a." above on
my Chromebook, and will it create one file with a "deb" extension?*

5. These are the article instructions for the remaining steps:

/Once the installation file is downloaded, open the File browser.
Click Downloads.
Copy and paste the .deb installation file to the Linux files folder.

Click Linux files
Right click or two finger tap on the trackpad while your pointer hovers over
the file name.
Click Install with Linux (Beta).
The program will install, and when it's done, you can open it from the app
drawer. That's it!/

Thanks for your assistance, again...

From what I’ve read elsewhere, this isn’t necessary. You can install GnuCash
directly as other replies in this thread have noted. But you first have to turn
on Crostini. (available in ChromeOS 69 and above)

I should follow, in order to install the Linux version of GnuCash?

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-06 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Yes,

No need for a vm at all unlike what I thought at first.

If you have ChromeOS 69 or better you can enable a beta feature called Crostini
that will run linux apps in their own containers. The apps can be installed
from CLI using apt-get. It’s tied to the Debian 9 Stretch repository.

I don’t know of any info on adding PPA’s.

As noted in another reply, if you can find a 3.3 .deb file, you can easily
install that, or use the flatpak.

A worst case scenario would involve a vm to build a .deb to install from.

However, I’d bet that if you enable Crostini, you can probably pull in all the
build tools you need, grab the tarball and build directly. The instructions
would probably follow the wiki’s Build on Linux recipe.

If I had the hardware, I test it myself.

Adrien

Is that the GnuCash for Android you are referring to? That might be what you
are seeing. And no, it is not GnuCash, it is an outside project people can use
to record their activity on their phone and then later import into GnuCash
proper.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-06 Thread randix
Not quite understanding why Google Play is entering the thread. Correct me if
I'm wrong (won't be the first time), but there is NO "app" for the "real"
GnuCash. There is an app that has been causing enormous confusion for ages
called GnuCash, but it's NOT GnuCash. The folks behind the app, are not the
same folks behind the "true" GnuCash that is full featured and which I've
enjoyed for years since fleeing Quicken. Feel feel to correct me if I'm
wrong, but that's always my understanding.

I know for a fact that the GnuCash APP works on chromebook, cause it was the
first thing I tried to install. But knowing that it's not really "GnuCash",
and not having a clue since I no longer have access to the "real" GnuCash
how I would export my chart of accounts to it, and not having any clue how
to get all the years of data into that app, I'm gun shy.

Color me clueless, which I freely plead guilty to...

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-06 Thread GWB
Wow; that's excellent. The Crouton page also mentions Crostini:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/docs/+/master/containers_and_vms.md

Which does not require running with dev enabled.

Pixelbooks work with Crostini. Here's the hardware list by motherboard:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/docs/+/master/containers_and_vms.md#Supported-Now

So three options at least: Crostini, Crouton, or Google Play Store.

Re: [GNC] Chromebooks

2018-10-06 Thread GWB
You might be able to gun gnucash on a chromebook using Google Play
Store. Here's a list of ChromeOS Hardware Google says will work with
Google Play:

https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps

I know it can work because I'm looking at GnuCash 2.4.0 right now on
my LG V20. It opens my gnucash file from my ubuntu 14 laptop (gnucash
version 2.6.7). So it does recognize and open the gnucash file from
my laptop. I think it even opened the sqlite .gnucash file, and saved
it as an .xml. But I can't swear to that.

I have not tried data entry on the android phone. My guess is that
data entry on a Chromebook might be something like dancing around a
dumpster fire, but it might be better than that. I would try to
download gnucash from the Google Play Store (if your chromebook lets
you) and try to open your most recent backup file. You might have to
send it as an email attachment to yourself, and use the browser on the
Chromebook to save it to the device.

Your obsessive backup compulsion is a good thing, a very good thing.
I celebrate that disease myself. Chromebooks are a little awkward
outside of their principal intended use (web browsing maybe? I can't
tell), but they can work.

Very sorry you lost your laptop. That really hoovers. Worse things
can happen (like dropping the keys to your Saab in Lake Superior), but
just the aggravation of replacing the machine and software is very
time consuming.

Does anyone on the list know of a virtual machine over internet set up
that could run gnucash? Amazon and Google clouds say they can do
something like that, but it would involve some kind of (X)windows
client over internet.

I can heartily endorse crouton (https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton) as a
way to install Linux on a chromebook. I did it for a couple years, and
Ubuntu ran beautifully, but there will of course be a dependency on how
powerful it is. I had an Acer C720 with 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD, and an Intel
I3, where many Chromebooks of that era had 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, and a Celeron.

You will have to use developer mode, and enabling that does a power-wash on
the chromebook, but other than being careful not to lose any files, it's
pretty easy. I would definitely give it a try if I were you.

This link gives some info on flatpaks as well:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/08/19/install-linux-applications-chrome-os/

Note, ChromeOS is using the Debian9 Stretch repos, so if you just use apt-get
you won’t get the latest GnuCash version.

You’ll either need a .deb from a PPA (or build it yourself) or try the flatpak.
(not sure if Geert has started packaging this yet for 3.3)

It’s not quite correct. Chrome OS started off as a fork of Linux with the
Chrome browser as its GUI, but it’s grown a bit. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS
.

If you search the web for “gnome on chrome os” you’ll get a number of sites
that purport to facilitate running Linux applications. AFAIK no one here has
tested any of them, and some may require developer skills. Good luck.

A chromebook runs ChromOS. ChromOS is a version of Linux, with Google's GUI
frontend. I *believe* a Linux build of GnuCash should run under ChromOS.
What I don't know is how one would install GnuCash on a chromebook. I run an
older version of CentOS (6) and GnuCash 2.4.15 is in the epel repo, so it is
trivial to install with the package manager (yum/rpm). I don't know how extra
/ third party software is installed under ChromOS. I don't know if there is a
prebuilt binary for ChromOS. There are binaries in repos for many other
Linux distros. If it is possible to install the build infrastructure
(compilers, libraries, etc.) for ChromOS, it should be possible to build from
source.
