Re: [GNC] Schedule transaction for 2 Wednesday?

2023-03-13 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Yes, I see the arrow, but the list on the screen runs only through
"30th" and unless you need "31st" you wouldn't scroll to see the other
options. As the initial visible part of the list only contains the days
of the month, there's no reason to expect that the down arrow will show
anything other than "31st". (oddly, there are multiple blank lines at
the beginning of the list, if they were removed, then other options
would be visible right away)

Adrien

Yes, I was thinking of "conditional" in the sense of "If...then"... and
that AND and OR are merely complex operations; however, in a broader sense,
they are all conditional.

The earliest the second Thursday can be is the 8th and the latest is
the 14th, so if you want the Friday after the second Thursday, you
just want

"day is Friday AND the day number is between 9 and 15".

But I've not found a schedule that can handle that.

That is another example of a conditional, x AND y.

LOL, in my working days I often did things exactly like that. Say had a

Re: [GNC] Schedule transaction for 2 Wednesday?

2023-03-11 Thread R Losey
Not necessarily; at my job, I had meetings on the first Thursday of each
month, and then the following Wednesday, and then the following Tuesday.
We never found any scheduling program that would allow it, but I did work
out a way to do it that did not involve conditions, per se.

The earliest the second Thursday can be is the 8th and the latest is the
14th, so if you want the Friday after the second Thursday, you just want
"day is Friday AND the day number is between 9 and 15".

But I've not found a schedule that can handle that.

Another way to handle that case would be to link it; create a dummy event
on the second Thursday, and then have the Friday event be scheduled in a
linked manner: it is one day after the dummy event. This would have worked
out well for our work meetings above; the first one was always on the first
Thursday; the second was always six days after that; and the third was
always six days after the second meeting. I think implementing this
'linking' or 'relative' solution would be more difficult than the first
option above.

You might want to remove that. See my reply of a couple of minutes ago.
Adrien is very knowledgeable, but in this case I think he missed the boat.

How do I know this feature is available? Because I use it. My Social
Security check comes the 4th Wednesday of each month, and I have a
scheduled transaction to record that. (I don't have an end date; instead
I just edit the amounts once a year.)

In the scheduled transaction editor, on the Frequency tab, select
Frequency: Monthly and Every _1_ months. Then click the drop-down arrow
for "On the" and scroll, scroll down till you get the options for 1st,
2nd, 3rd, 4th occurrence in each month of your chosen day of the week.
It's a very long list, so you have to scroll pretty far.

If the 1st is a Wednesday, then the 2nd W would be
the 8th.

But if the 1st was a Thursday, then the second

Six day late at the worst.

Hi Stan,

If the 1st is a Wednesday, then the 2nd W would be
the 8th.

But if the 1st was a Thursday, then the second
W would be the 13th, so picking the day of the
week is not helpful. So I picked the 14th.
Six day late at the worst.

But why pick a wrong date six times out of seven, when you have the
ability to pick the right date every time? You quoted my note, but it
looks like you didn't try the procedure that will give you exactly the
second Wednesday of the month, every month. Here it is again, slightly
edited:

In the scheduled transaction editor, on the Frequency tab, select
Frequency: Monthly and Every _1_ months. Then click the drop-down arrow
for "On the" and scroll, scroll down till you get the options for 1st,
2nd, 3rd, 4th occurrence in each month of your chosen day of the week.
It's a very long list, so you have to scroll pretty far.

How did you get it to select the 4th Wednesday?

You might want to remove that. See my reply of a couple of minutes ago.
Adrien is very knowledgeable, but in this case I think he missed the boat.

How do I know this feature is available? Because I use it. My Social
Security check comes the 4th Wednesday of each month, and I have a
scheduled transaction to record that. (I don't have an end date; instead
I just edit the amounts once a year.)

It could be that the feature was removed in newer versions of GC, but
that seems unlikely to me.

Hi David,

I did something similar to that. I set the
transaction to the 14th.

If the 1st is a Wednesday, then the 2nd W would be
the 8th.

But if the 1st was a Thursday, then the second
W would be the 13th, so picking the day of the
week is not helpful. This is why I picked
the 14th.

Thank you anyway for the reply!

2023-03-09 Thread David Reiser via gnucash-user
In the scheduled transaction editor, in the Frequency tab, in the box under the
Daily/weekly/monthly/yearly drop down menu there is a box where you can set
“Every {number} [time period]

on the next line, it says “On the” [drop down menu] “except on weekends”
[another drop down menu]

At the bottom of the long list in the first of those drop down menus, you can
choose 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th [pick a day of the week]

Re: [GNC] Schedule transaction for 2 Wednesday?

2023-03-09 Thread Adrien Monteleone

I don't think you can.

The closest method I can find is to set the first instance to the second
Wednesday then set frequency to 28 days, or 4 weeks.

But of course, that will sometimes fall on the first Wednesday.

The workaround there is to set it for remind and review without
auto-creation and adjust as needed.

Adrien
