HI,
Are you willing to share your data file? Or create a small data file
that shows the issue?
If neither is possible, could you create screen shots of all the registers
and the report, along with the account settings, report settings, and user
preferences?

[GNC] Reconciling credit card

2022-12-09 Thread Mahon Finbar

Hi,
I am sure this is explained somewhere, but I haven't been able to find a
simple explanation.

I have a register of transactions in an a/c called credit card.

I enter the data from the monthly statement, allocating them to various
expenses and enter the monthly payment from a bank account.

[In my naivety]?? I assumed that when I enter the monthly payment the
a/c will reflect the 'net' situation, i.e. the balance of current
transactions less the latest payment.

I seemed to be motoring along ok until a while ago when everything in
the balance column ended up -ve!!

Typically a se of entries looked like this -

but now it looks like this -

Obviously I have been doing something wrong or have created an error.

But what??

Probably entered either the payment or the purchases in the wrong column.

Purchases should be in the Credit column and payments from the bank
account should be in the Debit column. (That is, when you look at the
credit card a/c. Obviously the payment will be in the Credit column in
the bank a/c).

[GNC] Installing or updating Finance::Quote

2022-12-09 Thread aeg via gnucash-user
I've started this thread separately from "[GNC] getting price quotes" (from
which I gained helpful advice last week), as it's a more specific problem I now
face.
Following the advice from David H and others last week, I eventually decided to
upgrade from GC version 3.5 to 4.12, in the hope that it would automatically
install the latest version of Finance::Quote and enable me to resume
downloading stock prices again. I'm using Windows 10 and the previously
installed version of F::Q was 1.47, which had worked without problems until the
first week of November.
The upgrade to GC v4.12 turned out to be more straightforward than I'd
previously feared, but I then found that F::Q was still on 1.47, and attempts
to update or run "Install OnlinePrice Retrieval for Gnucash" from the Start
menu have been unsuccessful, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the
direction of a solution.
I should add that, prior to the GC update, I installed the latest version of
Strawberry Perl (v5.32.1), after first removing the previous version (v5.18.2).

Check your quote.pm file in C:\Strawberry\perl\site\lib\Finance and check the

 Murugan,

Thank you for your suggestion. There is no folder named "Finance" at that
location, but I searched for quote.pm within Strawberry and found it at each of
these locations:C:\Strawberry\cpan\build\Finance-Quote-1.5301-0\lib\Finance
(version 1.5301)
 C:\Strawberry\cpan\build\Finance-Quote-1.5301-1\lib\Finance (version 1.5301)
C:\Strawberry\perl\vendor\lib\Sub (version 2.006006)
C:\Strawberry\perl\vendor\lib\PPI\Token (version 1.270)

I don't know whether that helps to clarify the problem.

Re: [GNC] Transaction Report << offline >>

2022-12-09 Thread rovero
I solved my problem.
I created a new TYPE bank account named it expense.
Imported all my transactions from the TYPE A/payable account that was causing
my issue to the new TYPE bank account expense.
When I did the import the dollar amount import went in as a credit/withdraw.
Created transaction report with two accounts: My Type bank income and My Type
bank expense.
Set reverse option to credit accounts.
I now have all the transactions in the expense account that show as a negative
dollars and the total of them as a negative dollars.

I may not be using GNUCash the correct way but it works for my needs.
My intent was to set the two accounts sort of like a checking account.
All my deposits would go to income account and all my withdrawals would come
out of my expense account.
Since the expense account started with a zero balance it would always have a
negative balance that would continue to grow as transactions where added as
credit/withdrawal.
Since the income account started with a zero balance it would always have a
positive balance that would continue to grow as transactions where added as
debit/deposit.
The transaction report was to simply show all the expense transactions and all
the income transactions, and then to show the Grand Total as Income minus
Expense ( i.e balance)

Thanks Everyone For the help provided
Joe

Some fundamentals of double entry accounting.

Take a MUCH harder look at "Income Type Bank". Part of your problem is with the
"subtypes" being allowed (both by standard accounting and gnucash.

There are only three FUNDAMENTAL types, Asset, Liability, and Equity.
The other types will actually be under one of those. In this case you have A/P
and Bank. Bank would be under Assets. A/P under Liabilities.
Neither is of type Income or Expense.

When you purchased each item or otherwise incurred the expense that transaction
was a debit to the particular expense and a credit to A/P.
The normal balance of a liability is credit, so you were INCREASING pour
payables balance.

When you paid each of these using the bank card that was a debit to A/P
(reduces the temporary debt) and a credit to the bank account (reduces the bank
account balance). Nothing to do with any expenses, you bought with debt and
now you are paying that debt off (transfer between asset and liability)

Your choice to use +/1 as your senses rather than debit/credit.

Michael D Novack

PS -- please note, even if you are creating the payable and immediately paying
the bill in the logical sense still two transaction. Doing it in one means not
using A/P so will not show in A/P totals, which I assume is what you want. But
do note in a larger business, might be two people doing this, a "purchase clerk"
ordering things for the company and creating bills to be paid and somebody else
trusted with the company bank account doing the actual paying.

[GNC] Buying with PayPal - how do I split the transaction?

I have the following accounts, and am buying something in GBP.

I do not use the Business -> Vendor features to handle such
transactions, even for business expenses. If the funds are leaving my
possession as part of the payment, I do not see a reason to involve
Accounts Payable. So I follow this process:

Create a simple transaction with these accounts
*Asset Account:* Assets ->  Bank account
*Other Account:* Expenses -> Utilities -> Internet

...how can I modify the process so the account* Assets ->
PayPal -> GBP* account gets used?
If I am using Paypal, which keeps a zero balance, then as soon as I pay
for something with Paypal, Paypal funds that amount by charging my bank
account (or credit card, sometimes). I follow a process with two simple
transactions:

*Asset Account:* Assets ->  Paypal account -> GBP
*Expense Account:* Expenses -> Utilities -> Internet

*Asset Account:* Assets ->  Paypal account -> GBP
*Other Account:* Assets ->  Bank account

This means that the expense is recorded in the Expense Account, the
Paypal ledger has two matching transactions to reconcile against my
Paypal statement, and the Bank account ledger has a single transaction
to reconcile against the Bank statement.

Hope this helps!

There are literally dozens of IRC clients out there to choose from.

If you care about Matrix, then I suggest you contact them about it; it was
working before, so I'm sure they can make it work again. We have no
control over such third-party integrations.

While we do have a channel registered over at libera, it is not actively
monitored, logged, or maintained at this time, so using it is completely
at your own risk.

Re: [GNC] Transaction Report << offline >>

2022-12-09 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

I solved my problem.

I may not be using GNUCash the correct way but it works for my needs.
...

out of my expense account.
Since the expense account started with a zero balance it would always have a
negative balance that would continue to grow as transactions where added as
credit/withdrawal.

It is not so much using gnucash (in particular) the wrong way as not
doing double entry bookkeeping properly. It means that most helper folks
here will not be able to help you. We won't be able to answer questions
like the one with which you began "why is this negative?"

a) Using an app like gnucash to partially automate double entry
bookkeeping does not mean that you can skip learning the fundamentals of
double entry bookkeeping << those who learned the old way, pen and ink
on paper, first entering in the journal and then posting to the ledger
accounts will know what is being automated >>  You will be far better
off in the long run not skipping the "fundamentals".

b) Somebody like myself, having learned in the old days doing
bookkeeping by hand, can utilize gnucash in unorthodox ways. And I do
that sometimes. But I know how that will affect what report now means
what, etc.  Not to be recommended until you really know what you are doing.

Also, if one buys and sells multiple currencies, as I do, it saves on
currency conversion fees if one keeps USD and GBP separately.

I have not tried reconciling PayPal yet. That looks to be tricky, as you
can not go back and see the balance at some time in the past.

I would be interested to hear from others about this. I would rather not
put two entirely separate transactions - I thought splits was a way around
that, but I might be wrong.

Yes, it does. If nobody else comes up with another way, I will do two
transactions like you.

[GNC] URGENT: Fake gnucash website with fake download, most likely compromised file

2022-12-09 Thread Vincent Dawans
I just typed gnucash in google and the first hit was an ad pointing to
gnu-cash.org (with a dash). It is a fake site that is a carbon copy of the
official site but the download link goes to a setup.exe that is most likely
a corrupted virus file.

We need this removed ASAP. There is an option in google to report the site
and mark it as spam/phishing. I imagine if more people do this it will get
removed faster hopefully.

Re: [GNC] Installing or updating Finance::Quote

2022-12-09 Thread Geoff

Hi Alan

It looks like the install has failed for some reason as the modules
should be under: C:\Strawberry\perl\site\lib\Finance\

The entries under "perl\vendor" are not related to Finance::Quote and
are irrelevant.

I suggest that you try to install it again. The installation can be a
bit fiddly as there are a number of dependencies, and some modules take
a while.

You can do this with the GnuCash installer. Open a command prompt as
administrator and type:-

perl C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnc-fq-update

Or directly by downloading from here:-
https://metacpan.org/pod/Finance::Quote

Good luck!

C:\Strawberry\perl\vendor\lib\Sub (version 2.006006)

I don't know whether that helps to clarify the problem.

Subject: [GNC] Installing or updating Finance::Quote I've started this thread separately
from "[GNC] getting price quotes" (from which I gained helpful advice last
week), as it's a more specific problem I now face.
The upgrade to GC v4.12 turned out to be more straightforward than I'd previously feared,
but I then found that F::Q was still on 1.47, and attempts to update or run "Install
OnlinePrice Retrieval for Gnucash" from the Start menu have been unsuccessful, so
I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of a solution.
I should add that, prior to the GC update, I installed the latest version of
Strawberry Perl (v5.32.1), after first removing the previous version (v5.18.2).
Regards,Alan

Precision: the link to the fake site reported below is actually
https://gnu-cash.org/main.php -- you need the full page link to see the

I don't see that ad when I search Google for gnucash; when I type

Not that there would be anything we could do about it if it did exist.

Re: [GNC] Buying with PayPal - how do I split the transaction?

2022-12-09 Thread David Cousens
David

I treat my Paypal account as a Liability account, just as you would treat
purchases with a credit card. Mine is linked to a bank account from which funds
are automatically transferred to keep the balance in the PayPal account at 0. (
I no longer accept payments through it and only use it for purchases). I also
don't use the business features anymore.

To use the business features, so you have the vendor record, I would have a
separate PayPal Liability account. On purchase record the bill to credit
Accounts payable and debit the appropriate expense account as normal. To record
PayPal paying the vendor, debit the Accounts Payable and credit the Paypal
Liability, essential make a payment from the Paypal Liability account. I don't
know if the account checking on the business features payment process will
prevent this or not.

Then to record the transfer of funds from your bank account to Paypal credit the
bank account and debit the Paypal liability account.

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] URGENT: Fake gnucash website with fake download, most likely compromised file

2022-12-09 Thread Vincent Dawans
You need to go to the main.php page link to see the fake site. Full link is
https://gnu-cash.org/main.php or possibly https://www.gnu-cash.org/main.php

Google ads are location and search history dependent so might not show up
everywhere.

Google has a separate tool to report phishing sites. But make sure you
report the whole URL with the main.php
https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/?hl=en

That said the https://gnu-cash.org/main.php doesn't seem to work in
incognito mode nor on microsft edge. Only on regular chrome does it open. I
don't have another browser installed so can't test/

OK sorry for the flood of email but as of 4:05PM US Pacific time the ad is

Re: [GNC] URGENT: Fake gnucash website with fake download, most likely compromised file

2022-12-09 Thread John Ralls
And for that page I get a completely blank page. I tried Safari, Firefox, and
Chrome on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

I tried searching Google for gnu-cash, with the hyphen, and did see the ad, but
clicking its link just took me to that Dot Com Inovations page.

Thanks Vincent. If you could upload the file to virustotal that would help

[GNC] Overflow menus in invoices/bills not working in latest release on MacOS Ventura

2022-12-09 Thread R. Victor Klassen
I’ve not poked at it very long, but what I’m experiencing is if the window
isn’t wide enough (my normal practice) there appears a menu on the right of the
toolbar with (typically) one or more of Post, Unpost, Pay - possibly more.
Normal behaviour is that I can select any of these by pulling down on this
menu. What I’m seeing is that the menu appears (with the little triangle), and
I can pull down the menu, but the items in the menu don’t get shaded, and
clicking on them only causes the menu to disappear. This may be the case when
not using invoices/bills, but I generally keep the window wide enough to avoid
running out of icon space. (I’m currently at home and can’t test this without
upgrading the OS on my personal machine, which isn’t an M1 anyhow, so it
wouldn’t be a perfect reproduction).

There was a recent thread about having to click more than once for some things
to work, and I’m wondering whether this is just another manifestation of the
same thing.

I just installed the latest version of GnuCash on a shiny new Mac (M1 chip),
with the latest version of OSX (13, Ventura).

OK, while you HAVE a "Paypal Account" it appears that in this case
Paypal is being used just as an agent << not unlike when I purchase

So your transaction could simply be debit the expense and credit the

However, I do NOT understand why you were treating your Paypal account
as a liability. AFAIK, Paypal does not offer credit. Look, people can
make on-line purchases with a credit card but also often with a debit
card. The former is a liability account, the latter is not. This sort of
thing is not "by company". This we would think of VISA as a credit card

Re: [GNC] Buying with PayPal - how do I split the transaction?

2022-12-09 Thread David Cousens
Michael

You are right but I just find it convenient to reconcile the Paypal account
against my statement from them and my bank account against the statement from
the bank, rather than having to find the payments to Paypal
in my bank account records. I could just as easily use an asset account with
reversed debit credits of course. My bank account records don't have a
description of the purchase whereas the Paypal records do. Makes it easier to
select the appropriate expense account to assign a particular purchase. The
additional work in maintaining the Paypal account offsets any extra work in
having to match the amounts in the bank records to receipts to identify the
appropriate expense account.

I was assuming David Kirby was wanting to use the business features to maintain
a trail to the vendors

Re: [GNC] Overflow menus in invoices/bills not working in latest release on MacOS Ventura

2022-12-09 Thread john
Um, on macOS there aren't supposed to be menus on the window, they go on the
menubar at the top of the screen. If it's too wide macOS is supposed to make
room for it by hiding as many of the "menubar extra" icons on the right side.

So is there somewhere that I've missed setting up the integration to put the
menus on the menubar or are you using a self-built GnuCash?

Re: [GNC] Overflow menus in invoices/bills not working in latest release on MacOS Ventura

2022-12-09 Thread Adrien Monteleone

John,

It sounds like Victor is describing the ToolBar overflow 'menu'.

I can get this menu when I narrow my window width such that icons would
be 'off window' to the right.

But I can't reproduce the behavior described. My overflow entries appear
to work properly. (4.12 on Monterey)

Regards,
Adrien
