[Goanet]Book planned on Goa... in Canada

2004-03-14 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
This sounds exciting. Goanetter Tony Fernandes (ex-St Anthony's, Monte
de Guirim) has been putting the finishing touches to his forthcoming
publication of a poetry book entitled Goa - Memories of My Homeland (23
English narrative poems, five English short stories, 150 Konkani
Proverbs, drawings, photographs and a short glossary of Konkani, Portuguese
and Konkani words used in the book).

Says Tony: At the moment it is with the publishers/printers in
Ontario, Canada. Should be ready and out in the first week of April 2004.

He can be contacted at Tony Fernandes tonferns at hotmail.com

[Goanet]Abbe Faria statue in Panjim

2004-03-14 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Anyone knows when the Abbe Faria statue went up in Panjim, and the name of
the 'praca' outside the secretariat was named after him? Was there any
political agenda in assuaging Goan sentiment at that point of time? Just
wondering... FN

[Goanet]Latest Parallel Elections News - President's Rule imminent

2004-03-14 Thread Cecil Pinto
Vivian has resigned from the CEC Hard Core Committee and has been appointed
the Governor of GoaNet by President Pandurang. In a typical
scratch-your-back reaction Governor Vivian has threatened President's Rule
on GoaNet if less than 10% of subscribers qualify to vote by posting
something before 31st March 2004.

In his maiden gubernatorial speech Governor Vivian started of with Dho
Polla. To which everyone in the know replied with Dow Podla except for
Merwyn who checked the Dow Jones index on JoeUK's WAP enabled mobile. For
those who came in late Merwyn's makes his livelihood from 'removing phurs'
from Canadian Tyres. After he has removed the phur (puncture) an even
bigger phur remains, thus he is never unemployed.

Vivian a former garden variety politician spoke about how we should
cultivate more Mangos, Tamarinds and Cashews. He managed to get in some
publicity for his brother-in-law Shenzi's Caju Feni. Opposition benches are
questioning how Shenzi Feni Pvt. Ltd was waived a loan repayment of Rs. 67
lakhs by the EDC and how the GoaNet Admin Team allowed some people to
blatantly publicise their commercial products while not allowing others.

Gabe has resigned from the CEC Hardcore Committee and has taken up a job as
an editorial consultant for a local publication. He admits he is not very
conversant with Konkani having been with Stella for so many years, But I
am making an effort to re-learn the language of my ancestors.. Some East
Efrican GoaNetters quarters feel that Gabe is 'na faraii wazimu'.

Seb has resigned from the CEC Hard Core Committee and formed the Silent
GoaNetters Party (SGP). Said Seb, I speak on behalf of all silent
GoaNetters. I don't see why they have to post before March 31st to vote. I
oppose this unilaterine decision of the Chief Election Commissioner. In
fact many of my party members have complained to me that they have been
unsubscribed recently because their mail bounced. This is proof that the
ruling coterie is trying to eliminate voters names from the rolls.

--- excerpt from Interview with Seb. ---

Gabe: What led to the differences between you and the CEC?
Seb: He has the mental age of an 18 year old.
Gabe: How many members do you have in your party?
Seb: As of today 4927.
Gabe: Can you have a show of strength?
Seb: No, but I can light some fireworks if you like.
Gabe: Why don't your members speak up?
Seb: They are silent. I speak on their behalf.
Gabe: Can we at least see them?
Seb: They are faceless too.
 end of excerpt ---

President Pandurang is currently in Shirdona attending a koino-bal
tournament. This is the first time in 14 years that Chimbel has played
Shirdona on their home grounds.

--- excerpt from interview with President Pandurang during koino-bal match

Gab: How is the game going your Excellency
Pres.: Marli sheni tanchi!!
Gabe: You are referring to recently appointed Governor Shenzi of GoaNet?
Pres: Sheboi!! Sheboi!!
Gabe: Any comments on the EDC scam Sir?
Pres.: Fodat tanchem! Koloi ghal netan!
Gabe: Your Honour what about Chibel-Shirdona relations?
Pres: All my relations have got tickets.
Gabe: You are referring to tickets to the koino-bal match?
Pres: Na re papya! Election party tickets.
Gabe: Would you be sad if Chimbel lost today?
Pres: SOB! SOB! SOB!

---end of excerpt ---

Stay tuned.

[Goanet]Goa's Open Secret

2004-03-14 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Goa's Open Secret

Gilbert Lawrence:
Hi Fred:
Nice to hear from you. I think your last post on this subject was about
some Goans being defensive about their (inquisition) history. To which
my humble response was that the defensiveness was on the part of the
Goan writers who are unaware of the exact (details of) history and their
texts. So here is their opportunity to shine and further expand on their
journalism, web pages and 'research'.

As you have seen on this thread, there have been a lot of statements and
clichés on the inquisition in Goa with SURPRISINGLY very little facts
and data to back it up. So what will it take to appeal to these
individuals who have used the Goa Net and Goan cyberspace to 'lagao
bhathi' and post their statistics to back-up their statements? Do you
think a financial award will encourage our Khoro-Niz Goenkars to write
some facts instead of fiction?:=))

I appreciate the statement that Goan journo don't have any special
authority on this subject. Perhaps true! But if they write newspaper
articles and help others write their web page or ads on a subject; they
should have the skill to ask the hard questions prior to 'putting their
pen' to their writings. Nothing should stop a Goan journo (with an
inquiring mind) to respond to articles written by others about their own
history.

Frederick Noronha:
I don't think the web and email queries can play the role of replacing
serious research, as would be needed if serious about a topic such as
this. Secondly, I don't think journalists would have any special skills
to
speak with authority on a subject such as this... unless the rare journo

actually specialised in this topic (I don't know of any). FN

[Goanet]RE: Inquisition

2004-03-14 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Subject: Inquisition

Mervyn:
I always get scared when a 'religious' man quotes his religious book,
saying 'this land was given to us by God.' God is not in the business of
giving and taking away land. Historically, it's always been that the
strong take
away the land from the weak. BTW, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya nailed it down
perfectly when he said: When the missionaries arrived, they had the
Bible and we had the land. Today, it's the opposite.

Gilbert responds:
Who gets the land is not the religion but the one with the bayonet, gun,
etc. In Africa (like else where) who got the land were not the
missionaries but the soldiers and their sponsored relatives who
immigrated to the new lands and perhaps produced more soldiers.

[Goanet]AI, IA airfare to Gulf exhorbitant: Minister

2004-03-14 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
AI, IA airfare to Gulf exhorbitant: Minister

PTI [SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 2004]

DUBAI : Slamming national carriers Air India and
Indian Airlines for allegedly fleecing passengers in
the Gulf, visiting Kerala minister for information,
culture and NRIs said his state will join hands with
Punjab and Andhra Pradesh to take up the issue with
the Centre.

Punjab sends a large number of people to the Gulf
and so do other states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil
Nadu. As the high airfare is not an issue affecting
only Kerala anymore, it is advisable to make a joint
effort provided the state Cabinet approves it, M M
Hassan told in a meeting organised by the Indian Media
Forum here on Saturday evening.

Hassan said the state will urge the Centre to open up
the skies in the Gulf sector too as it has done in the
far eastern and Sri Lanka sector.

Though the state had scrapped air turbine fuel tax for
international carriers, AI and the IA have not passed
the benefit to the passengers in full, he said.

Two businessmen, M B R Shetty who has set up a
pharmaceutical sector in Abu Dhabi as a joint venture
with UAE and M Yusuf Ali, a major shareholder in the
Kochi International Airport voiced support for
slashing the airfare.

[Goanet]Jews in India.

2004-03-14 Thread Miguel Braganza
I was happy to read the contribution of Jews to the development of India.
Thank you Fred, for posting this item:
Many Indian Jews have reached great prominence. For example, the
Sassons after whom the Sasson docks, the Sasson hospital, and two of
Mumbais well known sites- the Jacob Circle, and Flora Fountain have
been named. In the past years, there has been a Jewish mayor of Bombay
(Dr. E. Moses), and a Jewish Chief of the Navy. In the Indian Army,
Jews have reached very high posts.

A General Jacobs, now the Governor of Goa, supervised the surrender of the
Pakistani Army in the Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. Maj. Gen. Samson who
was awarded the
Padma Bhushan, and a few other Jews reached prominence in the Indian
Army.

Two of India's leading literary personalities, poet Nissim Ezeickel, and
cartoonist Abu Abraham are Jewish. Also the late famousHindi film actor
David, and the late Sulochana the Queen of Indian Silent Films, and the
actress/dancer Helen.

A Dr. Erulkar was the personal physician/friend of Mahatma Gandhi. His
father, also a Dr.Abraham Erulkar, donated land for the synagogue in
Ahmedabad, Gujrat. Dr. Erulkar's daughter is currently the 1st lady of
Cyprus, married to the President of Cyprus. Another prominent Indian Jew is
Dr. Jerusha Jhirad, who was given the title of Padma Shri by the
Government of India.

A good book on this subject is Nathan Katz's Who Are the Jews of
India?. University of California Press, November 2000. Hardcover.

If we have the Madei and Netravali Wild Life Sanctuaries in Goa, we have to
thank Lt.Gen.(Retd.)J.F.R. Jacob who had the courage and the wisdom to
notify them during the brief spell of President's Rule in Goa. No political
party would ever be able to do it. They are not even able to undo it, united
though they might be to help the mining lobby and their vote banks. We have
to be thankful that the BJP under Parrikar has been able to distance itself
from the mining lobby a bit...at least on this issue. I hope the BJP will
also distance itself from the programmes of the mining companies at which
they distribute peanuts[ like Rs.550/- per household] as compensation for
damage caused by dust pollution. We are Goans, not monkeys. Let the mine
owners eat peanut butter if they like. They should not feed their neighbours
peanuts.

In the meanwhile let us protect our Green Heritage, our rivers, our dinking
water sources and our right to live with dignity.Half the money spent on the
Tillari irrigation project could be better spent on protecting the Madei[
Maha Devi or Maa Devi] River form mining rejects, deforestation and laterite
rubble extraction. It does not just feed the River Mandovi; it sustains life
in Sattari, Ponda and even Panaji city , that is fed from the water at Opa.

Viva Goa.

[Goanet]Politics and helmets

2004-03-14 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear netters,
While the traffic cops are going soft on the 'helmet rule', it was
heartening to read that a young MLA from Margao was seen wearing a helmet
while watching a bullfight at dawn in Benaulim recently. Rding with a helmet
is legal, watching an organized bullfight, with or without helmet, is illegal.
Assuni re! ani mog assum.

Can't put my finger on the archives, but I remember reading that Adv.Aires
had once joined the BJP. This morning at a PMCA meeting on IFFI and the
four-laning, Adv. Aires denied it and I tendered an apology if I had
blundered. Had I really? It is possible.

To me IFFI and four-laning of the Patto to Dona Paula road are two issues. I
am in favour of the former. I do not see any reason why someone wants to go
in a hurry to Mira-mar or Dona Paula.unless s/he is on a day's holiday
in Goa and is missing the sunset over the Arabian Sea! Any helmet rule for
the tourists is converted into a 'hafta' [ you 'have to' give]as easily as
banking is converted into 'hawala'. And politicians feed us on 'hawa'.

'Promises and pie crusts are meant to be broken.' That is ancient wisdom. We
do not live forever,anyway.

Viva Goa.

[Goanet]National Football League: Dempo hold East Bengal goalless

2004-03-14 Thread Eustaquio Santimano
Dempo hold East Bengal goalless
Last Updated: March 14, 2004 19:12 IST
East Bengal paid for missed chances and ill luck to finish goalless
against Dempo Sports Club, Goa in the clash between the two title
aspirants in the eighth National Football League match in Kolkata on Sunday.

The city giants, who missed Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior, sitting
out with a red card, dominated the proceedings for most part of the game
and created chances galore but failed to convert any, much to the dismay
of the sizeable crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium.

The defending champions, however, maintained their standings at the top
with 31 points from 15 matches and their three-point margin with the
second placed Goans, who now have 28 points.

Dempo, who had won the first leg tie 3-2, took the early initiatives and
wrested midfield control to keep the hosts under pressure but failed to
create positive chances during the first 20 minutes.

East Bengal, on the other hand, launched their maiden foray only in the
24th minute before sweeping across the rival defence with waves of
attacks during next 10 minutes, when they bagged four corners and wasted
three scoring chances.

Sur Kumar Singh set the tone for his side with fast overlaps down the
right to feed Baichung Bhutia, Alvito D'Cunha and Mike Okoro with
accurate crosses, but none were able to translate the chances into goals.

With the match heading for a draw, East Bengal made a last ditch effort
towards the end but proved distinctly unlucky when Okoro's deflection
off a substitute Bijen Singh corner hit the post minutes before the long
whistle.

Earlier, Bhutia, fed by a Sur Kumar centre from the right, headed
straight to rival goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal from handshaking distance in
the 28th minute.

In the next few minutes, D'Cunha's shot from close and narrowly missed
the target while Okoro's goal-bound attempt was nullified by Mondal in
brilliant fashion.

But, the easiest of the chances came and went abegging in the 43rd
minute. Mahesh Gawli, picked up from defence for the midfield, carried
out a combination with Douglas da Silva and Debjit Ghosh before getting
the ball unmarked inside the box.

With the rival custodian at his mercy, Gawli had enough time and space
to convert the chance but failed to trap the ball well before making an
weak attempt that did not bear fruit.

Dempo, despite their early aggression, could not open the East Bengal
goalmouth and could only make some hopeful attempts that lacked
precision or substance.

Liberian striker Sunday Seah put up an unimpressive display and came to
the reckoning in the 41st minute when his header inched out over the
cross-piece.

East Bengal's substitute goalkeeper Sandip Nandy, who came in place of
injured Sangram Mukherjee, caused some tension for his side in the 87th
minute as he misgripped an Alex Ambrose shot, but the ball crossed the
goalline for a corner.

East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick expressed his resentment over the
missed opportunities but said he was happy with the overall performance
of his wards.

[Goanet-news]AMAZING GOA: Konkani verse, Baroque, Olympics, 15+ kids, Boca de Vaca

2004-03-14 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
THIS IS from Jose F P Lourenco's *Amazing Goa* set of cards. Jose dipped
into my home-collection of Goa-related books a bit, to scour for some
amazing facts. Incidentally, my Goa-books collection used to be
600-strong, when I stopped counting about a decade back. But I know at
least one Goanetter who has three times that size a collection. Guess who?
Dunno if I'm allowed to spill the beans on this; we Goans can be notorious
book-borrowers...

While on this note, I would like to encourage every reader to collect
books on Goa. It not only builds our own awareness, helps us understand
our home more deeper, but also helps to encourage the writer. While
wishing my friend and ex-colleague Tony Martin well with his Goan
international writers plan, one initiative could be to make Goa books
available via networks like Project Gutenberg (http://gutenberg.net),
thus making them available to posterity... In the last two months, we
managed putting up two books there. Volunteers needed to identify
interesting copyright-expired books, or even new titles, where the author
is willing to also make the same available in public domain. FN

[Goanet]AMAZING GOA: Konkani verse, Baroque, Olympics, 15+ kids, Boca de Vaca

FN

[Goanet]SFX: Spain seeking to recover its Saint

2004-03-14 Thread Teotonio R. de Souza
Last week's EXPRESSO weely of Lisbon had it on p.22 that Portugal loses its
saint for Spain, referring to the forthcoming plans for commemorating 500
years of the birth of St. Francis Xavier. Spain is planning large-scale
commemorations of its Navarra-born saint, while there seem to be no clear
ideias yet about anything of that sort happening in Portugal. Is it likely
that Goans who are in direct physical contact with the basque saint, and
particularly the Jesuit Historical Institute named after him, will have some
major plans? Incidentally, the late Jesuit Bishop of Ahmedabad Charles Gomes
(Moira-born and formerly Provincial of Goa-Pune Jesuits) has suggested that
the old coffin of St. Francis Xavier (where the body was preserved till 1744
or so) be donated to the home town of the saint. The Archbishop of Navarra
and and the Rector of the Castle of Xavier had made a request to this effect
in 1976. The Archbishop of Goa and the Jesuits had expressed no objection,
and even thought it would be a fair exchange, for Navarra letting Goa keep
its Saint. The coffin is a simple pine chest of 1.65 x 0.40 x 0.55 covered
with rich damascus tissue with silver linings. Golden ribbon tissue lines
the border and the corners of the chest. From what I know, the request was
submitted to the Home Ministry of India, and after obtaining the views of
the Goa Government, it decided on May 31, 1977: The matter has been
considered in consultation with the Archeological Survey of India. The
coffin is not only an antiquity but also an object of veneration amongst the
Christian population of India. Therefore, the Archaeological Survey of India
do not favour its export. Arrangements for suitable display of the coffin
within the country are under consideration.

To the best of my knowledge, while I was commissioned by the Archbishop to
prepare an inventory of objects to be displayed at the Rachol Museum of
Sacred Art, I had an opportunity of seeing closely the coffin in question,
but it was not included in the list for transfer to the Museum (now shifted
to Santa Monica). I wonder where and when it will be suitably displayed.

Re: [Goanet]Hair-splitting Portuguese

2004-03-14 Thread Helga do Rosario Gomes
Oh brother you are in big trouble! Why do you want to know how to say I
love you' in Portuguese and in so many ways? Seems like you have not learnt
anything from the 'Ogling Goan women' discussion. Now it appears that you
are specially targeting the 1.457% of the Goan girls whose parents speak
substandard Portuguese as some present day Camões pointed out.
Like you I too thought that Teotonio was an internationally respected
historian as well as a professor in Portugal. As for being a linguist his
Professor once commented to me that it was his fluency in both languages
(Portuguese and English) that gave him an edge. But it seems he did not know
that like subatomic particles the verb 'casar' (which I very cautiously
translate as 'to marry') has many forms so maybe its time for all of us to
brush up on quantum physics.
Now you be good RKN

Since we're at it, could anyone tell me how to say I love you in
Portuguese (a man to a woman/ a woman to man and the same sex).

 Thanx regards, RKN

Parrikar pledges website on IFFI
-
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that all information
on the International Film Festival India (IFFI), to be held in December,
would be made available on a website. He said this during a press briefing,
in which the chief minister flayed a Panjim based NGO for making a
hue and cry that no information was being released by the government
on the IFFI.
The chief minister said that even though the group has been informed
about the proposed website which would be launched by next week,
the group still had plans to organise a meet in the city on Sunday,
prior to the launch, so as to take credit for rallying behind the issue
after the website was commissioned.
The Chief Minister reiterated that at any given time he was ready to
furnish any information on IFFI.
The chief minister also flayed NGOs in general saying, They should
explain their conduct first and be transparent and submit their accounts.

[Goanet]reuters.co.uk - Spain says al Qaeda claims bomb blasts - Sun 14 March, 2004 03:58 AM

2004-03-14 Thread Gabe Menezes
Reuters News Article

Spain says al Qaeda claims bomb blasts
Sun 14 March, 2004 03:58 AM

By Adrian Croft and Emma Ross-Thomas
MADRID (Reuters) - A purported spokesman for al Qaeda has claimed
responsibility in a videotaped statement for a wave of bomb attacks in
Madrid that killed 200 people, overshadowing Spain's general elections.
Hours earlier, Interior Minister Angel Acebes announced that five people,
including some with possible links to Moroccan militants, had been arrested
in the first breakthrough in the investigation of Thursday's
near-simultaneous attacks on four commuter trains which also injured 1,500
people.
If al Qaeda involvement is confirmed, it would be the first time the Islamic
militant group has struck in the West since the attacks on New York and
Washington on September 11, 2001.
Under outgoing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, Spain has been a close ally
of the United States, firmly supporting U.S. policy on Iraq and sending
1,300 troops there after the war.
The claim of responsibility came in the videotape recovered by Spanish
police from a waste paper bin on the outskirts of Madrid after a television
station received a call saying the tape was there.
On the tape, a man speaking in Moroccan-accented Arabic says al Qaeda
launched the attacks in retaliation for Spanish cooperation with the United
States and its allies.
If you don't stop your injustices, more blood will flow and these attacks
are very little compared with what may happen with what you call terrorism,
the man said, according to a Spanish transcript provided by the Interior
Ministry on Sunday.
The statement referred specifically to Iraq and Afghanistan, both countries
where Spain has sent troops to keep the peace.
MILITARY SPOKESMAN
The man noted that the Madrid blasts came exactly two-and-a-half years after
the September 11 attacks.
He makes the statement in the name of someone claiming to be the military
spokesman of al Qaeda in Europe, Abu Dujan al Afgani, Acebes told a news
conference.
Acebes said the name was not known to intelligence services and that
investigators were examining the tape's authenticity.
The Interior Ministry did not release the video itself. Acebes said the man
speaking on it wore Arab dress and had his face uncovered. At an earlier
news conference Acebes said investigators had found no evidence of suicide
bombers.
The video was released after thousands of anti-government protesters took to
the streets across Spain on Saturday night demanding to know the truth
behind the rail bombs, denouncing the ruling Popular Party (PP), and
shouting slogans like Don't Manipulate Our Dead!
The latest developments call into question the Spanish government's initial
insistence that armed Basque separatist group ETA was the prime suspect
behind the bombs. Acebes said on Saturday evening both lines of
investigation remained open.
Al Qaeda's purported involvement throws uncertainty into Spain's election on
Sunday when 32.6 million people have the right to vote. Polls open at 8:00
a.m..
Opinion polls taken before Thursday's bombings had all indicated that the
ruling centre-right PP would win most votes, but not necessarily retain its
absolute majority.
UNCERTAIN IMPACT ON ELECTION
Aznar, in power since 1996, is not seeking re-election. His hand-picked
heir, former deputy prime minister Mariano Rajoy, is pitted against Jose
Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, leader of the main opposition Socialist party.
Political analysts said the PP stood to win votes if the culprits were ETA,
because it had campaigned on its hardline stance against the armed Basque
group.
The effect of al Qaeda's purported involvement is more uncertain because
voters might see the attacks as the price for the government's domestically
unpopular support of the Iraq war.
A proven al Qaeda link would also have huge global security implications.
The third front has been opened. We've had America. We've had Western
interests in the Third World, and now we've had Europe, said Tim Ripley,
research associate at Centre of Defence and International Security Studies,
University of Lancaster in Britain.
Acebes announced on Saturday that Spanish authorities had arrested three
Moroccans and two Indians, possibly with ties to Moroccan militants, in
connection with the bombings.
An Arabic language audio tape, together with detonators, was found on
Thursday in a van parked near the Alcala de Henares station where three of
the four bombed trains originated.
Private radio station Cadena Ser, quoting sources close to the
investigation, said the audio tape probably came from Egypt. There was no
official confirmation.
Investigators believe mobile phones were used to detonate 10 bombs hidden in
backpacks on the four trains.
Those arrested on Saturday were suspected of being involved in the sale and
falsification of a mobile phone and SIM card found in an unexploded bomb on
one of the trains, Acebes said.
More than 5,000 people protested outside PP headquarters in Madrid for

About Young Goan Writers' International Workshop Objectives

The Young Goan Writers' International Workshop seeks to...
To create awareness about Goan writers across the
globe among Goan writers back home and vice versa.
Facilitate healthy discussion among Goan Writers on
vital Goan issues

To self-publish and promote books by Goan writers
among Goans across the globe

Help needy children in the community to discover the
magic of reading and owning books.

To set up volunteer-driven, self-sustaining,
community-based Writers' Clubs consisting of a core
group of students, parents and teachers in rural
areas. (Local people can best identify the strength
and local needs of the community)

To set up an international Book Bank to make the right
books easily accessible to children and others free of
cost or at nominal rates. (Access to the right kind of
books is essential for reading development)
To establish strong community-based resource
programmes for low-income children at local level.

-

Self Publishing: The writer himself pays for the
publishing of his book. And the Goan Writers'
International Workshop does a review of the book and
gives it due publicity on the forum. The books could
be printed and distributed from Goa to make it more
viable.

An International Book Bank: Who the book bank gives
what type of books, how, why and when needs to be
worked out by a team of the Workshop.

Funding: Philanthropic, corporate and member support
Ways to donate: Online or by mail

Addressing a Press Conference with the Chief Election Commissioner
President Pandurang said, You show me where are the 5,200

President Pandurang said only that bank managers are SOBs because

[Goanet]Caju Feni, Mangoes and Tamarind............

2004-03-14 Thread Vivian D'Souza
The ones who are in the know, say that Cashews,
Mangoes and Tamarind will be in short supply this year
because Dho polla or heavy dew during the flowering
season has damaged the blossoms and fewer fruits have
resulted.

Since there is bound to be a run on Caju Feni this
year I am getting my hands on every bottle that I can
find, and brewing some of my own Caju Feni to hoard it
and sell it at a premium. Remember the label Shenzi
Feni which is bound to make you wazimu (kiswahili
for happy) and you can be assured that you are getting
the best.

Rumor has it that Rene and Merwyn are organizing an
International Goan Convention in Goa in
December 2004 to coincide with our Goemcho Saibhacho
Dis, and the International Film Festival. I hope I can
be appointed the exclusive supplier of Feni for this
glorious event which will rival the Vishwa Gomantak
Sammelan or NRI Goan Conference.

Remember no party in Goa is complete and there cannot
be good times without SHENZI FENI
Sauud !!

 Vivian

[Goanet]Hair-splitting!

2004-03-14 Thread Radhakrishnan Nair
Hi, Helga!

Thanx for putting that Portuguese dialogue back on the rails!

Btw, my impression was that Dr Teotonia has never claimed to be a linguist
specialising in the Portuguese language. If I'm not mistaken, he's a
historian of international repute.

Since we're at it, could anyone tell me how to say I love you in
Portuguese (a man to a woman/ a woman to man and the same sex).

Thanx regards, RKN
