[Goanet]wrong facts in gomantak times sports page

2005-07-01 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Sub: Leander Paes from Velim ?

Sir,

It is strange to read that Zena costa gomantak times correspondent/
Reporter/ free lancer has written an article wherein she Zena Costa has
referred to the son of Assolna as hailing from Tollecanto Velim- the great
Leander Paes.

For information Asolna and Velim are two separate villages and the group of
four villages of Assolna , Velim, Cuncolim and Chinchinim are refereed to as
AVCC .

From where she got her facts, from Leander Paes or from her own imagination.
we leave it to you to judge for yourself.

Leander father hails from bainfoll Assolna, the great Vece paes. Leander paes
of the record has gone on record publicly that he is not a goan but a Bengali.

The Reason he stated was that he was born and brought up in Bengal and that he
had no connection with Goa.

So why hype up a Bengali boy of Goan origin as goenkar and assolna connection
distorted for ( an imaginative Velim ) connection

Judge for your self.
The above mentioned Zena costa has also hype up an mangoleran lad -- hockey
goalkeeper Adriano D’souza as a Goan.

Can you tell me from which part of Goa, does his family hail from.

I am throwing an open challenge to you, to prove me wrong.

Another fact that I as a regular reader would like to point out is that the
Cuncolim resident alex Vaz has been published as a resident of Ribandar by the
Zena costa.

Why such half baked facts ? Zena costa
The credibility of your sports desk of gomantak times is getting a beating
from such irresponsible reporting

2005-07-01 Thread Cajetan Rego
Dr. Barad,

I agree with most of your views except one. You say that Goans will be given
altu faltu jobs. What do business establishments stand to gain by doing this?
Are educated Goans not employed outside Goa?. It is unlikely that a software
engineer will be asked to become a security guard.

I don't think it should matter whether the industries that start in Goa are
Goan or non-Goan, as long as they provide job opportunities to goans. With a
lot of industries around, at least goans will not have to migrate to other
states.

Also, think of how many goans are enterprising enough to start businesses. If
non-goan companies are going to provide jobs to goans and pay taxes to the
govt, I don't think they will be a burden on the state exchequer.

[Goanet]Re: Victor Rangel Riebeiro's postings...........

2005-07-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear Bosco, Vivian, and Gabe,

I don't for a moment believe that there is any personal reason why my emails
are sometimes blocked on Goanet. I have repeatedly been told that the reason
they are initially blocked is because they are not sent out in Plain Text.

I have tried to comply with this ruling, and tried to send them out in Plain
Text. So far, I have not been able to do that on AOL. Now two of you, Bosco
and Gabe, have suggested ways in which I should be able to do this.

For now, I have had to interrupt my AOL session and switch to Yahoo, to be
sure that this response goes through.

While I appreciate your helpful advice, Bosco and Gabe, both of you have
sidestepped the question I posed: I belong to other groups, SASIALIT (South
Asian Literature) and Africa-Orientalia among them. Some of my emails to them
are exceptionally long, running to two pages sometimes, because of the nature
of the topics being discussed; I do not send them in Plain Text but the way I
send emails to Goanet. Yet---the moderators and administrators on those sites
do not complain that the posts use up unnecessary bandwidth, or demand that
I post in Plain Text.

Why, I wonder? What is different about those sites, that allows them to
accept postings that Goanet cannot cope with? Is there a different way in
which Goanet can function, that will help a number of others who also find
themselves in my position? Has Goanet's administration looked into this
possibility?

 Best regards,
 Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

[Goanet]FOLLOW UP TO DIPSTICK POLL

2005-07-01 Thread Philip Thomas
I thank the goanetter who suggested a poll on Goa's vexatious aviation scene
and goanet admin for implementing it. Over 90% of those participating seem
to want the Navy to pull out of Dabolim to allow the facility to flower as a
civilian airport. Good!

From the results so far it strikes me that a follow up poll might also be of
interest and use. It could focus on the how of thing i.e. how to get the
Navy out? The options could be 1) central govt pressure 2) state govt
pressure 3) judicial action or 4) media blitz.

Re: [Goanet]The Old Witch

A recant and repent story; this is not a tale for benefit of De Goveia:-

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4640773.stm

Mr Kissinger now says Indira Gandhi was a 'great leader'
Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has expressed regret over
anti-India comments he made to former US President Richard Nixon.
The Indians are bastards, Mr Kissinger said shortly before the
India-Pakistan war of 1971, it was revealed this week.
Mr Kissinger also called former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi a
bitch during the conversation.
At the time, the US saw India as too close to the Soviet Union.
The conversation was revealed in documents the US State Department
declassified this month on US foreign policy of the time.
According to the documents, President Nixon called Indira Gandhi an
old witch in a conversation with Mr Kissinger.
'High regard'
Mr Kissinger, 82, has now told a the private Indian television channel
NDTV that his comments did not reflect American policy during the
1970s.
I regret that these words were used. I have extremely high regard for
Mrs Gandhi as a statesman, he said.

CONVERSATION: MAY 26, 1971
Kissinger: They are the most aggressive goddamn people around there
Nixon: The Indians?
Kissinger: Yeah
Nixon: Sure
The fact that we were at cross purposes at that time was inherent in
the situation but she was a great leader who did great things for her
country.
One key conversation transcript comes from the meeting between
President Nixon and Mr Kissinger in the White House on 5 November
1971, shortly after a meeting with the visiting Indira Gandhi.
We really slobbered over the old witch, says President Nixon.

Kissinger and Nixon opposed an independent Bangladesh
The Indians are bastards anyway, says Mr Kissinger. They are
starting a war there.
He adds: While she was a bitch, we got what we wanted too. She will
not be able to go home and say that the United States didn't give her
a warm reception and therefore in despair she's got to go to war.
Mr Kissinger told NDTV that this was not a formal conversation.
This was somebody letting off steam at the end of a meeting in which
both President Nixon and I were emphasising that we had gone out of
our way to treat Mrs Gandhi very cordially, he said.
There was disappointment at the results of the meeting. The language
was Nixon language.
Relations between India and US have strengthened since Mr Kissinger's days.

Indira Gandhi sought stronger links with the Soviet Union
The US recognises that India is a global power, that is a strategic
partner of the US on the big issues, Mr Kissinger said.
However, President Nixon and Mr Kissinger's remarks have angered
India's ruling Congress party.
It is shocking that the head of state of a country and his principal
adviser chose to use such intemperate language against a popularly
elected prime minister of another country, party spokesman Anand
Sharma said.
These words have no relevance today... we hope the present US leader
also rejects these remarks which were definitely in very poor taste.

What does Vamos ao Bailinho mean?
I thought 'vamos' meant 'get away' like 'oximor'.
And Bailinho was like 'bail' in Bailancho Sad. Women.

So is it Getaways for Women. Like some travel programme?
How come Silviano features in Getaways for Women?

http://specials.rediff.com/news/2005/jun/30msg.htm

Even before the ink can dry on the new defence agreement Defence
Minister Pranab Mukherjee and United States Secretary of Defence
Donald Rumsfeld have signed, declassified documents reveal that former
US secretary of state Henry Kissinger had called Indians 'bastards'
and that Washington had pushed China to attack India during the 1971
war with Pakistan.

It is well known that former US president Richard Nixon and Kissinger
had a poor opinion of Indians and of then prime minister Indira Gandhi
in particular, but these documents show just how deep the antipathy
ran.

Kissinger even referred to Indira as 'a bitch' shortly after her visit
to the US, just ahead of the 1971 Indo-Pak crisis.

Should India ingore these revelations, or factor them into the intense
attempts to nurture a strategic partnership with the US? What stand
should India adopt?

[Goanet]Aviation scam?

2005-07-01 Thread Cecil Pinto
Will any of the aviation experts on this forum tell me if there is a scam
going in advertising of
discounted airline tickets. The advertised discounted rate for Spice Jet
Goa-Delhi (one way) is Rs. 2,399/-. Try going to their website
http://www.spicejet.com and typing any possible combination of passengers
and dates (Goa-Delhi, I didn't try other routes) and all you will get is a
Rs. 50/- discount on the full fare of Rs. 4,199/-. And on the same webpage
is a advertisement flashing on the right saying the discounted Goa-Delhi
flight is Rs. 2,399/-

A call to their local office here in Goa was quite enlightening.

Hello can I book four discounted Goa-Delhi tickets?

No discounted tickets are available!

But you haven't even asked me what date I'm planning to fly!

Oh! What date Sir?

2nd August

Sorry Sir. No discounted tickets available

3rd September?

Sorry Sir!

Okay you give me a date

What do you mean Sir?

You pick a date, any date, any day. Even next year!

Sorry Sir. No discounted tickets are available.

Then why are you advertising massive discounts if one books a month in
advance? Are there discounted tickets available or not?

Of course there are Sir. All tickets have been booked.

By who? Give me the name of one passenger who I can phone and confirm that
you're telling the truth.

I can't divulge passengers names sir

So why can't you give me a date somewhere in December? Five months in advance

I'm only authorised to take bookings until October, Sir

But there are no discounted tickets available in that period

Yes Sir

Then why do you continue to advertise discounted fares?

Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi.

Sir,

Subject: Setting up of a daily regional news bulletin in Konkni language in
Doordarshan Kendra- Panaji - Goa.

It is the policy of Government of India to disseminate information on
welfare programmes of the government throughout the country through the
medium of Doordarshan Kendra. Accordingly, such units have been established
in all state capitals of the country. Goa too has a Doordarshan Kendra.
However, this Kendra does not provide a daily news bulletin in 'Konkni' the
state language which is spoken and understood by 98% of the people of Goa.
So the major national and state events taking place in Goa go unreported in
Konkni language which is detrimental to the interests of Goans.

Last year, the International Film Festival was held in Panaji, the state's
capital, but was not covered properly by the local Doordarshan Kendra for
want of a NEWS UNIT at the Kendra, Panaji.

We therefore request you to kindly look into this matter and order the

Joe,

How does questioning the authenticity of Jesus's
alleged miracles constitute a gruesome attack on
christianity! Are we being a tad over-reactive, or is
this a manifestation of an underlying insecurity?

Likewise, there is nothing wrong with inspirational or
religious stories - if one acknowledges them as being
fictional. The issue here is that the information was

people choose to shut off their brains and cut and

Folks,

Bravo! Is it happening exactly as I said. The gang is now in full swing.
Poor guy Santosh did not have anything new to post, all he has to rely on
are cutpaste links from the past. I sure hope that the readers are going
to go through those links provided by Santosh and note the tirade by his
support-group.

I just finished emailing a response to George Pinto’s post, and will post my
comments on his buddy Santosh Helekar’s post, as and when I have spare
time, and if I find it necessary.

BTW: Did I tell you that these guys have begun their “clandestine
operation?” I have been getting unsolicited emails (spam mails) from
Santosh and his support-group; they are trying every way possible to
browbeat me. So far, my e-box is inundated with their spasm posts, which are
directed to the trashcan.

This is how their clandestine games are played. Beware!!

I am not making this up; if you don’t believe me, ask the honorable Santosh
Helekar, he will confirm it. Hopefully, he will do the honorable thing and
admit it.

Best wishes,

PS: I have been ignoring their spam emails all this time, but enough is
enough and I should make it known to those who are involved.

PPS: Attn- Santosh Helekar Support-group: Please cease and desist in
sending me those spam (hate) emails. If you choose not to, I will be
constrained to report your unsolicited emails to your Internet Service

[Goanet]Paedophile; involved in Goa too.

Paedophile suspect in Indian custody

Bombay: A British national wanted for paedophile offences against
street children in India was remanded in police custody yesterday by a
Bombay court after he surrendered to police.

Duncan Grant, 54, was told to appear in court again on July 8. If
convicted, he faces life imprisonment.

Grant surrendered to police late on Wednesday after flying from London
to face charges of sexual abuse of children and child trafficking in a
case registered in Bombay in 2001.

An international arrest warrant had been issued against Grant, who had
been on the run for the past four years. He was also being sought by
Interpol.

Dressed in pink shirt and white trousers, the clean-shaven Grant
appeared composed in the courtroom.

I have nothing to say, he told reporters while being taken from the
court by police, amid a frenzy of photographers grappling to take his
picture.

Another British national, Alan Waters, has also been arrested in the
case along with Indian national William D'Souza. Waters, a former
British Royal Navy officer, was extradited to India from the US.

Public prosecutor Yug Mohit Chowdhary said the three men had founded a
child orphanage, Anchorage, in south Bombay where they allegedly
abused a number of homeless children in 2001.

Five of the children came forward and accused the three of these
charges, he said.

Grant, who says he is a charity worker, fled India in 2001 after the
accusations surfaced.

Police yesterday said that extradition proceedings against Grant from
Britain had been under way when he had decided to give himself up. He
was afraid of being defamed in his own country ... so he returned to
India last night, said inspector Jaywant Shelar.

He ran a racket of similar kind in Goa and we want to investigate
that angle too, Shelar said.

Media reports said Grant had run shelters for homeless children in Dar
es Salaam in Tanzania after he fled India.

Chowdhary said the three accused had been involved in an international
racket of sex tourism and we want to investigate it.

[Goanet]PRESS STATEMENT For kind favour of Publication

2005-07-01 Thread goasuraj
July 1, 2005.

To:
The Administrator,
Goanet.
via e-mail

Sir,
Kindly publish the following Press Statement issued by the party and oblige.

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,
for Goa Su Raj Party.
Sd/-
Floriano C. Lobo
Gen. Sec/Spokesperson.

**
PRESS STATEMENT
The Goa Su-Raj Party is not surprised at the sacking of the Director of
Tourism Mr. Elvis Gomes for his alleged complicity in misleading the
Governor of Goa on the removal of the River Princess.
When the five member delegation of the party handed over to the Governor, on
March 28, 2005, a lengthy memorandum, one of the items in the memorandum was
the removal of the River Princess which read as under:
D.River Princess:
An investigation is to be ordered into the role of the erstwhile Manohar
Parrikar Government in the delay involved in the removal of the River
Princess and the belated award of the tender for its removal to Crosschem
Pvt. Ltd. All efforts to be made to remove this curse which has affected
tourism and the local population of Candolim and Calangute. Investigation is
also to be instituted into the disappearance of the machinery of the River
Princess and culpability ascribed.
The bold assurance that the Governor had given to the members of the
delegation, was, in his own words: Heads will roll. We believe that in
Elvis Gomes' sacking, unfortunately only one head has rolled. But the
question which persists is was the sacking justified? If it was, then the
Governor would not have served the notice to Mr. Elvis Gomes at 8.00 p.m in
the night through the police which happened to be the eve of the counting
of votes in the bye-elections of June 2, 2005. This smacks of the Governor
washing his hands off the case with Mr. Elvis Gomes as the 'scapegoat'.
The Goa Su-Raj Party strongly believes that the Governor of Goa, by this
singular action, is not leading Goans to believe that he was working in the
best interest of Goa and of Goans. Goans have had wool pulled over their
eyes all too often, now to believe that one person was solely responsible
for the sabotage that has taken place. The Governor will do better to
prevail on the 'Rane government' to immediately institute a time bound
inquiry to identify the person/s in the government responsible for : (a)
giving the contract to Crosschem Pvt. Ltd. (b) who was in charge of
liaising with the company after it was awarded the contract. (c) whose
responsibility it was to do the follow-up on the performance of the said
company and duly file progress reports and (d) what action is proposed to be
taken against the company and those in the government responsible for this
fiasco.
If the government of Goa is not inclined, for its own reasons, to follow the
process suggested by this party, then we hereby demand that the ex-director
of Tourism Mr. Elvis Gomes be re-instated forthwith, or, in the alternative,
the government should come out with the necessary material and put the same
before the public of Goa in order to justify the action of the Governor in
suspending Mr. Elvis Gomes alone.
Let the elector be the best judge of the actions of the government.
End.

Dear Basilio,

A very nice post and a delight to read. Thank you. There is a third river,
one which we
sometimes ignore. It asks: so what if science is right in explaining the world
and natural
phenomena, so what if religion gives life and death meaning? The ranks of the
poor increase,
abject poverty exists, illiteracy/homelessness is present in great numbers in
our world. Unless
science and religion address those issues (to me the fundamental issues of our
time), there will
always need to be a third river, a moral and ethical waterway which meanders
through science and
religion, but regretfully gets drowned in their truths (small 't').

2005-07-01 Thread Philip Thomas
1.Government should realize that it is talking about Special Economic Zone
(SEZ) under Central SEZ policy and not about State SEZ under State SEZ
policy (which we don't have)

Let's talk a little more about Central SEZ with real examples even if it
from elsewhere.

2.the additional requirement of having port/airport within that SEZ area is
out of question for Verna

What if the whole of Goa is declared an SEZ. It can have one or even two
airports!

3.can Goa think of attracting major industries
without offering several major additional sops which are not being offered
by other SEZs?

Goa must attract industries based on its 'comparative advantage' not on
sops.

4.How it is planned (at least projected/proposed) is still a big question
here in Goa and to Goans

You can say that again!

5.it is crystal clear that the ultimate beneficiaries of Goa's SEZ will be
non-Goan business houses, that too at the cost of the Goan exchequer.

Jumping to conclusions which you yourself said should be avoided in 4!

Mapusa civic chief voted out

Pushing to the background the festering garbage problem at Mapusa
and executing the fourth change of the chairperson's post in this
five-year term, seven councillors out of 13, today voted out
Mr Sandip Falari from the post of chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal
Council (MMC).

Five councillors, including Mr Falari, voted against the motion. One
councillor, Mr Prabakar Vernekar was absent as he is away in Mumbai
due to personal reasons.

Mr Falari had taken over as MMC chairperson on February 1, 2005.
Since the next municipal council elections in Goa are scheduled in
October 2005, the next and fifth MMC chairperson will have only a
three-month term.

The motion of no-confidence against Mr Falari was filed on June 22
by seven councillors. They had cited three reasons why the council
had lost confidence in him. They accused him of misusing the
Municipalities Act, misusing municipal funds and of showing bias
towards ruling councillors.

Today's meeting that commenced at 11.05 a.m was presided over
by the deputy collector of Bardez, Mr Mahesh Khorjuvenkar. Before
the vote through a show of hands, he allowed members from both sides
to briefly express their views. Speaking for the motion and against the
chairperson, Mr Armindo Braganza and former chairperson, Mr Michael
Carrasco, cited examples to prove how Mr Falari had erred.

They said he had failed to constitute the standing committee within
seven days of being elected as chairperson and that he had resorted
to irregularities in spending council funds. Accusing the chairperson
of bias in desilting works, Mr Carrasco said Mr Falari had allowed
municipal labourers to work much longer in the wards of ruling
councilors and neglected the wards of opposition councillors.

He also blamed the chairperson for failing to address the garbage
problem of Mapusa, saying Mr Falari had sought to solve it alone
instead of taking the full council into confidence. Mr Carrasco also
accused the Chairperson of a long list of injustices.

In his defence, Mr Falari claimed he had distributed municipal funds
and resources equitably to all 13 wards. He said he had no support
from the state government because he took over on February 1 and
the government fell on February 2, pushing the Mapusa MLA,
Mr Francisco D'Souza to the opposition. During the ensuing three
and half months of President's Rule, he had no support from the
government but had done his best for the town, he said.

Among other things, he cited the utilisation of Rs 21-lakh in unused
funds, to which the council had added a matching amount and
distributed equally to all 13 wards. He also claimed to have obtained
grant of Rs 26-lakh from the department of science and technology
and distributed equally.

Mr Sudhir Kandolkar and Ms Shubangi Vaigankar also spoke against
the motion. The date to elect a new chairperson is yet to be set. But
sources indicated that Mr Armindo Braganza is most likely to file
his nomination for the post.

[Goanet]The book of Common Prayer

2005-07-01 Thread Salus Correia
Once again, Cecil has done it! And this time as the 'Virtual Biblical
Scholar' he has continued to impress!
Well done Cecil, good research there. The book of Common Prayer is
indeed a well that one can go to. There is one point though - about the
Catholics using an Anglican book. Well, that is a very good sign, isn't
it? Today the churches are all moving towards unity, and use the best
of each other for the common goal of praising our God. Here in our
parish we used Anglican material for our lenten scripture groups, and it
was very inspiring indeed. We also have ecumenical meetings where all
the churches [say many of them!] get together now and then for a common
day of worship and praise. The good thing is that the Catholic Church
has taken the intiative, and hopefully the day will come when the
churches will be united once again.
