GOVT GETS GOING ON FILM FETE VENUE: The State government is all set to
plunge into activity in preparing for the International Film Festival of
India 2004, having had the brain storming session with Cannes International
Film Festival Managing Director Veronica Kayla and the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting Joint Secretary Anjali Duggal yesterday and on
Monday.A Liaison Office will begin functioning from the old GMC premises and
will cater to inquiries coming from people interested to contribute their
talents, efforts and time towards the event. (GT)

MELODY KING, ALFRED ROSE DEAD: Alfred Rose, beloved of Goans the world over
for his Konkani songs as well as his melodious voice, is no more. He died at
his residence at Mahim, Mumbai, around 5 pm yesterday. With his death, a
long and glorious chapter in Goan Konkani music comes to an end. Alfred's
superb voice, his brilliant composing skills and songs with myriad themes,
all of which showed his love of his homeland Goa, got a rude jolt when
around 2000, he suffered a paralytic stroke that not only incapacitated his
entire side but also took away his most prized asset, his voice. (NT)
Alfred Rose was born on August 5, 1932 to AMB Rose and Dolorosa Fernandes
in Calvim, Aldona. He leaves behind his wife Rita, sons Schubert and
Engelbert and daughter Alria. You can hear a bit of Alfie's melodious voice

MOU FOR SKY BUS VENTURE: The Goa government yesterday signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Konkan Railway Corporation to form a joint venture
company for the proposed Sky Bus project. According to the MoU, 50 per cent
of the equity capital of the company will be by the Goa government nominee
agency and the remaining 50 per cent will be by the KRC in kind as the
consideration towards licensing the technology to the company. (GT)

'HC ORDERS ENFORCED': Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate
justified the action of demolishing the gate built by the Cidade de Goa
management at Dona Paula, stating that it was to implement an order by the
Bombay High Court. (GT)

GOVT TEACHERS WARNED: The Department of Education, in a very strongly worded
notice issued yesterday, has urged government teachers to refrain from
engaging themselves in managements of profit and private businesses with
immediate effect. (H)

'BABUSH VIOLATED HC ORDER': Cidade de Goa Beach Resort chairman Audhoot
Timblo yesterday stated that Town and Country Planning Minister Babush
Monserrate had violated the High Court order and that he would seek legal
recourse for clarification of the order. (GT)

INDIA REFUSES VISAS TO PAK FOR SECURITY MEET IN GOA: India yesterday almost
confirmed that visas were denied to Pakistani delegates for a conference on
South Asian security to be held in Goa later this month since a few
foreigners were also going to participate in the meet. The issue of third
parties getting involved (in India-Pakistan matters) has not found favour
with us, an External Affairs ministry spokesman told reporters in New
Delhi. (UNI report in H)

MINOR DERAILMENT AT TALPONA: A minor derailment of the 2617 Up
Ernakulam-Nizamuddin Mangala Express occurred at Talpona, Galigbaga, due to
a landslide on account of the heavy downpour recently. With nearly 2000
passengers on board the train at the time of the incident, no casualties
were, however, reported. (GT)

PANJIM, VASCO POTENTIAL AREAS FOR 'HEPATITIS E' OUTBREAK: A detailed study
done by the medical cell of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, has warned
that Panjim and Vasco are two potential areas for a possible 'Hepatitis E'
outbreak in the future, party general secretary, Dr Wilfred Mesquita, said
yesterday. (H)

GUJ TO SEEK LEGAL ADVICE: The executive committee of Goa Union of
Journalists which met in Panaji yesterday decided to seek legal advice on
the statement issued by Rajesh Singh, Press Liaison Officer to the Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar, in connection with the meeting of GUJ delegation
with the Chief Minister. The executive committee after discussion felt that
the statement issued by the Liaison Officer appears to be ambiguous and
there was a need of its interpretation by a legal expert. (GT)

HOARDINGS FACE AXE: All hoardings-within 75 mts along the highways are
likely to get the axe from the authorities. A decision to crack a whip
against these hoardings was taken at a meeting convened by Chief Secretary
DS Negi with senior officials. (H)

BARS FOUND OPEN BEYOND 11 PM...: If the district authorities are to be
believed, than most bars in Margao will be forced to down shutters by 11 pm
on Thursday, on the eve of Diwali festival. The suggestion for the closure
of all bars by 11 pm was mooted by the Margao police on the eve of the
festival to maintain law and order during the Narkasura competitions. (H)

Miguel,

Those who believe in miracles are not really stupid. They might
actually be quite smart. Michael Shermer, a wellknown skeptic has
written a book called Why Smart People Believe Weird Things. In it
he asks Is flapdoodle the fodder for fools? His answer is no.

Most people believe such things because they have believed them all
their lives. They have grown used to being in a mental world in which
the laws of Physics are different from those in the real world. The
Matrix is laid out for them - for us, and reloaded over and over
again. One needs a Matrix revolution in one's mind. Not an easy task.

There are also other reasons for holding such beliefs, some of which
can be quite unspiritual. Monica Besra's husband did not believe in
the first miracle - the overnight disappearance of the tumor, for
quite a while. He believed in it only after a second miracle took
place - the overnight disappearance of his poverty. You see, he has
become a landlord now.

Cheers,

Santosh

Shame on you Tata !

If this ruling is not opposed, be sure the lush green Betim hillock is soon
going to end up being an eye sore.

It's a shame that such a project had been allowed to be started in the first
place moreover this lies bang opposite the Secretariat.

The entire Betim hillock needs to be declared a green belt and no
construction zone.

Can we do something...?

Apex court sets aside HC order for demolition of Betim project

- In an interesting development, the Supreme Court of India has set aside an

[Goanet]COMMENT: Getting into Goa...

2003-10-21 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Getting into Goa

In Singapore, you get free local phone calls on arrival at the airport. In
Finland's capital of Helsinki, the sleek and regular Volvo buses ferry you
from Vaanta airport to town for around four to five Euros, an extremely
reasonable fare by local standards. If you're a stranger in this city, no
reason to fear. There's a nifty website that gives you elaborate
instructions on how to get from one point to another in town. Not just that,
it will also tell you exactly how long your journey would take, what time
you need to start at if you want to reach on time, and which buses or trains
or trams could connect you. Even nearby Bangalore welcomes you to the
Garden City with pre-paid autorickshas from near the main city railway
station -- which means no over-charging -- and an un-crowded booking counter
that allows you to book tickets speedily to scores of destinations in
neighbouring states. Places like Hyderabad have elaborate what's-on guides
that tell you how to keep buys while in the city. Smaller cities like Hubli
or Belgaum make up by their local transport network.

What does one get in Goa?

You land at the airport, and there are no buses to take you onward. Your
taxi ride costs more than a Mumbai-Goa bus ticket. That's not all. Across
the state, taxis and rickshaws charge so extortionately high, that they've
almost priced themselves out of business. Few taxi operators do well. Others
wait in queue up outside hotels to get a single passenger, which could be
once a day or even once in two days. Goa's scattered nature, and lack of
return passengers, poses its own problems. But surely some solution could be
thought of; just as the mini-buses have proven to be a boon to ply in parts
of a small state where larger buses have been unviable.

Leave alone the tourists, even the locals are plagued by a transport system
-- dreams of the Skybus notwithstanding -- that saps their energies and
makes them un-competitive. It results shops in main-towns like Panjim closing
shutters by 8 pm if not earlier; workers need to, after all, find their way
home. River-based transport, both scenic and enjoyable, never touches even a
fraction of its potential, despite frequent promises on this score.

For a supposed touristic paradise, Goa offers the visitor a rather raw deal.
Getting into or out of Goa can be quite a challenge. Strange for a state
which claims to be one of South Asia's most popular tourist and conference
destinations.

This is something that plagues many of the 1.35 million residents of this
state, and a greater number of visitors coming to Goa each year. It also
affects the large expat population of Goans, regardless of whether they come
in by air, rail or road.

Thing are far from functional. Start at the Konkan Railway Corporation
booking counter at Panjim. It could be an interesting exercise to study the
man-hours wasted there, because of the long queues one has to put up with.
During the frequent seasonal rush, tickets are hard to come by. Railway
agents help a bit; but if you have to cancel a ticket booked through an
agent, life can be hell. The KRC was showing some signs of offering more
travel options to Goa; but the June 2003 accident that killed 50 has meant a
major setback to their plans for faster trains and safer journeys.

Goa's rail links with Bangalore, not even a daily service, show the
lackadaisical manner in which the transportation needs of the region are
taken care of. We're worse off, on this front, than we were many years back.
The coastal steamer offered both tourists and Goans an inexpensive and
enjoyable journey; but the misdirected IPKF operations in Sri Lanka put paid
to that once and for all. Substituting that with catamarans and hover-crafts
have long been spoken of, and even tried. Even if far costlier, such
services have, till date, not been able to sustain themselves.

Bus services have long been propped up by the private sector. Market
pressures have brought in some degree of efficiency. But there too, all the
buses for Mumbai depart from either end in the late afternoons or evenings.
This means, the traveller is stuck if he needs to reach Mumbai (or Goa) at
any time other than the morning. Besides, buses can be plagued by breakdowns
en route, or get caught in the morning traffic-jam while entering Mumbai.
Can such infrastructure just be left to chance to come about?

Not to say that the air scenario is better. Mopa airport is still a dream.
Navy-controlled Dabolim offers its odd-hour slots to the airlines, meaning
you land there around dawn, or have to jostle with the whole lot of flights
bunched-up during the afternoon hours.

Within Goa, the transport infrastructure is as chaotic, if not worse.
Office-goers living as little as 10 kms away from the state-capital have to
depend on their own two-wheelers, thereby clogging roads and enhancing
pollution levels in this small state. Late-night buses, despite frequent
promises, have been a non-starter. Even on the

I just had to flog this horse back to life! I do not
know how valid this information is, the email

from the website:
http://www.goa-world.com/books/konkani.htm

For those speakers and fans of Konkani, there's a good
book just out. Mukhamvaram/Movllam is labelled (by its
publishers) a rare book in Konkani and brings across
traditional sayings, proverbs, idioms, colloquial
sentences, popular quotes, indirect hints etc. It is
compiled by J.B.Sequeira of Mangalore, and is printed
in three major Konkani scripts -- Kannada, Nagari and

you need to know at least one of these scripts (or a
little Konkani) to follow it. --Fred. PS: It is
published by Konkani Prakashanalaya, 4 Zainab Villa,

Looking for a match for my cousin.

She is a single Roman Catholic Goan girl and has recently turned 24.
She is about 5.5 ft in height, slim, very fashionable and extremely
attractive.

After finishing B.Com., she has taken up employment in Goa.

She has been brought up with conservative Goan values - at the same
time, she is very westernized.

Sounds interesting?

You got to be a single Roman Catholic Goan boy (or of Goan descent),
30 years or under, handsome, educated, financially independent and
preferably settled in the West.

If interested, e-mail your response to me, giving details about
yourself and your family.

I will be visiting Goa between Nov 16-Jan 04 and we would prefer to
meet with you/your family in Goa, during that time.

Jimmy Fernandes.

Well said mon ami, with this I am with you and we are not being pedantic!

Blessed are the stupid, the truth does not bother them.

I only feel sad for Mother Theresa. She did not deserve this after her
death. She had willingly relinquished[not abdicated] her post of the

[Goanet-news]OBITUARY: Goa's 'melody king' is no more

2003-10-21 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
ALFRED ROSE: OBITUARY -- GOA'S MELODY KING IS NO MORE

Goa's Melody King Alfred Rose faded away on Tuesday, even as his song will
continue to inspire the tens of thousands of listeners it enchanged when
played on the radio or across cultural performances of local Konkani-loving
audiences that cut across dividing lines of religion, caste, or state.

Remember, the singer with a Panama hat on his head and a magic wand in his
hand delivering the opening song for tiatrs in English-Konkani in the
'60s?, reminisced Isidore Dantas, in a recent profile published in the
local monthly 'Goa Today'.

Rose had the ability to appeal to a wide range of taste; one recalls his
performance at an 'international' Konkani meet organised in Mangalore in
1995, where his acceptance by a wide range of Konkani speakers was quickly
apparent.

Besides being called Goa's Melody King, Alfred Rose was also called The Man
with the Golden Voice by the HMV recording company, and gifted other
sobriquets like Konkani's Ambassador, International Superstar, and the
Living Legend of Konkani Music.

Rose had been ailing for some time now, and was tended by his musician-wife
Rita and their family.

Born Rosario Alfred Fernandes in 1932 at Calvim, Aldona, he got his stage
name from his father Ambrose Fernandes, who's name is believed to have got
shortened to AMB Rose by the Karachi Jesuits.

He has six decades of musical popularity to his credit, and was
christened Junior Rose by versatile Konkani tiatrist C Alvares, being the
youngest among the actors during his tiatr debut way back in 1943.

Alfred Rose, who had directed the music for the film Bogllant, is also
credited with recording all eight songs in a single day.

Rose spoke highly of the patronage of Goans abroad, saying he has toured
globally and performed his Konkani musical show in almost every Goan
centre of emigration.

Tributes to the artiste recall that Alfred Rose who started out in fifties
with ever popular hits such as Sui Sut Ani Cator (The Needle, The
Thread, and The Sissors)) and Dev Nidonk Nam (God's Not Asleep) is
credit with having charmed the air waves of Portuguese-run pre-1961 era
Emissora de Goa and All India Radio.

Archive reports noted Alfred Rose's recent felicitation in Goa, which took
place before his bout of illhealth. Together with the Aldona-origin singer,
also feted were his singer-actress wife Rita and daughter Alria.

For some reason, the Goa government's lack of public recognition to this
talented musician who won the heart of lakhs of fans, has been critically
commented on in various fora. In Mapusa too, the felicitation was not by the
government, but by the local Konkani Seva Kendra.

In the presence of Konkani scholar Dr Tanaji Halarnkar, then Tourism Minister
Victoria Fernandes did the honours of felicitating the ageing singer, amidst
a thunderous applause.

She also promised to take cognizance of the memorandum handed over to her by
the Konkani Seva Kendra, and said she would work towards getting Kala
Academy's open air auditorium named after Alfred Rose, the Goanow webzine
reported.

In his short but inspiring speech then, Alfred Rose then emotionally
exhorted Goans not to look down upon Konkani, but to wholeheartedly
embrace it and speak it in the homes.

Goan philanthropist Jerome Mendes is credited with being the first Goan to
take Alfred Rose and his troupe to the UK with his tiatrists and produced
his first Konkani long-play record called 'Londoncho Mog' with English
musicians.

Together with popular singers, Alfred Rose is also credited with having sung
for Bollywood's film industry. Others besides Rose who have this to their
credit include Lorna (who sang chorus for Mohamed Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lata
Mangueshkar), Asha Bhonsle, Francis Vaz ('Baarish'), Usha Mangueshkar, Usha
Amonkar, Sudesh Bhonsle, among others. Rose's performance was for 'Love in
Goa'. (ENDS)

Case filed against Pope, Sister Nirmala

IANS[ TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2003 11:58:52 AM ]

BHUBANESWAR : An Orissa-based rationalist group has lodged a police complaint
against Sister Nirmala of the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) and the Pope for
falsely propagating that Mother Teresa had cured a woman of stomach cancer.

Prafulla Kumar Naik from the organisation Pragati filed a written complaint against
the two at the Kendrapada police station, officials said on Tuesday.

Mother Teresa did not cure Monika Besra (of West Bengal ). The doctors cured her,
he asserted.

In his complaint, he also said the MoC, Sister Nirmala and Pope John Paul II were
doing harm to society by falsely propagating unscientific things about Mother
Teresa.

[Goanet]Regarding Malaproposim.

2003-10-21 Thread Gabe Menezes
There is a parallel, intercourse going on which Goanet would frown upon.
This is in reference to the recent posting by Mr. Nair. I thought that all
the people inducted into this forum were of the jocular kind. To my
amazement, savvy people are involved. I share this, with you hope it
enriches, the vocabulary of the people who participate on Goanet, I feel
the response is absolutely brilliant.

I presume you are referring to the following event
detailed below. However, I do not see what the issue
is. The bishop who happend to be a board member's
brother performed a service for the community and
was given an award of some kind. My first response to
this is did the president overule the rest of the
board in organizing this event? If not, what is the
issue? I'm assuming of course they were elected to
their positions and thus have the authority to
organize social and religious events. I'm also
assuming that the GOA-UK is not a secular organization
and whose membership primarily consists of goan
catholics. Sorry for my basic questions as I dont live
 in the UK.

 http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2003-28/ as
 follows:

 SPECIAL REPORT: Visit by Bishops.

The UK was fortunate to receive visits from Bishop
Filipe Neri Ferrao (auxiliary Bishop of Goa) and
 Bishop Agnelo Gracias (auxiliary Bishop
of Mumbai and brother of the GOA President, Flavio
Gracias). Bishop Filipe Neri Ferrao celebrated Mass
at Southwark Cathedral and at the social that
followed a presentation was made to him on behalf of
 the Goan Community

RESPONSE:

First of all The President has not been elected by the General Body, he
failed to stand for elections. An E.G.M was called for elections. They were
advised that it would be illegal to hold an election at an E.G.M. . The
remedy used thereafter is highly irregular if not down right illegal. The
confirmation of elections can only be done at an A.G.M as per our
Constitution. If he was not elected in the first place they body cannot
simply okay something which didn't happen. I have checked on the legality of
this and have found out that it is a down right fraud . Furthermore it was
not on the agenda that this was the course of action that would be taken. I
have received advise that the correct thing, would have been to call and
A.G.M under the title of unfinished business. The President may be opted by
the Board members. If this is the case he has no authority to sign.

Many people perform a service and are allowed to charge for their services -
say a band playing or a disco When and if you pay over the odds for a
disco then you suspect that something is not correct. Secondly the usual
practise is for the offertory collection or part of it to be gifted to the
officiating clergy. I have not read anywhere in our Constitution that the
Association can organize religious events. We have a memorandum and this
should be adhered to. I do not believe this to be the case.

It might be that it was worthy to make gifts, where do we stop and how far
can we go?

Cheers,

Gabe Menezes.

Fred says: Misuse of the Press is not, and can never be, justified. On

*all* the time. This is the *reality*.

In my book when one talks about reality it is rationalisation. Because
reality is a subjective matter. I also think that one who rationalises one
set of actions has a substantially reduced right to criticise similar set of
actions done by another person in another situation.

I would once again like to repeat what the Prof Amartya Sen has to say:
Indeed, voting is only one way--though certainly a very important way--of
making public discussions effective, when the opportunity to vote is
combined with the opportunity to speak, and to listen, without fear. The

Ash is Time's queen
October 20, 2003 13:49 IST
Celebrating Indian cinema's arrival on the world stage, Time magazine
has come out with a cover story on the changing face of Bollywood. The
magazine, which projects Aishwarya Rai as Bollywood's 'queen', has the
former Miss World on the cover of its latest issue.

The article also highlights crossover movies, films with bold themes and
the increasing Western interest in Bollywood.

The weekly, which focuses on the younger generation in its latest issue,
describes Aamir Khan as 'India's most respected and versatile young
actor' and praises director Ram Gopal Varma for 'ditching song-and-dance
fantasies for urban grittiness.'

Heaping lavish praise on Aishwarya, the magazine describes her as
'India's standard bearer' and says 'she may position herself as New
Bollywood in terms of roles but, in person, Rai embodies the Indian
middle class and the very old Bollywood ideal -- a modern girl with
traditional values. For someone emerging as a 21st century film star,
there are few people less likely to turn into a Western style sex
kitten.'

The magazine points out that the Indian film industry releases an
average of 1,000 films as compared to Hollywood's 740 and attracts a
world audience -- from Kuala Lumpur to Cape Town -- of 3.6 billion,
compared to Hollywood's 2.6 billion.

It lists Awara, Mother India, Sholay, Ankur, Bombay and Devdas among the
'10 Indian films to treasure.'

But the article, which includes interviews with legendary Amitabh
Bachchan and director Mira Nair, among others, has little to say about
the film industry in Chennai and Kolkata.

Shack licensing mechanism under fire for not being foolproof
---
Shacks are unique to Goa so also are the rules and regulations under
which they are allowed. The allotment of shacks has, however, been
surrounded in one controversy or the other every year. Every year the
government calls for applications from among the Goan people at
the onset of the tourism season for running of shacks on the beaches
and the shacks are allotted after draw of lots.
Though the successful applicants have been given assurance over
the years by the authorities that they would be given the contract to
run the shacks next year, somehow or the other the assurance made
to shack owners have not been kept.
Like every year, this year also the applications were called for running
the shacks and 193 people have been allotted shacks after draw of lots,
which was held in public. But some of the shack owners, who lost out
on lots, have been crying foul and allege that the system was not foolproof.
The tourism director, Mr N Suryanarayana told The Navhind Times that
the draw of lots was held in full view of applicants and young children
and others among public were invited to draw lots. This system has
been adopted by the government ever since the Bombay High Court
directed it, he added.
Mr Suryanarayana, however, said that this year government had decided
not to give licences to run the additional 51 shacks which were permitted
last year. This decision follows the assurance to the effect given by the
Tourism Minister, Mr Francisco Xavier Pacheco on the floor of the state
legislative assembly.
He said that there were as many as 60 new allottees this year from
among the 193 successful applicants. He also said the applications
at various strategic tourists locations, like Calangute, Candolim,
Baga, Colva, etc were far in excess of number of shacks to be permitted
and at other places like Velsao, etc the applicants match the number of
shacks to be permitted.
Mr Suryanarayana denied knowledge of any of the allottees giving rights
to run the shack to others for a premium. There have been allegation
that a number of people seek allotment of shacks and on successful
bidding they give the rights to others, most of whom are those who
do lose out on lots but have been running the shacks earlier.
Meanwhile, key players in the hospitality industry feel that government
should have a uniform policy to regulate the food business on the beaches.
The senior officials in the hospitality industry feel that rather than
permitted
shacks all along the beaches, the government could set up food courts
on-line with those existing in other parts of the world.

For this, they said, the government should build infrastructure complete
with all facilities like running water, toilets, decent food storage
facilities,
proper cooking facilities septic tanks, etc at strategic places near the
beaches and let out these to the successful applicants.

These facilities would help maintain the beaches and also help the
service providers provide better quality food thereby eliminating health
risks. These facilities will also help the people run their business well,
said the officials in tourism industry.
They further said that rather than permitting structures on the beaches
which spoil the beauty and create hindrance to people, food courts will
go a long way in maintaining the beauty of the beaches and help their
owners in running the business round the year.

Understaffed PWD leaves Valpoi locals thirsty for 3 days!
--
The absence of a full-time PWD Assistant engineer, shortage of two
junior engineers, disruption of electricity and a PWD generator under
repairs. The result? No water supply to residents of Valpoi for three
days.
According to sources, the taps went dry on Wednesday and the
water was released only on Saturday.Unhappy residents pointed out
that many representations were made to the PWD office, but no
officer was present to entertain their grievances.
When Herald contacted the local PWD office (Water Supply),
it was revealed that the Assistant Engineer, holds additional charge
of Valpoi, attends to duties at Valpoi only twice a week. On the
other days, he is at his present posting at Bicholim.
The post of a full-time AE is vacant, following the transfer of AE
Kotariya about six months ago. Moreover, the post of two junior
engineers are also vacant, since the past few years. The lone
engineer Talikutti reportedly went to the site at the Dabose Water
plant, leaving only clerical staff to face the wrath of angry residents
at the PWD office.
Sources from the PWD office explained that the shortage of water
was due to disruption in electricity. However, they (PWD) could
have used a generator, in the absence of proper electricity, and
this would have reduced the hardships of the residents, insisted
Valpoi Municipal Council vice-chairman Daud Ali Aga.
When contacted, Deputy Speaker and local MLA Narahari Haldankar
admitted that the water supply problem could have been averted,
had the PWD used its generator. However, the PWD generator is
under repairs, explained Haldankar, but warned that such a lapse
by the PWD would not be tolerated in future. Haldankar also asked
the VMC to begin cleaning of all public wells, as a preparatory step
to tackle water scarcity, which could affect residents during summer.
Meanwhile, electricity department Assistant Engineer S Fernandes
informed Herald that at least 25 trees at Rede-ghat at Valpoi fell on
electricity lines during strong winds which hit Valpoi on Wednesday
afternoon.
Power supply was restored after 24 hours. Unfortunately, within
restoration of power supply, another tree fell on the wires and power
was shut down for another day, explained Fernandes. The clearing
operation was done by the Valpoi Fire Services, Valpoi police and
the electricity department.
Residents however complained that they were forced to consume
untreated water from unused wells, due to acute shortage of
drinking water.

The New Definition of Reality

Much has been said about the trouble of a negative attitude
and the power of a positive outlook. It has always been one
against the other, with optimism always winning out in the
end. But there is a third way, and in my opinion, it is the
most powerful and beneficial of all outlooks. What is it?

Reality.

Whether we like it or not, the world is neither good or
bad, positive or negative. The world simply is. It favors
no side, and throws bad luck toward no predetermined party.

It is a mirror, giving back to us what we give to it.

To understand this single idea is to gain the most empowering
mind set possible. The world is yours for the taking.

::Making it Work For You::

Marcelle Abney was a young woman living with cerebral
palsy. For some, this would have brought an end to any hope
for a successful and enjoyable life. It overwhelmed
Marcelle many times, and she wondered why the world did
this to her. This mind set didn't last long. The reality
was, she had cerebral palsy. She didn't do anything to
deserve it, she simply had it.

Instead of dwelling on the unfairness of life, she took her
condition and made it work for her. Today, Marcelle, is a
successful occupational therapist. Early on, she decided
that her condition would give her an advantage working with
others who could relate to her setbacks and needs. Marcelle
saw the world as it was, and made it work for her.

::We Get What We Give::

The world is exactly like a computer. You put in software,
(your actions), and it delivers the appropriate response
(reaction). Jeff Pryor was dealing with a handful of
interpersonal difficulties at work. He didn't get along
well with others, blaming their abrasive and unfriendly
personalities for the situation.

But then something happened. A friend took Jeff aside and
had a little talk with him. It went something like this.
'Jeff, I know you've been having some trouble with the
staff lately, and I know why you think it is happening. I'm
here, as your friend, to tell you the truth. The people
aren't unfriendly, and would be more than happy to treat
you better, if you would start to treat them better.'

'You see, Jeff, by thinking that your coworkers don't like
you, you treated them that way from the start. They merely
responded to your input. The reality is, you treat them
like friends, and they'll respond with friendship.'

Soon after, Jeff was enjoying work and his coworkers more
than ever before. When he realized that he viewed the world
in a way that made his life unbearable, he was able to
shape his perceptions differently, bringing him desirable
results.

::A Powerful Mindset::

If you put in negatives and frustration, you will receive
negative outcomes and frustrating circumstances. The world
doesn't care who you are, or what you do. Its only job is
to respond to what you give it. Now that you know how it
works, start playing the game to win and succeed.

Perhaps you feel that the odds are against you and you were
dealt a bad hand in life. Maybe you are having difficulty
losing weight, or can't seem to stop smoking. You may want
to get a better job and make more money, or you simply may
want to live a better life. Whatever it is, you can do it,
be it, or get it.

Patna room still houses Mother's memories
Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna | October 20, 2003 08:36 IST
Many may not be aware of the special association that a small room in
Patna has with Mother Teresa, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II on
October 19, 2003.

After joining the Loreto Sisters of Dublin, she came to India in 1929
and took the name Sister Teresa. She spent 17 years teaching and as
principal of St Mary's High School in Kolkata before deciding to work
among the 'poorest of the poor'.

Around 1948, she decided to form a congregation. But she lacked medical
training to serve the sick. Hence, she headed for the Holy Family
Hospital in Patna to learn about first aid.

Patna archbishop Benedict J Osta told rediff.com that the three months
she spent there were very precious for Mother Teresa. It was a period of
uncertainty. She was frightened and unsure of the future. It was her
training at the Holy Family Hospital that gave her the confidence to go
ahead with the task she had in mind.

The room where Mother Teresa stayed is now a part of the Missionaries of
Charity's house. Outside the room there is a board that read: 'Mother
Teresa, who started her mission of love after undertaking training at
Padri ki Haveli, stayed in this room, 1948.'

It has been left untouched, as it was when she inhabited it. The small
room still has everything she used: an iron cot, a large desk, a small
table on which she kept her Bible, a chair, a wall-mounted cupboard, a
kneeler bearing the symbol of Jesus Christ and a wooden clothes hanger.

The room leads to another, which has a picture of Mother Teresa with the
first governor of Bihar and Bishop Wilder Muth, taken on the occasion of
the inauguration of the MC House in Patna in 1963. There are other
pictures too, including one taken in her birthplace in Albania in 1928.

She was Patna's saint in the sense that she began her work from this
place. It had played an important role in shaping her career, said
Osta. People associated with different churches in the city celebrated
her beatification in a big way with special masses and prayer services.

The MC House will organise a mass on October 26 and an all-religion
prayer meeting on November 1. The bishop of Patna will also hold an
all-religion meet on November 9 and a mobile exhibition depicting Mother
Teresa's life is in the planning stages.

A senior member of the church said that usually it takes hundreds of
years after the death of a person before he/she can be considered for
beatification, but in Mother Teresa's case the process was speeded up as
she was worshipped as a saint even before she died in 1997.

PS: Mother Teresa is 5th beatified candidate from India

[Goanet]FW: Pray for the Pope !

2003-10-21 Thread Darrelle Fernandes

His Holiness is asking us to pray specifically for him.
He probably knows that he doesn't have much time left amongst us. Please
send this to as many people as possible without any embarrasment. A few
weeks ago in his Angelus to the pilgrims in St Peter's square, Pope John
Paul II asked for our prayers for him. He says that the only thing that
sustains him is the prayer of all those who remember him. Let us help
our Pope who has said so many prayers for us. Let us offer at least an
Our Father for him. Please send this e-mail to your friends. With this
small effort in a few days time millions of people will have prayed for
John Paul II and got many others to pray for him too. Let's not ever
forget the power of prayer.
