[Goanet] Appreciating Goan Cultural Practice (Part 2)
Fast forward to 1990, when I settled in the USA as a practicing physician. I met another dashing active medical person at a social event. I will call him Jim to protect his identity. I can only describe Jim as a Super Guy. He grew up the hard way in the Depression, in a small rural town of 2,000 people. His father was a coalman working the railroad. As an adolescent, in the summer, Jim also worked the rails. During World War II, Jim was in the navy and served in the Pacific. After the war, Jim put himself through medical school. He returned to the county he grew up in to start his medical practice. Jim, being a local boy, knew everything there was to know, as it related to the practical things in life - farming, animals (domestic and wildlife), fixing a home, repairing cars, government rules, regulations. You name it, Jim was a resource person. If he did not know the answer, he knew where to get it from. What was more important, Jim was more that willing to share his knowledge. His willingness to share, appeared to follow a dictum: Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality. He helped anyone who needed his assistance without taking over the project. He was the leader of the civic club, in getting speakers, coordinating voluntary work, fund raising, etc. He and his wife were the pillars of their church. When I first met Jim, he was in his early sixties, though he looked like a fifty-year old guy. He had a good medical practice. His hobby was a sheep farm; and he had a couple of sheep dogs to help coral his sheep. Jim would switch and was equally comfortable in his bow-tie and white-coat in his clinic, as he was wearing cowboy boots herding his sheep. As a medical man, twenty-five years my senior, we had a lot to talk and joke about. And we did a lot of both. Jim has long since retired from medical practice. Yet, Jim and I continue our friendship, which has blossomed to a family-like relationship. Jim and his wife still continue their active lifestyle. They no longer have their sheep farm. But they do have their sheep-dog. They still garden, are active in their church, socialize with their small circle of friends, and are in close touch with their kids and grandchildren. The computer has become their major link with the outside world. As expected, Jim also has medical problems. About five years ago, Jim started developing progressive weakness in the ankles and feet. He was seen by neurologists, physiatrists, orthopedic surgeons and others. He has gone through at least a five-thousand-dollar work-up to test and re-test his blood, muscles, nerves, nerve roots, spine and spinal cord, and brain. These tests include, blood examinations, electrical stimulation tests on his muscles and nerves, muscle and nerve biopsies, CAT and MRI scans of the spine and brain. He has been evaluated by specialists at two major University Hospitals. All that the doctors could come up with, as a diagnosis, is peripheral neuropathy from possible spinal stenosis. This is a peripheral nerve disorder caused by old-age degeneration of the spine leading to narrowing of the spinal canal and the openings through which the nerve roots exit from the spinal cord. The treatment offered to Jim was physical therapy, drugs and braces for both ankles to manage the foot drop whch he has in both legs. These treatments permit Jim to function and walk, with the reduced sensation in his legs and soles, and without tripping on his own feet. As happens with this condition, the weakness is mainly in the ankle-foot muscles, with otherwise good motor power in the other muscles of the lower limbs. As the years have gone by, and with Jim getting older, the situation has been worsening. In spite of eye surgeries, his eye sight is failing. Jim has crossed his eightieth birthday, though he continues to look much younger. Last weekend we spent some time with Jim and his wife, as we celebrated the Thanksgiving Holiday. Jim was his bright, intelligent, humorous self, keeping abreast of everything around him. Yet, Jim's neurological problem has deteriorated to the point he now has an unsteady gait. Any attempt to stand in his living room is an awkward balancin g act, till Jim supports himself or someone supports him. His wife is obviously concerned that Jimmy may fall, hurt himself and break his hip, especially at night when he gets out of bed. As Jim puts it, Between what I have, how this is progressing and what could happen to me, I have a million-dollar problem. To be continued! [Goanet] OLD GOA FEAST CELEBRATED
At the stroke of 1030 a.m Rev Fr Manuel Gomes of the Pastoral Institute of St Pius X began with a brief introduction of the theme Christian witness in the Society : Challenges of the Eucharist Kristi Govaiki Somazant: Hench Porsnm sonsvkarnchem Avhan of this years celebration which is the 500th Birth Centenary of St Francis Xavier born on 6th April 1506, at Navarre in Spain - ordained a priest at the age of 31 yrs and died at the age of 46 yrs and spread the word of God in just 15 years . Later the stream of priests entered from the precincts of the Bom Jesus Basilica at 1040 a.m. for the Eucharistic celebration by Bishop Percival Joseph Fernandes Bishop of Mumbai alongwith several others viz Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus Blasco Colaco Archbishop Stanilaus Fernandes and Abraham, Bishops Thomas Makwana Godfrey de Rosario Alwyn Baretto and Bishop Ferdinand Fonseca including our own Archbishop Emeritus Dr Raul Niclau Gonsalves and Archbishop Patriach Most Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao who introduced the several Bishops. Incidentally the large assembly of Archbishops Bishops and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus and Bishops was owing to the Western Regional Catholic Council meet and an earlier event in the State. In his homily the Bishop Fernandes who spoke in chaste Konkani and English for the benefit of the audience which included pilgrims from Portugal Spain and other parts of India, dwelt on the life of St Francis Xavier who had showed immense love for propagating the teachings of Jesus Christ. The only thing left behind by St Francis Xavier was a collection of nearly 130 letters written by him to his superiors and mentor St Ignatius de Loyola. These letters were blunt and do not have any literary niceties but it reflected his largeness of heart trust in God his meditation and prayer life. Many of the letters reflected the shocking failures of his dreams. Later Bishop Fernandes also stressed upon the importance of Sermon on the Mount which infact had an immense influence also on our own Apostle of Peace Mahatma Gandhi. At before the offetary members of the laity offered a model of a scale tagdi symbolizing justice, a House which reflects the symbol of a good Home, a banner with the words DO NOT GIVE BRIBES it is a SIN DO NOT TAKE BRIBES it is a CRIME and finally bread and wine a symbol of the mystical body and blood of Jesus Christ. The Mass which ended at 1223 p.m. was held in the specially erected shamiana. The back drop design of the stage was provided by one Mr Francisco Serrao which was tastefully designed and befitting the 500th birth centenary celebrations. During the past 10 days of the novenas the volunteers rendered great service to make the occasion a success. It must be said to the credit of all the Minister of Power Mr Digamber Kamat who ensured special lighting arrangements where the pilgrims from within and outside Goa rest and the vehicle parking areas and keeping the Old Goa without any incident of power cut. The police personnel at Old Goa Police station did a commendable job in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic, there was a word of praise to the local MLA and the Minister of Transport too. Nevertheless the buses made a quick buck charging one way fare of Rs.30/- per commuter from Margao to Old Goa via the National Highway bypass (no vehicles were allowed via Pilar ) The presence of police in plainsclothes also helped curb the light fingered gentry (pickpocketters) which are proactive on this occasion. (Given that Goa has a fair share of migrants such nuances cannot be done away with specially with the ostentious display of wealth by our own niz goencars on such festive ocassions) The PWD too had done a good job though much more needed to be done in maintaining the toilets and ensuring better water supply as there was a putrid stench emanating just around the Basilica as the sun perched itself on top. The priests and nuns too had put in tremendous grit and determination to ensure that there were no glitches and they deserved a pat too for having performed well and had scarce hours of rest and sleep. It may be noted that the Basilica was thrown open to the pilgrims from the wee hours of the morning at 0230 a.m. with the first mass at 0400 hrs until the feast Mass at 1030 a.m. followed by evening masses. The long winding beeline of pilgrims wishing to kiss the casket of the relics of the Saint (yesterday the Church precincts were closed only at 2230 hrs according to a volunteer Mr Godfrey Norton who spoke to this writer at the venue). In fact this writer observed that during the homily many of the pilgrims were in a near drowsy mood reflecting on the fact that many of them did not want to take the risk of being caught up in a traffic jam as witnessed last year. As a matter of fact almost the entire Rapid Action Force police force the volunteers and the security personnel were on their feet throughout the 10 day celebrations. It must be noted that many of
Re: [Goanet] The mess that is Goa
Hi Philomena, This is not a specific response to you but to the ongoing discussion The mess that is Goa which was very disturbing for me not 'enlightening or entertaining' as it luckily was for you. Because I tend to ramble I am enumerating a few of the many thoughts that have been scuttling in my mind for the entire week: 1) This is not a forum to bash countries which is how some discussions devolve. Case in point was an almost 2 month discussion on Canada vs. the USA. In my mind there are countries with problems and there are countries with GREATER problems. That is why I am glad that Cecil brought Canada vs. Goa to the level of Comedy Central - absurd and infantile. If traffic is a big problem in Goa and in my opinion it is a serious one than maybe targeting some of the Friday Discussion Balcoes would have been a better idea? DVDs on safe driving and why discipline, abiding to rules and small courtesies actually gets you home faster and safer could be offered? We could talk to our friends and relatives about what we have learned/seen? Its not like there are no traffic problems, road rage and DUI in large cities in the USA. Yes first world countries not just Western ones are more organized and disciplined with more emphasis on human safety, justice etc which makes for good living. Does that make them all better humans or everyone's lifestyle better? Money, smaller and or homogenous populations, stronger leaders, young cultures and combinations of many such factors have helped these countries. Also development has been at the immense cost to this planet which we are recognizing only now. 2) Selma, I don't think that Goa is devolving although what's your time line i.e. from when did it start to devolve? From the time you were laid on that table in Ribandar?!!!Then maybe you are some mutant Prophet! I would say its evolving in certain areas and devolving in others - the latter because our human foot print is immense and partly because of corruption, a very heterogeneous population which identifies more with its state/religion than with the country and fierce competition for opportunities and resources which are scare. Its for this reason that life seems so much harder than it would in sparsely populated Canada with its vast natural resources. In India, competition for professional colleges is immense unlike in North America which has a flexible education system, tons of colleges and a small young population. But its still a great time to be young in India - there are more jobs in fields like mass media and when you turn on the TV you see fresh faces with fresh outlooks unlike in the west which seems a tad jaded or in the case of my morning tryst with CNN - very trite. There are ton of News and financial TV channels in India, a lot of them peopled by young women who discuss financial markets like they just came out of internships with Amartya Sen. My young neighbor Arjun has set up his own financial consultancy - who thought Verna would have a financial guru? I have already spoken about young women scientists at the NIO in my previous posts. 3) Helping Goa. Yes there is much that some (not all!) expatriates can do for Goa/India but how about the other way around? What can Goans/Indians do for expatriates of more developed countries? I think its important that we identify these areas so that it can be a two way 'trade/charity' and thus make us all feel wanted and respected. No one wants people to drop money and give advice that often is not applicable to the situation- they want respect and like the expatriates they want to feel useful and empowered. So lets enumerate what we and our kids can get from Cecil, Aristo, Jason etc. My friend Ronnie, a chemist who lives in Toronto sent his son to the NIO for an internship and it worked really well for him. I often think that Americans would be well served by a reverse Peace Corp. where armadas of Indian women could teach 'poor' Americans how to cook healthy meals and feed families on less than 100$ a week rather than cry poverty, eat junk food and become obese. 4) Also let's not think that everyone wants to leave their home and hearth and let's do some soul searching. As RK pointed out - how different are people and their lives in different corners of the world if we compare apples with apples? Not Dharvi slums and the vast sprawl of Mississauga. When we immigrate we often get the Oh He/She is Doing So Well label! Bem analisado what exactly does that mean? It probably means something in terms of your buying power in less economically developed countries ( not so much in India anymore) and perhaps to a small extent for professions like academia and research where there is more money (at least in some fields), so more opportunities to rise up the ranks and more exposure thanks to the ease with which traveling is possible. But in the corporate world? These Oh He/She is Doing So Well people how different is working for a bank/insurance

Re: [Goanet] Fr. Agnel Needs to Be Fastracked to Sainthood -There should be no European Bias!
Dear Margaret, I certainly sympathize with your being a secularist. I have become not exactly a secularist but someone who has gone beyond the confines of institutional religion. Some features of institutional religion like caste, sidelining of women and the feminine from theological constructs and religious roles, blind acceptance of authority, and many other difficult to accept features of organized religion have led me to a more personal and a more Yoga-based spirituality. However, it is beyond our power to keep religion out of public debate and political debate. Many of the issues you mention like the Palestinian question, world hunger, even global warming and human trafficking have religious roots and connections. Having just visited Auschwitz, I agree with those who say that religion was very much at the root of the Holocaust. The Church as well as western governments acknowledge this openly. On the positive side, we need religious leaders like the Pope and the Dalai Lama or a Mahatma to speak out and provide leadership in addressing human crime and problems. Religion thus has a very definite public role. Canonizations are a sociological, public, and political issue, not merely some free fall recognition that someone is holy. Please google the sociology of canonizations and you would see that it is a public policy issue. It requires proven public devotion to someone as a saint, thus a kind of pressure from below. It is a legal process that requires the services of a Postulator or canon lawyer who collects data, evidence, documentation of miracles etc. and presents all this to the authorities at the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. But the final application or waiving of these rules and the decision to canonize someone is by arbitrary decision from above, by the Pope and the said Congregation. Those who have been writing on Goanet that the process of canonization is biased toward making mostly European saints and that lobbying for Goan candidates is one way of getting canonized saints are not far wrong. Hopefully, our Goan Church and lay leaders and august Jesuit alumni did more than wine and dine the head of the Jesuits, Fr. Kolvenbach, and the Cardinal (Poupard?) who heads the Catholic Culture centers, and asked them what they are going to do to get us a canonized Goan saint after 500 years of devoted Goan service to the Church. These are the people that can move a cause in Rome. Filomena Saraswati Giese --- m. mascarenhas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm a little confused as to why I am receiving this mail, given that (a) I am not a member of goanet, and (b) I am a secularist who prefers to keep personal religious views out of public debate, and definitely out of political debate. However, since the subject matter is in my face, let me just say that as far as I know, sainthood is not supposed to be a competition or a political race. Lobbying for OUR spiritual candidates in is not going to make anyone more or less holy. As for exerting global pressure, it seems to me there are hundreds of far more pressing issues with which to concern ourselves than whether or not a Goan is becomes a pope or a saint--global warming, for instance. The fact that an estimated 25000 people die of hunger and poverty in the world EVERY DAY. The virtual genocide of the Palestinians. The global trafficking of children for the purpose of cheap labour and/or prostitution. The dangerous descent of Iraq into civil war and the complete destabilization of the Middle East. [Goanet] The Seabird Connection
In the previously cited report in Navhind Times of Dec 3, the following information appears about Seabird in Karwar (emphasis mine): Rear Admiral Vadgaokar stated that the naval base at Karwar is presently only capable of berthing of ships and submarines and not for accommodating LARGE bodied aircraft and their operations. There is no airfield in Karwar Naval Base stated Rear Admiral Vadgaokar and further pointed out that a provision does exist in the blue print of the SECOND phase of 'Project Seabird' to have a small airfield at Karwar however it's use will be limited to operations of helicopters and small aircraft primarily to maintain supply lines to the ships and submarines. Rear Admiral Vadgaokar cleared its stand saying that the topography and geographical location of Karwar does not permit operations of LARGE bodied aircraft operations of LARGE bodied aircraft. A couple of quick points: 1. The second phase of Seabird project should be underway right now or very soon. This information is not provided either by the Navy or the media. 2. My recollection from 2003 and 2004 is that the plan was to have a 6000 foot airfield at Yenkebe, 10-20 km from Karwar. That's enough for 737s! Now all of a sudden the talk is only about helicopers and small planes. 3. What does a naval base need 'large' bodied aircraft for besides transport and maybe long range maritime patrolling? What Dabolim needs is a relocation of flight training for carrier based aircraft like Sea Harriers and, in a few years, MiG29Ks. Since the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya (ex-Gorshkov) is to be based in Karwar and not Mumbai (as the Viraat is), then carrier based flight training at Seabird would be a cinch. 4. --- Helga do Rosario Gomes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 2) Selma, I don't think that Goa is devolving although what's your time line i.e. from when did it start to devolve? From the time you were laid on that table in Ribandar?!!! -- Dear Helga, It is customary on this forum to make politically correct and patronising statements about Goa. Anyone who doesn't play alongwith the game is soon vilified. I stopped responding to this thread sometime ago because apart from the righteous rhetoric there really wasn't a substantive argument. The reason I said Goa was devolving is because I'm old enough to remember Iran. I was a very young girl at the time but I remember how overnight this once mega hub of the Middle East turned into an Islamic cultural incarceration for its people. How in the blink of an evolutionary milisecond the lives of my Iranian friends had been changed forever. It is foolhardly to believe that change in all its guises is always in linear progression. Evolution and devolution of society can be taking place simultaneously amidst a lot of noise, which at the time can seem like progress. For me, a state is in devolution when its political institutions are unable to create a stable environment and its law and order situation has deteriorated to the point where ordinary citizens can no longer place their trust in it but resort to vigilantism. These two factors are become more and more obvious in Goa. Now, the obvious response to this will be that Goa cannot be likened to Iran. Perhaps not, but can it be likened to Bihar? Stating something does not bring into question one's own loyalty and love for their mother-land. It merely catapults one into debate and seeking of avenues to reverse the situation. We must get over this need to demonise someone with a contrary view and that too with the most personal of insults. Selma Have a burning question? [Goanet] Great Men Of Goa
Following the many responses received, I would like to clarify: a) It was mentioned in the write-up that, in view of the extremely large number of eminent Goans, which could not be encompassed within the compressed space of GOANET, I had set an arbitrary cut-off line of 1950, only in extremely rares cases passing it. So, I thank those netters who were kind enough to send me suggestions for inclusion, most of them were past that date. b) The exclusion of Women fom the list was not an act of die-hard machismo. I sincerely am not aware of any Great Goan Women, PRIOR to 1950, repeat, PRIOR to 1950. If there are, I would be very happy if someone could bring the names to my attention because one has always to be learning, and if there are, and fall within accepted notions of Greatness, I would gladly apologize for the inadvertent error of ommission. --- Roland Francis wrote: A very latest relevant article from the Daily OM to which site Kevin Saldanha introduced all of us some time ago on Goanet. With all this discussion about living in Toledo and buying flats in Goa, drinking Canadian beer with shouts of Canada rocks!, studying in England and returning to Goa to make changes - or not (as in the film BORAT) and accusing people of fleeing from Goa their own their native land, one would do well to deeply reflect on this. Quote Wherever You Are Home Is Where The Heart Is Mario observes: Roland, Since you seem to have missed it entirely, the reason your post on Goa was so offensive to so many, had nothing to do with what you chose to do with your life or your assets, but your demeaning and patronizing attitude towards Goa and Goans, implying that you know what's best for Goa and all Goans, better than they do, while fleeing from the scene yourself. I was not born in Goa, and never lived there, but it is my ancestral home and I choose to build it up, not tear it down as you and some others do. Unlike you, I prefer to defer to those who live there and lend my moral and financial support to the local Goans rether than presume to lecture them on what they ought to be doing. [Goanet] SAVE GOA campaigns
Just to clarify, there are two SAVE GOA campaigns. As I understand them (please correct me if I am wrong): 1. The activity initiated by Aires is called the Save Goa Front (SGF) and is led by him and has many different objectives: shifting of Garbage site from Old Goa, transfer of the Governor S.C. Jamir, ending IFFI, among others. Aires can list all the objectives. 2. The SAVE GOA campaign launched on 3rd December is entirely separate, has a one point objective i.e. scrapping the Goa Regional Plan 2011 and is a coalition of citizens and NGO's. I know the good Floriano agrees with me that doing nothing is not an option. Even if these campaigns are not immediately successful, at least some progress will be made, if not complete success in the long run. [Goanet] Fr Agnelo's Sainthood
Hi All, Mz M. Mascarenhas Says: Lobbying for OUR spiritual candidates in is not going to make anyone more or less holy. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you catch my drift. Margaret Mascarenhas - I ask? What has Pelestinian/Israeli affairs got to do with Goan affairs? What has Shia bombing Suni in Iraq got to do with Goan Affairs? Tony Blair and his Labour Party has and are doing whatever they can; do you all think Goans can do better? than Ex President Clinton? Can any one eradicate Prostitution? Minimun wage in UK is now in force. Does that mean there are NO poor people and children in UK? Afra. Re: [Goanet] Does Francisc Newton Souza qualify as a 'Great Goan?'
Chris. Is this a rhetorical question? Is this one of those must know answers that needs to be qualitatively analyzed; furthermore to be regurgitated at Goan or for that matter Desi parties. And would it make someone sleep better if it could be proved that FN was one heck of a Great Goan. Art is big business, and people who buy art do so for a myriad reasons that most people including artists cannot always grasp. Collections buy the noveau-riche entry into certain circles, and when you have that kind of money one does strange things to get access to even stranger things. This will forever be my position, within the context of what is considered success as an artist. Now some further extrapolation: Think hedge funds, commodities and all that esoteric economic crap that looks and sounds ridiculous but someone does well in that environment. Its not about good or bad art. Most India stuff is of a decent quality. A head here or an arm there, a lot of contacts, the right people to massage and it works. So be it! And BTW, it was not for Neville Tuli, our art bigwigs would not have touched FN Souza. There were too many strikes against him. He was perpetually offending too many sad-a**ed egos in the Indian firmament. And I believe, in most cases rightly so. A good proverbial kick to the head was what he delivered to the assored cultural mandarins. His overbearing sexual persona - desire (yes, yes we Goans have it!-Its just that as 'good' Catholics most have desparately attempted to sublimate it.), over the top attitude, delusions of grandeur did not endear himself to too many. Neville Tuli oppened the eyes of the Indian Art establisment of what could be garnered financially with FNs work. Now there is a man who put hs LSE degree to good use!! Besides FNs work was never about damselles in dupattas, and bikini cholis. Perhaps it was about cosuming the other, and having them see things fom his vantage point. But when it comes to sexuality and emoting it, and that too as a Christian, none of his peers and one may resaonably say contemporaries have even got close to him. He in a sense artistically shaped our foray into what is our sordid modernity. Dolea uktea zale. Eyes opened. That does not mean things will not change. Someone else can analyze all this further. So leave it be. Let him kick some a** on our behalf, until perhaps I make it if at all in the same sordid environment. Then I will take over. Have a good Sunday Chris. Venantius --- On Sun, 03 Dec 2006 10:34:29 -0500, Chris Vaz wrote According to news reports, the works of Indian artists now dominating the market have little in common with traditional sculptures or illustrations mostly associated with South Asian art. One top seller is Francis Newton Souza, a painter born in Goa who died in 2002. Francis' paintings often feature bold portraits with abstract, distorted elements, appear to be highly influenced by Picasso. His painting.Man and Woman recently sold for $1.4 million at Christie's. [Goanet] WORLD AIDS DAY
What does WORLD AIDS DAY mean to all of us? I have not seen any interesting article or any contribution of any kind on the Goa net about this day, how it was commemorate? By way of rallies, creating awareness, distributing leaflets by educating the educated and ignorant, but touching the lives of those who have been infected and remembering those near and dear ones whom we have lost. A treat to those infected in any form by vocal groups, social activists, politicians, Govt, NGO's , church and expressing love would be remembered not only by those infected but we would be blessed by the Creator. We are fortunate to witness this World Aids Day, should it be an IFFI,cultural event, elections, etc etc we are preparing for it a year in advance but what about a day like this just comes and goes like a silent wind. We only get up from our sleep when our kids succumb to such dreadful diseases because we did not educate them on this disease. When i read a lot of mudslinging articles on the net , it pains to see that such efforts could be used for such WORLD AIDS DAYS not for mudslinging but for building our youth for a better tommorrow. [Goanet] G.O.A. (U.K.) St Francis Xavier's Feast.
Sunday 3rd December, getting ready for the Feast day celebrations, my wife never fails to disappoint me! Arrive 10 minutes late, hey, but no sweat, I had already attended another SFX feast day celebration in Osterley, on Saturday. Guess what - the mass hasn't started, I am now thinking my wife is destined for sainthood. The mass was concelebrated, Rev. Fr. Oliver Antao was the main celebrant, assisted by a newly inaugurated priest who came down from Rome - Rev. Fr. Joseph D'Costa. Both Pillar Society priests, which was appropriate - SFX's very own order. The Goan Musicial Society Choir, performed on the day. It was the first day of Advent and the Gospel was read accordingly. The preacher, Rev Fr. D'Costa, in fiery tongue and very animated, described SFX's trials and tribulations - Goa should be prepared to receive Fr. D'Costa, who is very enthusiastic and fiery - surely, touched by the Holy Spirit. There were bookmarks distributed at the end of Mass, to celebrate, the G.O.A.'s Ruby Anniversary, in conjunction with the Feast day. Onwards, to the Hall, next door, for the celebrations and dance. The Directors were very welcoming and from the onset this created a comfortable setting ! The Disco was very good , Nite Life - Xavier Alfonso, who gave us non stop dancing and variety to boot. One woman was trying to teach Fr. Oliver the Cha cha cha, which he accomplished pretty well! I am so glad, that the G.O.A. has kept up the tradition of holding SFX's feast day celebrations, which in fact, was first started by them many years ago. I remember in the dire days, of rebellion, during my term of Office, when all were deserting ! One of our Directors was telling us to cancel our function, as she was having one in South London. The loyal Directors categorically said no and carried on. Many to this day remember the event as one of the best SFX's celebrations ever. There was free snacks provided and the music was, vintage Billy Vaughn. I was asked about the loss that we made at the SFX do, at an A.G.M. - par for the course for some members. I told them there was no loss - what about, how much we paid for the disco ? Made me smile - I was now in the big league, even though the music was provided F.O.C. by me! Madam Director, has since been kicked out of the committee at her Church. The G.O.A. has survived another day, to continue the long tradition. We had a very enjoyable SFX celebration only to be marred, at the end, by one drunk who was f' ing and blinding, at my wife. There was a Director present, who asked the man to move on, to no avail. If people can't behave themselves, I think the Directors should take these people to task. I am very sure, if it had been me, who had transgressed, there would have been no leniency. -- DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes.
