[Goanet] A wicked tale (of two airports)
The challenge of devising a two-airport system for Goa may qualify as a "wicked" management problem. (John C. Camillus, "Strategy as a wicked problem", Harvard Business Review, May 2008)http://custom.hbsp.com/b02/en/implicit/viewFileNavBeanImplicit.jhtml?_r equestid=69305 In a nutshell, according to the author, "a wicked problem has innumerable causes, is tough to describe and doesnt have a right answer". In Goa's case, the latter arises from a lack of not only any real precedents for two airport systems in the Indian context but also any readily available information on analogous situations abroad (currently or historically) which, on the face of it, are numerous. We are literally flying into uncharted territory. To complicate matters, Goan media (including electronic ones) seems to be extremely uptight of late about this subject even though it is ineluctably tied to Goa's future . Everyone seems tongue tied about managing two airports "jointly" (even if formally under separate ownership) for some unknown reason. To make any progress with the wicked problem, every ounce of knowledge has to be tapped and mobilised. For this to happen, the Knowledge Paradox has to be overcome first. Pithily stated it reads: "Those who speak dont know and those who know dont speak." For practical purposes it has to be elaborated slightly as: "Those who speak dont know (the ultimate answer) and those who know (even a very little) dont speak". What are your personal views on two conjoint airports (Dabolim civil enclave AND Mopa airport) for Goa? 2. If you were perfectly in a position to do so, how would you "manage" Mopa airport project (design, plan, finance, build etc) and its subsequent operation as well as regulation to co-exist in a mutually beneficial way with Dabolim civil enclave (including the latter's upgradation and expansion) for, say, twenty (20) years into the future? Feel free to speculate as you deem fit. Thanks.
[Goanet] Fwd: Letter to the Editor
Subject: Migrant Vote Banks If the BJP is really serious about Migrant Vote Banks, can they go after all of them in Goa i.e. Margao, Sancoale, Chimbel etc and particularly the St Inez slums/vote bank which was saved from destruction by local politicians; because of a "missing file" in the Panjim Municipality. The BJP should propose a bill on restricting political power to migrants for at least 25 years and work towards reversing all migrant voter frauds via a thorough investigation; only then will the talk have some credibility and of course my support. [Goanet] Food bill: April 2004 to 2007
Three cheers to Aam Admi Government for spending, rather donating including pocketing, Rs 1,34,16,340 during April 2004 to 2007, which works out to Rs 12,252 a day. This appears to be cabinet decision to keep Truism Industry of Goa alive. If not, will the chief secretary of Goa explain on this huge spending of Goa government? I need not ask this question to Mr. CM for if asked he will sit to study this problem when the exam is already over and more because he is still studying the present turmoil that took place in Margao. [Goanet] Anti-Goan Identity Movement
Dear Arwin Count me in as well.Once for all, let us destroy this myth of Goan Culture and Identity. It will save me answering questions about goa and its unique culture whenever i meet people from different parts of the world and Indians themselves. Let all the down trodden Indians from those failed states and those so called minorities who are supposed be persecuted? and whose numbers are growing faster than the majority, come and settle down in Goa.They can occupy all the goverment and communidade land free of charge. Of course, the government can build plenty of housing boards as well with free elctricty and water supply. The rich Indians can cut all the hills, convert all the agicultural land and have? mansions and villas with swimming pools all over. They can also bring in labour intensive industries as they will have plenty of manpower. The Government can legalise Gambling and prostitution as well. Stop celebrating all the cultural events. No more festa, zatra, carnival, shigmo, tiatros and nataks. No fish curry rice, eat roti and dal.No more wearing shirt, pant, shoes and dresses. Do not immigrate to Canada,USA,Europe or Australia. They will brand you as Anti-National. Then, all those Tourists-both Foreign and Indian- can experience a truely Unique Goan Culture!? [Goanet] COMMENT: The sword saga ...
Herald, Editorial, 8 July 2008 The sword saga There are several deeply disturbing aspects about the seizure of 17 swords in a truck parked at Moti Dongor on Thursday. The police did a good job to swing into action swiftly, search a large number of houses on Moti Dongor and then nab the culprits, led by Bashir Shaikh, a furniture dealer who was also an accused in burglary and assault cases, and who lives at Moti Dongor. However, the matter deserves a deeper look, as there are several loose ends that need to be unravelled. Bashir apparently bought the swords before last month's communal violence in Margao and the Housing Board, which he says were for his community's self-defence. They were bought from one Jagdish Singh from Punjab, who brought them from his native state via Belgaum. But Jagdish and his father are both absconding, and it is important that he must be held to learn the whole truth. For, Jagdish Singh is the only one who can tell the police how many swords were actually bought, and so that they know how many are still out there. The circumstances indicate that the swords were transported from the rented flat in which Jagdish Singh was staying to Bashir's furniture shop, a distance of just 30 metres, in a Tata Indigo car owned by one Faroque Shaikh, an associate of Bashir. Why use a car to travel such a short distance, unless the load was very large? Then, the consignment was transferred to the truck in a Hyundai Accent car belonging to one Floyd Coutinho, who also has a criminal case pending against him. Coutinho was also found in possession of another Innova car, owned by Bashir's associate Mohinuddin, who bought the truck under an assumed name, Ameen Shaikh, with a fake address in Benaulim. To enable Mohinuddin to buy the truck, one Irfan Kachi, a computer hardware engineer, forged or altered an election card in that name with Mohinuddin's photograph. The police are also on the look out for a tax consultant, Vinod, who is believed to have helped Mohinudin to obtain a PAN card. It doesn't all quite add up. Were the swords moved to the truck before or after the violence in Margao? The question is important, because miscreants burnt down Bashir's furniture shop in the early hours of the morning following the violence. Since no burnt swords are reported to have been found in the debris, had they been moved before the incident? Or is there something we are missing here? What was the need for buying a truck under a fake name by some hi-tech manipulation, transporting the swords by a circuitous route that seems to make little sense, and then leaving the swords in a parked truck atop Moti Dongor? If Bashir was trying to arm his community members for their self defence as he seems to have claimed, why go through all this for just 17 swords? That would mean an expenditure of tens of thousands of rupees for each sword! On the other hand, if he was trying to abandon some leftover swords from a larger stash, why leave the truck at Moti Dongor, where the needle of suspicion was bound to point at the members of his community? There are pieces missing in this jigsaw puzzle, and until the police find them all, the full and correct picture is not going to emerge. In the volatile and charged atmosphere of Margao – where a simple rumour can set off a stampede – it is vital that the entire truth about this episode be known. The Margao Police must make it their business to find out. * * * FAKE PHOTO (in Gomantak Times, July 5, 2008) MARGAO, Could the photographs fo seized swords, published by the media, be 'fake'? It may be recalled that the police had seized approximately 17 "new shiny" swords (four small and 13 big) after they stumbled upon an Ashok Leyland truck, GA01 W5785, that was lying abandoned for several days on the slopes of Monte Dongor, Margao. But the photographs published surprised Margao DySP Umesh Gaonkar, especially since he had resued to accept the fervent appeals of the reporters to show them the swords the previous day. When a section of aggrieved journos called on DySP Gaonkar, he denied any suggestion that the photos had been leaked to a selective media person and termed them as 'fake'. Sources further state that the swords in the published photograph had been obtained from a prominent drama company in the Margao city and point out to the 'blunt' swords seen in the published photograph as proof of their charges.

[Goanet] Subject : The ills Goans face!
There is a saying: “When the cat and mouse agree, the grocer is ruined.” Goans are facing all ills because the Law is not being enforced, either due to political interference, personal gains, lethargy or ignorance. Many recent happenings give a sorry picture of the status the Law and order is handled in the State. Take the latest case of a Government contractor “Hamza” hailing from Kerala, having killed and cut the body of a 14 year old maid at a Margão flat and buried it at Mollem in December 2006. Were the Police aware of it for the last one and half year? When the Kerala C.B.I. arrested the contractor and his wife after a sustained public outcry in Kerala, and the beans were spilled, the C.B.I. along with Forensic experts from Kerala; exhumed the remains, and investigated the Margão flat; but our Goa Law enforcement Department ignored the whole process. Why? But present throughout were his other seven brothers, all Goa government contractors. The contractor moreover had the chic to state that, had the case been registered in Goa, nothing would have happened to him as he had the right connections. This is the impression criminals have of Goa’s governance. Take the case of the senior citizen Menino D’ Silva from Aquem, Margão. He had leased his open space for furniture sale to Bashir Shaikh of ‘Monte Hill slums’ who is arrested in the swords case. The lease had expired in February 2008 and he wouldn’t move out and threatened the senior citizen with dire consequences. In spite of complaints, the police provide protection to the Migrant Bashir’s sale site, until citizens forced the Municipality to raze it down. Is materialistic value more than human life to the Police? The case of homicides and suicide at Kalay was another incident as a result of police incompetence although a similar case occurred a couple of months prior, wherein a husband was done to death by the wife and paramour and dumped in river Sal. When a wife is having illicit relationship and complains to the police against the husband of a threat to her life; is arresting the husband not an infuriating provocation? Where is Governance? Where is the innocent Goan to seek justice? It is very clear that criminals have made Goa their haven. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão. Margão. _ Searching for the best deals on travel? [Goanet] You May Already Be There.
A boat docked in Majorda. A tourist from Mumbai complimented the Goan fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. 'Not very long,' answered the fisherman. 'But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?' asked the Mumbaicar. The Goan fisherman explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family. The Mumbaicar asked, 'But what do you do with the rest of your time?' 'I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the Tinto, have a drink with my friends, play the guitar, sing a few songs... I have a full life.' The Mumbaicar interrupted, 'I have an MBA from IIM and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.' 'And after that?' asked the Goan. 'With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Panjim, or even Mumbai. From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.' 'How long would that take?' asked the Goan. 'Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,' replied the Mumbaicar. 'And after that?' 'Afterwards? Well my Friend, That's when it gets really interesting,' chuckled the Mumbaicar, 'When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!' 'Millions? Really? And after that?' asked the Goan. 'After that you'll be able to retire, live on the beach in Majorda, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings doing what you like with your buddies.' 'With all due respect sir, but that's exactly what I am doing now. So what's the point wasting 25 years?' asked the Goan. Moral of the story: Know where you're going. You may already be there. [Goanet] Rethinking the Goan 'Revolution'
Rethinking the Goan 'Revolution' (Published in the Gomantak Times 9 July 2008) Some weeks ago, in the heat of the summer, I heralded a revolutionary moment. As citizens took to the Gram Sabhas, I was sure, that coming on the heels of the opposition to the Regional Plan, we could expect revolutionary change in Goa. Via our raised voices in the Gram Sabhas, we would challenge a State that withdraws into silence when it comes to safeguarding our interests. We would also challenge a State that was colluding with the forces of global capital, as they sought to enrich themselves even as they pushed us into poverty. This challenge, would involve the assertion of the right of the people to ultimately determine the location of projects in their immediate locality. It would involve the assertion of people to the recognition of their basic rights to life and livelihood over the rights of speculative capital and obscenely disproportionate profits. It would, above all, lay the foundation for a reorganized State marked by dialogue at all levels, rather than diktats from the top. Reviewing events unfold however, I have for sometime now, been contemplating if it is possible that I erred in heralding this revolutionary moment. Was it a possible misdiagnosis, where what we see occurring in Goa is no revolution at all, but a *fitna?* An Arabic word used in Islamic legal thought, *fitna *has a wide range of meanings – schism, sedition, defection, desertion- invariably used as a term of disapproval. The disapproval was the result of Islamic jurists who viewed negatively the crumbling of the Caliphate and the establishment of regional and local powers. In a marvelous work on the Maratha *svarajya* however, Andre Wink argues that we should understand *fitna* as a socio-political upheaval, one that in the original context* *implied the 'forging of alliances' and was the 'normal mechanism of state-formation'. In the context that Wink examines -the Maratha challenge to the Mughal Empire - he argues that the Maratha *svarajya* was not a rupturing of the Mughal Empire, or a movement in protest. It was in fact a *fitna*; a re-altering of alliances between the Maratha state and the Mughal empire, with greater powers now being handed out to the regional power. The *fitna* was a mechanism of state-formation that saw 'management by conflict', rather than the 'management of conflict', as the key to political success. Like the *fitna* a revolution also involve upheaval and conflict. However, it demands more than these aspects of instability. The Persian and Urdu word for revolution, *Inquilab*, allows us some insight into the demands that a revolution makes of us. *Inquilab* which signifies an overthrow has as its root the Arabic word for heart, *qalb*. It is the constant act of the heart, of overturning, pulsating, pumping with blood that allows *qalb* to be used as a root for *inquilab*. *Qalb* has however, also been translated to mean the mind, the spirit, or something that is innermost, something deep within. All of these multiple meanings rather than contradict each other, contribute to our understanding of what a revolution, or *inquilab* really is, or must be. It asks us to get to the heart or the essence of a matter. It asks us to turn things around, not only systematically, but to also view things from as many perspectives as possible. A third meaning, is akin to the act of ploughing, where we are exhorted to turn the soil of society, the soil of culture, or the soil of our soul. Those of us familiar with Christian symbolism will realize that it is only if the soil is turned, that is able to receive the seed that heralds new life. And so it is with the revolution that requires an overturning, not merely for the sake of opposition, but for the creation of a new order. This new order eventually asks not for superficial changes but for changes deep within the innermost recesses of our soil, and likewise of society. Goa, I would now correct myself, is in the throes not of revolution, but of a *fitna*. Consider the fact that rather than focus on issues of equity, what we constantly seem to get drawn to are issues of outsiders/migrants taking over our land. If this is, as many of us keep arguing, not the real issue, why is it that we keep coming back to the outsider issue? One way of explaining this is to understand the events in Goa as born from the challenge being posed to our internal elite by a national and global elite. The social order in Goa is changing, and changing drastically. Old hierarchies are increasingly under challenge. One has only to look at the manner in which former establishmentarian newspapers that would block out significant events in Goa are being forced to change tactic owing to the arrival of the Times of India. If mining money was earlier being used to control state and society in Goa, today this monopoly is being challenged by money that pours in from the 'outside'. If the local elite is to continue to re

[Goanet] Colours of the rainbow : getting in petals from another world (Lisa Monteiro, in Gomantak Times)
Colours of the rainbow : getting in petals from another world Lisa Monteiro talks to the Moniz family that is working hard to sprinkle yellow, white and pink petals on the roads of Curtorim and other parts of Goa. What better way to give back to Goa than to keep it green and grow more plants! Igidio Moniz, originally from Curtorim, an agronomist (expert in soil management and field-crop production) now based in Brazil, still has his heart set here and is introducing the 'Ipe' tree to Goa. See [http://www.tropicalhardwoods.com/htm/tropical_hardwoods/ipe.htm] or [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabebuia] His idea is 'to add to the landscape of already beautiful Goa'. The Ipe flowers that come in unusual hues of yellow, white and pink will give Curtorim a vibrant look. The seeds of the tree were sent straight from Brazil where the tree is widely found. "A fully-grown Ipe tree can grow upto a whopping ten metres. The trunk of the tree has a width of 40 cms. The branches tend to spread far and wide so there has to be a gap of six metres between each tree. Wood from Ipe is very heavy and of high quality", says Joaquim Moniz, Igidio's brother, based in Mumbai. The wood is resistant to water and is very difficult to cut. It has great durability and can withstand adverse conditions. It will take five to seven years for the tree to bloom. The predictable bloom cycle will last from August to October. The tree will bloom once a year and when it does, exotic flowers will replace all the leaves. Says Igidio's sister Carol, "With this maiden attempt to introduce Ipe, we want to add to the flora and fauna of Goa." How will the family manage the finances and upkeep of the tree? "The plant has to be looked after like a child- watered and treated. We don't expect the municipality to help us, so we'll be coming down from Bombay often to check on the plants. Igidio will help out when he comes to Goa every year. Local MLA Reginaldo Lourenco is supporting us in a big way too and he'll take care of watering the saplings," ensures Carol. With three hundred saplings in the garden of the Moniz family, ready to be planted around Curtorim, Rachol and Raia, it won't be long before Goa's roads are adorned with this vibrant tree. The Moniz family can't wait to see the effervescent colours of the trees brighten up Curtorim. Finally what's the idea or message that they're trying to convey? Carol's husband, Dr Linus Paul states, " We want to express our love for Goa and create a legacy so that it sets a precedent for others also to do it." "We want to germinate this plant and make Goa a beautiful place for future generations". Add Carol and Joaquim in unison. Contact the writer: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Goanet] Religious Riots in Margao
Ref: Religious Riots in Margao From time immemorial people have been divided on the basis of religion, caste, race and color, If you look at the history of Israel, from the conception and inception of Israel, there has always been hatred between the Palestinians and the Israelis, is it any better now ? If we think otherwise, we are kidding ourselves. Hitler, the butcher of the Jews, even after decades after his death, you think there is no racism in Germany ? What about the KKK ? Don't they still think they are still the superior race ? The slave trade era has long gone, are the blacks accepted as equals even today ? The Mexicans and the other migrants from the poorer latin countries, they may be US citizens but are they really treated equal at all times, the world over it's "the black's" of Africa, India and Sri Lanka, "the brown's" of the middle east, "the yellow's" of the far east and of course the superior "white's" of Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand. Has anything changed over the years ? Apartheid has vanished from South Africa, or has it really ? In India, since time of the Maharajas, the caste system that was followed, to the post partition riots, to the Gujarat riots, to the Mumbai train blast, have things changed ? Will humanity really be tolerant ? With upheavals all over the world and in India, Goa and Goans lived peacefully in total ambiance with one another and nature. The first rush of blood came during the time of the opinion polls, Judas wanted to sell Goa to the Maharashtrains but then we had Dr. Jack Sequeira to thank for, then started the influx of migrants from Belgaum and Hubli, thanks to Mr. Babu Naik, for inaugurating the vote bank of the Congress Party in Salcette, then who will forget the official language issue, the second attempt to link Goa with Maharashtra by the MGP, BJP and the saffron brigade, that was the first real uprising since liberation wherein like the previous occasion Goa and Goans stood firm and united and made Konkanni the official language, did things end there ? No, by then with the influx turning to mass exodus (from south) of migrants spreading to Vasco and Sanguem, there was no stopping of the Sanguem riots and now it has gone so far that a casual pass to the fairer sex has led to a couple of riots in Margao. Is this the same Goa that we lived in the 60's and the 70's ? The BJP and the Saffron brigade will go to the limit and leave no stone unturned to pull the Hindu majority vote on their side, where as the Congress will continue to encourage influx of minority migrants to boost their ever rising vote bank, the Congress knows the Christian minority is theirs for the taking, what can the Christians do "the lesser evil is the better evil" Getting back to the start of my write up, the Palestine issue, is it political ? Yes, It's the same as Kashmir, and are they serious to resolve it ? No, if these issues are resolved, what other major issues will there be for the politicians to fool the people and pull in their votes or support, or if there is peace who is going to buy arms from America and Europe ? The recent Presidential nominations in the US, Obama's nomination, has the most powerful democracy in the world and the most developed country in the world gone on color ? If you look at it carefully the answer is there for all to see. "Politics is the last resource for scoundrels", haven't they proved it over and over again ? It is up to us to put a stop to all this. Be one at the next election reject both the Congress as well as the BJP and their saffron brigade. Re: [Goanet] June 18, references and facts!
Hi Paulo, Perhaps I missed your response to this post. Or perhaps you missed my prior posting. I hope your responses to these questions will help you not repeat your often quoted claims on Goanet. You make a good point for Goans to know their history irrespective which side (if they had a side, or if they were born) when the events occurred.. I have tried reading and analyzing your perspectives. Hope you can elucidate and educate us further. Here are some questions to your statements which you keep repeating again and again. PCD: However, that does not mean that we Goans should not know the truth about it and how it ended the dream of independence to so many Goans that truly aspire it. GL: How many Goans aspired for 'independence" (as you define it)? Did they form a political party? WHO were their leaders? WHAT did they do? WHERE, WHEN and HOW did they struggle to get that "dream of independence"? What was the name of this group or political movement or political party that sought to make that dream into reality? Did they have any conventions and pass any resolutions? Please specifically tell us what did Froilano and Brut Da Costa do beyond scripting a few paragraphs (not dissimilar to what we are doing on Goanet). Did they contemplate / undertake any actions like the East Timorese? PCD: If he (Nehru) was so confident that Goans wanted to unite with India (like he himself claimed several times) why did he deny a plebiscite on the issue? GL: Who made the request for a plebiscite and what did they do to demand and did they struggle to get it? Was there any actions like Goans who worked hard to get, and succeeded in getting an "Opinion Poll"? Did any political group participate in the first election in Goa under a "Plebiscite platform"? If not, why not? Did the plebiscite seekers persist in their demands with physical actions and personal sacrifices? Can you please educate us-Goans about our recent history? PCD: The refusal of a plebiscite took away the democratic will of the Goan people and ended the dream of independence of the real freedom fighters such as Froilano de Mello at al who died saying "Patria ingrata!" (ungrateful motherland). GL: Froilano is often quoted by luso-Goans as making the case for independent Goa including the letter he wrote to Salazar. Can you quote the exact paragraph in his long letter to Salazar where he made such a demand? The part of the letter from Froilano to Salazar which was posted on the internet, was a most gratuitous script that I have read. It went on and on and on. I doubt Salazar read more than three paragraphs considering it was a repetition of the same lap-dog theme and a total waste of time. So, please post the specific part of the letter where Froilano de Mello demands "independence" for Goa. Thanks. Did Froilano de Mello return to Goa after 1961 to make the demand and lead a struggle for plebiscite? Is not "Patria ingrata!" (ungrateful motherland) an oxymoron? This likely outlines the confused mindset of those who came up with this phrase and those who used it. Perhaps that is why they had little support. Yet, kudos to these "freedom fighters". At least they realized that India was their motherland. Now is it not time for the children of these armchair "freedom fighters" to come to the same conclusion about India being their motherland, even though they are sitting in an easy-chair far far away? PCD: Fait acomplait should not prevent us from knowing the other side of history! And Eugene, you do not need to be pro-Portuguese or pro-Indian to learn about the other side of history. All you need is to read! GL: Fully agree. A little common-sense analysis after the reading would not hurt. When one merely reads and regurgitates other peoples' writings as quotes, one is substituting one person's bias with another person's bias. It does not prove the fact. I hope we can keep this to a factual analysis of actual history. I hope other Goans interested in history will participate. After your response to these questions, perhaps the Goanetters can decide whether I should hold on to the Dr. Spin Award or return it back to you, as it may be more suitable on your mantel piece.:=)) Regards, GL - Paulo Colaco Dias However, that does not mean that we Goans should not know the truth about it and how it ended the dream of independence to so many Goans that truly aspire it. [Goanet] Ruins of St. Augustine Church at Old Goa -
Forwarded by Camilo Fernandes, Manchester - source www.mangalorean.com Ruins of St Augustine Church at Old Goa By Ramesh Lalwani, New Delhi [ Published Date: July 5, 2008 ] Old Goa has the credit of having a number of churches which have been included in UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Among these are the ruins of St. Augustine Church which was perhaps the largest one in Goa . The Church of St Augustine was constructed by the joint efforts of 12 Augustian Friars after they arrived in Goa on 3rd September 1572 AD. They built the church on the Holy Hill at Old Goa. The construction of the church was completed by 1602 AD. A ban was imposed by the Portuguese government against the Augustines. The church and the convent thereafter were deserted. The ruins of 46-metre high Bell Tower without the bell can be seen from some distance and attract attention of visitors. Five storied arched belfry tower built of laterite formed part of facade of the church facing east. This tower is one of the four towers of St. Augustine Church. The Church had eight richly adorned chapels and four altars and a convent with numerous cells. The ruins of chapels, altars and extensive convent with numerous cells can be seen even today around the tower. The bell was first placed in the Fort Aguada Light House, where it remained from 1841 to 1871 AD. Finally it was put in the church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception at Panaji in 1871 AD and it is still in working condition. The remaining tower is one of four towers shown in sketch below. It is reported that the convent was used for missionary and charity work by the charitable institution of the Misericordia .The church buildings finally fell due to neglect and resulted in the collapse on 8 September 1842. The Government appropriated the property and sold the materials of the remains of the church in 1843. The facade and half of the tower fell in 1931. Archeological Survey of India has undertaken excavation as well restoration work of this monument which has being going on for some years now. When I last visited in January 2006 I noticed lot of activity. I was very keen to present here some old pictures of this massive structure. After lot of search I located a blog by Mr. Jose F P Lourenco - He writes "I've saved the best photograph for last. I found this in my late uncle's chest while cleaning the musty old attic. It's from a 'Souvenir da Velha Cidade de Goa' by the venerable photographers Souza & Paul. Re: [Goanet] Casinos are not welcome in Goa but...
Matka is illegal. Hence the demand is to implement the provisions relating to matka in the Goa Gambling Act. Casinos were made legal in 1995 .Hence the demand is to repeal the amendment made to the Goa Gambling Act which permits casinos. Both the provisions are in the same law. It is wrong to deduce that matka is welcome because people are fighting casinos. Alcoholism and matka gambling are priority issues for women, especially, the rural and urban poor. We are in constant battle with the authorities to get the excise laws and law relating to matka implemented. NGOs get lots of suggestions as to the issues they should take up, but very few volunteers who will spare time or skills for the causes. The primary responsibility of implementing the law lies with the government authorities. NGOs cannot usurp the powers of the police. If the government does not pay heed to the NGOs, what is the alternative? Re: [Goanet] The Swords are a dangerous precedent
Dear Selma, Reference to your original post 'Open letter to Goan Catholics', I thought I saw acute sarcasm there. Therefore my reply. Since the thread continues, I detect acute 'paranoia' instead of sarcasm, which is very undesirable for Goa and Goans. There was a time when the who is who in Goa (prominent Goans) came to terms with Gujarat's 'Godra', when we heard remarks like " Goa is Goa", Godras cannot happen in Goa. But that laisez faire attitude was jolted with the Curchorem-Savordem riots. There was a special meet called by the secular goans at the TB Cunha hall post Curchorem-Savordem riots in order to find ways and meams to heal the wounds created by those riots- the first of its kind in Goa (I mean riots). When late Ulhas Buyao took the mike, he was going into the cause of the riots. But he was stopped short by Aurora Couto explaining that this meet was not to go into the cause of the riots but to help the victims. That is when I stood up and let Aurora Couto have it to the extent that I accused her of trying to powder the boil which has surfaced and oozing , superficially instead of getting to the roots to find out why the boil is there in the first place. What happened later was history which I have already talked about on many occasions. What is happening in Goa, as in the rest of India, is nothing but a COMUNNAL MASTER MIND at work directly related to RSS-BJP in Goa on the one side and the Maha appeasement of the illegal vote-bank on the other by the CONGRESS. Both these guys are eying the seat of power for their common goal.. to loot Goa. Advani showed the way that by destroying the Babri Masjid, he could bring the BJP to power. They want to repeat the scene since these people have nothing else in its place. Just the hollow, resounding tin -pot. The solution is simple. Throw both these guys out from the soil of Goa, and there, everything will be alright, automatically. There are many who will be incensed with what I have said above. But the fact remains a fact. Our temples are getting desecrated. This is the sign of the impatience for the out of power RSS-BJP. I would first look at the RSS-BJP angle before taking pot shot elsewhere. Goa has never seen any place of worship desecrated before in the more recent past. Why only now? And, the eve teasing scene etc. is just the excuse for giving vent to the impatience of being out of power for the BJP and its allies. And the equally communal and corrupt Congress is cosying up to it to consolidate its vote-bank galore. Selma, do not exhort Goans to flee Goa. They do not want to. They will remain firmly rooted in Goa and see the end of these two charlatans from Delhi along with their accomplices who are fishing in the murky waters left behind by these two. Goans shall not be taken for a ride, even if there may be a handful of them, the bonafide and true to the word GOAN. floriano goasuraj - Original Message - From: "Carvalho" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 3:18 PM Subject: [Goanet] The Swords are a dangerous precedent My dear fellow Goans. Two days ago I made a perhaps shocking post urging Goan Catholics to leave Goa. Now, let explain why I am so alarmed. There are times in our lives, when even the most secular of us cannot find hope in India. What little hope was left in me has dissipated reading some of the emails that have cropped up on Goanet. The swords are an extremely dangerous precedent. Tensions are already high in Goa. There is a virulent fear that we are being over-run by migrants. There are a number of extremist groups operating on both sides of the aisle. I hope and pray that another Gujarat is not in the offing in Goa. My fear is this :the next time, a pretense such as "eve-teasing", a term coined wholly by Indians and used only in the Indian subcontinent, to spark off a communal riot, then rest assured someone will spot a sword being wielded in the crowds. Whether this sword is real, mythical or the figment of someone's alcohol-fueled imagination will be the debate only after mass mayhem has ensued as a result of this sighting. Like I said there is always the hope that things will change in Goa and India, but that hope grows more distant everyday. selma

[Goanet] Delhi Accommodation - a query
Thanks toll all (8 feedbacks received so far) Just remembered that I posted an information in July 2006 about the New Goa Niwas at Delhi. don't know if this project is completed or not.. check this out Goa Niwas (spacious new guest house coming up soon) Foundation Stone for new Goa Niwas at Chanakyapuri in New Delhi laid on July 5. CM Rane and PWD Minister Dhavlikar and Union Minister for Urban Development Jailpal Reddy etc were present -The main feature of the project will be it’s Goan architecture with Mangalore tiles roofing etc -The total area of the building is 4100sqmtrs including the basement. -It is of ground plus three structure building. -Ground floor with main entrance, lobby, shops, Gym and kitchen/dining and small swimming pool with landscape. -Basement with parking, generator, storage, laundry ec -First and second floor of the building with rooms with attached toilets and four dormitories. -Two of the four dormitories are of 60 sqmtrs each and the other two of 35sqmtr each. -The capacity of the dormitory is of 40 beds. -There are 20 rooms accommodating 40 beds on first and second floor -Third floor is exclusively for VVIPs consists of five suites comprising of living, dining and bedroom with attached toilets. -Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 9 crore JoeSays: What is Goa Niwas or for that matter Goa Bhavan or Goa Sadan ? It is nothing but a hotel/guest house exclusively for Goans in other states of India. It is run and managed by Goa Government We have, at present, one in Bombay (near Juhu) and one in New Delhi near Lodi Gardens. How one can book accommodation there ? Before you leave Goa, you will have to book it though Under Secretary (Secretariat) by filling in the prescribed forms (Don’t know if this has changed now as we used to book about 15 years ago) They have a reservation chart there and book/reserve accordingly. One can book pvt. attached rooms or dormitory (as per the availability). Tariffs are generally low. When we booked pvt rooms in both Goa Sadan and Goa Bhavan, on arrival, we never got our pre-booked rooms and were give dormitory instead. When asked, we were told the pvt. rooms were taken by top Govt. officers (and this was not true most of the times). === [EMAIL PROTECTED] for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa __ Not happy with your email address?. [Goanet] The Swords are a dangerous precedent
My dear fellow Goans. Like I said there is always the hope that things will change in Goa and India, but that hope grows more distant everyday. selma
Re: [Goanet] Fw: letter to editor
Soter, I couldn't agree with you more. The truth is that we Goans have been ambushed in our own homeland. We will soon be outnumbered. This is the reality. Then we will lose our land, our culture, our language and ultimately our identity. All I ask is not to give up. We have to continue to rise to defend our rights. People cannot be afraid to speak up!! This is regarding the above. as far as I know there is Goa Sadan on Amrita Sher Gil Marg. Also Y.W.C.A. International Guest House on Parliament Street. 'Last Bus to Vasco' was written on a bus journey from Panjim to Vasco in 1997. In the early days when this poem was written, the last bus to Vasco from Panjim bus stand used to leave Panjim as early as 8 pm. Whatever one's business in Panjim or beyond the river Mandovi one was always anxious to make it in time to catch the last bus home to Vasco – or risk getting left behind. http://lastbustovasco.blogspot.com/2008/05/last-bus-to-vasco.html *Last Bus to Vasco* *-Brian Mendonca* ** I Cool zephyrs of night Under the canopy of the western sky, Everything dissolves Places, smells, memories, distances. [Goanet] Catholic Charity Trust Celebrates Silver Jubilee And St. Thomas Day
Catholic Charity Trust Celebrates Silver Jubilee And St. Thomas Day By SAR NEWS AHMEDABAD, Gujarat (SAR NEWS) -- Snehadeepam, a public charitable trust of Kerala Catholics under the St. Ignatius Loyola Parish Church in Ahmedabad, celebrated the organisation's silver jubilee, July 6. Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Thrissur in Kerala, who was the chief guest at the celebration, applauded the services of Snehadeepam. "Though I am coming here for the first time, I feel at home with your love and hospitality. Malayalis here are a very loving people," he said. The occasion also saw the celebration of the feast of St. Thomas. The twin celebrations started with a solemn procession from St. Ignatius Loyola Church to the Diamond Jubilee Auditorium of St. Xavier's Loyola School on the same campus. Volunteers carried a big statue of St. Thomas and many ornamental umbrellas in procession. Jesuit Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes of Gandhinagar and a dozen Malayali priests from the four dioceses of Gujarat joined the procession. The Holy Kurbana (Mass)in the auditorium was led by Archbishops Thazhath and Fernandes. Archbishop Thazhath spoke about the significance of jubilee in the Bible in the context of Snehadeepam's celebrations and also the feast of St. Thomas. "St. Thomas not only came to South India and spread Christianity in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, but has also gave us the greatest expression of our faith, 'My Lord and My God'," Archbishop Thazhath said. The Jubilee Hall was packed with about a thousand people from St. Ignatius Loyola Parish and the neighbouring St. Xavier's Parish at Navrangpura, and other parishes of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Archbishop Fernandes recalled his long association with the Malayali Catholics in Gujarat while he was the parish priest of the Camp Parish and as the bishop of Ahmedabad for 17 years. He then became the archbishop of Gandhinagar Archdiocese in 2002. Archbishop Fernandes stressed the need for Christian life to be centered around Christ and the unity of all Christians -- professing one faith, baptism and Holy Spirit. Speaking at the civic meeting which followed the Kurbana, Bishop Macwan of Ahmedabad congratulated Snehadeepam on the 25 years of its service to the Church and society. "In South India, St. Thomas preached Christ mainly in Kerala, and St. John de Britto did the same in Tamil Nadu. They shed their blood for the faith," he said. Bishop Macwan recalled Jesus's words: "Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit," (John 12, 24). " "We are facing a systematic persecution in Kerala, Gujarat and other places in India. We will be able to face these challenges, like the persecution and the anti-conversion Bill in Gujarat, by remaining united in faith and making sacrifices and even dying for our faith. Wherever there is persecution, the Church will grow," said the prelate. President of Snehadeepam, Advocate P. T. Chacko gave a report of the various activities of the Trust in social, educational and religious fields. In his presidential address, Archbishop Thazhath appreciated Snehadeepam for promoting co-operation and unity of faith among Christians. "We are all one in Jesus Christ," he said.Snehadeepam honoured eight Jesuit jubilerians with a shawl and a gift pack each. The jubilerians are Fathers Alex Thannipara, Joseph Thomas, Joseph Mattam, Joseph Ovelil, Ishanand Vempeny, Jose Changanacherry, K.C. Thomas and Varghese Mannarkulam. The civic function included prize distribution for school children for their outstanding performances in studies and also for the competitions held on the occasion of Snehadeepam jubilee. Thazhath also released a souvenir.

Special status for Goa? Where is our Goa heading? To a life controlled by drugs, booze, sex, swords, daggers and cops? There is little doubt in the common man's mind that criminals are lurking at every street corner, at construction sites, bars, discotheques and even with politicians. Recently, the guardians of the law have themselves been found stealing from duty free shops at the airport. or taking contracts to eliminate people. Times have definitely changed but let us not blame Bush or the U.S. for the escalation in the incidents of crime and communal clashes in Goa. Successive governments in Goa since liberation have done nothing but divided Goans on basis of caste and religion. The various policies of the governments have imported trouble makers from other parts of the country into the State and done away with healthy social practices and relationships. The Communidades have ben robbed of their land and the laws have been repeatedly amended to accomodate crime and disease by calling it development. Even Housing Boards were set up to create housing for migrants and push out the goans. Scooundrels have not only been encouraged to buy land but also dig up the earth and export the minerals for huge profits. Every time goans rise to defend their rights they are condemned as anti-national, anti-development, pro-portuguese conspirators and now even branded as naxalites. Goa definitely needs a special law to guarantee permanent protection of its precious natural resources, fragile ecosytems and unique identity. -Soter D'Souza Socorro
Re: [Goanet] Anti-Goan Identity Movement
I can understand the dilemma that Arwin is going through. It stems from the simple fact that he cannot clearly define what he means by his unique Goan identity, and understand what good its preservation does him. Perhaps, he also feels a modicum of discomfort in the realization that he is as much an Indian as he is a Goan, that there are many Goans who have less things in common with him than with non-Goans - things that have to do with religion, language, music, food, tradition, habits, rituals, customs, etc. To defuse the fog he has created by fixating on preservation of his unique identity, he has to do nothing more than ask himself the following two questions: 1. Can he become a better Goan by separating himself from non-Goans? 2. Can Goa achieve greater prosperity by being insulated from the rest of India?
