In Goa? Must be some mistake:-)) Where is Fr. Ivo when you really need him?:-)) More importantly, why didn't Cecil Pinto, who keeps a sharp eye on the sex..., er, social situation in the Fatherland, tell us about this growing assault on Goan women, perhaps on men, too? NT NETWORK: There is a case wherein two women were married to a man and both marriages took place in the same taluka and in the same sub-registrar's office. After the case went on for some time the husband died but the case is still on to prove who is the actual wife. Mario still incredulous: I guess both marriages also took place at the exact same time with the man standing in the middle:-)) No wonder they can't tell which one was first. NT NETWORK: Ms Rao argues that there is no penalty that is normally enforced on such marriages so people can get away, and adds, also proof becomes a problem and ego comes in the way of acceptance. Mario observes: Proof is always a problem. Unless there is DNA evidence just because he was sleeping with someone, in a court of law could simply mean he was sleeping with someone:-)) What could be more innocent than that? My client has no idea how she got in his bed, your Honor; the empty feni bottle proves he was fast asleep. Besides, after emptying a feni bottle, what are the chances there is any further DNA evidence? I move to dismiss this scurrilous slander on my client.

The ruling appeared to back criticism from Christian leaders that the state government had failed to provide enough security for scared Christians still living in camps and forests. The top court also barred the state government, run by a coalition of a regional party with Hindu nationalists, from withdrawing troops from riot-infested zones without permission of the central government http://in.reuters.com/article/topNews/idINIndia-37293820090105?sp=true The Supreme Court on Monday said it would not allow persecution of minorities and asked the Orissa Governmenthttp://www.indianexpress.com/special/government,%20india/to resign if it was unable to protect Christians who were targeted in recent riots that followed the assassination of a VHP leader. We are secular country. We cannot allow persecution of minorities, a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/orissa-riots-sc-says-wont-allow-minority-persecution/406904/ While Maoists have claimed responsibility for the killings and the Christian organisations have denied any role in the crime, some Hindu organisations have held the minority community responsible for it. http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/politics/supreme-court-asks-government-to-ensure-orissa-christians-safety_100138591.html

Also the gaddos from near National Theatre are also being relocated to the New Panjim Market because the theatre which is CCP property is going to give way to a mall. Babush controls the Corpporation and so the mall will be his to control. Of course all this I got from a disgruntled Miramar stall owner in a period of five minutes casual conversation yesterday. Wonder what the truth actually is. A gaddo owner from near National said that they were plans to create a Food Court near the Children's Park and allocate him a stall there. He wanted to know how he is going to learn to make Bhel Puri now when he has been running a gaddo all his life. He would have to therefore sub-let to a non-Goan. Intersting rumours and opinions around Panjim these days. Cheers! Cecil = Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2009 00:31:05 -0800 (PST) From: Rajan P. News is that a mall is being planned in Miramar - gadde owned by Goans have been forcibly cleared by a politician-thug (who has become the patron of throngs of ghatis). That is not all - a flyover or something to that effect is being planned to link Miramar directly to a five-star hotel in Miramar. All this in partnership with a well-known Goan magnate, it is alleged. Elsewhere - a marina on San Jacinto mooted by 4 politicians lead by Yuvraj, seconded by the champion of Gaudo community. The web extends far beyond. Many current and ex-politicos, activists, wannebe activists, have-beens, never-will-be's etc are in on the take, with wads of cash distributed like prasad to keep the potential troublemakers in good cheer. r

There is a lot of callousness involved on he part of officials when a person can effect bigamous liaisons at the same sub-registrar's office. Of course, this phenomenon is by no means confined to Goa alone. It is obvious that there is no checking done of individuals who apply to the Registrar of marriages when they want to get united in holy matrimony! Rina Mukherji Kolkata

But then, if Mr. Alemao is really serious about protecting Goa's Identity, then I request him to fight against other critical issues, which are seriously destroying Goa's Identity. For instance, Large Scale land sales to non-goans mega-projects favouring outsider, not only brings in un-necessary migrant work force but also brings in majority non-goan settlers. Surely if the latter is not stopped or restricted, we Goans will soon be a minority in Goa; I hope we all appreciate that Romi Konkani will not be relevant, if Goa ends up with a Non-Goan majority!! I humbly request Marshall to kindly not resort to name-calling. I think Marshall does not understand why journalists have an ethical obligation to make sure that they have two independent sources before they report something as fact. It is to protect people's rights, including a victim's right to privacy. It is also to guard against the spread of rumors and false allegations, and to prevent incitement of communal/sectarian feelings and violent action. The sarcasm in the above post from Marshall misleads people as to what they should do in the event that they become victims of a crime. I think it is best for any person who is attacked by a Hindu, Christian, Muslim or any other kind of criminal to take the following steps: 1. Call for help, and seek medical help. 2. Call the police, and lodge a detailed criminal complaint. 3. Cooperative fully with criminal investigators and any independent judicial inquiry. 4. Her husband was a true Indian hero who paid with his life while his country and leaders and superiors let him down. I wish someone would tell the Pakistanis about her genuine nobility in the face of a devastating personal loss. Regarding Kasab, now that he has been exposed to sane people, hopefully including some Indian Muslims, a pawn like Kasab may change the vile and hateful anti-India ideology that every Pakistani seems steeped in while growing up, as part of their basic education. However, what about the 4,000 plus Indians that have been killed by Pakistani jihadis since 2004, and the many more that will be killed in the future if surviving Indians keep forgiving their killers instead of working to stop them? Pakistan is a failed state that has tolerated terrorists, used terrorism against India in Kashmir, and continues to menace its neighbors on both sides. Far too many Indians and Afghans have died as a result.

Of course, there have been worse subject lines on Goanet in recent years. I AM RETAINING A SMALL SECTION OF GODFREY'S POST TO AVOID THE NEED FOR REPEATING THE FACTS, DEBATABLE THOUGH THEY MAY BE. It is the 22nd anniversary of the passage of the Official Language Act, 1987 on 04 February, 2009. Three days later, the pro-Devanagri only ABKP will have its session at Kundapur in Karnataka state ...a state that has rejected the alleged supremacy of Devanangri script and adopted the Kannada script for teaching Konkani in schools. Devanagri is an option for teaching Konkani, but it is not exercised even in one school in Karnataka to date. The Goa Assembly session begins one day after the OLA, 1987 anniversary. The former MGP minister-turned-Congress CM who saw the OLA Bill through is now the Speaker, the Independent MLA of Margao who guided the KPA in that era is the Chairman of the Congress Think Tank, the KPA President is the IPP of the Goa Konkani Akademi and all three swear by the OLA, 1987. The lone Goa Congress MLA of that era is now a retired hurt former CM and some other leaders of the KPA are now gearing up for another movement The Goa Konkani Akademi has been reconstituted on New Year's Day 2009. No one has seen tomorrow, but one is hopeful of a new dawn. Status quo of the last term ... molestation of the OLA, 1987, but no consumation seems to be on offer in the various cultural bodies, from Kala Academy [Art Culture Dept] to Goa Konkani Akademi [Official Language Dept] with crumbs being thrown but not even on par with those given to the Marathi Akademi. these issues have been debated on the HCN programme CROSSFIRE aired yesterday and tonight [05 Jan. 2009]. There are requests to put out the video on Youtube. That will depend on the HCN policy on the matter. A pedestrian walk-over has been proposed to be built somewhere near the Sharada Mandir School, to make it easier for the school children to cross-over. By inference, the school therefore may not be shifted. There is also a proposal to create a Food Court near the Children's Park area and along the River Mandovi promenade. While a few city gaddas may be allotted space here, most of the others will be rehabilitated in the new Market complex. The National theatre lease has expired and the CCP is likely to take possession of the premises in the near future. Nothing has been planned there as yet. It is pertinent to point out that all this cannot happen without the tacit support of the city MLA. We need to wait and watch what his reaction to this is going to be. Cheers Sandeep -- Cecil Pinto wrote on Goanet: Sharda Mandir school is being shifted to Taleigao A 5 star hotel will come up at where the school now is at Miramar A pedestrian walkover is plannned in the area Also the gaddos from near National Theatre are also being relocated tothe New Panjim Market because the theatre which is CCP property isgoing to give way to a mall A gaddo owner from near National said that they were plans to create aFood Court near the Children's Park and allocate him a stall there

Many current and ex-politicos, activists, wannebe activists, have-beens, never-will-be's etc are in on the take, with wads of cash distributed like prasad to keep the potential troublemakers in good cheer. r

The memory of the hero is reduced to a recall of just fifteen minutes, following a violent attack by the killers of his girlfriend. To avenge the past as well as remember his present-day plan, the protagonist uses memory pegs in terms of Diaries, Polaroid photo-images, permanent tattoos on his torso, scribbled notes and memory alerts on his mobile. While the film takes creative liberty to tell its tale of fiction, it has a lesson for us… Consider our own predicament. There are times when we are seized with a passion and a mission to respond to a challenging situation. It could be a brazen terrorist strike… or a shameful act of corruption… or the murder of humanity in a communal riot… or an exploit of exploitation… or a criminal lapse in governance! But, as time passes our noble intentions begin to detach from our consciousness… we suffer from memory loss of our own cause… Righteous intentions need to be guarded against loss of focus… Like the protagonist in the film, we need to use memory pegs… We need to maintain dairies that account for what we are thinking, what we are doing and what we are going through… We must document our dreams and plans through notes, sketches, photographs, blogs, etc… We must surround ourselves with knowledge resources like books, quotations, vision and mission statements, and the like. Amnesia patients may have no choice but to prop up their memory with methods and mechanisms… But for the rest of us, “remembering” is about making a choice… We can choose to remember what we believe in or we can choose to forget to walk our own talk…It is all about putting in the crucial extra effort to fasten our thoughts, plans and actions with the glue of a convergent memory… To BE BETTER at remembering what we tend to forget… Peg in extra effort today, lest the future be one of regret! - Pravin K. They are fully cognisant and do not need us to advise them that they are at risk of losing their privacy in the process. That is a price they are willing to pay to get justice in India. That is also a price that they are also willing to pay knowing that inevitably politicians will want to take advantage of their situation. Mostly, there is no such thing as independent judicial inquiry in India. See the inquiry that has absolved Narendra Modi of the Gujarat carnage. If there is such an animal (and there sometimes is) then the report just gathers dust. Perhaps your advice is better suited to Texas. Even then, I am doubtful, things in the redneck state being what they are. Roland. On Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 1:06 PM, Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com wrote: 1. Apparently after a few days of this arduous activity, he is now a Goa expert. To mark his newfound insight into the land, he had issued a professorial proclamation: ...that Goa most definitely is not being overrun with big-time real estate development projects... Clearly I, and many others, who have been traveling the length and breadth of Goa, have been hallucinating. All those thousands of photos I shot and displayed, the mountain of papers I obtained through RTI - they must be wisps of our imagination somehow magically transformed into physical matter. What you have been seeing with your eyes, dear Goans - just don't believe it. Check your body temperature, it may be the flu. Mr Singh, on the other hand, with the benefit of his fawning Goan informants and superior intellect, has divined that all is fine and dandy in Goa. Rest easy, Goans. The foreign perfusser has spoken. r

Even then, I am doubtful, things in the redneck state being what they are. Roland, I invite you to visit and experience Texas for yourself. The people there are the friendliest residents of the approx 30 states I have visited. The friendliest are those from the group you use derogatory names to describe. Lastly, Goans fit in easily in Texas. The majority of the people have Goan sounding names and look like Goans too. Mervyn3.0 __ Yahoo! There are no prizes for being fast and wrong. Writing for a journalist is the skill of presenting information clearly, concisely and effectively. It is based on hard facts, so the reporter must know how and where to find reliable information. A critical challenge is how to reconcile conflicting accounts of the same event. Many journalistic organisations insist on the two source rule that means that every fact must be confirmed by two independent sources before it can be taken as reliable. 2. An article entitled Media and Conflict in the Philippines from the Committee of Concerned Journalists at - http://www.concernedjournalists.org/media-and-conflict-philippines Here is the pertinent quote under the subheading Dispassionate Reporting: Recognizing the fallibility, if not the occasional deceit of sources, individual reporters and various news organizations develop standards for testing the truthfulness of a story. Are two or more independent sources providing the same information? Did the journalist see and hear the evidence himself or herself or get it secondhand? What are the credibility, reputation and motivation of the source? Cheers, Santosh
