[Goanet] Stirring the communal cauldron --- Santosh's questions
Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 10:57:20 -0800 (PST) From: Samir Kelekar samir_kele...@yahoo.com You know that there was massive communal violence in Gujarat orchastrated by Modi and Modi is the CM of Gujarat today. So, what should the victims do? The victims havent got justice in India. What the victims, if they survived at all, should do is an open question. A few days back an engineer not willing to pay up was brutally murdered in UP by an MLA and his henchmen. The MLA was allegedly collecting money for Mayawati the UP CM's birthday bash. Mayawati is so big even Sonia won't touch her. So, what should the victim's relatives (the victim is dead) do ? Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 17:35:17 -0500 From: Tim de Mello timdemel...@hotmail.com The PBS/BBC Channel aired the first two episodes last night. Fantastic! Visit the very comprehensive website: http://www.pbs.org/thestoryofindia It is well worth a visit. ENJOY Be proud! Mario asks: Here we see two opposite ends of the Indian spectrum. On the one hand, according to Samir and Marshall before him, India is a functioning anarchy where might is right and no one's rights are safe - obviously nothing to be proud of after 61 years of independance, not to mention high-minded moralizing aimed at the rest of the world. Ironically, the colonial countries that exploited India for centuries are safe and functioning democracies by comparison. On the other hand, PBS/BBC portray India as a country that would make any Indian proud. I am looking forward to an essay by one of our Goanet philosophers to explain this dichotomy. Selma? Sandeep? What say you?

Re: [Goanet] Journalism and two independent sources for any factual information Was: Re: Stirring the communal cauldron
Frederick --- On Tue, 1/6/09, Frederick FN Noronha f...@goa-india.org wrote: Santosh's contention that he got this two independent sources logic from sources too many to remember in the American news media isn't very convincing to me. Frederick, It looks like you do not want to take me at my word, just like I don't want to take a Christian or a Hindu campaigner at his/her word when he/she provides toll numbers pertaining to Hindu-Christian riots. Are you suggesting that Dayal's facts are untrue, or attempting to discredit Dayal and use the quote to shift attention from the point that my article seeks to make? As a critical reader I don't know whether to believe those numbers or not in the absence of confirmation from a neutral source. However, I would love to know whether you would believe these numbers if they were produced by a Hindu campaigner. If so, can you please tell me the name of one such campaigner as an example? What I would like to know is I would be interested in knowing if you have any other set of figures for the fallout from the recent communal violence in Orissa, Karnataka and some other pockets. I am trying to find out what neutral sources have reported on this issue. I will let you know as soon as I have that information. From the African and Philippines sites you quote, I am still to understand where you got the idea that my writing is a transgression of an ethical obligation to make sure that they have two independent sources before they report something as fact. From the African source here is the relevant quote: Amid diversity, journalist organisations around the world have sought to codify professional ethics. Nearly every code of ethics agrees on at least three fundamental factors in the practice of journalism: impartiality, accuracy and fairness.. Accuracy: Every journalists code stresses the need for accuracy Many journalistic organisations insist on the two source rule that means that every fact must be confirmed by two independent sources before it can be taken as reliable. http://www.rap21.org/article18465.html From the Phillipines source here is the relevant quote: Recognizing the fallibility, if not the occasional deceit of sources, individual reporters and various news organizations develop standards for testing the truthfulness of a story. Are two or more independent sources providing the same information? http://www.concernedjournalists.org/media-and-conflict-philippines#reporting I would like to ask Santosh (a) whether he recognises a difference between news-reports, feature article (such as a cover story for a monthly magazine) or news features, and other genres of journalism and (b) whether he accepts that there can be some difference between a fact not otherwise attributed to a single speaker and a statement clearly attributed to an identified person? I believe that if you want a critical reader to trust some information reported in a news report, feature article, news feature or other genre of journalism, as factually accurate, it is your obligation to see to it that it is confirmed by at least two independent sources, preferably neutral ones. Cheers, Santosh
[Goanet] Unqualified apology...
This comes after an email from Cecil Pinto, and indeed, some thinking after reading Fred's first post. Also a phone call I got this morning saying I had been less than circumspect in my reference to Sandeep Heble being both a 'bigot' and having 'Jan Sanghi/RSS roots'. In fairness I have checked Sandeep's earlier posts and would like to offer him my unconditional apology. I would like him to consider that I may have been somewhat over inflamed by that reference to John, and in the process, before checking the context of the earlier postings, mistakenly assuming he came from the far right. The error has been corrected in my head. Hartman de Souza

--- On Wed, 1/7/09, Mario Goveia mgov...@sbcglobal.net wrote: I am looking forward to an essay by one of our Goanet philosophers to explain this dichotomy. Selma? Sandeep? What say you? --- Dear Mario, Owing to some other commitments at this time, I generally don't read Goanet these days until the end of the week when I put together the highlights. Now and then though I do open up a mail from some of the better writers on Goanet and opening up yours today I chanced upon this little reference to me. Whether it was tongue-in-cheek or not, I'm delighted to be in Sandeep's respectful company. Among Sandeep's many qualities which I admire is his habit of not bad-mouthing someone behind their backs on other forums. If he has something to say, I believe he does it to their face. Anyway, I digress singing Sandeep's praises and I forget what your initial call for comment was on. Ah yes, India. I believe when I first joined Goanet, we had a lovely discussion on that most maligned of economist Malthus. In my book, India exemplifies all the horrors wrought onto society because of uncontrolled population and it is bound to get worse. No amount of wealth creation will penetrate 1.2 billion people in our life-time at least. This country is going to chug-along in chaos and anarchy for the next 100 years. Perhaps it is an overly pessimistic view to take of India. Perhaps it's an excessively deary, bitter winter day in London. But because we are so tight on resources, compound that with corrupted distribution of resource and a lack of will-power to correct these glitches of corruption and pollution, I don't see it any other way. Having said that, I must say that India is home to some of the most benevolent and intelligent people in the world. When I am at its airports, in its parochial villages, its squalid metros, its bursting to the seams railway system and its rusted buses I can't help but be in awe of the generous soul of its people. People who have so little and yet manage to give so much to the world. People who come out of its chawls and go onto to become world renowned designers, writers, technicians, chartered accountants, doctors and engineers. The austerity of life in India would have broken the back of the most hardy Survivor contestant in America. And in this we have to take comfort. Best, Selma
Re: [Goanet] Woman.....Beach.......but a Goan woman on a Goan Beach???
Bosco, As an expat yourself based half-way around the world, are you suggesting that nobody could publish a photograph of you in a Toronto mall, for instance? Should ethnicity be determined before before publishing any photograph? That makes for a nightmare scenario for photo-editors, who could be facing a possible minefield. Miguel happened to come across a copy of the SpiceRoute journal in question, and passed it on to me. As far as I noticed, nowhere has SpiceRoute called the person a Goan woman. (Even if they had, for argument sake, what does it mean to be Goan? Someone who has spent three generations out of Goa is a Goan, based on the accidents of genetics, but not someone who has spent half-a-lifetime in Goa? I think we need to rethink concepts of identity in our fast globalising world, though it might personally be convenient for us to stick to past views.) The lamanis are a colourful people, and the hues of their bright dresses makes a contrast against the Goan sand. Being kind of one myself, I think I could imagine how a photographer's eye works -- specially photographers who are focussed more on beauty and aesthetics rather than being politically correct. When you say woman... beach... but a Goan woman on a Goan beach? your subject line is vague and perhaps a trifle misleading. Are you denying that Lamani women exist on Goan beaches, in their colourful, all-too-visible attire. Are you suggesting people who don't have a certain ethnicity cannot be depicted in photographs of Goa? (The latter is an argument that could be stretched to dangerous extends, specially because we have been repeatedly excluding The Other in Goa, even those whom we claim to be our own people... for generations, on grounds of class, caste, language, ethnicity, etc.) FN Disclaimer: I write a small column for the magazine in question, but this is not the reason for my above stand, which I probably would have taken regardless in an attempt to question Goan fundamentalisms of current times. 2009/1/7 Bosco D'Mello bos...@canada.com: SpiceJet was showcasing Goan Beaches in the December 2008 edition of their inflight magazine SpiceRoute. Re: [Goanet] Goanet] Stirring the communal cauldron
Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 07:15:37 +0530 From: Frederick \FN\ Noronha f...@goa-india.org John Dayal is not the only one to get thus targeted. Vijay Prashad, who has been in the forefront against communal intolerance, has another interestingly-distorted page on the Wikipedia. Mario responds: I have no idea whether John Dayal is a radical Christian or a fanatic. My guess is that he is a good man. However to suggest that he was unbiased as a journalist is laughable. His friend and colleague, Hartman de Souza, unintentionally perhaps, showed that he clearly had personal biases that must have skewed his news reports about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We also heard about his emotional involvement in warning Sikhs of danger, a commendable and humane action, but which had to have biased his news reports in that conflict as well. None of this makes John Dayal a bad person - only one whose reporting needs corroboration and context before taking it to the bank. Vijay Prashad, on the other hand, was in the forefront of the organized assault on the integrity of Sonal Shah, deliberately using unrelated evidence in order to smear and slander her. He is about as tolerant as Karl Marx, whose plausible-sounding but illogical philosophy has caused more misery and misallocation of resources around the world than any other human being. Unlike Dayal, Prashad benefits from the munificence and freedom of American academia, funded by the fruits of capitalism, while busily working to undermine the fundamental philosophies of freedom and capitalism that made America the altruistic society that it is today.
[Goanet] Stirring the communal cauldron
Let me first categorically assert that the intentions of my post were not in any way meant to discredit John Dayal or show him in poor light. If my earlier posts appeared in that way, I sincerely apologize for the same as I have realised that the wordings of the post were quite unfair to him. I would accept the words of Hartman and Frederick that John Dayal is a great humanitarian – something that I never disputed in my earlier posts in the first place. As a matter of fact, some of the most orthodox Missionaries who operate on Indian soils too are sincere humanitarians. Being involved with a few social groups and having done joint events with them, I can say with a large degree of conviction that they too are good human beings whose love and concern for fellow humans are qualities that are worthy of emulation. I however believe that the ideological positions John Dayal or radical evangelical groups hold are not in the interests of a modern progressive society that a liberal Indian would wish to see. Intolerance is a viscious cycle that results in violence that begets in further violence; and in communal clashes it is always the innocent citizens who suffer. There is therefore a need to weed out all forms of intolerance, orthodoxy and irrational behavior. This is the path that most modern progressive Western democracies followed when they adopted a model of secularism that was essentially anti-religion and if we want to prevent communal clashes from happening this is the path that India will need to emulate. Through further investigations, I have susbsequently learnt that John Dayal was a progressive liberal leader in the past. However, while he presently opposes the orthodoxy in Hinduism (which is a good thing) he somehow does not seem to do the same when it comes to opposing the fundamentalists operating in his religion. My objections to him are therefore limited to this and if my opinions about him are wrong, then the correct approach will be in presenting the facts in a sincere and articulate manner, without resorting to unfair name-calling. For the records, I have nothing to do with RSS or Jana Sangh or BJP or any other religious or political groups. Finally, thanks to Cecil, Anand, Santosh, Bosco, Frederick and a few others for their gracious support. Cheers Sandeep
Re: [Goanet] Stirring the communal cauldron
2009/1/7 Cecil Pinto cecilpi...@gmail.com: Your allegation that Heble has 'Jan Singhi/RSS roots' is most intriguing. If you have proof of this allegation please place it on the table. Else I think you owe us an explanation and Sandeep an apology. Is having Jan Sanghi/RSS roots a cardinal sin :-) Pun intended! I think not! Vidyadhar Gadgil has himself been in the RSS for a year or two, if I recall rightly what he mentioned. For a (usually) upper caste Maharashtrian boy (and now, in many more parts of India) being in the RSS is simply like membership of a boys club, the Boy Scouts of the post-Empire just after the sun set on it, Mocidade Portuguesa in Salazar's Goa, or the Young Pioneers of the former Eastern Bloc countries. Then, we have all kinds of influences in our own lives. I myself was a rather conservative Catholic in my younger, early teen days, looking on with suspicion on the gods and beliefs of others! (This is not to suggest one doesn't carry biases or bigotry now, in different forms.) But, at the end of the day, our actions and attitudes TODAY matter more than the connections of the past. Gadgil is as secular as they come (a bit too much, if you ask me!) despite or because of his background. I know of some strident campaigners for secularism, the kind who might even alienate ordinary religious folk, in places like Delhi, who had their initial lessons in the RSS. Membership of organisations is one thing; current attitudes and values is another. The two may not be directly related too. I know a lot of Congressmen who strike me as being pretty communal, casteist or sectarian at least. Ditto for politicians of other parties. Leftists who are unwilling to admit the politics of caste while talking exclusively about class. Feminists who might end up being chauvinists and inconsistent in a different sense. Secular campaigners who worship the gods of modernity, science, knowitallism or whatever,. At another level, one needs to remind oneself that the Jan Sangh (or the BJP in its post-Gandhian socialism avatar) is just another party for many Indians. Like how the Salcete (or other) Catholic would not believe there's anything particularly sectarian or communal in supporting the UGDP, Goa Congress or United Goans. It may be a tiny core that sets the agenda, and fuels communal attitudes of a party, but for most of the voters, a party is just that. A party, of the political kind. A choice to misrule and corruption. A vote for change, as Obama promises half-the-world away. Of course, this is all in the spirit of engendering debate. I know that Hartman's comments were made in the heat of the moment, and Hartman thanks for showing magnamity in taking back unfair words said in haste and hurry :-) It's right to recognise that we all can also be wrong. From: Pravin Sabnis pravinsab...@yahoo.com I can personally vouch that my friend, Sandeep Heble is a very sensitive and humane person in reality. His various postings on the Goanet reflect his concern over the communal slants given to various topics. His views can be challenged but to label him a bigot is unfair. We will not accept the persecution of minority. If the state government is unable to protect them, it should resign, declared the federal court. The court was responding to a petition for protection entered by Archbishop Raphael Cheenath of Bhubaneswar. The petition cited the lack of security especially in the Kandhamal district, where thousands of Christians have fled from their homes to escape roaming Hindu mobs. It is the duty of the state government to protect the minority community, the federal court stated. Addressing their criticism directly to government leaders, the judges said that officials in Orissa had offered protection to Christians only after 50,000 people of the minority community fled to the jungles. The orchestrated violence against Christians in Kandhamal was let lose by Hindu groups following the murder of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati-- the foremost figure among the Hindu nationalist groups in Orissa-- who was shot dead on August 23. Although Maoist rebels claimed responsibility for the murder, Hindu groups said the murder of the Hindu leader was a Christian conspiracy. In the aftermath of the killing, Hindu mobs attacked Christians in dozens of locations over a period of several weeks, with local police doing little to curb the violence. More than 70 Christians were killed, and over 6,000 homes looted or destroyed along with 200 churches. Roughly half of the 100,000 Christians in the Kandhamal district were driven from their homes. [Goanet] Canadiana
For some time now I have been thinking of writing of Canadian life from a Goan perspective in a city that is home to one of the largest Goan diasporas in the world. Why do I think I can do this? Perhaps it is that the human interest of every situation always claims my attention before the political and economic factors do. Perhaps it is that from the day I set foot on Canadian soil I have made a living - all in sales and in that capacity have met some 7000 odd people (at least 2 new persons a day X 220 working days X 17 years) from every walk of life who have mostly enriched my existence but sometimes disgusted it. Perhaps you may find it interesting reading. If you don't, just delete my posts. There will be no scientifically tested facts in my narratives. No two witnesses to what I say. Few figures but many facets of what I have seen, experienced and read about. There are many Canadian Goan readers of Goanet and they are welcome to contradict or question what I say. They are free to express their own opinions and I shall be happy for it. I will merely write my own. A happy new year and God's blessing to all. Roland Francis Toronto +1 (416) 453.3371

[Goanet] A mine balance - by Wendell Rodricks
A MINE BALANCE By Wendell Rodricks Ever since the protest of the arrogant and intrusive treatment of the villagers protesting at Colamb village over the mining issue, there has been, on another level a rather unjust emotion from activists and reporters keen to sound the death knell for all miners. This attitude is disrespectful for a Goan industry that has for many decades now become a part of the Goan economic system. As I said in a recent interview not all police, politicians, miners and industrialists are bad. It's a few greedy, illegal, arrogant lot that is giving everyone a bad name. I have always looked practically at mining in Goa. Sure there is degradation of the land. But there has also been a large revenue that has benefited many. So there must be a balance in our approach to mining in Goa. Villagers and farmers deserve our collective sympathy because their lives and livelihoods are at stake. So support them we must. On the other hand, there are many mining companies who are responsible. We cannot forget that some mining pioneers have given back a lot to society in many ways. From schools and colleges, research and medicine, arts and culture, these Goan industrialists have given Goa a level of philanthropy that is commendable. Their children in turn have continued the good work of their founding fathers. And to their credit, this new generation has also ventured into other areas of revenue for Goa. It is now unjust to conduct a witch-hunt on an industry like mining. It should be controlled and over a period of time phased out. But this cannot happen overnight or in the next few years. What can happen overnight though is justice for peaceful farmers and villagers who are being victimized by a few uncaring miners, a biased police (that even goes to a level of arrogance to threaten peaceful protesters with exile from their ancestral villages), a corrupt South Goa politician who has a stake in this Colamb mine and a Chief Minister who needs to personally witness the injustice of villages and people in these far flung areas. It is all very easy to sit in our cosy homes with seaviews and hillscapes. But please go to these areas and see the rape of the land. In the early years, mine licenses were few and controlled. Now it is an Apocalypse of gigantic proportions. Even the miners would never build their homes on the ridge of their own mines. If they did live there instead of their plush homes, they would realize their contribution to the destruction of a green Goa. Three groups of people can make a change: The police and politicians should be fair to Goa and Goans. They need to decide if Goa's hinterland should be kept green for hinterland tourism and future generations of our Goan children or destroyed forever. The miners need to have a symposium to discuss the present and future situation of the mining industry. They need to condemn and marginalize the illegal miners who are giving all miners a bad name. Lastly, activist and the Goan public should open a dialogue with the above mentioned groups and help heal a scarred land. The negotiating table is the best option. As we look at a New Year with optimism, it is my prayer and hope that all Goans meet at a middle ground and gift Goa a better future this festive season. For Colamb villagers, our prayers for peace, wisdom and justice to the common man. A balanced Christmas and New Year 2009 to one and all. [Goanet] Editorial in today's Gomantak Times - by Derek Almeida
Goliath versus David Among the many stories in the Bible is one of David versus Goliath in which David a puny youth slays the Philistine giant with a sling stone. David goes on to become King of Israel. In far away Colamb, a similar battle is underway. A wiry Green is making life difficult for a giant mining company. Enter a new vice president of communications and the battle is taken to a new level – the legal level. The end is awaited. Will David (the green activist) succeed in slaying Goliath (Sociedade de Fomento Industrial Private Ltd)? To think that the blogspot run by Seby Rodrigues has caused a loss of Rs 500 crore to Fomentos, which has a mining lease in Colamb village is hilarious. However, the fact that the company has gone to lengths to file a defamation suit against Seby for reports published on his blog is proof that this Siolim-based green is a thorn in the flesh of the mining company. The petition filed by the company lists blog entries which are defamatory to it. We do not intend to discuss whether these entries are indeed defamatory or not. A court of law is the right platform to test this charge, and if found guilty, Seby will have to face the penalty decided by the court. There aren't any other issues involved because the blog is not anonymous. In that respect Seby plays with a straight bat. The nature of the battle that is presently underway depends on where you are standing. If placed on legal footing, the mining company appears to be in the right as it has all the permissions to go ahead with mining in Colamb. If you stand shoulder to shoulder with the villagers of Colamb and green activists then the company comes out as the 'bad guy' ripping up their lives and damaging precious forestland and fields. If you love green Goa and have no stake in the mining industry you will stand with the Greens. On the other hand if you have a truck or two, a tyre repair shop or a metal fabrication unit, you will sympathise with the miner. Taking sides is a hazardous job in this situation because the positions taken by the dramatis personae are extreme. There is no middle path here. The Rs 500 crore defamation suit alters the equation a bit. While we agree that every aggrieved party has a right to approach the courts for redressal, in the case of Seby Rodrigues we question why the case was filed in Kolkata and not Goa? Both Seby and Fomento are based in Goa, the mine in question is in Goa, why go to a far off place like Kolkata? One does not have to be Arun Shourie to conclude that the purpose is to transport Seby to a place where he has virtually no support and no access to friendly lawyers and to make it financially difficult for him to run the case. Hence the court case has two objectives –- defamation and harassment. This approach was adopted to silence Rajan Narayan when he was editor of 'O Herald' and leaders of the anti-Meta Strips agitation. It might be important to recall that an earlier attempt to neutralize Seby by labeling him as a Naxalite failed when the proof failed to match up to the charge. Then, Seby emerged victorious and the sobriquet 'Naxalite Seby' was stuck on him by those who wished to easily identify him in a state which probably has a thousand Sebys. Nobody is questioning the technicality of whether the case can be filed in Kokatta or not. But, if justice is the issue then the case should be transferred to Goa where it can be heard. In other words, the Vice-President (Communications) who has filed the case, should also play with a straight bat. -- 7th January 2009 - Gomantak Times =
[Goanet] Mining needs to be phased out - Interview with Wendell
MINING NEEDS TO BE PHASED OUT: In a tête-à-tête with Onilda Fernandes, Wendell Rodricks voices his protest against mining companies, which are ravaging the distant village of Colamb in search of wealth, and tells her that he has not crossed swords with all mine owners. You publicly announced that henceforth you would neither entertain nor hang out with politicians or corporate honchos whose mining firms were wrecking the environment. Could you elaborate? I spoke with reference to the Colamb illage and the marauding mining companies. Already one spring of water has been destroyed there, something which was created by God. Water is needed to cultivate fields, as a village survives on farming 365 days a year. Apart from this, sometime back, an 85 year old woman was sent to jail for protesting against the mining activity. Thanks to the huge generators in the fields and mining trucks on the roads, villagers are now deprived of their sleep as well. And through it all, the government is protecting the perpetrators of this crime. Would it be fair to put an end to all mining activity? After all, many depend on it for their livelihood. It would be unfair to abruptly stop all mining activity. Mining has been a means of livelihood to industrialists as well as the common man for a long time now. However, it has now become a problem to our locals. I don't think anybody has the right to give our Goans sleepless nights or employ outsiders who speak a foreign mother tongue that our locals find difficult to converse with. I have no personal axe to grind with the Chief Minister or Auduth Timblo. But they cannot continue persecuting people to gain personal wealth. Mining has to gradually phase out. It may take 5 or 10 years but it cannot be allowed to destroy the existing eco system. Will a boycott of the authorities help? I do not know. It may sound aggressive, but I would like to use peaceful means to protect Goans. I implore people who have money or the ear of the government, to do pujas and pray to goddesses like Saraswati so that wisdom is bestowed on miners and they stop ruining people's lives. While praying to lord Ganesh to remove all obstacles, these people should realize that they themselves are the obstacles. Its time industrialists like Fomento and Timblo take a stand andthink about people's welfare. What about the ancillaries that depend on this sector, like truck owners, garages, small restaurants etc? What will happen to them if mining is stopped? All are in debt, so that question doesn't even arise. Besides, they can always move onto other means of sustenance. We too should look at other areas of revenue. At present, our focus should be on the booming sector, that is, the tourism industry. What are we going to show our tourists, the ugly mines or a pristine Goa? You have announced a personal boycott of politicians, but these politicians are also representatives of the people, so, wouldn't it be easier to work with them? I don't protest against all politicians. There are good as well as bad politicians. Mathany Saldanha is a very good politician. Some industrialists too are conscientious. I am against anybody who is against the people of Goa. It breaks my heart that people are forced to approach me, just because I am a famous person. They should be able to go to the government or the police. Unfortunately here, politicians control the police. Police too take the side of the rich. Would this move of yours affect your business connections? How can it? Politicians are not my clients. Neither do I depend on them nor do they lean on me. According to me they lead a very boring, corrupt existence. I, on the other hand lead a glamorous life with film stars and models. I will continue to stand up for what I believe. What about the Salgaonkar owned Goa Marriott Resort, where you haveyour designer store? They (Salgaonkars) have no connection with Colamb at the moment. But if it comes down to moving my shop, that is really not a difficult option for me. Will you turn your back on the government completely? I have always been available to the state when it required my help, whether it was calling a dignitary for IFFI or designing police uniforms. In this particular case, I have gone peacefully and spoken to the DGP and chief secretary but to no avail. I don't see why people do pujas for their family's benefit when they are destroying the lives of so many others families. -- The interview above appeared in Gomantak Times on 22nd December 2009 =

As a matter of fact, some of the most Just to point out: I didn't say John Dayal is a great humanitarian. I did say there are clear attempts to discredit him online, apparently because of his campaigns to raise issues about religious intolerance and communalism in India. Whether or not I agree with John Dayal's priorities and approaches, this is despicable. (Similar is the case with others who campaign on these concerns, such as Vijay Prashad, who are victims of calaumny spread by Web 2.0 initiatives that were set up to empower the average citizen!) While my colleague Hartman criticised Sandeep Heble, used some strong word, and was gracious enough to have apologised for it, in fact, I believe that in recent times, Sandeep's posts have brought in a voice of reason to Goa-related debates in cyberspace. On the other hand, I am concerned by the approaches of some other middle-of-the-roaders who seem more ready to buy into communal propaganda, to pick up from and point to dubious websites and use these as evidence, and to duck major issues while getting every caught up with details. I expect more from individuals like Dr Santosh Helecar, whose recent priorities seem to have included jumping to the rescue of the VHPA Inc-linked Sonal Shah, to seek to discredit John Dayal and Vijay Prashad, to question activists and campaigners, to proffer lengthy arguments that deny the possibility of a polarisation along communal lines specially in Goa, et al... [Goanet] Stirring the communal cauldron
Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 07:34:29 +0530 From: Sandeep Heble sandeephe...@gmail.com It is an irony of our Nation that while the propagation of orthodox Hindutva is considered as bad and evil (and rightly so) the propagation of an orthodox intolerant brand of Christianity is considered an acceptable proposition. Mario observes: Sandeep, Once again we see some chaff among the wheat. Where the heck did you get the idea that the propagation of an intolerant brand of Christianity is an acceptable proposition? You just made that up. As the only source of reason, truth and peace on Goanet, I must advise you that starting an essay with such contrived codswallop as your opening premise shown above, dilutes the rest of your thoughts, and should be avoided in the interests of credibility. In case you are tempted to defend the indefensible, you will have to overcome the intellectual obstacle of my repeated characterizations of extremist Christians as fascists, just as Hindutvadis are fascists, not to mention Islamic terrorists. You would do a lot better if you started with a specific and accurate premise as the foundation for whatever else you may want to say. I would be hard pressed to characterize anything I have seen on Goanet as anything more than biased and passionate advocacy of a poster's point of view rather than anything inherently evil or deliberately destructive.

[Goanet] Credibility of facts reported by religious campaigners/spokespersons

I illustrate below how in the past the National Commission of Minorities has disputed the facts reported by the religious campaigner that Frederick used as the only source in one of his recent articles. THE ALLEGATION OF COMMUNAL VIOLENCE by Frederick's source The aicc and AICU sent a team of academicians and human rights activists including John Dayal, and Jesuit Fathers Jacob and Sebastian to Mathura to assess the situation in western UP. The aicc/AICU statement reminded authorities that though each incident of violence had its own genesis, they were knit in a pattern because of the campaign of hate and openly declared mission of the Sangh Parivar that they will oppose missionary activity in the country using force if required. In the latest incident in Haryana 3 nuns of the FMM order going to the midnight Easter mass at the Rewari Catholic Church were stalked and attacked by unknown men on a scooter on Saturday/Sunday midnight. Excerpt from a statement issued by Joseph D'Souza, Chairman, All India Christian Council and John Dayal, National Secretary for Public Affairs, All India Christian Council on April 25, 2000 For the full statement please see this link: http://indianchristians.in/news/content/view/1369/42/ REFUTATION OF THE ALLEGATION by The National Commission of Minorities The Deputy commissioner of Rewari accompanied by Fr. Philip and two nuns Sr. Ludmila D'souza and Sister Gertrude Ashram, Rewari visited the commission on 27th April, 2000 on the request of the commission to brief on the incident which took place on 22nd April, 2000 where in two out of the three nuns were injured. Sister Ludmila who was unhurt gave out the details of the accident. The Deputy commissioner was of the view that this is a case of an accident and there were no communal overtones. This was fully corroborated by Fr. Philip Parmar and the two nuns who went to the extent of stating that the motive behind the publicity with regard to the above accident is not understood as the atmosphere in Rewari has all along been very peaceful. They also mentioned that some western forces were trying to give a political colour to the incident and create a wedge among the Hindus and Christians residing in the town. We are therefore of the view that this is a case of simple accident and that no communal meaning be attributed to it. Excerpt from a report prepared by the National Commission of Minorities team consisting of Justice Mohammed Shamim, Chairman, Mr. Tarlochan Singh, Vice-Chairman, and two members, Mr. John Joseph and Lt. Gen. A. M. Sethna (Retd) sometime after April 27, 2000 For the full report please contact The National Commission of Minorities at http://ncm.nic.in/ Cheers, Santosh

Mario responds: Sandeep, Buried deep within your philosophical ruminations I often find some gratuitous chaff among the wheat that are whimsically created out of whole cloth. Your sentiments may not rise to the level of religious antipathy, but they come awfully close. I pointed out one instance recently where you turned an anti-religious insult completely on its head, using your personal presumptions to try and explain what another poster had not said. Another example is shown above. Secularism is the notion that religion should be excluded from official governmental decision-making and institutions. This is a good thing. Nowhere in true secularism is there any hint of an essential anti-religious sentiment. In fact, true secularism allows unfettered religious practice but keeps it out of the public domain. For example, in a modern cradle of implacable secularism, religion makes only one direct and obvious appearance in the original US Constitution that seems to point to a desire for some degree of religious freedom. That appearance is in Article 6, at the end of the third clause: No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. The First Amendment to the US Constitution refers to religion thus: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;... That's it. Short aand sweet but saying it all. Thus a) a person's religion is not permitted as a qualification for any public office, and b) the US legislature can pass no law establishing any particular religion, or prohibiting the free excercise of a citizen's choice of a religion, or, by extension, atheism. I wouldn't consider any of this anti-religion, just the opposite; it prohibits government from interfering in a citizen's religious choice or practice.

B. Ramalinga Raju, the founder and chairman of Satyam, which means truth in Sanskrit, said in a letter to the board that he had wildly inflated the company’s profitability for several years. This resulted in 50.4 billion rupees ($1 billion) worth of fictitious” cash on the company’s balance sheet at the end of September. It was like riding a tiger, not knowing when to get off without being eaten, Mr Raju said, describing how the fraud, which he claimed had begun as an effort to smooth over a minor accounting discrepancy, had attained unmanageable proportions as the size of the company operations grew. My original post lacked the right keywords that bring out his usual dour responses. Keywords like Saddam, Bush, Iraq, Islamophobia, Gaza, Jews, bail-out, bankruptcy, etc.. But Frederick here has thrown a few questions at me and answered them himself. Nevertheless, I shall extrapolate on the purpose of my message. As an expat yourself based half-way around the world, are you suggesting that nobody could publish a photograph of you in a Toronto mall, for instance? RESPONSE: First, good luck finding me in a Toronto mall and secondly, I hope you protest if somebody publishes my photo and describes me as a descendent of North American First Nations people. My post merely questioned whether this was a Goan Woman and whether this was a Goan Beach? Why? Keep reading. This is what transpired minutes before I sent my earlier message to Goanet. Goanetter Oscar Lobo during the course of his travels in India last month encountered the Dec 2008 edition of SpiecRoute Mag and wrote the editor of the magazine (and copied me besides several other Goans) about the distortion between the ethnicity of the woman in photo and the caption of the article beach goa. The editor responded thus: *** begin snippet On Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 9:23 PM, Vanessa Mulquiney wrote: Dear Mr Lobo, Thank you for your email dated 6 Jan 2009. We appreciate your feedback and glad to hear that you enjoy travelling SpiceJet. In reference to the December issue of spiceroute, the professional photo library image portrayed on the front cover is that of a Goan hill tribe woman and not a Rajasthani woman as claimed. While we are aware that the image is not as common as beach goers wearing a sarong or bathing suit or the traditional Goan sari, for example, but it is incorrect to say that this image is not an uncommon sight in Goa. The spiceroute team is a mix of both western and Indian staff - including a Goan woman - who work to ensure that the magazine celebrates the wonderful diversity of India, is factually correct and culturally sensitive. *** end snippet *** I responded to the editor immediately thus: *** begin snippet *** On Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:30 PM, Bosco wrote: Dear Vanessa, I agree with your assertion that the image in question is not an uncommon sight in Goa. However please note it does not make it an image of a Goan woman. Since you state this is an image of a Goan hill tribe woman, perhaps you or your staff that includes a 'Goan woman' would care to name the tribe. Even though I am a Goan, it is possible I do not know everything about my heritage and its diversity. On the flipside is it possible for Ink-Publishing to acknowledge that the woman in question is a gross misrepresentation of an ethnic Goan woman; ethnic as in a Goan woman not wearing a sarong or bathing suit or the traditional Goan sari. I acknowledge the image is of a woman probably on a Goan beach and nothing more. A 30-second google revealed the following: http://www.maharashtratourism.net/images/tribes.jpg http://www.maharashtratourism.net/tribes.html And there are thousands of similar photographs I reckon you understand what is being parlayed here. Wish you, Ink Publishing and SpiceJet the best in 2009!! *** end snippet *** I notice subsequent to my message to the editor several other Goans wrote the editor of SpiceRoute Mag and I'm certain Frederick has received copies of the same. If anybody agrees with the editor's assertion above perhaps you can name the tribe like I have requested. Or perhaps you know the 'Goan woman' on the SpiceRoute Mag staff?? Or perhaps this is a 'hill tribe' that has recently re-settled in Goa and has been christened 'Goan' by some of our powerful and mighty. The photo in question is most likely a $49 stock photo from Getty Images that was improperly captioned by the original photographer. - Bosco PS. [Goanet] THE RISE OF ASIA
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * ANKA SERVICES For all your Goa-based media needs - Newspapers and Electronic Media Newspaper Adverts, Press Releases, Press Conferences www.ankaservices.com kam...@ankaservices.com THE RISE OF ASIA by Eduardo Faleiro The first Summit Conference of the Group of 20 was held last November in Washington D.C. The G-20 brings together twenty of the most important industrialized and emerging market countries across the world. They represent around 90 per cent of the global gross domestic product, 80 per cent of the world trade as well as two thirds of the world population. Its economic weight and broad membership makes the G-20 the single most important forum to address global economic and financial issues. The Conference dealt with the present global recession and called for a comprehensive reform of the international financial institutions so that they can more adequately reflect changing realities in the world economy and be more responsive to future challenges. The Conference underscored the effective shift of economic power to the Asia Pacific region and felt the need to involve China and India, the two rising economic giants, in the solution of the present crisis. The rise of Asia began with the extraordinary economic progress of Japan in the 1950s and 60s; it was followed by the remarkable advance of the Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore) and other countries of South East Asia; and now the impressive growth of India and China. By the middle of this century, China is expected to be the largest economy in the world and India the third largest. By that time, Asia might hold seven of the ten largest national economies. Yet, whilst Asia witnesses rapid economic growth there are vast numbers of people in this continent who face grave problems of illiteracy, disease and poverty. What is required is greater attention to inclusive development that benefits significantly most people and not just a fringe. Market forces need to be regulated to this effect. Often, the present economic policies accentuate economic disparities, widen the gap between the rich and the poor and lead to radicalization and political instability. The discontent of the vast masses has already resulted in the collapse of several Governments across the continent. Good governance calls for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in the year 2000. The eight goals are eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality and empowerment of women, reduction of child mortality, improvement in maternal health, eradication of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other major diseases, environmental sustainability and global partnership for development. Whilst some Asian countries have achieved and indeed surpassed these goals there are several others who will not be able to attain them by 2015 as scheduled, unless there is strong political will and the Governments concerned earmark sufficient funds for the purpose. The economic and social welfare of a country is advanced considerably if it interacts as part of a regional block rather than individually. An integrated regional economy accelerates economic growth of the member countries through the advantage of geographical proximity and economies of scale. The European Union is a model in this regard. It shows that even countries that have been at war for a thousand years can co-operate and work together for common benefit. ASEAN is another good example of regional co-operation. India contributes to Asian co-operation and solidarity. The Look East policy is intended to strengthen our relations with East and South East Asia and is a priority of our foreign policy. Relations between India and Japan have undergone a qualitative and significant improvement in recent years. The two Prime Ministers have been meeting regularly every year since 2005. A Global and Strategic Partnership between the two countries was established in December 2006. India and China have also realized that they can benefit from mutual co-operation and are attempting to do so. South Asia is an area of regional co-operation in which I took particular interest whilst in the Government of India and as a Member of Parliament. The South Asia Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) brings together India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and now also Afghanistan. There has been some progress in economic co-operation in the region and this should lead to improved

However the GTA as it is known, extends over a wide swathe of residential neighborhoods that would take you 2 hours driving time at 120 kmph on the connecting Highway 401 from west to east, end to end. The main body of Goans live in Scarborough, Mississauga and Markham, which is north of Toronto, although in the last few years they have inhabited the newer neighborhoods of Pickering and Ajax. Downtown Toronto has it's share of Goan yuppies (with no children) and retirees who have splurged on luxury lakeside condos from the generous proceeds of downsizing from large homes that eventually became empty nests with all their children gone. The population of the GTA is about 4 million souls of which Goans must be about 70 to 80 thousand. The Goan numbers are estimates. Goan immigration to Toronto, indeed Canada, came from the following waves: 1. Bombay Goans who came in the 50s and 60s with Indian passports and were admitted into Canada without any visas due to Commonwealth status. They just bought an air ticket and immigrated. 2. Karachi Goans also in the same period who were getting disillusioned with the Islamic State and were suffering religious persecution. 3. East Africa Goans from the 70s. The first major number was in 1972 due to Idi Amin's Uganda Asian expulsion. 4. Arabian Gulf Goans from the late 80s. The first Gulf wave was from Bahrain. 5. Bombay Goans from the 90s The Gulf and Bombay Goans continue to come in significant numbers. As a population, Goans are well-settled and could be considered affluent relative to other communities. Although mainly from the middle, non-professional class (unlike the USA), they worked diligently and hard, bought homes and accumulated assets. The Goans from East Africa are the most well-off as they joined the Federal and Provincial Govt in large numbers (shades of East Africa) and eventually the Govt turned out to be the best employer. Good salaries and especially fat retirement pensions. A husband and wife couple who reached the 80 factor (50 years old + 30 years service) get a monthly pension of about $8,000 per month in total. This is a significant amount, considering that the mortgage has been paid off, the children studies completed and no major expenses to take care of. The Bombay Goans have been the biggest achievers. They did not hesitate to re-qualify, a distinct mentality difference from the Gulf Goans whose main mantra seemed to be I am too old to study, the brain cells have rusted. The BGs also did not hesitate to take low paying jobs and rose quickly through the ranks. A main Canadian feature which takes much getting used to is start low and rise fast. Another is very few non-Canadian qualifications are given any importance and the third is the insistence on Canadian experience. The new immigrant gets stumped with this. How can I get Canadian experience if you don't give me the first job they ask. In the first year or two, the new Goan immigrant gets really disheartened. He has left his comfort zone, his life-long friends, his titled position and is forced to draw down on his savings which can disappear at an alarming rate. This is the Canadian test of fire. Most survive. Only to be faced with the Canadian winter, which he discovers is about a little less than half the year. The weather is the subject of another chapter. -- Roland Francis Toronto +1 (416) 453.3371

You have a problem with John Dayal for riding into Israeli-Palestinian clashes with Palestinian fighters in a jeep rather than embedded with an Israeli tank? Have you considered that he wanted to report a perspective other than what Israel would manage for the reporters it took? Have you considered that while the world would see the Israeli side of the equation, John Dayal may have wanted to show the scene from the other side? Are you too too drunk with the power and propaganda that the US foists upon the rest of the world? Roland. Regards, Arwin Fredrick (Even if they had, for argument sake, what does it mean to be Goan? Someone who has spent three generations out of Goa is a Goan, based on the accidents of genetics, but not someone who has spent half-a-lifetime in Goa? I think we need to rethink concepts of identity in our fast globalising world, though it might personally be convenient for us to stick to past views.)
