Saligao Serenade goes live on the Internet

http://www.saligaoserenade.com

Saligao Serenade, a website-cum-blog celebrating the history,
traditions, culture, folklore and people of Saligao - a colourful
village in Goa, India - was formally launched in Mumbai in the last
week of December 2009.

The main author of the essays featured on Saligao Serenade is Fr
Nascimento Mascarenhas, the well-known Goan priest and historian from
the village, who has written much on the history of the Catholic
Church in Goa. The essays have been selected from the vast number of
postings by Fr. Nascimento on the Saligaonet mailing-list between 2001
and 2005, and some additional material that he has been working on
subsequently.

Selection and editing of the essays has been done by Val Souza, a
seasoned Indian Information Technology journalist based in Mumbai, but
with roots in Saligao. Also featured on the site are sketches by Mel
D'Souza, an artist and author originally from Saligao and currently in
Canada.

Saligao Serenade was formally launched on 27 December 2009 by Fr
Nascimento's brother Michael Mascarenhas and sister-in-law Lina, on
the occasion of the couple's Golden Jubilee Wedding Anniversary
celebrations in Mumbai.

The website is organised into various categories, covering History,
Culture, Customs Beliefs, People, Religion, Village Matters and
Nature. Saligao Serenade welcomes original article submissions on
subjects connected with the village, in addition to comments on the
existing posts. New essays will be added every week on the site, which
is managed and maintained by Val Souza.

Saligao Serenade is accessible at www.saligaoserenade.com.

Sports City: Neura Rejected and Dhargal accepted?

National Games to be held in Goa in 2011
It’s as mega- project costing about 600 crores.
Rs. 500 crore already sanctioned to Goa by the Centre.

What’s sports city?
It’s a Sports City and Games Village with major stadia
to host athletics, football, hockey, a cycling
a shooting range, tennis courts, two to three indoor stadia
for volleyball, basketball, handball, fencing, table tennis,
shopping malls, a five-star hotel to accommodate the delegates
and officials, a bus stand with a vast parking area etc etc
for about 12,000 players and 2000 officials and delegates etc

Sports city is now officially out of Neura ref. CM and SM
Why Neura rejected the sporty city?
As per the news items and the local MLA, the proposed land
 to be acquired was ‘cultivable’
However, locals from Neura says
‘it was opposed because about 250 houses were to demolished
to make way for the sports city’ and there was no mention
about so called ‘cultivable land’ etc.

Misguided by vested interests??

So, the sports minister (SM) – Manohar Azgaokar took it
to his own constituency ‘Dhargal’ in Pernem Taluka.

The new site facts:
- Area 15-20 lacs sq mtrs (at Neura it was 10 lacs)
- Vast portion of the area belongs to Prabahudesai also a SAG executive
- Vast portion of land is barren or uncultivable.
- Close to the MOPA international Aiport (ready in 7-10 years)
- Close to Railway station
- Close to NH
- 15km from Mapusa., 25 from Panjim
Which could also mean - More value to Pednem Land

So, the Dhargal locals accepted the Sports City without any opposition?
I really thought so until I read today’s GT which says ‘ Proposed Sports City
at Pernem hits a roadblock’

What’s the opposition this time?
The proposed Sports City will result in mass destruction of mango
and Caju plantations for which the villagers worked hard to grow
the crop for more than 25 years. The affect area is about 5 lacs
sq mt in Virnoda village.

So are there any leaders or politicians behind the opposition this time?
The two MLAs (BJP) Dayanand Sopte (Pernem) and Laxmikant Parsekar (Mandrem)
They also say 10-12 lacs sq mt land is sufficient but there is a move to
acquire 22 lacs.

“We wont allow such project to come up in our area
by destroying huge green area on which lies the plantations,
on which livelihood of many families depend’ says Parsekar

Has anybody got anything in their mind, I mean another site
for Sprots City? Be quick, the time is fast running out!
How about Sanguem or Quepem Taluka?

Btw, what is the correct pronunciation for ‘Sports’
I thought it was pronounced as in ‘fORTS’, pORT-town, airPORT etc

I see many Indian TV news readers pronounce it as ‘spot’ (pot as in tea-POT)
like ‘beauty SPOT’ or ‘on the SPOT’

Sports City also reminds me of the Remo's popular song 'Bombay city'

A few years ago Supermarket giant Sainsbury in the UK came up with a Xacuti
product and  labelled it Keralan Xacuti.  Selma Cardoso and BC 'Luftwaffed'
Sainsbury and forced this massive company to change the name to Goan Xacuti.

As for the spice girl shown on the mag, it is a common pic to appear on travel

Subject: Thanks for Goa

On witnessing ground realities, I salute genuine activists in Goa, fighting
against Mega-Projects, water/land contamination, destruction of fields/sand
dunes on beaches/water bodies/wild life/hills/environment/ecology etc Thanks
for selflessly fighting, to save our Beautiful Goa its Prized Identity.

The activists refuse to be cowed down, intimidated by the Specific
MLA's/Police, Government, Panchayat all other challenges. See my findings:

 (1) Strategy is to frustrate activists make them give up!! Vested
interests tire down activists by constant delaying/intimidation tactics.

(2) False Police cases on most activists; why no action till date, if cases
are genuine?

(3) Exception of some, majority corrupt panchas adopt delaying tactics for
inspection etc to give time to the builders.

(4) Respective quasi-judicial government bodies constantly over-ride Gram
Sabha resolutions, postpone dates, no show etc

(5) Government bodies supposed to uphold the law delay inspection
certificates many times manipulate the same

(6) CRZ norms constantly violated by Builders in collusion with Specific
MLA's/Police, Where are the enforcement agencies to protect our beaches?

(7) Opposition from some misguided Goans, who I appeal to look at the big
picture for Goa Goans i.e. we can have a good today bright tomorrow via
right/sustainable development; let's not destroy Goa for short term gains!!
We inherited this beautiful land its identity, from our ancestors
are responsible for the same to our future generations

(8) While many are concerned only with their careers, businesses, families
etc these activists spend a lot of their personal time, money incur a lot
of sacrifice for the benefit of all Goans; including those working (directly
or in-directly) against Goa.

 (9) These activists are an inspiration hope to us all; especially to
those who think that nothing can be done to Save Goa.

WE Goans need to take the offensive instead of a defensive for Seby and all
activists.
Put them in an international tribunal for the rape of a land
Can someone in the Goan daispora do this for us Goans??
It is shame what the Timblos and Sujoy are doing. They should be socially
blacklisted. And along with them the politicians and a Chief Minister who
supports their deeds
We should put them in the dock in the Hague and expose them for the
criminals they are for ruining our land
This is a good excuse for all Goans to band together and fight this
obnoxious lobby

 Goliath versus David

Among the many stories in the Bible is one of David versus Goliath in
which David a puny youth slays the Philistine giant with a sling
stone. David goes on to become King of Israel. In far away Colamb, a
similar battle is underway. A wiry Green is making life difficult for
a giant mining company. Enter a new vice president of communications
and the battle is taken to a new level – the legal level. The end is
awaited. Will David (the green activist) succeed in slaying Goliath
(Sociedade de Fomento Industrial Private Ltd)?

To think that the blogspot run by Seby Rodrigues has caused a loss of
Rs 500 crore to Fomentos, which has a mining lease in Colamb village
is hilarious. However, the fact that the company has gone to lengths
to file a defamation suit against Seby for reports published on his
blog is proof that this Siolim-based green is a thorn in the flesh of
the mining company. The petition filed by the company lists blog
entries which are defamatory to it. We do not intend to discuss
whether these entries are indeed defamatory or not. A court of law is
the right platform to test this charge, and if found guilty, Seby will
have to face the penalty decided by the court. There aren't any other
issues involved because the blog is not anonymous. In that respect
Seby plays with a straight bat.

The nature of the battle that is presently underway depends on where
you are standing. If placed on legal footing, the mining company
appears to be in the right as it has all the permissions to go ahead
with mining in Colamb. If you stand shoulder to shoulder with the
villagers of Colamb and green activists then the company comes out as
the 'bad guy' ripping up their lives and damaging precious forestland
and fields. If you love green Goa and have no stake in the mining
industry you will stand with the Greens. On the other hand if you have
a truck or two, a tyre repair shop or a metal fabrication unit, you
will sympathise with the miner. Taking sides is a hazardous job in
this situation because the positions taken by the dramatis personae
are extreme. There is no middle path here.

The Rs 500 crore defamation suit alters the equation a bit. While we
agree that every aggrieved party has a right to approach the courts
for redressal, in the case of Seby Rodrigues we question why the case
was filed in Kolkata and not Goa? Both Seby and Fomento are based in
Goa, the mine in question is in Goa, why go to a far off place like
Kolkata? One does not have to be Arun Shourie to conclude that the
purpose is to transport Seby to a place where he has virtually no
support and no access to friendly lawyers and to make it financially
difficult for him to run the case. Hence the court case has two
objectives –- defamation and harassment. This approach was adopted to
silence Rajan Narayan when he was editor of 'O Herald' and leaders of
 the anti-Meta Strips agitation.

It might be important to recall that an earlier attempt to neutralize
Seby by labeling him as a Naxalite failed when the proof failed to
match up to the charge. Then, Seby emerged victorious and the
sobriquet 'Naxalite Seby' was stuck on him by those who wished to
easily identify him in a state which probably has a thousand Sebys.
Nobody is questioning the technicality of whether the case can be
filed in Kokatta or not. But, if justice is the issue then the case
should be transferred to Goa where it can be heard. In other words,
the Vice-President (Communications) who has filed the case, should
also play with a straight bat.

The war against terrible taste
Goa Police Guidelines to identify terrorists

By Cecil Pinto

On its website the Goa Police Department has a colourful new page
titled Let's fight Together To Keep Goa Terror free!

The first part deals with 'Identifying a Terrorist. I am quoting
verbatim, typos and all.

By clothes unsuited for the season of the Year e.g. wearing a coat or
jacket in summer. This line has obviously been slipped in by a
Hindutava supporter to target Catholics. Everyone knows that however
hot the summer may be Goan Catholic males will wear proper thick
padded suit coats on every possible occasion – wedding, feasts,
ladainhas, even funerals. They will sweat by the bucketful,
perspiration further compounded by dancing and drinking, but the suit
will remain on till the end of the function. Most Goan Hindu males on
the other hand wear sensible ethnic clothing more suited for the
climate.

May 17, 2009 - Panjim News Desk: The wedding of Manuel Pereira from
Agacaim with Rhea Concessao from Santa Cruz was rudely interrupted
when an entire company of armed Border Security Force guards barged in
and arrested all the guests on the dance floor. Fortunately MLA
Francisco Silveira, wearing a double breasted fawn suit with a red
shirt, purple tie, white shoes and maroon socks, was one of those
arrested. He managed to phone the IGP while, standing in a colourful
line-up outside Cotta Mansion, and got the whole misunderstanding
sorted out.

Claimed Deputy Commandant Ganbir Singh, We were following Goa Police
instructions. All those people were obviously uncomfortable in their
clothing and we suspected they might be concealing some arms
underneath. A Public Relations Officer from the Police Department has
this to say, The women guests from Agaccaim particularly were wearing
clothes totally unsuitable for the season. Long skirted maxi dresses,
multi-layered suits and dresses made of that thick furry material. The
flashy shining outfits were not only mismatched for the climate but
also posed a security risk due to their metal content.

Santa Claus and King Momo with their bulky outfits and headgear also
become prime suspects. Of course the police also need not patrol the
beach areas, where foreigners wear little or no clothing. On the other
hand Indian female tourists who wade into the water fully clothed pose
more of a risk to themselves than others.

The second guideline in the Police document on Identifying a Terrorist
says, A person trying to blend with his surroundings by his dress and
behavior, Though he doesn't belong to the group. Wow! This places
almost everyone under suspicion and we're going to start the
Insider/Outsider debate all over again. The Bengali sitting at Edwin's
Bar at Aldona, not knowing he's being fed made up legends. The Trax
full of married stags from Andhra Pradesh trying to get entry into
Lounge Fly Discotheque. Uday Bhembre at a Tiatrist's conference. A
native Goan vendor on the beach. The unregistered voter at the Moira
Gram Sabha has of course been arrested before.

The last form of identification in the document is Anything
protruding unnaturally under this clothing as these could be arms or
Explosives.

Excuse me Mr. Pinto. There's something colossal protruding above your
waistband. Could it be your paunch?
No!
In that case Sir I will have to ask you to please lift up your shirt.
'Ok! Check
So it is your paunch
No, these are my abs. Feel it. It's tough, unlike a paunch which is
flabby and soft.
Abs? You call these abs? What Shah Rukh and Amir have are abs!
These also are abs. Just more extended than normal. I overdid it on
the Tummy Trimmer.

Excuse me ma'am. Please get off your bike and let us check the
protrusion in your jean pockets
What protrusion? That's my mobile phone. Can't you make out the
shape? It will take me forever to get it out of my tight pants
Then what do you do if someone calls you?
I have my handsfree kit here!

Excuse me Ma'am there's a fishtail protruding from the back of your slacks.
These are low waist jeans and haven't you guys ever heard of thongs?
Excuse me young man, there's something protruding in the front of
your trousers.
Gimme a break guys. She's my date and she's wearing a thong.
Something says I'm going to get lucky today!

In the next section on Identifying a Suspicious Vehicle we have this
revelation, A vehicle parked suspiciously for a prolonged time in a
central place or in a

Reading about the conflict in West Asia, It is my view that the conflict is
more about land and territory than religion. Muslims and Jews have never had
a history of conflict until Israel was forcibly set up in 1948 in Palestine,
thereby displacing millions of Palestinians. Otherwise, the Jews were
always persecuted in Christian countries like Russia, eastern Europe,
Germany, France, Poland. In fact Jews and Muslims share many common
similarities.
Both wear skull caps. Both grow beards. Both wear distinctive clothes. The
birth of both religions took place in the same region. Both abhor pork and
pork products. Both only eat kosher / halal meat. Both take names from the
Old Testament eg: Jacob and Yacub, Abraham and Ibrahim, Joseph and Yusuf.
Unless and until the injustice done to the Palestinians is rectified, I do
not see any end to the conflict.which has been going on for more than half a
century and shows no signs of abating even as entire new generations of Jews
and Palestinians are being born and drawn into the conflict. Injustice and
the fight for scarce resources are some of the main reasons for conflict in
this world.

Marshall

I agree with you entirely. Life is short. We should make it sweet. Thanks
for bringing back nostalgic memories of the music scene gone by. I too loved
the Beatles, Elvis, Jim Reeves, ABBA, Engelbert, Carpenters, James Last, Cliff
Richard, Boney M. I did not have much exposure to hindustani music, till much
later when I heard Md Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Saigal.

Mario observes:

Marshall,

Beatles, Elvis, Jim Reeves, Cliff Richard? I thought these would all be before
your time. You must be older than you write or found your Dad's collection:-))

Eric replies: Marshall understates, it is one common religion, an enigma
rolled into ironies ! Spread over a wide area, the out-of-Africa Semites were
essentially Hindu: Think 'Temple to OM' in Egypt's 'Shiva' Oasis, where
Vaskan-Tamil is spoken to this day. Both groups honour a common Father,
Avram(Abraham). A benign laissez-faire Faith evolved in an unkind terrain, and
the Devas were firmly in place after Persia was settled. One has to consider
the arrival of monotheisim in the region a calamity, when seen in the context
of the consequent upheavals of the last two millenia. Credit here is shared by
both Abe and Zoroaster, and violence by the latter's group drove the Persian
Hindus who survived into the eastern desert - Afghanistan, and then into India.
A millenium later, in a cute twist, we exported Buddhism to
Bamian !The Semitic groups had long competed and clashed with the northern
Hatti-Kadesh (Hittites). These Aryas/Kavkasians posed the threat that sent
Abraham across a thousand mile desert trek from Ur/Basra to Kannan(Cannan),
where the Habrus first confronted Samson-Arafat and his Philistines. The
desert is unforgiving, but new 'prophets' extended hope through their endless
vicissitudes. Mohammed was determined to be the last, but Bahulla and his
Bahais,in Iran, along with Ahmed and his Ahmadis in Karachi are a reminder that
'hope springs eternal in the human breast.'eric.

FN:
Hi Cecil, Is your interest here to raise genuine questions or just
rake controversy? I don't see such initiatives as a pissing contest,
and there's no competition here in fact. We are indeed grateful to
George Pinto for encouraging Goanetters to meet alongside the
GoaSudharop.org meet.

CP:
As a regular poster (supporter and advertiser) on GoaNet, resident in
Goa, and one who has attended at least the last six GoaNetters
meetings I asked a genuine question and Frederick labels it a 'pissing
contest'. What contest? Am I competing with Frederick? Why would I
want to? Even if he insists on his paranoia showing he should be
careful with his language. Pissing contest indeed!

-

FN:
I would like to delude myself into believe Goanetters also added some
little value to their function. Melinda has appreciated the videos.
But we cannot quantify that before auditors like you.

CP:
I am not an auditior but a bystander who did not come for the
GoaNetters meet and hence would like to know what was discussed and
who attended. If a meeting was held at all. Was it? Why the silence?

-

FN:
I really wouldn't know the intentions of the people who came (and what
exact part of the function they intended to be present for). But a
rough headcount tells me 84% or so people named in the photographs
have, at one time or another, been associated with Goanet. And we are
prouid of that link.

CP:
And 100% of those who attended have been into Panjim at one time or
another so does that make it a Ponjekars Meet? I am not talking about
being proud of any link. Just answer my simple question. How many
people attened the GoaNetters Meet that was well advertised, and what
exactly was discussed.

--

FN:
As far as people who didn't show up go, I was very disappointed to
learn that Joseph 'Boogie' Viegas was in Goa on Jan 6, planned to make
it to the Mandovi's, but didn't make it there. As old-time Goanetters
(oops!) would know, Boogie was one of the early tech pioneers of the
Net in Goa in the mid-1990s. It was he who sold me my first USR (US
Robotics) modem, in times when a 14.4 kbps modem would cost Rs 14K! If
someone who knows Boogie reads this, please tell him I was silently
cursing him beneath my breath :-) Not for selling me a modem that
worked well, but for not turning up! He would recall that we had a
cyber-skirmish in those way back days... over organising a Goanetter's
meet then!

CP:
Thanks for the long diversion but it doesn't answer my question.

---

FN:
Really, I would not place too much emphasis on judging by numbers
whether the Goanetters' meet was a grand success and largely
attended. For the record, I myself went for the GoaSudharop.org
event, and just was happy to meet other persons whom I know as email
IDs and say hi to them.

CP:
1) For one who constantly boasts about thousands of GoaNet members,
and runs other Goa related discussion groups (where he is not in
control) down, I find it strange that numbers are suddenly not
important.
2) As a representative of, and often spokesman for, GoaNet
Administration, and the only resident in Goa, I find it strange that
you try to duck the question. How many attended and what was
discussed? Or was this meeting also, like so many internal moderation
mechanisms, something the GoaNet subscribers need not be told details
about?
3) Regular annual attendees of the GoaNet meet like Vivian D'Souza and
Miguel Braganza did not attend. I wonder why? Since Frederick is the
singular (strange no?) representative of GoaNet in Goa maybe it could
be something to do with his functioning?

-

FN:
Should we be bothered about how many people Goanet attracts for a
meeting in Goa? (Average of 20 to 40 in each year ...)

CP:
If the figure suddenly drops to little or nothing we have to look at
the only Admin reresentative in Goa for answers.

--

FN:
I think we should be concerned about how much networking we manage to do... and
how many good causes these ultimately result in inspiring. Without
all that backbiting, lastwordism, one-upmanship and one-on-one fights
that simply bore everyone else to death in cyberspace apart from
building negative social capital.

CP:
Nobody is denying that GoaNet is a great thing. My only concern is how
come a forum with more than 10,000 members cannot get get 10 people
together for a GoaNet meeting in Goa. Or is there something wrong with
the

From: Frederick \FN\ Noronha f...@goa-india.org

I expect more from individuals like Dr Santosh Helecar, whose recent
priorities seem to have included jumping to the rescue of the VHPA
Inc-linked Sonal Shah, to seek to discredit John Dayal and Vijay
Prashad, to question activists and campaigners, to proffer lengthy
arguments that deny the possibility of a polarisation along communal
lines specially in Goa, et al...

Mario responds:

Fred,

Wouldn't you be far more productive, not to mention, honest, if you trained
your sights on Narendra Modi and the VHP instead of continuing to slander an
American woman whose only connection to the VHP is that she raised funds in the
US for earthquake victims in Gujarat.

Furthermore, you continue to discredit John Dayal by mentioning him in the same
sentence as Vijay Prashad. Unlike Dayal, who can only be accused of bias,
Vijay Prashad is one of the most hard working termites in the foundations of
the capitalist system that sustains the economies of the free world, provides
virtually all the considerable private charitable donations in the free world,
and sustains his own profession and position at an American university. This
guy feeds on the very system that he seeks to discredit and destroy.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia that sums up how cockeyed this guy's thinking is:

Prashad offered a communist view of Mother Teresa's missionary work in
Calcutta, designating her as a representative of the collective 'bourgeois
guilt' of western nations. In the same article he also commented on Mother
Teresa's alleged links with Charles Keating and Michele Duvalier (wife of Baby
Doc Duvalier). Denouncing the 'cruel rule of capital' he also offered the view
that the communists of Calcutta were the 'real nameless Mother Teresas who
conduct the necessary work towards socialism, for the elimination of poverty
forever'.

If communism was so successful in eliminating poverty, more countries would be
adopting it, rather than relegating it to the thrash heap of history, where it
really belongs, after all the untold misery it has caused already.

A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who
understands Marx - Ronald Reagan.

 Respected Editor,
Its very funny as to why so much time is wasted in discussing usage
of language.United States is a union of fifty states and has only one
language-English.Bharat has twetyfour official languages and yet no
common language for the nation.(HINDI is not yet official National
Language). It was wonderful to read at The Swami Vivekananda Retreat
at Ridgley(NY) that one should learn Sanskrit English along with one's

unite languagewise.

It's not just Maharashtra that's facing land loss in the hands of
urbanisation. Most states in India are also grappling with this
problem. In Kerala, for instance, there was a hue and cry when paddy
fields were bought by the 'Gulf-returned' Malayalees, to construct
swank bungalows. The government tightened the screws on them. Goa,
too, witnessed a similar trend, when its paddy fields gave way to
apartments, housing colonies and resorts.
http://20twentytwo.blogspot.com/2008/11/urbanisation-of-maharashtra.html

* * *

In states like Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu more
than 35 per cent people live in urban centres. But only 20 per cent of
people in Uttar Pradesh live in cities, only 14. 3 of Orissa is
urbanised and 10 per cent of Bihar lives in urban centres.

Spouse(s) Isabel Burton (1861-1890)

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton KCMG FRGS (19 March 1821 – 20
October 1890) was an English explorer, translator, writer, soldier,
orientalist, ethnologist, linguist, poet, hypnotist, fencer and
diplomat. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia
and Africa as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and
cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian, and
African languages.[1]

Burton's best-known achievements include traveling in disguise to
Mecca, making an unexpurgated translation of The Book of One Thousand
Nights and A Night (the collection is more commonly called The Arabian
Nights in English because of Andrew Lang's abridgement) and the Kama
Sutra and journeying with John Hanning Speke as the first Europeans,
guided by Omani merchants who traded in the region, to visit the Great
Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. He was a prolific
author and wrote numerous books and scholarly articles about subjects
including travel, fencing and ethnography.

He was a captain in the army of the East India Company serving in
India (and later, briefly, in the Crimean War). Following this he was
engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of
Africa and led an expedition guided by the locals which discovered
Lake Tanganyika. In later life he served as British consul in Fernando
Po, Damascus and, finally, Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal
Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood (KCMG) in 1886.

Mario's many pronouncements like the one below about America being an
altruistic society reminds me of what was once said about his hero
Ronald Reagan:

George Washington never told a lie, Richard Nixon never told the
truth and Ronald Reagan never knew the difference.

There is a very good Indian national security think tank, the Institute for
Conflict Management, with an anti-terrorist website called South Asia Terrorism
Portal (http://satp.org/). I have been reading articles on it off and on for
the past few years. They keep track of terrorist activity in India and its
neighbors on a month to month basis, and provide an estimate of the fatalities
directly attributable to terrorism and violent left-wing extremism each year.
The 2008 estimates have just come out. I have calculated the total number of
fatalities among civilians and security force personnel as a direct result of
terrorism and violent left-wing extremism. The top ten Indian states with such
fatalities are as follows:

DEATHS OF CIVILIANS AND SECURITY FORCE PERSONNEL

Assam --- 240 (directly due to terrorism)
Maharashtra - 198 (directly due to terrorism and left-wing extremism)
Jammu Kashmir - 159 (directly due to terrorism)
Manipur - 144 (directly due to terrorism)
Jharkhand --- 113 (directly due to left-wing extremism)
Chhattisgarh 102 (directly due to left-wing extremism)
Orissa -- 100 (directly due to left-wing extremism)
Rajasthan 80 (directly due to terrorism)
Gujarat -- 57 (directly due to terrorism)
Bihar 56 (directly due to left-wing extremism)

The raw data from which these numbers were obtained are located at:
Fatalities from terrorism - http://tinyurl.com/7dcbkh
Fatalities from violent left-wing extremism - http://tinyurl.com/vlwext

P.S. Please independently corroborate the numbers I have provided from
other neutral sources.

From: Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com

Reading about the conflict in West Asia, It is my view that the conflict is
more about land and territory than religion. Muslims and Jews have never had a
history of conflict until Israel was forcibly set up in 1948 in Palestine,
thereby displacing millions of Palestinians.

Mario responds:

Marshall,

This baseless codswallop proves what I said to Roland the other day, that the
Palestinian propaganda machine has been pretty successful. You can't create a
view out of whole cloth while ignoring all the facts.

The partition of Galilee into Israel and Palestine was no more fair or
unfair than the partition of India, depending on one's point of view. It was
brokered by the Brits and ratified by the UN.

While Indians and Pakistanis accepted their partition, with massive
displacement and mayhem on both sides of the border, the Arabs never did accept
Israel's right to exist AND MOST OF THEM STILL DO NOT.

Kashmir would probably gone to Pakistan or stayed independent if the planned
referendum had been allowed to take place - but the same jihadi mentality could
not wait in Kashmir, just as it could not wait for any negotiation of
grievances through the UN in Palestine. In both cases they decided to take the
law into their own hands and force the issue in their favor.

I recall speeches at Israel's inauguration where their leaders reached out
their hands in friendship to the Arabs - to no avail. No Muslims were
displaced until five Arab armies, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Egypt
invaded Israel simultaneously to push the Jews into the sea right after
Israel was formed in 1947. They got their butts kicked instead, and the rest
is history.

If the Arabs had accepted Israel back then they would have had more territory
than they have now and the whole area would have experienced peace and
prosperity because the Palestinians are just as enterprising, and hardworking
as their fellow-Semites, the Jews, as we see on a daily basis in the US.
However, just as in Kashmir, Iraq and Afghanistan, a small number of homicidal
Muslim radicals have caused untold misery for millions.

There will never be peace in the region until Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic
Jihad are taken down or neutralized one way or another. This is because their
founding charters all include the elimination of Israel, by force if necessary.
They have no intentions of living in peace alongside Israel, and even their
maps of the region exclude Israel.

None of this is going to happen if the gullible around the world treat them -
the aggressors - as if they are victims. The REAL victims are the innocent
Palestinians they have intimidated into abject sheep and use as human shields
when Israel retaliates.

Mario responds:

Whereas my observation has a foundation in actual recent history, the problem
with your comment is with its premise.

An honest bureaucrat is virtually an oxymoron. Since you haven't noticed,
amazingly after having lived in India and Canada, nothing improves under a
bureaucracy, because that would make the bureaucrat obsolete. A bureaucrat's
career advancement comes from making the problem bigger, or at least
maintaining the status quo.

This is one of the reasons that India went mostly sideways for 50 years and was
a contributing factor to the implosion of the old Soviet Union.
