It was noted and agreed by all, that the present scenario prevailing in Goa, was a result of mismanagement and lack of constructive foresight and if not rectified, it would be very detrimental to the future of Goa and Goans and that it would adversely affect our present and future generations. Among the many ideas suggested for the cause were (1) Setup of international network of NRG's, in view of better coordination and more participation in our constructive programs(2) NRG's to Adopt respective villages so as to concentrate and analyze the problems of individual villages and then direct actions (3) Maximise Awareness Campaign as it was noticed that a lot of Goans were misguided and facts misinterpreted. They have done well for themselves in the present System, crticise a lot, but are observers from the sidelines. They expect the NGOs to do the needful without standing up for them and be free to get favours from the ruling dispensation! A retired magistrate says we will never change! We are undisciplined, have no civic sense, are self motivated and cowards when it comes to standing up for justice and human rights! We require the danda to do our duty! Look at USA Disaster Management in tackling the aircraft ditching in the strong chilling winds and icy water of the river waters of Hudson Bay! Every passenger be it child, sick or senior citizens was saved whilst the captain ensured he left last after thorough check that no one was left behind. Pure professionalism and competence of all the agencies ! We do have ambitions of becoming a super power? I do not think we can dream of such competence here if we continue the way we are going where the incompetent rise and call the shots! Today's politicians and bureaucrats with our peoples attitudes surely justify what the magistrate said. Garbage cannot be disposed of.The people do not care to separate the waste and make it their responsibility at all ,merrily polluting the streets and rivers. There is no performance audit for work done commensurate with salaries received. Biometric recording attendance is resisted, bus fares hiked when fuel prices lowered, no proper tickets issued. There is an extended deadline for peoples feedback on RP 2011 yet people I'm talking about have no clue about the Questionnaire, many do not attend the Gramsabha Meetings. The charts and maps must be brought to their house for them to take any interest.Few follow traffic rules, bribe their way / use influence if caught. Government wastes resources and funds with impunity etc. DO WE WANT/DESE RVE ANY CHANGE?

I asked my English teacher, Who is this ANON and where he is from? I was told, ANON is short form of ANONYMOUS meaning ‘the author or the poet Unknown’ She also told us, he or she could be the one who does not wish to disclose his/her identity. As the book could not give the credit to the real but unknown author, they simply say ‘by Anon’. If it was say from A. Pinto, then the book would have said so. Or for that matter, if it was say from JoeGoaUk, the book would give due credit to JoeGoaUk. You simply can’t take people work and say it yours. If the author is not known, simply say ‘by anon’ which case it would mean that the work is somebody else’s and not yours. Here is a typical example from the Std. III text book, a poem by ANON. Those days, we were made to learn by heart all the poems and our mother tongue being Konkani, we really found it difficult. During the examination, there was a written test as well as oral test. And I still remember reciting this poem ‘Kite’ Kite I often sit and wish that I, Could be a kite up in the sky. And ride upon the breeze and go, Whatever way I chanced to blow. Then I could look beyond the town, And see the river winding down. And follow all the ships that sail, Like me, before the merry gale. Until at last with them I came, To some place with a foreign name. By Anon. (Other poems I remember (STD III) are daffodils by WW, Who has seen the wind? By Rossetti (?) etc etc Ok, you may say, what is all this about? Well, recently I receive a very nasty mail from a netter which was in reply to my post on ‘Goan Observer stealing my 4in1 casino pic subsequent GO’s reply. This was his reply (Excerpts) to GX group, later on forwarded the same to me. He says.. - I do not deserve any apology (while referring to GO’s) - For him and others I am a Narkasur who has come on earth from hell. - He intends to archive all my photos and use them in variety ways by giving credit for himself. - He doesn’t care for my feeling - That’s what I deserve for remaining anonymous - Stop boring him/them by whining when people use my work Well, he (whom I don’t even know) may have some points, but all I say is that the same mail/reply could have been sent differently without much hurting one’s feelings. About giving credit to one’s work, I learnt it when I was just 8 (STD III) and I thought the writer was lot more educated than me. There may be very few people in this world who would like to do things differently or anonymously. Let us not discourage them. Nasty reply/ emails can harm people in various ways, including sending people to ICU. So, please let’s think twice or thrice before hitting ‘SEND’ Let's LIVE and let's others LIVE joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

A visitor to one such exciting creation was so impressed by the meticulously maintained lawns that he insisted on meeting the gardener who looked after the lawns. When asked by the visitor of the secret behind the lawn, the wise gardener replied, 'The first part is difficult… levelling the land as per design, choosing and adding the right top soil, arranging the drainage and other things that are available in books. The second part is simple and easy… we need to just regularly mow the lawn, weed it and water it. Keep doing that and you get a lawn that continues to be like this.' What is true for the lawn is true for every endeavour for excellence. So often, we give our best while creating something. We manage the difficult part but falter at the easy part. Well begun, it is said, is half done. But if we do not keep the consistency, our best start can be undone. Consistency is the hall mark of the real achievers. For they keep working to maintain a positive attitude and approach to the things they start. They buttress their vision with a mind-set of mission and the ability to be both, dogged and diligent. Steadfastness holds the key to greater successes. Persistence is a value that ensures that we can BE BETTER at optimising a good start. No lawn can remain beautiful without a gardener’s sense of mission… To BE BETTER we must back initiative with dedicated determination! - Pravin K. Sabnis 19 January 2009, Goa, India. [Goanet] Portuguese family names
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * ANKA SERVICES For all your Goa-based media needs - Newspapers and Electronic Media Newspaper Adverts, Press Releases, Press Conferences www.ankaservices.com kam...@ankaservices.com Dear Mr.Faleiro, I made a trip to India in 2001 to attend to a Seminar in Noamundi and visit iron ore mines in your country. We were a group of two engineers and myself - a geologist, working for Vale - a Brazilian mining corporation. During our trip Alvito D´Souza - a native and resident Goan mining engineer, joined us and showed our way round in a very enlightening trip after the Seminar. We started in the Tata mines in Jahrkhand and went on to sites in Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and naturally came to an end in Goa. Apart from the technical side of our trip, I was quite impressed with India and the panel we had of its rich, multicultural history. When we arived in Goa, we paid a visit to Alvito's family. Though having a Portuguese family name, Alvito could no longer speak the Portuguese language. In fact, he explained that his father, having taken part of the political movement which led to the independence of Goa in 1961, had naturally also decided to break with the language ties as a part of his political motivation. Alvito's wife however could still speak perfect Portuguese, having learned it with her parents as a first language at home. I remember having also talked to their youngest son who was in his early teens at the time. But - I do no know why, I did not address him in Portuguese but in English which he commanded fluently as it happens with educated people in India. Now I have come across your considerations on Portuguese names in Goa and remembered a question that occurred to me later: has Alvito's son learned to speak Portuguese with his mother? I believe that - if he has, it could indeed turn out to be a very good advantage to him. If one speaks Portuguese, it will be easy to learn Spanish - for the languages are closely related and similar. Add Hindi and English, that you learn at school, and he would be fluent in three of the most widely spoken languages in the world today. Let alone India itself, he could probably find opportunities all over the Americas, not only in the US. If you happen to know Alvito and his family, send my regards to him and Eslinda, his wife. Yours, Nelson Borges(*) PS - In case you have that name in Goa, I learned recently that it stands for the medieval name of the city of Bourges in France; the name was granted by the French king Phillippe le Bel to a French military man who took part of a siege laid on Bourges in the 1100s and later moved to Portugal where the name was introduced.

Jesus Christ was the lamb which was sacrificed for the salvation of all human beings. This is the biggest sacrifice that God would offer for our salvation. Let us change our lives. When Jesus Christ rose to Heaven with a promise of sending the Holy Ghost which would give strength to all the apostles as they had been shaken up and were in grip of fear after Jesus was captured and nailed to the cross. But on arrival of the Holy Ghost all the apostles became born again christians. They called themselves believers to distinguish themselves from other Jews. We are still pagans and do idol worship. You may give excuses that you do not adore statues but the moment you bend your knees before any mud or wooden statues you are worshipping an idol. One is supposed to bend his knee before a cross because it is the weapon of salvation. We should bow our heads before God who cannot be made into a statue or His picture drawn. I am the Lord thy God you will not have any other gods before me was given to us with power and force. God wants His supremacy to be owned by all His people. It is the word of God that will give us nourishment and no other food. People may tell you lots of stories but they remain mere stories. There are many who go for mass and they receive the Holy Communion. If they had received the body of the Lord why are the people always the same ? it is because either we have not received it properly or there is some other excuses. Those who pray the most, those who attend the mass everyday have nothing extraordinary to talk about .They have not become Christ. When Jesus rose from the dead he appeared before some of the disciples and was found talking along the way asking them what had happened and they told him about the death of Jesus without realising who he was and when he came to their house and broke the bread and blessed it and dissappeared they realised their heart was burning when he was with them. When Jesus was on earth and when the apostles were with him they never left him but followed him everywhere.Their life had changed. They listened to the word of God preached by him. Jesus only spoke about the God's kingdom and never spoke about a sacrifice though the priests in the old testament offered a lamb in sacrifice. He went to the synogue and preached the scriptures .Why do we not take scriptures as a centre of our religion and read, digest and assimilate the word of God ? _ Much more than email – don't miss out on the rest of the Windows Live™. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/
[Goanet] Ref: National mineral policy to speed up mining
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * ANKA SERVICES For all your Goa-based media needs - Newspapers and Electronic Media Newspaper Adverts, Press Releases, Press Conferences www.ankaservices.com kam...@ankaservices.com National mineral policy to speed up mining NT NETWORK Posted on 2009-01-19 The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat while speaking on the occasion said that the state government wants the mining industry to continue to flourish while having a minimum impact on the environment. He said there is a need to strike a balance between mining and its impact on the environment and added that the state will soon have its mining policy, which was placed before the public for seeking suggestions and objections. He further said the last date for filing the suggestions and objections was December 31, 2008, and added that quite a few applications have been received which are currently being scrutinised by the government. The Controller of Mines, South Zone, Indian Bureau of Mines, Bangalore, Dr B P Sinha, the managing director of Timblo Pvt Ltd and chairperson of MEMC Council, Ms Radha Timblo also spoke on the occasion. Awards for mining companies were also presented at the function. Our Chief Minister has become a genius, he has at last, found a solution to our mining problems !!! Or has he ? - he wants the mining industry to continue to flourish while having a minimum impact on the environment. How long has mining been, going on in Goa ? And just what is the minimum impact that our esteemed CM is looking for ? Looks like the whole of Goa has been talking to a deaf man so far, Mr. CM the silt deposited on our river beds threatening the natural flow of our rivers, is it minimum impact ? The wells that have run dry, threatening humans lives, is that minimum impact ? The loss of water bodies and pollution of the rest of the few left, which is threatening human and animal life, is that minimum impact ? The fertile fields that have been covered by mining deposits and become barren and scorched, threatening livelihood of people, is that minimum impact ? The pitiful conditions of our roads in the mining areas, where there have been a number fatal accidents, is this minimum impact ? The houses and the lungs of the people in the mining area are affected by the air pollution and the sicknesses that have affected the people, is that minimum impact ? Above all the destruction caused to our flora, fauna and our forest, is that minimum impact ? If this is minimum impact, what is maximum impact ? When will you ever understand that open-cast mining is derogatory and dangerous to environment as well as human and animal life ? Mr. CM says there is a need to strike a balance between mining and its impact on the environment and added that the state will soon have its mining policy. Please correct me if I am wrong, WE STILL DON'T HAVE A MINING POLICY IN GOA ? WHOW !! I am certainly flabbergasted and unfortunately educated, now !! What on earth were our politicians doing so far ? Mining has been a major problem for ages and we have no state policy for mining, what can I say ? At least the CM was accepted the fact that mining has had an impact on environment but seem to be confused with the term called magnitude, probably he is one of the guys who looks at things in a much wider and broader prospective and waiting for the whole of Goa to be affected, all the mountains and forests to disappear, all the wells, ponds and lakes to dry up, all the people to succumb to lung related diseases, only then will he see the impact of mining on Goa and Goans. Shame on you !! Mr. Digambar Kamat, having eyes you are blind. For the sake of Goa and Goans, you should resign or you will be forced to do so by the Goa loving Goans.
