[Goanet-News] Goa to provide recreation base for warships (PTI)
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- Goa to provide recreation base for warships PTI Saturday, April 3, 2010 19:20 IST Panaji: Goa is all set to provide Rest and Recreation (RR) base for the warships calling the port from across the globe. An exclusive berth is being constructed at the port and the work is expected to be over by March 2011, Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) chairman Praveen Agarwal told reporters today. The Rs33 crore facility with a length of 270m and which will be 22m wide is expected to augment warship traffic to the port, which usually call for RR facility. Soldiers usually take break once in six months for rest and recreation and Goa could be the most preferred place for the purpose, Agarwal said. MPT, which is one of the biggest port trusts on the Western Coast currently receives few ships for rest and recreational purposes. Agarwal also pointed out that an added benefit of the new facility is that the soldiers who land for a break tend to spend lavishly which will boost the economy of the state. Meanwhile, realising that the tourists arriving in Goa through cruise ships are required to land near a coal dump or iron ore heaps, the port trust is also developing an exclusive berth for these ships. This berth costing about Rs47 crore will be for berthing non-cargo vessels including cruise ships, he said. The chairman said that the work on the project has commenced and will be completed by December 2011. The MPT catered to 19 cruise vessels during FY 2009-10 bringing in 18684 passengers. http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_goa-to-provide-recreation-base-for-warships_1367019

[Goanet] By John Fernandes
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- By John Fernandes Quepem Yet another day in Quepem town people witness the gory attitude of transport contractors and truk owners as they pay no respect to the District Magistrate South Goa G.P. Naik taking into consideration the hardship faced by the villagers due to excessive mining transport. The newly formed Quepem Taluka Mining Affected People Front whose members were closely monitoring and noting the registration number of every ore transporting truck via Quepem Town from 5.00AM to 7.00PM. The total number of trips via Quepem Quepem town calculated as 828 trips. The same is also recorded by video record camera. That as per the order dated 10/4/2010 passed by the Collector of South Goa G.P. Naik, reduces the total number of trips from Quepem and Rivona-Colomb from 1700 trip to 850 trips which mean 425 trips via Quepem town . However the total number trips transported via Quepem town alone exceeded double the limits that is 828 trips. The notification of the Collector mentions about the timing of mining transport from 6.00AM to 6.00PM. However as per the monitoring done by the member of the Front the transportation started as early as 5.30AM and the movement of empty truck to the loading point started as early as 4.00AM in the morning thereby disturbing the locals. Similarly the transportation continued via Quepem town even after 7.00PM. All the trucks were overloaded and were passing infront of the RTO deputed to inspect. There was also no improvement in the speed limit . As the trucks were transporting late evening around 70 trucks were stopped by the villagers of Ambaulim and were sent back. A incident of speeding truck was noted at Tilamol when a overloaded speeding truck lost control at the speed breaker at Tilamol church and scooterist William Rodrigues who was proceeding from Curchorem to Tilamol narrowly escape. The incident was reported by him to the RTO who were present at the Tilamol Junction deputed to monitor the mining truck and the RTO then took quick action by stoping the over loaded truck. Sources informed the said overloaded truck instead of issuing challen the RTO sent back to the mine where they were loaded. But these truck were seen parked at Cindio’s Apartment Quepem. Hearing the Quick corrective taken by the RTO the mining contractor Subhash Fal Dessai rush to Tilamol and was arguing with the RTO. The RTO then released the other truck detained at Tilamol. Speaking to reporters Front member Ajay Pereira condemned the action of Transport contractors who interfere with the law enforcing agencies while carrying out their lawful duties. He further stated that such action against the law enforcing personal is nothing less then Goondagiri. The Quepem Taluka Mining Affected People Front Convenor Adv. Fedrick Pereira stated that people will not tolerate such type of Dadagiri. We are presently only monitoring the mining transport, and if the dadagiri of mining contractor continues than the people of Quepem will take action in the days to come.

[Goanet] Mining Is A Resident Evil In Goa
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- Mining Is A Resident Evil In Goa http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Quepem-locals-flay-Collector-rsquo-s-de cision-on-mining-trucks/35772.html http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/lsquo-Stringent-rules-to-curb-mishaps-i n-mining-belt-rsquo/35771.html http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Lucky-escape-for-scooterist-as-mining-t ruck-loses-control/35809.html From Sattari to Canacona along the eastern border mining thrives, no doubt it is a source of the badly needed income to the Goan coffers. Mining in Goa has been going on for ages. Along with the income to the Goan coffers, the miners too have made a fortune for themselves and with this acquired wealth they have managed to take control of the police, the bureaucrats, as well as the politicians. Money is a powerful commodity that can turn wrong into right in no time, and our miners are having a ball, with the politicians, bureaucrats and the police in their pockets. Even with all the hue and cry over the dangers of mining to nature, environment and to the human species as well, the government and the police are unwilling to take any action against this highly polluting industry, both legal as well as illegal. The CM who is also the Minister for mines, has promised action against the erring miners umpteen number of times but unfortunately nothing ever materialises. Instead there are only the implicit knee-jerk reactions whenever there have been accidents, with more promises as usual but no action follows, at this point in time, a mature and a tactful handling is required rather than the high-decibel theatrics of our CM. A lot of people have lost their precious lives, both young and old, to the mining traffic, and after the latest causality, a ban on mining traffic was enforced but again the money power of miners has played a pivotal role in not only lifting the ban, but a free travel time is also being allotted to them from 6 AM to 6 PM, with namesake restrictions on load, speed and number of trips, which are hardly of any consequence, as none of the restrictions are being heeded by the mining traffic and are back to their usual business of F1 racetrack driving, the police when notified of the non compliances, have failed to take any action, thus putting the lives of the public to further risks. Even after the assurances that erring drivers and transporters would be taken to task, by the Advocate General, just yesterday a scooterist had a lucky escape when he missed to get run over by a mining truck which had lost control. What action has been taken against this driver or the transporter ? Why is our Government not showing any concern for the lives of the public ? The affected people have so far shown tremendous restrain in the face of intimidation and abuse of money and muscle power by the miners, the government has to adhere to the genuine needs of the public and thread this path carefully, because sooner or later the public is bound to loose patience and resort to violence, and before that happens an amicable solution should be sought in earnest, that will reduce the risk to the lives of the public and bring down the pollution to required levels to maintain a healthy environment. My heart goes out to the people living in these mining areas, who breathe in the dust, day in and day out, their water too in mostly contaminated, their houses full of mining dust, making life, a living hell. It is indeed a good sign that the people of Quepem are on to the streets in unity with peaceful protests putting pressure on the Government and hope the CM sees reason before things get complicated and out of hand. [Goanet] Mining in Netravali Wildlife sanctuary border
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- According to the information just received illegal mining activities has started in on the border of Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. For the past two day it has been noticed by the villagers that 4 wheel loaders are stationed on the site and trucks are deployed transporting iron ore through the forest area. 50 truck loads of iron ore has been transported during the past two days. When Goa Foundation order to close down the mining inside the sanctuary and the bufffer zones of sanctuary these mines with over 1,500 tonnes of ore was closed down. Hectic activities are noticed by the miners during the past one week wherein local MLA, local ZP member, Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao as well as manger of Chowgule mining company was seen inspecting the site. According to the sources the mining ore is located in the villages of Viliena, Potrem, Todov and Bhatti, all in Sanguem taluka's lush green western ghats forests. All the attempts to reach the Forest officials in Margao office has proved futile so far due to public holiday today. Reliable sources however informed that the plans are afoot to deploy Goa Police in large numbers in the next few days to facilitate illegal transportation of ore through Western Ghats forest. [Goanet] White ants 'ate' 24 kg charas: Prosecution tells court
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- White ants 'ate' 24 kg charas: Prosecution tells court Panaji, April 14 : White ants 'ate' 24 kg charas (cannabis) from the official godown, the state prosecution department told the Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court, while opposing the bail of several Goa policemen charged with links to the narcotics mafia. This was stated by the state prosecution to the court earlier this week. Home Minister Ravi Naik Wednesday told reporters that heads of senior police officials would roll for their negligence in safe-keeping of drugs and narcotics seized during raids and later stored in the official godown. Even if white ants have destroyed the drugs, it should have been brought on record. You cannot have lethargy in cases like this, Naik told reporters, a couple of days after government lawyers told the high court that about 24 kg out of the 280 kg of charas in the police storeroom was found unsealed and had been devoured by white ants (termite). Responsibility has to be fixed in this matter. All the police in-charges who headed the anti-narcotic cell (ANC) during the last decade will have to be probed thoroughly, Naik said. The home minister also said that his department would initiate a separate enquiry into how drugs seized by the ANC were pumped back into the narcotics market in the state's popular coastal belt by police officials. The home department will now check the conduct of all the officers, including police sub-inspector Sunil Gudler who is holding the charge of the ANC at the moment. We have to get to the bottom of this, Naik said. Goa police are struggling to cope with the controversy after a spycam video uploaded on a social networking website showed an Israeli drug dealer Yaniv Benaim alias Atala boasting of his links to senior police officials of the Goa police, especially police inspector Ashish Shirodkar, a former head of the ANC. The police had subsequently arrested Shirodkar and five other policemen under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA). Subsequent audit of the ANC storeroom showed that a large quantity of drugs was missing, suspected sold by the officials to drug dealers. http://www.newkerala.com/news/fullnews-89609.html ~(^^)~ Avelino

--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- Augusto Pinto, Floriano Lobo and Anil Dessai are right. Advertisers and those who fund their TV channels are more important to these journalist businessmen than the public and cause of the public at large. THE FOURTH ESTATE especially the electronic media has become a properous business and they have forgotten their REAL MANDATE. There is a need for a FIFTH ESTATE to regulate this fourth estate. Sample this: Channels do opinion polls. Is this not fooling gulligle mobile owners? Firstly, the charge the SMS is higher. This money goes to mobile service provider. Kickbacks from this go to TV channel. The loser is SMS sender. Secondly, the polls give wrong picture as only few interested ones participate and not the majority. A person can send any number of votes. Since those who participate do not form representative sample such poll results have no meaning hence not dependable. Govt should ban such polls. Also SMS for polls must be free to the sender. If mobile company has to be paid, the charges must be paid by the poll conductor (TV channel) since it gains by obtaining free data. Government must ban mobiles companies from charging senders. Can CONSUMER RIGHT bodies take this up with the Government? Rajendra Kakodkar 9822101450
[Goanet] Rong+Colors_in Konk'nni
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- Hi all, I would appreciate any information that has to do with colors in the Konkani language. Many are the ideas which include or embrace color, including associations with occupations, lewdness, characters, etc. I am not writing a book, and would approach it differently if I was. This is the kind of small contribution that I try to make via Goanet. Its about memories and building up from there, for what is possible and for what it is worth. It could range from names of colors, pigments, complexions,; to color in nature---as in how a sky may be referenced from a placid sky blue* to as it begins to look sinister. It may be colors as heard or encountered in proverbs, verse, prose, prayer, sayings, curses, or epithets---kaya pottacho / pott kayen. English examples would be a black lie, or being in the red. What references have people heard made to the color of the sky or the sea. How about sky blue. Or say a red named/ remembered as being of a any particular place in Goa. How about a generalization of say a Laterite Red, or a Bhunyar Kallo (Tunnel Black), Batim Tambddo / Bhatigramma Tammbdo (Batim Red), Calangute Blue. Please understand that I am making these up. Writers its time you guys got in in this--I mean in putting out ideas through your essays. I am often amazed when people in Goa ask quite genially that I share ideas, so here some more. Perhaps you remember something from a novel (kadambari, romareo); they may relate to sexuality, character, characterizations, etc. Perhaps in a sentence you may have heard. Do talk to friends, family colleagues if you care to. There are very few colors expressed on a regular basis in most Indian languages, and Konk'nni is no exception. For instance what do we call grey/gray, brown. What loan words do people remember from Portuguese or can recognize from other languages into ours. What suffixes (or prefixes, if any) are commonly used as in bang'ra-sarkem, tamsor; to denote color as also a quality associated with a particular color, For that matter does anyone have any further thoughts on alhambradu/ alambrad(u) tuje polle? --- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- On reading this item, I was wondering if Mr. Digambar Kamat washed off his sins or whether he got a fresh coat of stealth material, off which everything bounces! There has to be some way of testing the Ganges waters before and after a politician takes a dip! Naguesh = Published on: April 14, 2010 - 02:01 HARIDWAR: The Goa Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat and his wife on Monday took a dip in the Ganga during the ongoing Kumbh Mela. The Goa Chief Minister and his wife also took part in a religious function at the Chetan Jyoti here. Mr Kamat said he prayed for peace and harmony in the country. Former Rajasthan chief minister and BJP leader, Ms Vasundhara Raje also offered prayers on the banks of the river. Bathing ghats in Rishikesh and the city along the Ganga were teeming with devotees on the occasion of ‘Baisakhi’ as about 50 lakh pilgrims, including foreigners, took holy dip. The DIG Kumbh Mela, Mr Alok Sharma said about 50 lakh pilgrims took bath in the bathing ghats of the river. There was no untoward incident in any part of the vast Kumbh Mela ground. Considering the huge rush of pilgrims for the last royal bath of ‘Mesh Sankranti’ on Wednesday, the administration has made elaborate security and traffic arrangements. Twenty-five companies of PAC, 20 companies of RPF, 10 companies of RAF and ITBP have been deployed along with contingents of state police at the Mela area. The Har-Ki-Pauri area would remain reserved for sadhus belonging to various akharas from 9 a.m. onwards on Wednesday. The three-month-long religious congregation would draw to a close on April 28. Meanwhile, authorities have announced a three-day holiday for the schools within the Mela area, official sources said.

[Goanet] How Goa got its talukas
--- Sign the Petition requesting The Honble Minister of State for Environment and Forests (I/C) to maintain the moratorium on issuing further environmental clearances for mining activities in Goa http://goanvoice.org.uk/miningpetition.php --- Though the Portuguese conquered Old Goa on November 25, 1510, their rule was confined to Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete for over 200 years. They could annex only seven more talukas in the 18th century. It was only in 1543 that they took over Bardez and Salcete through an agreement with Muslim rulers, after extending their jurisdiction to other parts of Tiswadi and adjoining islands, says Percival Noronha of the Indian Heritage Society. At that time, Mormugao was part of Salcete. In 1917, the Portuguese separated Mormugao, he adds. The conquest of the other seven talukas started with the tide turning in favour of the Portuguese. They got Ponda on May 31, 1763; a month later, on June 1, 1763, they bagged Canacona, and in the same year they got the remaining two talukas of Sanguem and Quepem from the King of Sunda. Bicholim was added on August 25, 1781, and a month later, Sattari, with due guarantee to the people of protecting their rights and religion. Two years later, on May 15, 1783, Pernem was added to what was then called Portuguese Estado da India, following an agreement with the King of Sawantwadi who held sway over these three talukas. The Sonda king signed a treaty with the Portuguese in 1764, compelled by Hyder Ali’s attacks, which helped the Portuguese confirm their annexure of the four talukas of Ponda, Quepem, Sanguem and Canacona in lieu of payment of an annual stipend to the Sondekars. Interestingly, what may be talukas today, were earlier designated as provinces. The province of Ponda or Antruj had 28 villages when the Portuguese took over and Queula, a village on the south-eastern end of the taluka, was its capital. The only district under the Sondekars was Zambaulim or Panchmal, as it had five provinces. The first province, Astraghar, comprised of 18 villages, including most areas of the present Sanguem (51 villages) with Rivona as the capital. The other province, Embarbarcem, comprised 38 villages, including Surla, Oxel and Sancorda. The province had nine torofos. Balli, with 27 villages and divided into four torofos, was the third province, while Cacora was considered an incomplete province as it was small. Chandravadi province was part of Quepem. The province of Canacona, with a same-name capital, had seven villages. Cabo de Rama village was called a jurisdiction, with Cola or Khola as its capital. _ Hotmail: Trusted email with powerful SPAM protection. https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx?id=60969
