[Goanet] Need to Modify Income Tax software to Recognise Goan Law of Property Division
Shri Shantaram Naik M P today demanded in the Rajya Sabha that in order to assess the income of husband and wife separately, Finance Ministry should give necessary instructions to the Income Tax Authorities to modify the present software which does not recognize special system prevailing in Goa. Making a special mention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday Mr Naik said the Portuguese law, which is still in force, provides for equal rights in property between husband and wife. In order to give the said concept recognition in Income Tax matters, Income Tax Act was amended by addicting section 5A in the Act which says where the husband and wife are governed by the system of community of property( known under the Portuguese Civil Code of 1860 as communiao dos bens, in force in the State of Goa, the income of the husband and of the wife under any head of income shall not be addressed as that of such community of property ( whether treated as an association of persons or a body of individuals) , but shall be apportioned equally between the husband and the wife Mr Naik said that the provisions of section 5A were effectively implemented till the Assessment Year 2008-2009 when the returns were filed manually . However, Mr Naik said that when e-filing came into picture, income tax software has not been taking cognizance of income division of Goan couples. The software of the Income Tax Department does not contain system to divide incomes as per the provisions under section 5A, automatically. As the authorities in Bengalaru have not incorporated provisions under section 5A in the software for accepting the same, superfluous demands are being raised by Income Tax authorities from Goan couples, Mr Naik said. Released from the office Of Shantaram Naik M P
[Goanet] Preserve And Protect Environment Says Union Home Minister
Preserve And Protect Environment Says Union Home Minister We Goans would like to sincerely thank our Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram for his impressive plea to Goans, to take care of our environment, coast line and it's pristine purity. Thank you Home Minister P. Chidambaram, your concern for Goa and Goans has indeed overwhelmed us, but more than the people of Goa you need stress on your own Congressmen in Goa, the value and the significance of preserving and protecting our fragile environment, especially our Chief Minister who has been holding the Mining and Town Planning portfolios for nearly a decade. Under our conniving Chief Minister, mining has devastated our environment, illegal mining is flourishing and our ecology is dying a torturous death. Most of the Congressmen in the Goa Vidhan Sabha are one way or the other involved in mining, even illegal and so no action is taken against these delinquent politicians because they are the power that be. If, in our hinterland mining has devastated our environment, on the coastline, it is the mega projects that have play havoc with our environment, filling up our low lying fertile fields and hill-cutting, instead of a green coast that we were used to seeing, it is turned into concrete jungles and the pristine coast has lost it's beauty and charm. As a minister for mining and Town Planning our Chief Minister is wholly and solely responsible for the degradation of our environment and our ecology and should resign as an irresponsible and non performing minister, least interested in preserving and protecting our environment and our ecology. Home Minister P. Chidambaram, like you we Goans too know that, our dwelling houses, agricultural land, gold, money or business that we leave for our posterity, will be useless, if we do not leave them an environment that is pure and free of degradation, we certainly know it, but the million dollar question, Mr. Home Minister is, do your Congressmen in Goa know it or care about it ? Re: [Goanet] Dollar to stay on top for another 50 years ??
Wishful thinking I believe The US dollar is like a house of cards, with nations around the world each contributing a card to this very shaky edifice. Pull a card out and the whole edifice comes crashing down. It serves the present purpose of countries like China, the Oil producing countries and other exportng countries like Japan, Korea and India to prop up the dollar so that they can continue to export their goods to what has been touted as the world's largest market. If these card holding countries lost their primary market, their economies in turn would be in a spiralling tail spin downwards. So for now they will continue to play pretend, and prop up the US dollar. Americans on the other hand are living in a dream world with delusions of grandeur, not accepting the fact that other countries are ascendant, and that their position as the world's only super power has long passed them by. Americans are now addicted to cheap and sometimes shoddy Chinese goods. The acquisition of junk gives them the impression that as long as they acquire stuff, all is well with the world. The USA no longer produces much of value to justify the value of the dollar. Oil and most other natural resources except Coal have been nearly depleted, manufacturing has declined, and the only resource America has to offer is the ubiquitous Services economy which can disappear in a puff of smoke. The American economy is canibalizing itself to the point that it is full of holes like Swiss cheese. Try and buy anything in the USA and the label will say Made in China, or Bangladesh or Honduras or Sri Lanka'. Whereas at one time Made in the USA had the cachet of quality, it is hard to find anything truly American. Food is the one commodity that the USA still produces aplenty, but even that is at the expense of over exploitation of the land, and the slow and insidious poisoning of the soil with artifical fertilizers and insecticides. How long can it last ? As an American myself, I sincerely hope that the US dollar declines to its true value, perhaps at about 50 percent of its current world value. While this may not be good for the rest of the world, it will be good for America. Initially there will be turmoil in the USA, with high inflation leading to social unrest and riots. There will be bankruptcies aplenty, including personal bankruptcies. The entire populace of the USA is addicted to easy credit. The only way out is bankruptcy which will run rampant through the entire country. The large segment of so-called under priveleged, will lose their freebies and the country will erupt like the recent UK riots but multifold. The pain will last awhile. Thre is so much intelligence, capability and etrepeunerial spirit in America that the country will rise again. Albeit slowly, the country will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes and be stronger, but it will have to accept the fact that it will no longer be a world power that the world has gotten used to rely upon to take care of conflicts and famines all over the world. I cannot wait for that day to come. God Bless America, Land that I love.
[Goanet] BBSM are Ideologically Retarded Stinking Filth
Anil Desai: 1. I would support education in any language including Arabic in our primary schools and govt grants for it provided there was money in the kitty. 2. I support the sizeable number of Goan parents who have no affection for regional Indian languages to get their children educated in English primary schools with government grants. I just wish this was done in a democratic manner. 3. When an organisation called FORCE led by two convicted politicians were threatening the government, I wonder whether Soter was asleep!! Response: 1. AFAIK there is no extra burden on the exchequer. The konkani medium schools which were already getting grants will continue getting grants after swithching over to English medium. Is there a concerted misinformation/ disinformation campaign on? 2. Since when have peaceful protests/ demands become undemocratic? Perhaps in Anil's lexicon bandhs and violence unleashed by BBSM are democratic. 3. Yet another piece of disinformation/ misinformation. AFAIK, FORCE was led by parents and not politicians, even though many politicians of South Goa showed solidarity. Perhaps Anil will reveal to us who were the FORCE leaders who were convicted and for what offence and cite the cases. Regards, Marshall
[Goanet] THE DUBIOUS PATH ONE HAS TO THREAD TO BE DESIGNATED AS A SENIOR ADVOCATE
The Advocates Act 1961 provides that there shall be two classes of advocates - Senior advocates and other advocates. An advocate with his consent can be designated as Senior Advocate if the High Court is of the opinion that by virtue of his ability, standing at the bar or special knowledge and experience in law that he deserves such distinction. Just alike the manner in which High Court judges are selected, the designation of Senior Advocate status also lacks transparency. If you are able to lobby and work your way around the Senior Advocate status is yours. The procedure for the selection as Senior advocate lacks objectivity and leaves much to be desired. The entire legal fraternity is aware that the system of processing the request to be designated as Senior Advocate and the procedure for that selection is non-objective, seemingly arbitrary and does not leave a clue to the person why he has been designated and why not. There is some kind of secrecy and non-openness in the manner that it is all done. It will be no surprise if Goa’s controversial Advocate General Mr. Subodh Kantak too is soon designated as a Senior Advocate. Despite two disciplinary complaints pending against him with the Bar Council, the Saleli Case multiple billing of 103 cases all documented and the Goa Government currently probing a case of professional misconduct by him, if Mr. Subodh Kantak is designated as a Senior Advocate it should surprise no one. Whether all this material against Mr Subodh Kantak will be considered by the High Court while designating him as a Senior Advocate will be a material factor. In any event, the designation of Mr. Subodh Kantak as Senior Advocate when it comes will only reaffirm how skewed and manipulative the process for getting oneself designated as Senior Advocate has become. [Goanet] What is independence Day
I am not to sure why this topic is being discussed on Goanet. Goa has nothing to do with 1947 but the bad events of 61. BC What is independence Day Thousands of Indians will go to bed without a single meal Those little street children and vagabonds will not understand the significance of the day. There are countless daily workers in the unorganized sectors, for whom it is another routine normal day of grind, and not a paid holiday.
[Goanet] 40th Aniversary
Folks, Today marks the 40th anniversary of the date Richard Nixon took the US of the gold standard. Until then, the US guaranteed that it would redeem, to central banks, any amount of US dollars for gold at $35.00 an ounce. The gold system that had worked so well for the US began to collapse when the US started printing estra dollars to finance the Vietnam war and to fund its deficit problems. Sounds familiar? 40 years later, the US has another crises of an unwinable war(s?) and is printing more money as part of its economic policy. Three years after Nixon's decision gold had risen five fold. They say history has a tendency to repeat it self. I expect the current financial crises in the US to last at least three years. And this time, towards the end of the crises, central banks will be buying gold to re-establish their credibility. Mervyn1745Lobo
[Goanet] The IPS officers who took on the establishment
Several IPS officers have waged battle with the Gujarat government over the last decade, raising issues ranging from fake encounters to an allegedly partisan role during the 2002 riots. The government, in turn, has charged them in various cases, denied them promotions and given them postings without promise. A status report: Rahul Sharma: 1992 batch. As DCP (Ahmedabad City Control) in 2002, he made records of mobile calls by police officers and politicians, including BJP MLA Dr Maya Kodnani, which allegedly indicate that they were involved in the post-Godhra riots. Details of these records were first reported by The Indian Express in 2004. The government has initiated proceedings for violation of the Officials Secrets Act and indiscipline. Sharma moved the Gujarat High Court on Thursday, challenging the showcause notice served on him. In 2002, as Bhavnagar SP, he had quelled rioters after which he was posted in Ahmedabad City Control. After his disclosures, he was posted with the CBI. On return to Gujarat, he was sent to head an SRP unit in Rajkot. He has also submitted the CD records to the Nanavati Comission. Sanjiv Bhatt: 1988 batch, suspended for indiscipline and poor conduct. In 2009, appearing before an Supreme Court-appointed SIT, he said that after the Godhra carnage in 2002, CM Narendra Modi had called a meeting where he ordered the police to let rioting mobs attack Muslims. Since then, he has accused even the SIT of leaking information to the government and filed a series of affidavits in the Supreme Court — as well as emails from the account of additional advocate general Tushar Mehta, once his friend, who has since accused him of hacking. The government had been denying him promotions and the DGP office later confirmed this was because of his controversial nature. Satish Verma: 1986 batch. Part of an SIT appointed by the High Court last year to probe Ishrat Jahan’s death, he went against his team-mates when, in June this year, he said the encounter could have been faked. The government has hit back with a case from the early 1990s, when an RDX consigment had reached Porbandar before being used for blasts in Mumbai. The charge is that he went soft on accused Abdul Sattar. Verma’s record includes ordered the arrest of BJP MLA Shankar Chaudhary for rioting, and once slapping BJP MLA Yatin Oza, who now heads the HC advocates’ association and is pursuing his arrest in the RDX case. Verma, given minor posts since 2003, was made joint commissioner (traffic) in Ahmedabad in 2010. Rajnish Rai: 1992 batch, now on study leave. In 2007, as DIG (CID-crime), he took over investigations from Geetha Johri in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and arrested IPS officers D G Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN. He was removed and later sent to the Crime Records Bureau and then to head an SRP training centre. While studying law at Gujarat University, he was charged with copying; the High Court later cleared him. He has complained to tribunal CAT about a downgrade in his annual confidential report to deny him a promotion. R B Sreekumar: 1971 batch, now retired. He was Additional DGP (Intelligence) during the 2002 riots. In depositions to a state-appointed panel in 2004-05, he alleged the government had ordered the police to be partisan during the riots. He was denied promotion to the rank of DGP (he qualifies on seniority) as the government took up a case from 1987, when he had been Kutch SP. CAT ruled in his favour, directing his reinstatement even after retirement, an order upheld by the HC. He has written The Diary of a Helpless Man on alleged police subversion during the riots. Kuldeep Sharma: 1976 batch. Denied the DGP’s post, he is now on Central deputation in Delhi. Heading CID (crime) in 2005, he had taken on then home minister Amit Shah , writing to the chief secretary about Shah being bribed by fraud case accused Ketan Parikh. Since then, the government has arrested his brother Pradeep Sharma, an IAS officer, in connection with a land scam. Kuldeep Sharma, given minor postings, went to CAT when his ACR was downgraded, and won an order in his favour. He was later implicated in an encounter case from 1984, when he was Kutch SP, with the CID probing him for murder and kidnapping till the High Court quashed the charges in 2010. He was also probed for wrongful confinement of a subordinate and his wife during his time in CID (crime); the HC has since stayed the proceedings. Brother Pradeep has been in jail for more than a year. ** http://www.indianexpress.com/news/the-ips-officers-who-took-on-the-establishment/830896/

[Goanet] Bicholim Elections : Cong plans to storm BJP strongholds in Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye PANAJI: After delimitation, constituencies in Bicholim taluka have not undergone major changes. However, the next assembly election is expected to witness interesting contests between incumbents and young second-rung cadre leaders. Bicholim taluka will continue to have three assembly constituencies, but Pale has been renamed as Sanquelim; the others being Bicholim and Mayem. The most significant development in the taluka is the inclusion of Chorao island from Cumbarjua to Mayem constituency. Bharatiya Janata Partyhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Bharatiya-Janata-Party(BJP) has always held an edge over Congress in this taluka for over a decade. BJPhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Bharatiya-Janata-Partywas able to win two out of three seats in the last two assembly elections. In the last election, Rane, on being denied a Congress ticket, contested as an independent but his nominees were given tickets by the Congress in the three constituencies of Bicholim taluka. Rane's candidate was able to win in Pale. For this election, Mayem constituency will see many new faces. Home minister Ravi Naik's son Roy Naik http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Roy-Naikand Corporation of the City of Panaji http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Panaji deputy mayor Rudresh Chodankar are some of the candidates. Rane - who is supporting the candidature of Naresh Sawal in Bicholim, Praveen Zantye in Mayem and Pratap Gawas in Sanquelim on Congress tickets - said he is hopeful that the party will be able to win all three seats. Last time, we were unable to win these seats because I was not a minister. Today, people have seen my work as a minister and they have confidence in me, said Rane. In the last two elections, BJP has been able to dominate in Bicholim taluka. BJP's Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar has won his constituency for two consecutive elections defeating former transport minister Pandurang Raut and Sawal. I am confident that I will win Bicholim seat for the third time, said Patnekar. Political calculations in Bicholim underwent a change since the municipality election, as BJP-supported candidates were defeated, triggering infighting in the saffron camp in Bicholim. The Congress candidate will be Sawal. We have won the municipality under his leadership. We have provided jobs and created infrastructure for the people. We have dented the BJP stronghold and are hopeful of winning this seat, said Rane. Sources claim, it will be difficult for the Congress to win this seat, as it will be difficult for Sawal and Rane to convince voters as most assurances given during the municipal elections are yet to be fulfilled. Similarly, Patnekar is also in a tight position because of the anti- incumbency factor. If Congress-NCP alliance continues, NCP may also claim the Bicholim ticket for its senior president Raut. A major battle will be witnessed in Mayem constituency between Congress aspiring candidates: Roy Naik, Rudresh Chodankar and Praveen Zantye, BJP incumbent MLA Anant Shet, and MGP candidate Milind Pilgaonkar. Naik and Chodankar have already begun their campaign by holding corner and public meetings in Mayem constituency. I have been approached by the people of Mayem to contest the election, I will try 100% for a Congress ticket. If I don't get it, I will decide at the right time, said Naik. Chodankar is being promoted by former minister Pandurang Madkaikar after the inclusion of Chorao island in Mayem constituency, while Praveen Zantye is being promoted by Rane in Mayem. I want to contest from Mayem because Chorao is my native place. As I am a Congress man, I will try for a Congress ticket. If not, then on any other party ticket or as an independent. However, I am sure that I will contest the assembly election from Mayem said Chodankar. Madkaikar had spoken to me, and we have decided to work together to elect a Congress candidate. It could be anyone, said Rane. As for BJP, Shet is confident of getting a second tenure. People have noticed the development work carried out by me even though I am in the opposition. BJP vote bank is very much intact in Mayem and even if Rane and Madkaikar come together, I don't see any problem in winning the next assembly elections, said Shet. In Sanquelim constituency, it will be a straight fight between Congress and BJP. Incumbent Pale MLA Pratap Gawas has got support from Rane. It will be interesting to see who the BJP candidate will be, as there is a possibility of former health minister Suresh Amonkar returning to the party. If not, then Pramod Sawant may be front-runner for the BJP ticket. Pratap Gawas said that he is confident that the people of Sanquelim constituency will send him back to the assembly for a second tenure. (ToI)

Photograph: Amit Bhargava for The Guardian Until a year or so ago, Narangpura was a small village like thousands of others in northern India http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/india. Its roads were muddy troughs in the rainy season and dust in the baking summer heat. There were no toilets, no sanitation, electricity for a couple of hours of day, no clinic and only a basic primary school. Most of its few thousand inhabitants were barely literate and many of the children were malnourished. Then came change, in the shape of India's first Formula Onehttp://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/formulaone track. The £270m, three-mile circuit is part of a vast, multibillion-pound project to develop a huge swath of land around New Delhi and kick-start development in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, where poverty levels are on a par with sub-Saharan Africa. The track – one of the fastest in the world with state of the art stands and a 150,000 capacity – is part of a 2,500-acre Sports City along with a hockey stadium, a cricket ground and a tennis academy. In the next weeks it is expected to be inspected and get the go-ahead given for India's first Formula One grand prix in October. The track is almost ready. It will be a major economic boost to the entire area, said Askari Zaidi of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd, the construction firm involved. The development has certainly changed life in Narangpura and the surrounding villages. The roads remain in an abysmal state, electricity is a rare occurrence and the school is as decrepit as ever. But, with huge sums of cash paid by the construction company in compensation for their land, many villagers have built themselves large and often gaudy homes or bought at least one, sometimes several, expensive cars. My family earned 70m rupees [£1m] and it was split between five brothers, said Mahahi Nagar, 40. I spent all my share on my house. Nagar's new home is a five-bedroom, two-storey white and green cement edifice which he admits is a bit big. Standing outside is a £15,000 four-wheel drive SUV which was a dowry gift from the family of his 20-year-old son's new bride. She came from a neighbouring village where many farmers have also been compensated for the loss of their land for the Formula One track. Though proud of his house, Nagar is worried about the future. He has no skills and no job and is eating money. I don't know what I'm going to do when it's gone, he said. Women in the village say alcoholism – long a problem in such communities – has reached new levels. So too has domestic violence. It's really bad now, said Kishan, 36. They have nothing to do and lots of money so the men spend all their time drinking. And they treat their wives badly. Why should they care? They have enough money to get themselves another wife in a single day only. Others talk of drunk teenagers brawling in the streets. Experts say that the tidal wave of cash has meant social change that normally takes decades has occurred overnight. There is a natural process by which rural communities become part of a city and its economy, said Dr Rajiv Kumar, an eminent Indian economist. But when it is accelerated there is more risk of social disruption. The villagers of Narangpura have now launched a court action in a bid to get more compensation for their lands. They say they have been underpaid. Such claims are common all over India as the economy continues to grow at up to 8% annually and millions of pounds are poured into infrastructure or commercial schemes or flagship projects such as the Formula One track. Conflicts often turn violent. Close to Narangpura is the village of Atta Gujram. Here there are fewer big houses but the same problem. A lot of people have already spent all their money, basically on cars or drinking, said village head Lajja Ram, 68. Once, hundreds of teenage girls from the village attended a nearby school, walking to class from their homes. The Formula One track has been built between the school and the village. To reach the school now involves an hour's journey in a bus organised, after

[Goanet] Margao Panjim shuttle service
Panjim Margao Shuttle buses The Nationalisation of this bus route was received with joy and was expected to put an end to boisterous and arrogant nature of private operators. The only comfort of this express shuttle service is that one gets a confirmed seat at a steep cost .The time difference between a few express bus service in the morning and the shuttle is negligible and cheaper Similarly frequency of non express buses must be increased to meet the demand at peak hours. The ordinary bus duration is more by about 15 minutes It appears that purposely and deliberately demand is artificially created for the shuttle service and the commuters have no alternative These are the ills of govt monopoly. Many a times the uncomfortable big buses are pressed into service to clear the swelling crowds . True, mercifully there is a special queue facility for senior citizens, pregnant women, physically handicapped.and pass holders But the general public has to stand over an hour to secure a ticket, This torture and inconvenience at a high cost has to be put to an end. In the peak hours in the morning passengers travelling to the capital city of Panjim have to be provided with more frequent buses to meet the demand The buses return from Panjim are held up as the traffic down at that time is scanty. If operating empty buses is not economical, then may be, the return bus trip from Panjim in the morning be designated as the normal route bus with a few designated stops. Alternatively more frequent route buses be put into service limiting the shuttle service only for those who need it absolutely and can afford the ever increasing price The frequency of the shuttle service must be increased and the time of standing has to be reduced to the bare minimum The shuttle service is cash cow to augment the losses, at the cost of milking the commuters. [Goanet] Anna Hazare and the Fast or Fuss
I would just summarize the above into following := 1. I want to fast unto death and uphold the democracy and keep Bapus values in mind , hence i want the below issues to be cleared := a. A sitting Prime Minsiter cannot hold the chair for more than five years hence he should quit after 5 years. b. No party tickets should be given to the children of the sitting MP's or MP's. 3. We do not need Supreme Courts, Judiciary, executive and Legislature any more ...issues can be sorted out through fast. 4. We do not want to pay for utilities in this country as the cost is high . 5. We want everything free hence govt should pay for since the electorate has elected them. 6. We want to the gap between rich and poor to be narrowed. 7. We too want to be rich . 8. No more Multiparties only one single party. 9. No more beliefs in law social activisim is the best method to clear issues. 10.I do not like the face of Dr. Manmohan Singh, nor Soniaji nor Advanji nor Atalji etc etc . If all of us want our wishes to be fullfilled through fast then what next? And the list can go on and on ...i do not support corruption at all but these fasts are never going to solve the corruption problem we have Indian Penal codes, Contractual Laws, Constitution in Place yet crimes and committed ...and acquitals and convictions go on , yet we have not been able to solve criminal issues inspite of a law being in place . If one wants to solve the Problem of corruption whcih is a very very small issue compared to bigger issues in India( and that is Health, Education, Infrastructure, Employment, cost of living , rapes, murders, long pending cases in courts , electricity and water in rural areas etc ...is the biggest epidemic . Corruption is not only in India but world wide we may see it in other countries and it may be under under a blanket. ) we need to rectifiy the current system and find a strong mechanism to put it correct. If everyone is going to fast in future to get their grievances addressed then there is no need of any law ...let everyone come to streets causing anarchy , so no need of a democratic process of elections , just go on fast and your problem will be resolved. I do not see this fast being a problem but it is a matter of Pride , ego, and stubborness by Anna and his team , while on the other hand the electorate has voted a Party to Power and not Anna , if Anna wanted to shoot to limelight he should have stood for elections and if his manifesto was convincing , then it would be a different story. Where are all the Gandhians they are supposed to be with Anna ?? All the political parties should find a way to resolve this issue of corruption and not leave to Anna , only hope Anna is not being used by some vested interest to do away with the current Prime Minister and Party .

[1]Anil Desai: 1. [2] Marshall Mendonza: 1. AFAIK there is no extra burden on the exchequer. The konkani medium schools which were already getting grants will continue getting grants after swithching over to English medium. Is there a concerted misinformation/disinformation campaign on? 2. Since when have peaceful protests/ demands become undemocratic? Perhaps in Anil's lexicon BANDHS and volence unleashed by BBSM are democratic. 3. Yet another piece of disinformation/ misinformation. AFAIK, FORCE was led by parents and not politicians, even though many politicians of South Goa showed solidarity. Perhaps Anil will reveal to us who were the FORCE leaders who were convicted and for what offence and cite the cases. COMMENT: a: Excellent points by Marshall - especially with regards to 'Money in the Kitty' and the democracy of the BBSM Bandh. b: Nice 'Bait and Switch' from Baba, Konkani is our Mother Tongue aka Matrabhasha - and learning is best in Matrabhasha to Regional Indian Language - paving the way for ducking the In that case, WHY Marathi? question ; even though it must be noted that the presently enforced Konkani is a rather crude sounding nasal dialect of Marathi. (No wonder, those Goans could not follow what Uday Bhembre was speaking). c: It is safe to assume that the FORCE folks were NOT bused in with the help of (GBP) British pounds. d: Agree with Marshall about the deceptive attempt to appear to be scholarly and centrist, and yet be involved in mis disinformation. Is there a VideoCD about this? e: Is it being said that Parents have NO right to decide to voice their opinion about the MOI for their own children? f: It is probably being said that :you must do as WE say i.e. Zhalacch Pahije! jc
[Goanet] Mayem villagers demand freedom
-- Samir Umarye Mayem Evacuee Properties Villagers Action Committee will be holding a dharna at Bicholim on August 14, to demand reversion of various properties situated at Mayem, which are in the custody of the Custodian of Evacuee Properties, to be given back to the Mayem Gram Saunstha (Comunidade of Mayem) as it originally existed. The people of Mayem of north coastal Goa, backed by freedom fighters and other organisations, on Friday declared their resolve to boycott the upcoming State Assembly elections if their long-simmering problems over evacuee property status of the properties in the village were not resolved once for all. Almost the whole village, around 20 km from here, with a population of over 30,000, had been declared as evacuee property, which meant that it was owned by a Portuguese who fled the country and settled in Portugal after liberation. The people of the village were agitated that the elected governments in the last 50 years had promised to resolve the issue but failed to do so. Mr. Kashinath Mayekar of Mayem Nagarik Samiti on Friday told presspersons that they had formed the association with the objective of securing reversion of various properties situated in the village of Mayem, which were in the custody of the Custodians of Evacuee Properties, back to Mayem Gram Sausntha( Communidade of Mayem, a village commune) as it originally existed. As the situation prevailed, the village of Mayem comprises various properties, including 1,500 houses. That these properties originally belonged to the Communidade of Mayem and in or around the year 1816, the said properties were given under a grant to one Diogo Da Costa De Athaide Taiva. The said grant was valid for three generations. That accordingly, at the end of the third generation, the said properties ought to have been reverted back to the Communidade of Mayem. When Goa was liberated from the Portuguese rule and the said D'silva along with his heirs left Goa for Portugal. The Nagrik Samittee members said on Friday that around 1,500 families residing in these properties had been constantly facing problems from Antonio S. C. Pereira who claims to be the legal heir of the D'silva and blamed Goa politicians for not doing enough to resolve their plight. Singh focuses on graft in annual address By James Lamont in New Delhi [image: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (C) greets media representatives after delivering a speech from the ramparts of The Red Fort in New Delhi on August 15, 2011, on India's 65th Independence Day. India's embattled prime minister said that his government was taking the strictest possible action to stamp out corruption after a string of recent scandals. We are taking the strictest possible action in cases of corruption that have surfaced, Manmohan Singh said from the ramparts of New Delhi's 16th-century Red Fort in an Independence Day speech.] Manmohan Singhhttp://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7ba303f8-c673-11e0-bb50-00144feabdc0.html, India’s prime minister, devoted much of his annual independence day address on Monday to his administration’s fight against corruption in an effort to reverse eroding support for his Congress party-led coalition. Mr Singh largely avoided mention of India’s rising place in the world in his speech to the nation delivered from the battlements of Delhi’s Red Fort. Instead, he focused on an issue that has dominated national debate over the past year as scams involving the telecoms sector, the Commonwealth Games and the military have rocked public confidence. The 79-year-old premier’s strong emphasis on corruptionhttp://www.ft.com/Mughal-era%20Red%20Fort is a tacit sign of the concern his party has over vociferous anti-corruption campaigns led by the Hindu nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata party, and by social activists. The same polls showed that, in some states including Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the BJP was the beneficiary of anti-Congress sentiment. Regional parties were also gaining popularity as voters became disenchanted with the political bickering in Delhi. Seventy per cent of respondents said the corruption scandals had tarnished Mr Singh’s image, usually one of probity and national service. Aroon Purie, editor-in-chief of India Today, said support for the government had “evaporated” over the past year. “Public opinion has turned decisively against the Manmohan Singh-led government in the past 12 months,” he said. “For a government that was re-elected to a second consecutive term in office just a little over two years ago, the slide could not have been more dramatic.” However, another poll by the Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, showed that 38 per cent of Indians would still vote for the ruling coalition, enough to hand it an election-winning lead over the BJP. Mr Singh’s woes are fuelling expectations that Rahul Gandhihttp://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/71265f1a-aee5-11e0-9310-00144feabdc0.html, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, may take over the reins of government to boost the Congress party’s chances in the 2014 parliamentary election. Mr Singh tried on Monday to show his government’s determination to tackle corruption at every level of the administration. He said his government did not have a “magic wand” to end widespread graft. But he promised the “strictest possible” punishment for offenders and to strengthen regulators, the judiciary and anti-corruption laws. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/81fa8088-c717-11e0-a9ef-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1UzTGXQ4Z -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

[Goanet] Mumbai runs out of space for its dead - Source : goanvoice.org.uk
Mumbai runs out of space for its dead 3:30 PM Monday Aug 15, 2011 An Indian worker digs a non-permanent grave at a cemetery on the grounds of St Andrew's Church in Bandra, one of the oldest Roman Catholic places of worship in Mumbai. Photo / AFP Simple marble gravestones lie flat in the grounds of St Andrew's Church in Bandra, one of the oldest Roman Catholic places of worship in the Indian city of Mumbai. The names on the tombs bear witness to the city's Portuguese heritage, as a groundsman sweeps wet leaves from generations of Da Silvas, D'Souzas, Pintos, Pereiras, Furtados and Fonsecas. Behind the white-washed church, are newer, much smaller memorials, stacked on top of one another like drawers in a high perimeter wall bordering the sea. Inside these niches are the mortal remains of the more recently deceased, whose bones have been disinterred and replaced by those who have died in the last year or two. The spiralling cost of land and its lack of availability is a major issue for the estimated 18 million people crammed into India's financial and entertainment capital. But increasingly, the squeeze is affecting the city's dead, prompting changes in centuries-old rituals, forcing up the cost of burials or leading to practical solutions to tackle space constraints. It's an issue in all the churches. There's a lack of space, admitted Father Michael Goveas, a parish priest at St Andrew's, where flattened tombstones are found even in the corridors leading to the main church. We're no longer giving permission for permanent graves. Anyone who has a permanent (family) plot can still utilise them. For everyone else, we give niches, he told AFP. The lack of burial space, a growing problem for minority Christians and Muslims in India's fast-growing big cities as well as many countries around the world, is particularly acute in Mumbai. The local authorities estimate there is just 1.3 square feet (0.12 square metres) of green open space per person, making it one of the most densely-populated places in the world. One solution submitted last year to the US-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat suggested building a tower, with space for Christian and Muslim burials and Hindu cremations. The idea's thrust was that traditional solutions were unlikely to succeed, as older churches - and even the newer, state-run public cemeteries in outlying districts - stop providing graves in perpetuity. Cemeteries have a system where they don't leave the bodies for more than two years. Then the bones are moved to an ossuary, said Father Anthony Charanghat, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Bombay. One significant consequence of the space crunch is the increasing number of Catholics opting for cremation - the norm amongst Hindus - which was once viewed by the Church as a denial of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You used to have to get permission (to be cremated), said Father Michael. Now, it's becoming more widespread... The idea that if you burn there's no resurrection doesn't exist any more. If you're buried or burnt, it's the same thing. Demand for burial plots has led some city churches to advocate the use of linen shrouds or coffins made from plywood to speed up the decomposition process, said Dolphy D'Souza, from the Bombay Catholic Sabha, a community group. With the sizeable increase in population and lack of space, [burial] has become very difficult and the turnaround has become something like 18 months after the body is buried, he added. Sometimes they have to rush it through. Protracted disputes have also raged over the allocation of new land reserved for burials and over the building of walls to house the disinterred bones, he added. Undertakers say that the cost of the diminishing number of burial plots available on a 30-year lease in private cemeteries has gone up in line with sky-rocketing real estate prices. Funeral director Dion Pinto said a basic 6.5 by three foot (1.99 by 0.9 metre) plot has risen as much as five fold in recent years. Six or seven years ago it was about 5000 rupees ($132) for a plot. Now it's gone up. It's like the property rates, he added. The situation is met with resignation by many Muslims, who face a similar squeeze on burial space. At Bada Qabrastan, the city's largest Muslim cemetery where some 5000 people are laid to rest beneath coconut trees, rose bushes and trellises with creeping plants, officials are matter-of-fact. Any Muslim can be buried here, providing they have the right paperwork from the municipal authorities, said Shakil Ahmed Shabazker, who manages the cemetery spread over eight acres of prime real estate in south Mumbai. Unmarked graves of unclaimed bodies are dug up after a year. We shift the bones to one side respectfully and dig in the same place, he added. - AAP

[Goanet] THE SALESIANS IN GOA
Dear Friends, Even though by the international rules, those at Bcc can address only the SENDER, please feel free to address your wishes to Fr. Ian Figueiredo and the Salesians at the CC. The programme released to the press is like this: Panjim : Don Bosco shrine: 18th to 21st August. Vasco: St. Andrew’s Church: 21st August, afternoon. Fatorda : Don Bosco : 21st to 23rd August. I hope all of you – whatever may be your religion - will visit the Shrines in one the three places, where the relics will be kept for public veneration Permit me to suggest to you: DO NOT take bouquets, garlands of flowers, etc. which will wilt and thrown out! Also to not take photos, holy pictures, rosaries, wax materials to “be touched to Don Bosco” It is a tradition in Goa. But in my opinion it’s absolutely meaningless. First of all, you will NOT be able to “touch” because the relics are in a glass container and “Neither is it an object of superstitions, nor does it have divine powers”. (To quote Fr. Provincial Figueiredo) Instead give any financial help to the cause of the Salesians in Goa. It will be an act of charity. IF you wish to have a photo of the relics, take your camera and silently click, without disturbing the solemnity of the occasion. I presume that there will be a book counter where you can purchase literature and other spiritual materials. Kindly forward this letter to all your own friends around the world, especially to Goans, and Salesians in your own country. Many of them might have done their studies in the “Don Bosco” - Goa or in other city of India or other countries. The Panjim Shrine is quite large. After venerating the Relics, you can seat, relax and meditate: What lead this country pumpkin of Belchi in Italy, Giovanni Belchior Bosco, to do this “miracle” of starting this Organization for the benefits of the YOUTH? What lead our Goan Fr. Joseph Vaz, born in Benaulim, to renounce the Mitre and the Staff and the golden Pectoral Cross studded with diamonds, pearls and all sort of precious stones, and consecrated as a Bishop, and to go barefooted to Ceylon, dressed like a “sanyassi”? Only one word will echo in our minds: JESUS! The same JESUS born in a manger who enlightened our own MAHATMA GANDHI with his “Sermon on the Mountain” and on this day, when we celebrate our Independence, I convey to you, my friend, my good wishes JAI HIND ….JAI GOA Warm regards. [Goanet] Preserving Goa’s identity
http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=1176boxid=1335846uid=dat=8%2f16%2f2011 *Preserving Goa’s identity* Cristo Fernandes I have been following the fuss being made on the medium of instruction ( MoI) issue for a very long time. I am sure people of Goa are sick and tired of the BBSM’s propaganda. The BBSM began garnering the support of university students to support their ‘ cause’. What language have these students been studying in till date, that they are now supporting the BBSM? Who are BBSM to tell students what language they are supposed to learn in? Also, they cannot dictate terms to the parents. It is our children and we will teach our children as we want them to learn. I studied in an English medium school, but I have never forgotten my culture and language. Konkani was a subject taught from Std. I to X. That was more than enough to learn Konkani. People do not have to learn in Konkani medium to know about Goa’s culture and identity. As Goans, it is in our blood. English is a universal language and therefore must be learnt. Students should learn English at the primary level to ensure a better future. BBSM is talking about identity and culture of Goa. Our land is being grabbed by foreigners and migrants. Our beautiful hills, lakes, rivers, and fields beaches are being destroyed by mega projects. Is this Goa’s real identity? If the BBSM is talking about preserving Goa’s true identity, they should first stop all mega projects in Goa, and return our beautiful land to us, and stop all migrants from flourishing like mushrooms. How many Goans have obtained jobs in the government offices by learning Konkani? Our government cannot provide jobs for Goans. All the big posts are held by outsiders. Did they learn Konkani for this? Why doesn’t BBSM tell all the companies establishing themselves in Goa to give job only to Goans and not outsiders? BBSM should research thoroughly before they talk about identity and culture of Goa. We can learn Konkani and teach our children Konkani at home. In school, it is sufficient to learn Konkani as a subject but English must be made the medium of instruction at the primary level in schools. Where was the BBSM when people were fighting for Konkani in 1986? I love Goa and Konkani. No one can take Konkani away from us and our identity. I support English because I want our children to learn in English so that they are ensured of a better future. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. [Goanet] NEWS-SIOLIM: Festival of Plants Flowers 2011, Goa (Joel D'Souza, Flickr)
Festival of Plants Flowers 2011, Goa The three-day 20th annual Festival of Plants and Flowers at SFX School, Siolim, Goa, India, was inaugurated by Mr Maendra Joslyn Alvares of BIG Foot, on 13 August. The theme this year is Medicine from medicinal plants in Goa. Students from different schools presented projects on the medicinal uses of Goan plants along with a potted specimen of the plant. There were also on display of ornamental plants. The Food Drug Administration, Legal Metrology [Weights Measures] of Goa and the PWD also participated besides several prominent Goa nurseries, selling ornamental plants , organic garden inputs including seeds, manures and insect repellents, panchagavya, EM, etc and books. Begun by the SFX School's PTA and a few public spirited neighbours led by the indomitable cartoonist, Alexyz Fernandes, and guided by experienced botanist Miguel Braganza, this green event is now managed by the Eco Club with the whole hearted support of the Fransalians [MSFS] and their eco-Advisors Seby Diogo Pinto [who leads from the 'Forefront'] and Robert D' Mello. The Botanical Society of Goa, the Directorate of Agriculture's Zonal Agriculture Office-Mapusa and Vikas Nursery have always been a part of this festival since 1992. The veteran stalls of the Festival - Apurbai's Philu and Francis Borges from Assagao, Garden Glory's Alex and Lynette, Vikas Nursery from Dhargalim and Ashok Dande and later-day additions like Green Essentials - added their own charm and importance. On 15 August 2011 15:46, Nelson Lopes nellope...@gmail.com wrote: what is Independence day we are Indians first and not the other way around Nelson Lopes Chinchinim 9850926276 RESPONSE: Aree baba once again. Most Goans in Goa and probably the majority of Goans overseas see themselves as Goans first and Indians by default? Please ask Rajan Parrikar about his views about the influx of your brethren from U.P. Or please chastise our Joe U.K. for his photo streams on immigrants. I consider myself a Goan - really find it difficult, if not impossible to assimilate with the rest of India! Although I must confess, I am into KamaSutra but that too could be quite a Goan thing? Whether Hindu,Catholic or Muslim, Goans have what the French call, je ne sais quoi. For goodness sake, these people (Indians) know that Goa and Goans are different - they drive 2,500 miles just to hit the beaches and bars of Goa and to smell the Goan Feni. We were considered as cooks, butlers, house maids and piss artists - so pray inform me why we should now change? We are Goans first and foremost full stop. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Meneze
