Dear Carmen,

Further to this email, our car is expected back today and we are
planning a business trip to Panjim tomorrow. As we will be in the
Panjim area, we are wondering if you would have a few minutes to talk
to us both, about your plans, expectations, how far you have gotton at
this point in time, and if there is any help we may render in this
worthy project.

As we said before, we were really sad that we could not be at your
Talk on October 31st, despite making every effort to get to Panjim
later that day, and particularly so after weaving through queues of
cars to get petrol for the trip.

We look forward to your response,

Meanwhile, send our warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Subject: Fwd: Requests for signatures on the Petition to UNESCO

Dear Carmen,

We wish to thank you very much for sending us the notification of
your talk in Panjim on October 31st, which, very, very sadly, we
were unable to attend as we had two major problems. After managing
to get some petrol in Margao and were on our way to Panjim, our car
developed serious problems and had to be towed to the SAI garage in
Nuven. It has not yet been returned because they found some further
items with major problems. In fact, we have just had a call from SAI
to say that they will not be delivering car until, the earliest,
tomorrow afternoon !!

We are really sad about this, particularly we had been so looking
forward to your talk and to gain some insight into this very
important subject, especially as we have recently retired to Goa,
from Kenya.

We now have a request to make. If, perchance, you happen to be in
our area, Cavelossim / Mobor area, down South, kindly make a stop
over to our home or we could meet you somewhere nearer home at a
place and time convenient to you.We would certainly not want to miss
the opportunity of meeting up with you.

Look forward to your response, meanwhile our warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Dear Carmen,

It was great receiving your email and to note that you will be in
Goa on October 28th. Kindly let us know where you will be giving
your talk, in Panjim. We should be able to attend if it is at a
convenient time for travel in this mad Goa traffic. It will be
lovely to meet you before you go to Karnakata.

We could also inform a few of our new-found friends here in Goa and
together make an entertaining event of it.

Rest assured, we will continue to circulate your Petition and
anything connected with it.

Please give our warm regards to Selina, She has been our very good
family friend from Nairobi and we were sorry to lose her and her
talents to the United Kingdom.

Warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Dears Richard and Betsy
So nice to receive your e-mail and thank you very much for your
support! Much appreciated!

I will be arriving in Goa on 29th October and will be giving a
talk in Panjim on the 31st before I go to Karnakata to take part in
a workshop on tourism. On my return to Goa I hope to continue to
campaign in Goa if the crab mentality does not bring me
down. Thanks for the explanation by the way - I too wondered about
the meaning of that phrase!

It has been an uphill struggle to get our community worldwide to
cooperate which is a shame! Together we can achieve much more and
the weight of global public opinion on some issues can be very
powerful ! Yet it is so hard to get Goans to take action!

Thanks again for your support and keep in touch!
With warm regards
Carmen

Hi Carmen,

Happy to say, we are forwarding this message too to the 99 email
ID addressees that we have around the world, which includes the
Goan Welfare Society, Nairobi who, in turn, have circulated it to
addressees in their huge email IDs book. Good luck with your
endeavours to get the Dudhsagar Falls and its environs declared
UNESCO's World Heritage Site.

We enjoyed our recent trip to Hampi, another UNESCO site and the
Falls on our return train journeys from Hospet. Our family from
the U.K. treated us to a four nights/five days trip. Daughter,
Cynthia, is married to John McDonnell, the current M.P. in the
Labour Party for Hayes and Harlington, Middx..

We are recent retirees in Goa, having arrived here from Kenya in
June, 2008. We are enjoying our stay immensely, because of the
affordable cost of living ... but are certainly

NO NEED

The President of Pakistan (Asif Ali Zardari) was driving round Islamabad came
across long queues of Pakistanis outside several embassies wanting visas and
entry permits to go abroad and to migrate foreign countries.

He got out of his car and joined a line to find out why so many people wanted
to leave the country.

No sooner did people see their President with them they left the queue to
return to their homes.

President Zardari asked them why they were doing so.

They replied: If you are leaving Pakistan then there is no need for us to go

Cajetan de Sanvordem
Kuwait.

Cops

When I was a child we used to play a game named cops 'n' robbers.
Today, I guess, the game would have to be amended and retitled cops are
robbers!

With cops in Goa accused of rape, robbing and selling of confiscated drugs,
what is next? Are people safe from cops (never mind) robbers? Can a Goan go
to a police station today to make a legitimate complaint and expect to find
justice? If not Goans of good will are living in fear and something must be
done about it before things go from bad to worse.

We often hear stories about cops coming under pressure of politicians
and have to do their bidding. With police jobs up for sale, it is the first
step on the ladder of corruption, and obviously, it gets worse as the
stakes go up! I guess this is one more issue the Goans need to confront the
politicians with prior to the coming elections. With Goa going to the polls
shortly the choice before the electorate appears to be between the devil
and the not so blue sea.

For us expats (also known as cows and bulls) who have gone astray in
search of greener pastures, the view from paradise is indeed an eyesore.
Goa is going to the dogs. We, no doubt, are guilty of sins of omission but
also commission? That, I think, is giving us expats too much credit! The
state of Goa today is the responsibility of the people (not strayed bulls
and cows) who live there. While it is true the grass is not so green
compared to abroad, who needs it when there is iron ore at home? Little
mercies ...?

Hi Patrice,

You forgot to find out the following from your source:

Was there really a young deaf-mute girl, Idalina, in Anjuna, who
supplied tea and local snacks to hippies?

Is there a Flea Market in Anjuna on Fridays? We know there is one on
Wednesdays.

How could a deaf-mute girl scream at Bob Marley whenever she saw him?

Full moon parties were held on a full moon night and not specifically on
a Friday night.

Silviano Barbosa is a wonderful fiction writer (to know him more, please
read his book 'The Sixth Night' (Sottve Rati); his was a humorous
response. You didn't have to go to that length to find out if Bob Marley
was indeed in Anjuna, Goa.

Now I say: Tannem bob marli ani ami aikoli! (He shouted and we heard it!)

As far as Konkani is concerned, many foreigners who lived in Goa from
the late 1960s through mid 1980s spoke Konkani fluently. Of course,
their children spoke better Konkani. Presently, foreigners' children are
learning Konkani in our schools.

LOL here too at the purported Anjuna adventures of rasta Bob, yet I
asked an oldie who should know (one of the early 70 hippies). He wrote me:

But was he ever in Goa? You should know...

Simple answer is no. I would have known, if he was, surely. I remember
driving huge distances across India, in the early 80s, to his music on
the stereo, though :-)

Neither was Pete Townsend, BTW, which was the prevailing rumour, at the
time, because The Who had donated a drum kit, which Trumpet Steve had
brought to Anjuna.

Hi,

An update on the Goa Paid News story...

For the first time since the Goa 'paid news' story broke on October 25, a
mainstream newspaper has finally taken cognizance of the issue.

Credit to the dogged perseverance of the paper's rural editor P Sainath and
its local correspondent Prakash Kamat who have been co-ordinating and
patching together inputs for over a week. The story Goa daily stung by paid
news

and
another related story which was also published on page 14 of today's
edition of The Hindu can also be found on the

*Goa daily stung by paidnews
bug*http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2592365.ece
Caught offering to publish scripted political interview as ‘news' for Rs.
86,400
“First we'll do one interview on TV on HCN [Herald Cable Network] and after
that episode next week, we can carry the same kind of write-up [in the
Herald] … how it appeared today, no ... for the HCN thing you have to make
a payment of 50,000 [rupees] … and this particular size for Herald, it will
be 86,400 rupees … Only you will have to prepare from your side which kind
of questions you will like to answer comfortably …”
Paid news is no stranger to Goa, only this time it's drawing unfriendly
attention. Those are excerpts from recorded conversations between Tulshidas
Desai, marketing manager of OHeraldO (the Herald) and Goa-based journalist
Mayabhushan Nagvenkar.
The journalist was pulling off a sting posing as Bernard Costa, a would-be
candidate in the State's Assembly polls to be held early next year.
Sales pitch
The Herald's marketing manager is making a sales pitch when the journalist
calls up and asks how much it would cost to have an interview of himself
dressed up as news. The Herald claims to be Goa's largest-circulated
English daily.
“Ya, but can you send me a quotation?” the journalist posing as a candidate
asks Mr. Desai. “A rough quotation [of what it costs]?” Mr. Desai knows an
ethical line is being crossed and is wary of leaving a trail. “This is like
an editorial kind of thing, no,” he says. “I can't mention on the paper,
you know … .”
Money for interview
In the conversations, the marketing manager appears to confirm that Raymond
D'Sa [an aspiring candidate from Cortalim in south Goa] paid Rs. 2 lakh to
get his ‘interview' carried in the Herald of October 20, the morning of the
conversation.
Mr. Nagvenkar: “So Raymond's interview was [for] two lakh [rupees].” Desai:
“Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya …” But “you are not going to say advertorial, [above
the interview], no? asks the journalist. No, Mr. Desai [who first mentioned
‘advertorial'] reassures him. It would be just like Raymond D'Sa's
interview. “Today how nothing is mentioned no? Like that only … .” However,
Mr. D'Sa, when contacted by The Hindu, flatly denied having made any
payment for the interview.
Since these audio recordings went public, all hell has broken loose. Except
in Goa's media, which remains stoically silent on a scandal which broke
just after the Election Commission of India handed out the first-ever
verdict in Indian electoral history disqualifying a sitting legislator for
improper accounts and indulging in “paid news.”

Herald denies ‘paid news’ charge but ball in Press Council court
nowhttp://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2592371.ecehttp://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2592371.ece
Armed with recordings, transcripts, emails and cuttings, Mayabhushan
Nagvenkar has taken the matter of what he calls “an open and shut case” of
‘paid news' against *OHeraldO* of Goa to the Press Council of India.
The Press Council defines ‘paid news' as “any news or analysis appearing in
any media [print or electronic] for a price in cash or kind as
consideration.” Mr. Nagvenkar backs his complaint with audios and
transcripts of four telephonic conversations with the Herald's marketing
manager, Tulshidas Desai, recorded between October 20 and 22. The
conversations, he charges, indicate that the newspaper regularly indulges
in such paid political news. He also alleges that Mr. Desai could not have
pushed a deal like this without the consent, “tacit or otherwise,” of the
editorial leadership.
Asked for his response, Mr. Desai flatly rejected the charges and asserted
he had only been talking of an “advertorial concept.” He denied ever
interfering in “the editorial area.” In a statement responding to the
complaint to the PCI, Herald editor
