More info
In this age of fierce globalization it is high time that we formulate
'The Indian Film Theory', a theory that informs the films that Gaston
Roberge calls Indian folk-movies, seen and enjoyed more than once by
millions of Indians over a long period of time. Roberge will discuss
the reasons why that theory has not been formulated so far, the main
reason being the class mentality. He proposes a pedagogy of the media
oppressed comprising seven steps of self-education for liberation.

Fr. Gaston Roberge SJ is an acclaimed media critic and film scholar.
Having pursued an MA in Theatre Art (Film), University of California
at Los Angeles (UCLA), Fr Roberge, in collaboration with Satyajit Ray,
founded the Chitrabani — the only independent film library in Kolkata.
He has authored several books and contributed with many articles to
different publications on cinema. His book Communication Cinema
Development: From Morosity to Hope won the National Award (special
mention) at the 46th National Film Festival of India in 1999. Fr
Gaston Roberge SJ continues to be senior most faculty member at the
Department of Mass Communication and Videography at St. Xavier’s
College, Kolkata. He is one of the pioneers who initiated, cultivated
and nurtured the film academia in this country.

[Goanet] Vanxim: 'Thank you my loving mulnivasis', message from Maggie Silveira

2011-11-23 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

V- Victory A – Action N- Numbers X-X-ray I-Important M – Mog (Love)

By Maggie Silveira President, Bharat Mukti Morcha, Mahila Agahdi, Goa
unitPresident, Ilha de Vanxim Association

V- Victory:
As our cases at Deputy Collector’s court and beyond are very strong,
because we are deemed owners. Agricultural tenancy Act proves us right
all the way. To add further victory because Supreme Court law says with a
judgments etc that mangroves cannot be cut. Further more  victory
because survey number 8 is completely and fully a water body with
mangroves, mud flat, low lying area with two sluice gates. Chief
Minister Digambar Kamat, Chief Town Planner Putturaju, State level
committee, local panchayat did not carry any inspection on survey number
 8. The same survey number 8 is shown on the Regional Plan 2021 as hotel
and Resort project only. This is all next to impossible by law. To
detail victory furthermore because our Vanxim island is a very tiny in
the whole of Goa, but known for our forthright attitude and commitments
which people have seen and believed from 8th of August 2010 onwards… Victory as
a whole only because we believe in Godly Power, not
down pouring of money power. RP-2021 shows survey number 8 as
settlement zone for ‘hotel and resort project only’ 1,85,000 square
meters is a water body which by law cannot be sold. It is a crime to do
so. No law says that mining waste can be dumped in survey number 8 by
giving height of 2 meters etc. So Vanxim again a victory. Great live
Vanxim island with beautiful birds, mangroves etc. More to top as one
can experience the beauty of survey number 8 as bats, birds make it all
great as you enter survey number 8. We thank the Lord for these numerous
 birds, bats, water body etc.

A-Action:
highly efficient action plan all out on work for success in completion.
Many minds are at work, ideas conceded and implemented with a
accordance. Team work is all that makes our action.N-Numbers:
we at Vanxim are strong in numbers as our strength, our family members
also add to our nmneber strength from whenever they are in the world.
Numbers because “N” number of NGOs, not mentioning details are huge,
plus Bharat Mukti Morcha which is our foundation stone for our Ilha de
Vanxim Association.

X-ray:
X-ray in its due respect is highly expensive for any change to take
place in Vanxim. We all Vashekars are on high alert from all sides –
East, West, North and South. On all our survey numbers demarked etc.
X-rays are formed when a high speed stream of electrons strikes a
target. X-rays are used to locate brakes in bones, bullets lodged in the
body and other particles and mal function, and to diagnose and treat
certain diseases. X-rays examine minutely. That’s exactly we Ilha de
Vanxim Association and Bharat Mukti Morcha are known for.

I-Important:
Important as Vanxim is a treasure for all Vashekars because of our dear
and caring ancestors. They are highly important to us for preserving
Vanxim in its original beauty. In the good old days we did not have
Ferry boats only small wooden boats (Canoes).  In
spite of all hardships our century old houses were constructed with
huge walls still in existence. Our heritage kept alive by those very
important and dedicated Vodil.  You all mean so much to us. Amche Vodil amche
borobor sodach astole, amche purvoz amkam devanuch dillem dennem.

M-Mog (Love): Our
Vanxim is beautiful, original, no make-ups in use. Everyone who comes
to Vanxim loves Vanxim at its first site. Today Vanxim is known
throughout the whole world. What a proud feeling. Vanxim, you are most
beautiful bride that everyone loves you and we Vshekars love you too.
Experts say that love builds up everyday. Yes Vanxim you have proved it
all (right). Mog Vashecho
sogleank pavoicho, Ekvotant ravon mog Vashecho ekamekak ami diucho.
Vanxim amchi, Goem amchem. Ami soglim ekamekachim. Dev Borem Korum, Thank you
every one my loving mulnivasis.

[Goanet] WACI of Bombay (Calling Bombay gurus)

2011-11-23 Thread Carvalho
Dear Bombay gurus (that's you Roland and Eric),

Can anyone tell me what the WACI in Bombay would stand for? This would have
been circa mid 20th century. Maybe it is still in existence whatever it is.

Also can anyone recall a Bombay Womens Institute of Needle Art and Domestic
Science in Hira Bldg. And if you can describe the area around Hira building
mid-century, I would be very grateful. Was it a rough neighbourhood? were there
brothels in that area? Hard-drinking men? Men given to violence and battering
their wives. Or was it a posh area?

I do plan to visit the area but I can't visit the time period.

Many thanks,
Selma

Re: [Goanet] CSF Pak Telecom Authority, and Jesus Christ

2011-11-23 Thread Jason Keith Fernandes
The antics of the CSF while no doubt motivated by genuine concern seem
destined to do more harm than good. In addition, they seem based on
ignorance rather than an enlightened position.

Take the example of their objection to Jesus Christ being on the list of
banned words in Pakistani sms. The inquiry of the CSF has been One wonders
why gods of other religions have not been mentioned in the list and
Christians, who are already facing persecution in Pakistan have been
singled out for such treatment?

What the CSF does not seem to realize is that Jesus Christ, is a revered
figure in Islam, as is his Mother the Virgin. Christianity does not
therefore, have the sole control over respect being granted to Jesus
Christ. A more sympathetic way of reading the ban on the use of this word,
would have been to assume that the word Jesus Christ is often used as a
swear word for example; 'Jesus Christ! did you see the size of that bitch's
tits!!!'

Such a use of the name of Christ is offensive not only to a Christian
sentiment, but also to 'the glory of Islam', that holds Christ as a revered
and special Prophet. Islam categorically does not begin and end ( it does
end however) with the Prophet Mohammed.

More worrying however are the tactics of the CSF which seems to merely
mimic the troubling acts of the Hindu and Muslim rightists. A recent
campaign has been against the dubious use of the crucifix in a Hindi film.
While one can understand the discomfort and distaste in this action, the
calls for a ban on the film, is to only recall the actions of Hindutva
activists in a number of cases, cases that seriously threaten the secular
environment of India, and the freedoms of minority groups. One should not
forget that supporting a trend, will only lend legitimacy to such a trend,
preventing any legitimate protest when the same ban is then used against
minority groups (minorities of any character, not solely religious).

The campaign against the film was supported by the hierarchy of the Bombay
diocese, and it is a shame that even members of the hierarchy seem to lack
the foresight that is expected of them.

The CSF operates on the assumption of a persecuted Church. This may well be
a fact. However the manner in which we respond to such a situation calls
for a greater degree of caution. It calls for an expansion in the culture
of freedom in the country, not for the kind of communally based campaigning
that has thus far marked the actions of the CSF.

with regards,

and despite my differences with your strategies, in solidarity,

Jason

Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) Responds to Christian forum complaint
PTA takes Jesus Christ off the SMS list of obscene words
PTA Director Ahmed Pirzada writes to Joseph Dias about it

We have yet another reason to Praise the Lord. We added our little bit, by
merely emailing, joined by thousands. It shows how little it takes for the
LORD to bless one with success - Little is much, if it is placed in HIS
hands. To God be the glory -

The Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF), the Mumbai based activist
 Christian NGO had in a letter to the Pakistan President, Asif Ali Zardari;
Communications Minister, Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan and the PTA Chairman taken
strong exception to Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) including Jesus Christ
in the list of obscene words in text (SMS) messages. The CSF general
secretary, Joseph Dias said it raised serious concerns about basic
freedoms, like that of expression and religion in Pakistan. If such an
action was taken by a non Islamic or secular nation, singularly naming a
god of any other faith, there would have been a furore in the
communication emailed to the Pak authorities.
 ?
In a reply to Joseph Dias, a copy of which was forwarded to the Pakistan
authorities concerned, Ahmed Shamim Pirzada, PTA Director said the list
forwarded to Cellular Mobile Telephony Operators (CMTOs) is tentative and
under review. Your point is considered and rectified in the revised list
which has assured The CSF that words Jesus Christ were off the obnoxious
list. Earlier in his letter to Pakistan's authorities, Joseph Dias referred
to a letter by PTA's Director General (Services) Muhammad Talib Doger said
the order was legal under a 1996 law preventing people from sending
information through the telecommunications system that is ?false,
fabricated, indecent or obscene?. It also stated that free speech can be
 restricted ?in

Re: [Goanet] WACI of Bombay (Calling Bombay gurus)

2011-11-23 Thread roland . francis
The Womens Auxiliary Corps India was the Indian counterpart of Blighty's WAC.
It was a wartime women's volunteer group meant to help in the war effort like
the men's Home Guards which continues to exist in India today although as an
armed paramilitary police division.

Eric should be able to dwell at length on the WACI as his mother was in the
Corps if I recall.

If by Hira Building you mean the one on Carnac Bunder in the Crawford Market
area, Eric and I both remember it well as it was a block or two away from our
Alma Mater St Francis the Goan (not really) Xavier of Dhobitalao fame otherwise
known in highbrow circles as St. Xaviers, Fort.

I can give you a fairly good idea of that Hira Bldg neighborhood ambiance if
you confirm it is the one you mean. Eric of course will have so much more to
recount. He is truly the guru of British, Anglo-Indian and Goan Bombay.

been circa mid 20th century.

Many thanks,
Selma

Great News Indeed
And it is very highly appreciated and hailed.
NOT because Vanxim Island is safe. It would always be safe as long as sane
people are protecting it.
It is a Great News because, much that I have scoured this post to find the
usual most offensive and obnoxiously depressing WORD, I have not been able
to find it.
Cheers to that. The obnoxious WORD 'Bamon' and 'Bamon Raj' is missing from
this post.

And I have been waiting for this day.

In time to come we Goans must qualify to fight against CORRUPTION and Mal
Governance instead of fighting Castes and Religions.

As long as we fight as GOANS, no one will be able to touch us.
ENOUGH OF DIVIDE AND RULE.
DOWN WITH DIVIDE AND RULE.

[Goanet] Goa's Vanxim Inspiration

2011-11-23 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Today, Goa is on assault by the Anti Goans, who want to make maximum
profits today and let tomorrow go to hell. These Anti Goans come in all
forms including Politicians, Police and even specific religious elements.
However, what is inspiring that that there are valiant fighters Pro Goa
like those in Vanxim, who with their efforts are fighting off Goa's
Destructors; as I understand these fighters are achieving some success in
saving Vanxim. These fighters offer hope to our beautiful land, that we can
save Goa and this hope will only increase, with more people joining the
noble cause. Another remarkable fact is many of these fighters are women;
something I have also seen with Goan Women in other parts of Goa/Abroad. So
in particular, all those Goan Men who are silent/scared to speak/act and
all those who complacently say Kai Zaupa Na please take note!!

Re: [Goanet] CSF Pak Telecom Authority, and Jesus Christ

2011-11-23 Thread Santosh Helekar
Jason Keith is right on the money below. I for one have never understood what
is secular about this secular forum, and all other so-called secular forums
that are engaging in religious propaganda and militating to enforce all kinds
of bans for the glory of their religion? From my standpoint all of them as
secular as Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.

Subject: Re: [Goanet] CSF Pak Telecom Authority, and Jesus Christ

Jason

[Goanet] Advani, BJP, a former BJP man, and mining... (Tehelka)

2011-11-23 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
AS ADVANI drives from one state to the next, his message is the same.
He gives gathered crowds facts on the stash of black money lying in
overseas accounts. These are facts he claims to have got from a
Washington, DC, based think-tank. He urges the throng to take a vow to
eschew black money and bring home that is lying abroad.

The template messaging is not without its surprises. As he enters Goa,
a Congressruled state, where a former BJP man is chief minister, and
faces charges of corruption and of facilitating illegal iron-ore
mining, he resorts to copybook cricket. In a move that surprises the
BJP unit in Goa, Advani does not take on the Congress government
there. He reads out earnest statistics on black money, but chooses to
call mining a larger malaise. “We were expecting him to take on the
Congress government in Goa head-on,” mutters a BJP functionary in Goa,
but all one gets to hear is a statement that goes, ‘Legal mining too
is suffering from illegal mining’.” Prasad calls it deliberate action,
so as not to pre-empt the report on illegal mining in Goa, which is
yet to be submitted.

The logic is difficult to fathom. The BJP had to remove one of its
strongest regional chieftains, Yeddyurappa, following a mining
scandal. Why then would it want the Congress to get away in just such
a context in Goa?

[Goanet] WACI of Bombay, etc.

2011-11-23 Thread eric pinto
Thanks, Rolly.  It was shopping row for the upper middle class !  Parsee and
Anglo cultured Ismailis dominated commerce, most were former students of our
school, Xaviers.  The stately building that was the Court of Claims of Small
Causes dominated the block, and the very popular Advocate Tony Souza-Roy had
his rooms next door. It was Carnac Road, now Tilak, the short avenue also home
to GT Hospital, the Comm. of Police and our much loved Crawford Market where
Parsee owned stores used magic to stock hard to find goodies like English
chocolate and syrups, Swiss cheese and condensed milk.
Hira Building was all Goan !  Residents included at least two of our school
teachers - our 'buddy' Lobo, and the revered 'JC' of the 11th. The family that
ran Carmelo Caterers lived there, as did the five Mascarenhas brothers: Fr.
Frazer now heads the College. I do not remember the name of the doctor who was
also a City Council member, but he and his long time 'fiancee,' Olive Sanches,
my aunt, both lived there. Goan owned stores in the building and on the block
included a drug store, clothing - Gilbert Lawrence !, and wedding gowns.
My mother's retired WAC khakis were a prized possession - Tow Row Row to
the British Grenadiers !  Parsee operated, they were quartered in the Parsee
St. John Ambulance building on the Talao Circle.  They did not function after
Bombay State was dissolved.
Needle Art may have been an Olive Sanches venture.  She died in Washington
about fifteen years ago.
Selma, it was nice to revive these memories.   eric.

Information obtained from the Goa Police under the Right to Information Act
has confirmed that Goa’s Director General of Police Dr Aditya Arya did
travel to Gokarna in Karnataka on Sunday October 16th. Sought under RTI
were complete details of DGP’s visit to Gokarna along with the log book of
the official Innova vehicle used by the DGP to travel to Gokarna

The Goa Police has however now informed that the DGP’s visit to Gokarna was
an official one and that the DGP had sought verbal permission to leave the
State with his official vehicle. The copies of the log book of the vehicle
also reveals that the DGP’s official vehicle traveled 393 kms on the day it
went to Gokarna.

It however appears that the log book entries were manipulated and that it
needs to be ascertained as to what was the official purpose of the DGP’s
visit to Gokarna.

It has been very categorically already stated by Chief Secretary Mr. Sanjay
Srivastava that no permission was sought by the DGP to leave the State on
the day he traveled to Gokarna. Chief Secretary Mr. Sanjay Srivastava has
already directed the Home department to probe the complaint against
Director General of Police Dr. Aditya Arya of having misused his official
vehicle by traveling to Gokarna on a private picnic.

Government vehicles should be strictly used only for official work. This
misconduct by the DGP was a gross abuse of power and an unnecessary burden
to the State exchequer. DGP Dr Aditya Arya who has been showing his
policemen the movie Singham and lecturing them on Gandhigiri should lead by
example and stop his blatant abuse of power.

brothels in that area? Hard-drinking men? Men given to violence and battering
their wives. Or was it a posh area?

I do plan to visit the area but I can't visit the time period.

Many thanks,
Selma

[Goanet] THE PRIORITIES TO SALVAGE GOA

2011-11-23 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Goa lies in a critical state so very wounded and brazenly defaced. Being a
small beautiful State blessed with abundant resources and a very
picturesque landscape it should have been India’s best State in all
respects. If immediate remedial steps are not taken we will lose the battle
to Save this once Paradise of the east now in a state of decay, disarray
and grave concern.

Goa needs to have a planned development with an environmental vision by
first improving Goa's crumbling basic infrastructure while also tackling
serious issues like garbage and vehicle parking in cities on a top priority.
Every citizen has a right to good roads, proper power and water supply. The
Planning and Development authorities (PDA’s) must be scrapped and planning
work must be facilitated by assigning a Town Planner at every Municipality.
There is an urgent need to enact necessary amendments to the Town and
Country Planning Act to ensure that land use is not manipulated at the
whims and fancies of those in power.

There has to be a check on rampant corruption, gross indiscipline and rank
abuse of authority currently prevalent in Government offices. With
corruption having peaked, Goa urgently needs the setting up of a
Lokayukta” to ensure public accountability of Ministers including the
Chief Minister, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Municipal Councilors
and Panchayat members, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Managing Director and
Members of all the Corporations under the control of the Government. The
working of all the NGO’s also needs to be made transparent and accountable.

Independence of the police force is a must. Ministers and MLA’s should stop
controlling and manipulating police stations. The power to transfer and
promote police personnel should vest only with the Director General of
Police, IGP and DIG.

To promote the interests of Goa’s educated unemployed the Government should
revert the retirement age of government employees to 58 if not 55 and stop
the extensions in service and contract appointments being given to retired
government officers.

We need to ensure transparency in recruitment of all government staff by
entrusting the entire selection process to a properly constituted Goa
Public Service Commission. Selection to all posts should be strictly on
merit. All government jobs should go only to people of Goan origin and 80%
jobs in private and other organizations must be reserved for those who are
domiciled in Goa for at least 25 years. Many of the unnecessary Government
Corporations which are operating as white elephants burdening the tax payer
should be wound up. The rest should be headed not by politicians but
experts in the field related to the subject matter of the Corporation.

Information sought under the Right of Information Act has to be made more
accessible to the public by having a centralized call centre in the State
to handle all applications for information under the Act as has been done
in the State of Bihar.

We must seriously look into the illegal migrant vote banks set up in most
constituencies by certain politicians. All bogus voters on the electoral
rolls of Goa need to be deleted as most of them are existing as voters in
their home state too.

There is need for a law to regulate sale of land to persons not of Goan
origin. Communidade land has to be protected for the purpose it was
envisaged by taking deterrent action against large-scale encroachment and
land use violation.

Everything possible needs to be done to keep Goa alive and healthy for
generations to come. Posterity will not forgive us if we do not thwart the
vested designs of those selfish and ever so greedy politicians who are out
there in full force to devastate, destroy and bury Goa.

Re: [Goanet] WACI of Bombay, and other memories.

2011-11-23 Thread Roland Francis
Carnac Road which commences from the eastern boundaries of Dhobitalao in its
residential avatar was firmly Goan but of a higher income class and with
much bigger apartments than those in Dhobitalao proper. Hira Building for
example would have had homes of about 1500 to 2000 sq ft. These buildings in
the 50s would have been 75 to a 100 years old but being of sound
construction and subject to British building codes of that time, stand
sturdily even today with little renovation.

The amazing story of Carnac Road would be the story of that rare virtue -
Goan entrepreneurship. Dan Lopez's tailors shop converted to a pharmacy,
Jerry Gomes' father's readymade clothing store Campbell's competing within
the best of Bombay commerce, the Ramos' hat and uniform establishment
serving the city's police force and the navy with good profit, another
Gomes' Dress Well known by all Christmas shoppers in its time and of
course Carmellos the catering people.

Bombay catering back in the day was the fief of Goan caterers. Cobana's,
Silvano's, MacRonell's, Medosa's and their like. Goan restaurants too were
known throughout the city even outside of just the Goan community. Colaba
and the Fort Area hosted the well known Sacru's City Kitchen, Kitchenette
and Gabriel Fernandes' Chiquita just off Strand Cinema. All Goan businesses
of the 50s were mostly of first generation Goans who took their family's
future in their hands and with little finance and a lot of hard work and
good luck, carved a niche for themselves in the big unforgiving city
commerce.

There were many Goans in the professions too, living on Carnac Road. In Hira
Building like the Mascarenhases. The senior Mascarenhas was an Art Director
for Lintas who wielded enormous influence in advertising. Souza-Roy of
Aldona the lawyer I remember well. He wrote several articles in Goan and
other newspapers and was a true social activist and a patron of the Bombay
Tiatr. The school teachers Eric mentioned were quintessential Goans through
whose Xaviers school classrooms hundreds of now famous Goan boys filtered.
They came like coal and exited like diamonds.

The sports coaches of the Old Lady of Carnac Road are remembered by boys
throughout India and the western world not only for the love and skill of
the game that Fr Fritz and Fr Arago before him inculcated but also the
competitive psyche that stood them well when they went into the wider world
to make their living and their mark. I am surprised every now and then to
come across someone in the States or in Canada with roots to Carnac Road.

The ancient Parsee liquor stores that anchored one end of the road were
unique. In the day that Prohibition was in total grip of the entire city,
these Parsee stores were allowed to stock real Scotch whiskies and foreign
spirits which they sold to diplomats and foreign visitors. I remember the
time when going from school to lunch at the many Goan restaurants in
Dhobitalao, I would spend several minutes peeking in at the beautiful
bottles displayed on the shelves with names that I read in Time magazine and
Playboy. It would be 10 years later that I would get to go to the middle
east to get my grubby hands on those bottles whose strange contents I would
taste for the first time, sometimes in injudicious quantities.

The other unique feature of the other end of Carnac Road was the Chinese
community that monopolized the corner. They were poor people with simple
Chinese peasant dress who sold all kinds of party and Christmas decoration -
balloons, lanterns, crepe paper, firecrackers, magic dust and all the things
that children love. I would drag my parents inevitably to that corner to buy
some nonsense or other which seemed so important at that time but trivial
now. Remember there were no iphones and nintendos then.

Walking down that memory lane would not be complete without mention of the
little kiosk like stores at the main Crawford Market Building, barely 100 sq
ft each that stocked foreign goods of all kinds from cans to chocolates to
shampoos to perfumes, so ingenuously displayed that anyone else would
require about 10 times that space to catch the shoppers eye. Those were the
days when no foreign goods could be bought anywhere in the country. I don't
really know the source of those goods. A small portion may have been from
customs auctions but the vast majority I believe were from Goan shippies who
smuggled them in for a small profit. In my many years in the Gulf when I
tired of shopping decisions to make for all the relatives and friends back
home and the hassle of carrying them on flights, I would make a trip to this
end of Crawford Market to buy those very same things at the same or lesser
price minus the cartage.

Right next to the Crawford Market and just opposite the Police
Commissionerate was the Sitaram Building in which many Goans lived. Now
emptied of Goans who have mostly immigrated to the US, it has become a big
bone of contention between the Bombay

[Goanet] Press Note-Meet the Artiste Star of Curtorim

*For favour of Publication*

*Meet the Artiste – Star of Curtorim*

Tiatr Academy Goa will organize its monthly programme *Meet the Artiste –
‘Kolakorak Bhett’ *on Monday, 28th November 2011 at 4:45 pm at Maharaja
Hall, Goa Woodlands Hotel, Margao. Vincent Florencio Fernandes popularly
known as Star of Curtorim is the artiste of the month.

Star of Curtorim was very much enthusiastic about Konkani Tiatr and Konkani
Song right from his childhood. He wrote his 1st tiatr *‘Put Mhozo
Bekar’*in 1959. The performance of tiatr was appreciated by people who
gave him a
boost to write more tiatrs in future. His 2nd tiatr was *‘Nirmilolem
Jivit’*which was witnessed by one of the most celebrated directors of
tiatr stage
late Nelson Alfonso. Nelson Alfonso congratulated Star of Curtorim for the
beautiful presentation particularly the opening chorus with the scene of
heaven. It is because of Nelson Alfonso’s encouragement he could stage his
tiatr throughout Goa with the help of the then popular dramatic troupe
Young Stars of Goa.

Then came his record breaking tiatr *‘Seza Pai’*. Infact the story of *‘Seza
Pai’* was a true story of a beggar who used to beg in front of St. Andrew’s
Church, Vasco and with whatever money he collected through begging he used
to buy biscuits, chocolates and fruits and used to distribute it among the
children who used to come to the church for catechism. Star of Curtorim
used to witness this incident everyday when he used to go to work at the
Goa Shipyard. Based on this true story and as a mark of gratitude to the
unknown beggar, Star of Curtorim penned his most successful tiatr *‘Seza
Pai’*. With the help of late Nelson Alfonso, the tiatr was staged in every
nook and corner of Goa. The popularity of Seza Pai reached to such a height
that the tiatr loving people started calling Star of Curtorim ‘Seza Pai’.

After he retired from service he did not retire from the tiatr stage. He
started staging his old tiatrs. He also wrote two new tiatrs namely *‘Izmol’
* and *‘Maim Dukhi Sasumaim Sukhi’*. Both tiatrs were successful. Presently
he has written yet another tiatr *‘Bail Dukhi Kumar Sukhi’* which awaits
release.

For his valuable contribution to tiatr stage he has been felicitated by
various cultural and social organizations:-

   - He was felicitated by Kala Academy in 2008.
   - In 2009 Government of Goa bestowed upon him the prestigious Goa State
   Cultural Award 2009
   - Curtorim Jaycees Club also felicitated him in 2010.

All tiatr lovers are requested to attend the programme.

[Goanet] Church Dress Code

M’lore churches issue dress code

Stanley G Pinto TNN

Mangalore: Some churches in the Mangalore diocese have barred
worshippers from wearing sleeveless dresses, T-shirts with cheeky
messages and short skirts saying it would distract other worshippers.

Fr Victor Machado, parish priest, Bejai Church, said: “We expect
the devout who come to church to be dressed decently. It’s a place of
worship and not a party hall or place to display the latest fashion.
We expect worshippers not be distracted by others dressed immodestly.”

He added: “We see people take extra care to dress when they attend
a function. Why this disregard when they come to the house of God?”

His decision has been seconded by the parish council. Fr William
Menezes, PRO, Bishop’s House. The bishop of Mangalore diocese Rev
Aloysius Paul D’Souza also has been vocal about showing less skin in
the house of the Lord. “People come to pray. We expect Catholics to
not only be modest in dressing, but also in behaviour and lifestyle,”
said Menzes.

The dress code could go down well with the elderly but it could
alienate the younger flock, the very people churches around the world
are trying to keep on hallowed grounds, at least for Sunday masses.
“When our parents don’t object to our dresses, who is the clergy to
tell us?” questions collegian Neetha.

On Friday, Nov 18, the DGSC members joined together with more enthusiasm
and fanfare, on a much grander scale to celebrate the Goa Day.

This year DGSC gave more acting opportunity to younger talents. Many youths
