[Goanet] Matanhy and BJP

2012-02-15 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Dear Geraldo,

Matanhy is free to join any party and the electorate are free to vote
for whichever candidate they think will represent them best. However,
it must be borne in mind that certain parties are driven by
ideologies. One must check before supporting and voting for such
parties whether their ideology suits oneself. For example, the BJP
subscribes to the hindutva ideology which states and believes that the
Muslims and Christians should be deprived of all rights of a citizen.
They also believe that the hindu culture should be imposed on them.
The BJP governments in states like MP, Gujarat, Karnataka,
Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand have been systematically imposing their
hindutva programmes on the people. Laws have been enacted against
minorities like anti-conversion act, ban on cow slaughter and even
stringent punishments for eating meat. Text books have been changed to
brain wash children with their ideology. In Goa they have been
agitating against the grant of aid to English medium schools while
extending it to Marathi , Kannada and other language schools. If this
is what you wish for, so be it.

I am aware that the Congress has let people down with their corrupt
practices and wrong policies. However, the solution is not to jump
from the frying pan into the fire. I would suggest that you look at
other alternatives. Choose any candidate even an independent who is
clean, honest and with integrity and principles. If even 10 such good
candidates are elected it will make a difference. Many drops make an
ocean. If you are finally left with a choice of choosing between the
devil and the deep blue sea, choose the lesser evil. With corruption
you will survive at least. But with corruption and communalism, you
are done for. Refer to the latest issue of Frontline which link I am
giving below for a better understanding:

http://www.frontlineonnet.com/

Regards,

Marshall

Geraldo Oliveira

With little choice at the disposal of electorate at this crucial
election, which is 'make or break', and based on the current

scenario of candidates, one can easily conclude that a Parrikar
government with Matanhy in its ranks will be far better than any
Congress combination to govern Goa for the next 5 years.

[Goanet] candidates

2012-02-15 Thread Eugene Correia
The press release from the EC says 62 Congress candidates, 54 BJP
candidates... It is obvious that there are more Congressmen in some
constituencies than the official one. Ditto for BJP. I am not sure
if under the law a party can allow its non-official candidates to use
the official symbol or if the EC allows more than one candidate under
the same party and on the same symbol in one constituency.

[Goanet] Junior Rane

2012-02-15 Thread Peter Fernandes
The practice of family politics in Goa found strong endorsement from health
minister Vishwajit Rane, who stated that the 'family' aspirants are from
dominant political families and are efficient, educated and capable.
Mr Rane, if so why political efficient, educated people like you have greed
and destroyed the beauty and peace from Goa?
Families are not efficient and are not for developement of Goa but to loot
Goa. That why I tell all my brother and sisters in Goa
not to Vote and bring the same Goverment to power.

Re: [Goanet] Its Election time in Goa

2012-02-15 Thread floriano

Dear Vivian,

If our people (read concerned voters) did not salivate at the mention of a
free drink, a free lunch or the gift packets during or before elections, GOA
would not be in doldrums as it finds itself today.
I often repeat this incident which happened with me during my 2007 campaign
in Aldona. An ex-officer of the Indian Airlines had this to say when I asked
him to vote for me.
Every election I see that people get sarees, cooking utensils, sugar,
rice, cooking oil what not. But no body has given me anything at any time.
This time I shall vote for anyone who even gives me a plactic water bucket

To this, my prompt response was: TH TUJER

Incidentally, GRA-GSRP has two candidates in fray in these elections. Julius
Pereira in Aldona and Annabelle Pereira in Taleigao. (Not related)
The above two organizations do not allow it's canditates to spend from their
pockets. Julius' deposit of Rs. 10,000/- has been paid from the donations to
GRA and from the sale of GRA's Lottery tickets (draw in May, 2012 with a
racer 21 geared bike worth Rs. 11,000/- as third prize; Front loading LG
automatic washing machine worth Rs. 25,000/- as the second prize and Flat
screen LED 21 TV worth Rs. 36,000/- as the first prize). 30,000 coupons
have been printed, each worth Rs. 20/- and expect to raise about Rs. 5
lacs after deductions.

These donation coupons aka raffles are meant to finance the moderate
election expenses of the candidates. Books of 20 coupons each are
available and we appeal to conscious citizens of GOA to help us with these.

Just to let you know and hoping that you will contribute thro' sponsoring
any one of the prizes or under-writing the books of 20's.

With due appreciation of the above advisory.
Best regards
floriano

PS 1: The racer bike has been sponsored to the tune of 275 books by one of
our Kuwait Patrons who is currently in Goa and who wants to remain
annonymous.
PS 2: Another Kuwait Patron who is also in Goa for 'Valentine' is
contemplating the sponsor of any one of the other prizes and should finalize
within a couple of days.
PS3: Kuwait Goans seem to be more concerned for their Goa than the rest,
as another Kuwait Goan and his friends there are collecting a kitty to
sponsor one or other of the prizes.
PS4: It gives us a great satisfaction to know that there are Goans who
believe in our work for Goa and for the betterment of Goans. Cheers

Subject: [Goanet] Its Election time in Goa

At Christmas in the years 2010 and 2011, a gentleman claiming to be just a
do-gooder,
came by our residence witha bag full of goodies, which included Basmati
rice, coconuts,
jaggery, sugar etc. etc. I declined the gift each time, because I had a
suspician that it had to do with Buying votes even though in December 2010
elections were not on the horizon.
When I asked the generous gentleman, why the gift ? He responded that his
Trust was spreading good cheer, giving the goodies to those of the Hindu
faith at Ganesh Chathurti and Christians at Christmas. Since I believe that
there is no such thing as a free lunch, I
politely declined to accept his gift. My neighbors greedily accepted their
gifts.

14 months later we find that the do gooder bearing gifts is standing for
election, and today
with a large entourage he was gong door to door to ask people to vote for
him. He did not
come to my house. I told my neighbors in December 2010 to be careful, as
this person
was just softening them up to vote for him even though he was not known as a
politician at that time. Everything I told my neighbors has come true. Here
is a blatant attempt to buy
votes, though it happened long before the model code of conduct came into
effect.
Such is the state of affairs in Goa. In the press we hear about Police
Flying squad
searching cars for large sums of money or cases of liquor presumably to be
used to buy
votes. In Porvorim constituency alone there are 7 or 8 parties in the fray.
Wow ! So many
public spirited individuals seeking election so that they can serve the
polulace at large !

If one believes that, one needs to have their heads examined.

This is election - Goa style !

[Goanet] Vishwajit's wish

2012-02-15 Thread Eugene Correia
Vishwajit Rane said that he wishes to develop the Anjuna-Vagator
coastal area with tourism-related infrastructure. If he means setting
up new hotels, then he would be creating another Calangute.
Even the once-pristine beaches of Morjim and Palolem are now overrun
by structures, big and small, and they, along with coastal areas in
Bardez and Salcette provide enough scope for tourists.
Further concretization of the remaining coastal areas would be
detrimental to Goa's ecology. Making promises to Siolim voters is one
thing but to get the plans into action is another.
Will the voters in this constituency take Vishwajit's words at
face-value or just ignore as election promises?
Candidates are making all of of promises and giving all sort of
assurances. Only the gullible voters will be taken in by them.
Voters must check with what the elected candidates said during the
last election and how much they accomplished in their term as MLAs. If
they have accomplished even 50 per cent it is commendable.
Anjuna-Vagator came into global limelight in the 60s and if the
successive governments wanted to develop it in a bigger way they
should have done it instead of thinking of it now. The Anjuna-Vagator
belt has been overshadowed by other costal ares. If the tourist inflow
increase dramatically this year and next with no hotel rooms available
to meet the demands, then the incoming government can take a look at
exploring Anjuna-Vagator. Till then, let the area remain what it is,
underdeveloped and unburdened.

[Goanet] Hello Sir

2012-02-15 Thread Peter Fernandes
Ref:PRESS CONFERENCE OF SHANTARAM NAIK
Just a few lines.
I love my Goa because I was born in Goa, I once loved Congress Party
because it was a good party,
but past few years it is not the same and the faces which Congress
refielded are only to do
more and more corruption in Goa.
Why don't you have fielded some new faces and then passed remarks against
Parikkar?
For all these years what good did Congress do to Goa?
What did Congress do to solve the Garbage issue?
What did Congress do to solve the Mining Issue?
Congress is fully on the list of Corruption in Goa and nothing else.
Why do Congress go into corruption and make money, to save Congress
Party at centre? Shame upon all of you.
I am not a big guy like you, but still I tell my Goan brothers and sisters
not to Vote and bring the same Goverment to power.
We want to say AMEN to Congress Goverment.

Thanks,

[Goanet] The TN example

2012-02-15 Thread Eugene Correia
Tamil Nadu CM Vijaylalitha has begun her avengefuj ride by getting the
state's anti-corruption branch to read the former education minister
for amassing wealth disproportionate to his income.
Having suffered greatly under the DMK, the newly-elected AIDMK is now
teaching the members of her predecessaor government some tough
lessons.
She has already shed the weight of her aide, Sashikala, who was her
faithful friend for years on the belief that Sashikala was extorting
money from businessmen.
Coming back to power, Jaya is now in total command. She fears no one,
and cares a damn for her political opponents.
One may well ask how Jayalalitha herself came to own so much wealth?
In case Goa sees the coming to power of BJP will it also launch raids
on former Congress ministers and MLAs? The Monserrate case has got
wild publicity but there are other cases that have remained under
cover.
It is not shocking to read that more than 55 percent of the MLAs are
crorepatis and also to learn that since the Congress came into power
many of the ministers, including the CM, have shown a dramatic
increase in the net worth.
Babush Monserrate may be the sole victim for now but till he is
charge-sheeted and taken to court the case will remain on paper.

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India's temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-15 Thread marlon menezes
From: Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com

2. I went through the article in question. Nowhere does it point out
any flaw in the Hindu religion.  I quote from the article-

A devadasis who discovers a relationship with Christ becomes a
powerful witness in her community, according to one Christian worker.
These new lives in Christ become witnesses against the practice that
enslaved them and for the Savior who set them free.
---
The above statement implies that this prostitution/enslavement is part of the
Hindu practice while the path through christianity offers them salvation.
Conclusion: hinduism is inferior, christianity is superior. If Nasci had a
little more finesse in his writing ability, he would make a perfect reporter
for the CSF.

From: Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com

3. Further, Sandesh's response was against the Church and conversion
and not against the CSF as Santosh would like to mislead us. I quote
Sandesh 'in the end the motive of the Church is always to convert (as
always)...'. Unfortunately, the false propaganda unleashed by the
hindutva forces has taken root in the minds of ordinary people like
Sandesh. The word conversion has been somehow given a negative
meaning. Proselytising is done by all religions and even atheists. Has
anyone seen the Hare Rama, Hare Krishna worshippers. I have seen them
in Bombay, Poona, Delhi and even in Russia where they dance and pray
in public and distribute their literature. change.
--
I would agree with this. Bans on proselytizing as are currently in place in
India, are just another intrusion by the government into the lives of its
citizens. The right of constituents of one religion to propagate their favored
religion, and their right to demonize competitor religions (as this article
subtly does) should be sacrosanct. Religions, can often be equated to
commercial enterprises that are out to capture market share using various
marketing tools/propaganda at their disposal. If Tata can be allowed to compete
with Maruti, why should not christianty not be allowed to compete with
hinduism?  So long as violence is not used to espouse one's point of view, I
see no problem with it. Alternatively, there are many (the majority?) within
their respective religious communities that do not seek to impose their belief
system on their competitors and primarily undertake actions to benefit
society as a whole. It seems like the CSF is part of the
former category, but it is wrong for Sandesh to assume that the church as a
whole and presumably christians in general share that attitude.

instead they are busy trying to associate me with fundamentalist groups and
commenting on my english langauge.

As for me.. I have never said that Christian people make me feel
insecure... nor is the question of disbelief in Christian religion
-

I've been on this forum for about six years and this is the first time I've
come across Sandesh Anvekar's posts. For the first time to be an attack on the
Church does not bode well.

Sandesh, who professes to have a little more knowledge than a kindergarten
child, should know in Christianity the Church is synonymous with its religion.
It sees no distinction. Hence an attack on the Church is very similar to
unbridled criticism of Hindu Gods.

But criticizing each other's Gods and religions means nothing to me. Rama,
Jesus, Mohammed, Superman and Santa Claus are all same-same to me. What I find
subversive is the continuous and incessant propaganda machine which is
unleashed in India. First of all, the Church in India is least bothered about
converting people. Perhaps Sandesh can give us statistics on how many Hindus
have been converted in all of Bombay's leading colleges run by Christians.
Surely, a place of learning would be prime opportunity for influencing the
mind. Alas, more Hindus avail of Christian-run education then all of the
Christian world put together.

Secondly, if at all proselytizing does occur in India, it is likely to be by a
splinter evangelical-styled missionary group. But the point is, which Marshall
makes adequately, proselytizing isn't the same as forcing people to convert.
The term forced conversions implies that an organisation has political state
sanction whereby it can exert power. Christians of India have none. So if
people are converting that speaks to their desperation and desire to attain
some sort of salvation, whether spiritual or economic. But in a democracy, that
is an individual's choice and no one has the right to take away that choice.

Lastly, as to the point that I am over-reacting, I don't think so. To believe
that India is somehow a mature, functioning democracy in my opinion is a highly
optimistic point of view. We are anything but a secular, liberal society. We
are at best two shades lighter than conservative theocracies with ever
shrinking space in the domain of individual and collective freedoms.
Furthermore, it is naive to believe that only militant, extremist groups pose a
threat to India. The threat to Indian democracy in terms of its tolerance for
plurality will come from the vast burgeoning Hindu middle-class who for some
reason continue to feed on their own sense of victim-hood and genuinely believe
that they are under threat of some sort. My favourite line is, I'm not an RSS
or anything but I believe MF Hussein should be killed. (luckily he died before
it came to that, broken and in exile.)

Best,
selma

[Goanet] Bicholim no exception to caste politics

2012-02-15 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM: The caste factor has played a crucial role in the state ever
since assembly elections have been held here and the Bicholim constituency
is no exception.

The first election was held in 1963 and late Kusumakar Kadkade, a member of
the Bahujan Samaj, contesting on Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party ticket was
elected from Bicholim.
During the tenure of the first chief minister of Goa, late Dayanand
Bandodkar from 1963 to 1971, and later during Ms Shashikala Kakodkar’s
tenure as chief minister till 1979, the MGP was outrightly supported by the
Bahujan Samaj, the Marathas, the Bhandari community and other communities.
Late Dattaram Chopdekar (1967) and Ms Kakodkar of MGP who won in 1972 and
1977 from Bicholim belonged to the Bahujan Samaj.
The Bicholim town has Catholic and Muslim voters, who have always supported
the Congress party, and the rural areas of Bicholim constituency, which
include Advalpal, Latambarsem, Van-Mavlingem, Mencurem, Sal and Mulgaon, is
dominated by Hindu voters, who predominantly belong to the Maratha and
Bhandari communities.
There is also a presence of the Saraswat and Vaishya communities in the
Bicholim town.
In the 1980 elections, Mr Harish Zantye, a Saraswat, contested as an
independent candidate and won. The factors contributing to his victory were
negative voting against Ms Shashikala Kakodkar and Mr Zantye’s close
contacts with the Bahujan Samaj in the rural panchayat areas.
Mr Zantye won from Bicholim again in 1984, this time as a Congress
candidate, defeating Mr Vinayak Naik of the MGP, a Saraswat. Among two
Saraswat candidates Bahujan Samaj community had supported Mr Zantye. He had
maintained close contacts, not only with the rural people, but also with
the Catholic and Muslim communities.
It was a different story in 1989 election. Mr Pandurang Raut, a Maratha
candidate from Sal village contested from Bicholim constituency, and got
elected due to the strong support of the Maratha Samaj and opponents of Mr
Zantye from the Bicholim town.
He defeated his rivals Mr Zantye and Mr Rajanaikant Lawanis, both members
of Saraswat community. In 1994 elections, there was a triangular fight
between late Pandurang Bhatale of Congress, Mr Panadurnag Raut
(independent) and Mr Kalidas Parab of the MGP, all three from the Martha
community.
However, Bhatale, who contested as a Congress candidate was supported by Mr
Harish Zantye, and managed to get the support of the Saraswat and Vaishya
communities, became victorious.
Mr Ramnath Dessai, was the first BJP candidate to contest election from
Bicholim in 1989; Mr Dessai could secure only 221 votes.
In 1994, the BJP did not field its candidate from Bicholim constituency;
however, in 1999 elections, Mr Rajesh Patnekar of BJP contested from
Bicholim.
Even though he lost to Mr Pandurang Raut of MGP by a margin of only 90
votes, he was successful in spreading the BJP’s influence in rural areas.
Bahujan Samaj votes were divided; Mr Raut secured a sizable chunk of the
Catholic and Muslim votes, thereby securing victory.
In 2002 and 2007, Mr Rajesh Patnekar of BJP won in succession because of
the support of the Maratha and Bhandari communities and Hindu, Catholic and
Muslim votes from Bicholim town. Anti-Congress wave was also another factor
in this election.
In 2007, Mr Raut of MGP and Mr Sawal of Congress, both Maratha community
members only succeeded in dividing the votes thereby making it easy for Mr
Patnekar to become victorious.
In the forthcoming elections, the fight is likely among Mr Rajesh Patnekar
of Congress, Mr Naresh Sawal and Mr Pandurang Raut, both independent
candidates and Mr Manohar Shirodkar of BJP. That means a four-cornered
battle amongst two Marathas, one Vaishya and one Bahujan Samaj candidate is
expected. Though many factors are likely to influence the voters, the
caste factor will be one among them and will definitely reflect on the
political fortunes of the contesting candidates. (NT)

Re: [Goanet] Matanhy and BJP

2012-02-15 Thread Geraldo Oliveira
Dear Marshall,
I read your comments to my article on goanet and your fears as stated are
perfectly understandable.
Goans must throw the anti Goan and absolutely corrupt Congress Party out of
power, atleast for this term.  It is foolish argument that Corruption is a
lesser evil than Communalism because Corruption destroys the very heart and
soul of a society and affects everybody. Communalism can be dealt in Goa by
bringing about unity between both Hindu and the Christian communities.  More
Catholic representation in the BJP  will change the political compulsions and
bring about unity among Goans wich is very vital for our survival.
The real danger is the polarisation of the two major communities.  The
Christians are fast receding in numbers and if we don't unite now, Goans will
be outnumbered and wiped out like the east indians.   The corrupt Congress has
used the 'secular' card effectively to its advantage.  With  no love for the
BJP,  during the last BJP government  (which didnt last the full term), 11.8 %
jobs were given to the christian community whereas this secular Congress
Government led by Digambar Kamat with so many christian ministers, only 8.5%
jobs went to the Christian community.
Leaving aside Matanhy's achievements, his honesty and integrity are
unquestionable.  He is visionary and a lone crusader who has selflessly fought
for Goa's causes over the years.  I assure you Matanhy will have a voice where
ever he is, and the BJP in Goa will listen to him. If Goans have not recognised
Matanhy Saldanha, so be it, but definitely this man does not deserve to be
despised nor attacked.

years old controversial CD and  Good Friday issue,  than the most recent

Christian and Hindu communities, which till date remain polarised as a result
of years of Congress misrule.  While the Congress has plundered  and sold Goa,
it’s Party chief Sonia Gandhi has lied to the electorate at the last election
on Special status and now, has unleashed the same bunch of powerful thieves
along with their families to consolidate their territories for the final
assault on mother Goa.   On the other hand, the BJP has atleast acknowledged
mistakes of the past and with more representatives of the Catholic community
joining  its ranks, will have to  rethink  its attitude towards the minority

Matanhy  is a shrewd man  with a strong mind of his own,  capable of
influencing others towards his own vision for Goa.  Goa stands a much better
chance to bring about a Lokayukta and even Special Status under BJP   than
under any Congress Government  which is totally anti Goan. Our good friend
Rupert Coutinho has censured Matanhy, and with a long list of  questions, but
one can condone his ignorance of Matanhy’s achievements, both as an activist
and as a politician over the last 40 years. Just  to point out one example :
SEZ in Goa  was stopped  only when Matanhy gave an ultimatum to the Digamber
Kamat led  Government not so long ago.  It has always been Matanhy’s style not
to trumpet his achievements, but it is time to make known that Matanhy opposed
tooth and nail the idea of cancelation of Good Friday and many other policy
decisions when he was part of the BJP Government.    Mr. Coutinho being in UAE
is unaware that Matanhy has
joined the BJP on the advice of his supporters in Cortalim constituency which
itself speaks volumes of grassroot support and development in the area during
his tenure.  Anybody  can book Matanhy  for sins of omission, but not for
corruption and opportunism as alleged by Rupert Coutinho and if that was the
case, Matanhy could have easily joined the Congress years ago,

[Goanet] Was Churchill CM twice?

2012-02-15 Thread Eugene Correia
A report in the Hindustan Times said Churchill was seeking his third
stint as chief minister. I knew he was CM from March 27 to April 14,
1990. I googled and found that the IndianDemocracy.com website said he
held CM's position in 1919; 1992-44.
The report says he was twice eleted as MP, which is right, in 1996 and 2004.
Here's what Goanews says:

SEVENTH ASSEMBLY (1990 – 94 )

1. Pratapsing Rane : 9 January '90 to 27 March '90 (75 days)
2. Churchill Alemao : 27 March '90 to 14 April '90 (18 days)

4. Ravi Naik : 25 January '91 to 18 May '93 (2.4 yrs)
5. Dr Wilfred de Souza : 18 May '93 to 2 April '94 (11 months)
6. Ravi Naik : 2 April '94 to 8 April '94 (6 days)

[Goanet] Fwd: Keith Vaz's involvement in Goan party politics

2012-02-15 Thread delima francis

From: delima francis francis.del...@blueyonder.co.uk

Subject: Keith Vaz's involvement in Goan party politics
To: goa...@goanet.org

If Soter wants enlightenment to his recent post as to why t is wrong for an
MP from another country to intervene actively in the party politics of
Goa, may I suggest the following consideration:

If the reports on Goanet are correct and Keith Vaz has taken or is taking
an active part in party politics in Goa then I believe such involvement to
be inappropriate if not entirely improper.

Mr Vaz is a British national, a Member of the British Parliament and,
indeed, the Chairman of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee.
Accordingly, the latter Parliament and Committee - and very particularly
his constituents in Leicester - ought to be his primary focus and
should consume his total public energies, efforts and commitments. So, if
the reports are correct, what on earth is he doing actively campaigning on
behalf of a particular political party or candidate in Goa?

As a Goan, Mr Vaz is understandably interested in his heritage and the old
country and may well have views on Goan affairs but given his commitments
back home (the UK) for which he is very handsomely paid and from which he
derives extensive parliamentary privilleges, I believe that he ought to
desist from active participation in Goan domestic politics.

Of course, he has the option open to him to up roots in the UK and take up
permanent residence in Goa!

[Goanet] A letter to Keith Vaz from GOA with LOVE

2012-02-15 Thread floriano

Dear Keith Vaz,

Do not give 'ear' to this sentimental crap from Goans who
themselves have left Goa high and dry to suck up to the Canadian Reds and
the Reds everywhere in the world.

I believe that you are doing the right thing.
Birds of same feathers must flock together.
Otherwise everything falls flat and there is no looter's 'community' left.

Once again, very well done, Sir..
You have rightly realized that Goa's future lies with the 'Alemaos'.
With you on their side, who can stop them?.

Your comrade in the British parliament, eons ago, who sported the same name
that you now are seen hanging around your neck, was a bloody fool, when he
had told Clement Atlee this, in 1947.
Quote Mr. Atlee, you must understand that
you will be handing the reins of hungry millions in the hands of men of
straw, freebooters and looters, where a day will come when even fresh air
will not be

free to breath.
Unquote

The bloody fool that he was, In'it??.
'Men of straw', huh?

Would he have known at that time that the Indian Farmers would commit mass
suicides and that the imported grain at heavy costs to the exchequer would
rot in the go-downs where even the rodents would not eat them and people who
must eat them die of hunger??

Would he have known at that time that his own name sake would be the
champion of Goa's dynastic rule of freebooters and looters?
And would he have known that a member of his own 'house', one day be
sucking up to this Goa's Champion to make the august British Parliament a
scene of ridicule?

[Goanet] Cure that Persistent Cold

2012-02-15 Thread Dan Driscoll
My good neighbor John Eric has a cold that 'just won't go away'.
Coincidentally, I have one too; I guess it's just 'something going around'.

But lately I've been giving some metaphysical-genre thinking about this
matter---of 'PERSISTENT COLDS'. While taking 'an expectorant' (Homeopathic
syrup available in India under trade-name 'Stodal'; no lurking,
liver-wasting Paracetamol!) I recollect about my 'deep-breathing phase' when
I was @ 'OCE' (Ontario Colllege of Education) in Canada half-a-century ago.
I learned then (but later forgot) that 'OXYGEN IS THE BEST MEDICINE'.

About a week back I began to stand out on my Goa 'balcon' @ 6 in the
morning, for a customized version of SURYA NAMASKAR. Our latest Indian
'sadguru' (that mad fellow from Coimbatore who whizzes up-hill-and-down-dale
on his 'Harley') says that in addition to listening for messages from outer
space we should even now become aware that we are ALREADY receiving messages
from INNER SPACE. I think he may be making a significant point there.

We really don't have to 'LEARN' how to do deep-breathing or verandha-rail
'asanas'. Just stand out quietly---and let 'inner-space' take over. Your
inner self will tell you what is to be done; when to raise the arms, and
keep them up there for a few moments---pressed to the verandha
sloped-ceiling which seems purpose-built for just this activity. The Isha
Sadguru says, While inhaling be reminded that YOU ARE NOT THE BODY; and
on exhaling, YOU ARE NOT EVEN THE MIND. Interesting thought, that; still
working on it! With some work experience with in film animation I'm even
tempted to think that those rock-cave sculptor ancestors of ours, who
created multi-armed gods and goddesses, were showing us yoga arm
movements---deep-frozen in stone, for our consumption centuries later.

Half an hour of this in the early morning (before the neighbors can monitor
your shenanigans) may do more than any medicine to clear away
phlem/mucous/sputum ---whatever is that guckey stuff is that coats bronchial
tubes and blocks air passages---and just keeps on building up! The
'persistent cough' and 'cold', that 'just won't go away' like John Eric's
and mine, may be the body's way of signalling ENOUGH ALREADY---start
breathing, lazybones!

Away with the anti-biotic; oxygen is the best medicine; and the only way to
get it is to breath---CONSCIOUSLY

George Menezes will dispell all his halucinations about the BJP wanting
Unity with the Indian Christian world. Ha Ha, once again.

FL: There is a typo error here. It should read 'selfishly'

GO: I assure you Matanhy will have a voice where ever he is, and the BJP in
Goa will listen to him
FL: Like they listened to him over the CD and the Good Friday affair. Ha Ha.
On this account I have said umpteen times that people of Cortalim had sent a
ferocious Alsation Dog to the Goa legislative Assembly with hopes that this
dog could rock the place with his resounding barks. But the ferocious dog
turned out to be the BJP 'ear' licking poodle. Ha Ha again.

GO: If Goans have not recognised Matanhy Saldanha.
FL: The Nagpur based RSS has??? Is this what GO means to say?? If that is
so, then I agree with him one hundred per cent.

GO: It is true that, Matanhy joining the BJP has sent shivers in the

FL: Geraldo must not rush to pat his own back for this opinion. Shivers in
the Congress? It is more like 'Jiving' as it looks to me. The Congress camp
cannot stop jiving to see Matanhy having cut his own feet with this move,
especially Congress' Mauvin Godinho..

GO: On the other hand, the BJP has atleast acknowledged mistakes of the past

FL: Matanhy will embrace nothing. He will be just used by the RSS ( read
Manohar Parrikar) and when the time comes, he will be dumped like a soiled
piece of rag. As I have said earlier, Matanhy has cut his own feet in a
hurry by basically being SELFISH and wanting to get to places faster than
warranted just like the old fox from Saligao..

GO:Mr. Coutinho being in UAE is unaware that Matanhy has
joined the BJP on the advice of his supporters in Cortalim constituency
which itself speaks volumes of grassroot support and development in the area
during his tenure
FL: Geraldo must give some credit to Rupert Coutinho's intelligence. No born
leader follows the followers. On the Contrary, the followers must follow
the LEADER. We shall see if Matanhy succeeds in painting Cortalim saffron or
gets thrown into the Zuari River. Hope he knows how to swim. :-)

GO: One can easily conclude that a Parrikar government with Matanhy in its
ranks will be far better than any Congress combination to govern Goa for the
next 5 years
FL: It makes me pity the high intelligence of Geraldo come to naught on this
one. He must see through Congress as well as the BJP and focus on something
different at a distant. If not Congress, then BJP and vice versa has turned
intelligent Goans into BUFFOONS for far too long. And now the Bengali
'tricumtel' is vying for a place in between the Congress and the BJP

BTW: That Matanhy never had the qualities of a LEADER was known to yours
faithfully the day I met him for the very first time during his fasting
across from the Panjim's Ferry Wharf at the time of the Meta Strip
agitation. This was confirmed a few days later when he was canned along with
others in the Panjim's Police Headquarter's jail. And finally it was
reconfirmed when he gave a clean chit to Meta Strips when he became the
Minister for Tourism in the Manohar Parrikar Cabinet. Does Geraldo want to
hear more??? If not, he should stop pissing in his pants over Matanhy's so
called achievements. And if he should think that I am the usual Goan Crab
who wants to pull Matanhy down, he better have a second thought because I
know very well, what ticks Matanhy Saldanha. Geraldo must watch Matanhy's
eyes when he is talked to. Leaders have piercing eyes when confronted. They
do not look away. Cheers.

The report says he was twice eleted as MP, which is right, in 1996 and 2004.
Here's what Goanews says:

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India's temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-15 Thread Santosh Helekar
I understand the position of Marshall Mendonza. Marshall is not a devout Hindu.
He is a devout Christian propagandist. Therefore, he is not expected to
understand what a devout Hindu apologist like Sandesh Anvekar would perceive as
offensive or hateful to his own religion. Marlon has nicely illustrated the
quote from the so-called Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF) that a devout
Hindu might regard as anti-Hindu. Here is what Marlon said:

QUOTE

The above statement implies that this prostitution/enslavement is part of the
Hindu practice while the path through christianity offers them salvation.

Conclusion: hinduism is inferior, christianity is superior. If Nasci had a
little more finesse in his writing ability, he would make a perfect reporter
for the CSF.
UNQUOTE
Marlon Menezes

It is very easy to demonstrate that the CSF is not a secular forum, and that it
is, as I have stated, a Catholic propaganda outfit as much as the Hindu
Janajagruti Samiti is a Hindu propaganda outfit. Indeed, ironically Marshall
himself has provided evidence for this fact in his following quote:

QUOTE
The worst that can be said about the CSF is that sometimes it goes overboard
and tends to over-react to minor and inconsequential issues like that of
calling for a ban on the Da Vince Code movie or more recently A R Rahman's song
which contains the word 'Hosanna.

UNQUOTE
.Marshall Mendonza

No secular organization would ever choose to impose its will on the people in
general on self-serving parochial religious grounds, in violation of a
fundamental constitutional right to free speech, by calling for a ban of a
movie. Please note that the general secretary of CSF, Joseph Dias publicly
issued the following threat of possible violence if Da Vinci Code was not
banned:

QUOTE

You can't make fiction on a religious figure. Tempers are already running quite
high and there's no way of saying what could happen if the movie is released
UNQUOTE

..Joseph Dias, General Secretary of CSF

Please see: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4759111.stm

A former corporator of Mumbai named Nicholas Almeida who along with the CSF has
led the protest march for banning movies that the CSF finds offensive,
announced a dead or alive bounty of 11 lakhs for the head of Dan Brown, the
author of the Da Vinci book.

Please see: http://www.mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=localnewsid=28317

As far as anti-secular hatred on other fronts is concerned, the CSF has also
joined the hate-filled homophobia campaign by providing links to bogus
propaganda articles claiming that homosexuality is linked to the crime of
pedophilia.

Please see: http://persecutedchurch.info/2011/04/14/national-campaigns/

Finally, I would like to point out that as a religious propagandist, Marshall
Mendonza might have a lot in common with Sandesh Anvekar. He mixes his religion
with politics, selectively reports news items on the propaganda websites of his
religion, and lashes out against anybody whom he perceives as being, or saying
anything, contrary to his religio-political views. The selective bias is also
evident from the fact that he is not sensitive to hatred, abuse or derision
when it is directed at other religions and other communities, unless there is
some political significance in it for him. He cannot appreciate the fact that
the Devadasi issue, cherry-picked by the CSF, ignoring the much broader
world-wide problem of prostitution, referred to by Noronha, as well as the
incoherent boorish anti-Hindu rants of Nascimento and Floriano, might be
insulting to a devout Hindu apologist such as Sandesh.

Cheers,

Santosh

 Response:

1.As usual Santosh tends to exaggerate, mislead and obfuscate issues.
In no way can the CSF be compared or equated with the HJS. I have yet
to see one provocative article inciting hate or violence against any
religion. Neither have I come across any hate literature or propaganda
espoused by it like the HJS.  If Santosh has come across any, I would
request him to provide the links. The worst that can be said about the
CSF is that sometimes it goes overboard and tends to over-react to
minor and inconsequential issues like that of  calling for a ban on
the Da Vince Code movie or more recently A R Rahman's song which
contains the word 'Hosanna. It has been playing an exemplary role in
highlighting acts of hate and violence against the Christian community
which generally go unnoticed in the secular media. Unlike the CSF, the
HJS/ SS has been involved in terrorist activities and is currently
being considered for being banned by the security forces and
 government.

 2. I went through the article in question. Nowhere does it point out
any flaw in the Hindu religion. In fact, it offers hope to those whom
society has cast away. For those conversant or familiar with the
Bible, there is the living example of Mary

[Goanet] TAG: Book Release: 'Lokam Khell', 'Mummy, Mhaka Tuje Vengent Dhor' 'Oxem Ghoddlem'

2012-02-15 Thread Tiatr Academy Goa

TAG’s Release of Books

Tiatr Academy Goa has published 3 books on three different topics
related to tiatr. These books will be released at the hands of Rev. Fr.
Manuel Gomes, Director, Diocesan Center for Biblical Apostolate on 16th
February 2012 at 4:45 pm at the Conference Hall of Tiatr Academy Goa,
Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim.

Invite:http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/6881476101/in/photostream

The three books to be released are ‘Oxem Ghoddlem’, ‘Lokam Khell’ and
‘Mummy, Mhaka Tuje Vengent Dhor’. The book ‘Oxem Ghoddlem’ written by
Daniel F. de Souza highlights important and serious as well as funny
incidents in the lives of tiatr artistes. Mr. de Souza has narrated
numerous incidents in the lives of 31 tiatr artistes which are still on
the tiatr stage.

‘Lokam Khell’ is a traditional folk play in Konkani which is also known
as Zomnivoilo- Khell. Written by Vitorino Pereira, ‘Lokam Khell’ gives
the true picture of the Konkani folk plays that were staged in the past.

‘Mummy, Mhaka Tuje Vengent Dhor’ is a script of a popular tiatr written
and directed by Albert Leo de Souza. The theme of the play dwells around
upbringing of children in modern families.

‘Oxem Ghoddlem’ is published under the TAG’s scheme Documentation of
Tiatr through Research Work while ‘Lokam Khell’ and ‘Mummy, Mhaka Tuje
Vengent Dhor’ are published under the scheme Preservation of Tiatr

[Goanet] Art Exhibition: DIFFERENT (Curtorim, Goa)

2012-02-15 Thread Goanet A-C-E!
DIFFERENT, 'An art exhibition with a difference' was inaugurated on the
Feb 11, 2012 at Arco Iris, Curtorim and shall remain open to the public
daily until Feb 17, 2012 (10am-8pm).

There are over 40 paintings of different genres, styles, mediums and
colours. The exhibition brings together under one beautiful Goan roof,
portraits, modernism, surrealism, impressionism and abstracts. One will
not only find a contrast of colours, but also contrasts of works and
styles. 'DIFFERENT' is an effort to have something for everyone who
walks in as different people have different tastes.

The most fascinating paintings that will grab your attention are the
ones painted by Alex Rodrigues who paints with his bare fingers and
nails. This talented Mumbai based artist of Goan origin is globally
known as a finger painter and has had his exhibitions in Europe and
other countries. There is a huge collection of his finger painted
Christs which would certainly make you wonder how could someone paint it
without a brush. The other artists who have displayed their artwork are
Liberetta Rodrigues, Deepak Bellary, Mona Astha, Nikkita Jain, Sunil
Pawle and Meena. If you are an art lover, this exhibition is a must visit.

Re: [Goanet] Mathany and BJP

2012-02-15 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Am still trying to find your quote Senor Parrikar on the 'green'
community' as it is very pertinent in the current election
'discussion'. Kindly do share. Maybe it will sink in the second-time
around.

My observation is one cannot give an accurate account on life in Goa
amidst free-flowing garbage if you wake up with the tavern-owners and
tiatrists (these f*ks who still sing of sobit amchi Gova). None of
these {are they blind?) have woken in time to take a bus ride from
Titan (majority on this g-net would not know where that is) to Vascu.
The bus ride would be a real eye-opener for a change and if you hear a
word of your beloved Concani (while on the bus), you should faint.
Really, f*k the drama. Ones heart bleeds when you see some unknowing
Goichi getting on the bus and trying to converse in Concani, they know
no other language! And one reads on the g-net about the conviction of
some retarded f*cks wants to save Goa ya? Huh?

The 'greening' of Goa has reached a point of no return and what you
said in your post is right there for all to see. Nothing against any
community but a mass influx is unhealthy. Starting with the minarets
of Titan (their plans or have already acquired the land stretching
from Titan to that cop-a factory). Then there is the slum, which has
slowly turning green, as a vote bank for a certain 'politician'. That
is were the m*drasa is and if you pass by on any weekend, the cement
and paint is still wet, thank you election time.

Note for the real-estte inv^stors: going price for a casa-in-the
slum, 1500k + rupiya!!!

Then on to the port town.which brings the ambiance of M*hammed
A^li road (in Mumbai)if you ever opened your eyes to goings on in
'green gettos', everything contrary to what any civil society would
want, from crime, to little bands of crooks. One could go on but why
bother.

Last week, a 'green' festival march/parade in Vascu gave an accuracate
estimate to locals how the demographic has changed and is changing. If
you heard the demands on local tvee last night, they want 4 reserved
seatsthe gao of Murm, Santa Cruz-Chimbel, Ponda and Fatorda (they
already have). Earlier, 'they' wanted Navelim. Am a little in shock
hearing that. But thats is the way it isto invade, multiply and
wreck...or is it hatching, matching and dispatching?

To clarify again, this is not against any religious groups nor do I
belong to a religious group.

[Goanet] Matanhy and BJP

2012-02-15 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Dear Geraldo

I cannot but agree with you that the Congress in Goa has proved itself
to be corrupt and incompetant. But then the BJP's track record in
states where it governs is no better. Please refer to reports on
Karnataka, MP, Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Uttarakhand, Punjab. Corruption
combined with communalism can be deadly and potent.

The BJP cadre have been brought up on a daily diet of anti-minoritism.
This cannot be wished away overnight. It reflected itself in many ways
during the BJP's first term in office. That was only a sneak preview.
Let them have a free hand and you will soon experience what they can
do as those in BJP ruled states are experiencing now. To imagine that
the BJP will bring about communal harmony is to indulge in
day-dreaming. A Leopard cannot change its spots. If you need a reality
check, please refer once again to the latest issue of Frontline, which
link I posted last time.

I am afraid I cannot agree with you with on the choice Matanhy has
made.He would have been better off as an Independent where he could
control his decisions and actions. If elected as a BJP legislator, he
would be bound by the manifesto, ideology and whips issued by the
party or lose his seat. In fact during his first term he was a silent
spectator to the rash of communal actions taken by the Parrikar
government. And do not forget, Babush cut his teeth under Parrikar. As
Town Country Planning Minister he set the ground for uncontrolled
concretisation of Goa. The creation of SEZ too began under Parrikar.
So was Micky Pacheco a minister under Parrikar.

The alternative is not to jump from the frying pan into the fire in a
knee-jerk reaction. Look for good candidates and support them
whole-heartedly. They do not need your money. They need your votes.
Even if about 10 good candidates, whether independents or from smaller
parties, are elected, it will make a difference. Small drops make an
ocean. It will have arrested the decline. And the future will offer
more hope.

At the end of the day the people of Goa have to take responsibility
for the kind of government they elect. It is no use crying later.
Democracy is not just about casting one's vote but to think, analyse
and decide which candidate and party will provide good, clean,
efficient and fair governance.

Regards,

Marshall

 Dear Marshall,
I read your comments to my article on goanet and your fears as stated are
 perfectly understandable.
Goans must throw the anti Goan and absolutely corrupt Congress Party out of
power, atleast for this term. It is foolish argument that Corruption is a
lesser evil than Communalism because Corruption destroys the very heart and
soul of a society and affects everybody. Communalism can be dealt in Goa by
bringing about unity between both Hindu and the Christian communities. More
Catholic representation in the BJP will change the political compulsions
and bring about unity among Goans wich is very vital for our survival.
The real danger is the polarisation of the two major communities. The
Christians are fast receding in numbers and if we don't unite now, Goans
will be outnumbered and wiped out like the east indians. The corrupt
Congress has used the 'secular' card effectively to its advantage. With no
love for the BJP, during the last BJP government (which didnt last the
full term), 11.8 % jobs were given to the christian community whereas this
secular Congress Government led by Digambar Kamat with so many christian
ministers, only 8.5% jobs went to the Christian community.
Leaving aside Matanhy's achievements, his honesty and integrity are
unquestionable. He is visionary and a lone crusader who has selflessly
fought for Goa's causes over the years. I assure you Matanhy will have a
voice where ever he is, and the BJP in Goa will listen to him. If Goans have
not recognised Matanhy Saldanha, so be it, but definitely this man does not
deserve to be despised nor attacked.
 Mog assom,

[Goanet] Anti Nuclear Agitation - Talk and Presentation by Angela Alvares

2012-02-15 Thread Goanet Events

LITERATI INVITES YOU ON FRIDAY 17TH FEB 2012 AT 7 p.m.

TO A SLIDE PRESENTATION AND TALK BY ANGELA ALVARES

ON THE ANTI NUCLEAR AGITATION IN INDIA

Angela Alvares, a 60 year old musician, is part of the massive
anti-nuclear agitation that refuses to allow the Koodankulam nuclear
reactors to be commissioned. The agitation emerged after the Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear disaster in March 2011.

Angela now moves around Tamil Nadu with a slide presentation of her own
making, introducing people to new and emerging technologies that make
reliance on nuclear power obsolete. Her talk also focuses on the
problems associated with nuclear energy and why more people should join
the agitations against nuclear power at Koodankulam and Jaitapur.

Goa today is sandwiched between the nuclear complex at Kaiga and the
approved complex at Jaitapur. Suddenly our future is being married to
the prospect of living under the permanent possibility of a major
nuclear accident that will require the evacuation of the entire State.

Angela studied two years at San Diego Community College in the US and
graduated with an Associates Degree in Music in l986. She graduated with
a Bachelor’s in French Literature at UCSD La Jolla, San Diego, at John
Muir College in 1989.

She put together her own Album “Only in America” of original music and
songs. She was a jazz performer at fine dining restaurants for a few
years in Nevada City and Grass valley, California.

She returned to India in 1994. She lived in Goa from 1994-2005 when she
performed her jazz routine at Goan resorts. She moved to Coonoor in the
Nilgiri Hills in 2006 but remains active as ever.

Welcome to a power-packed introduction to the problems that nuclear
power is already causing to our lives.

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India’s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-15 Thread Santosh Helekar
The reason the post below and the previous one by Selma are an unjustified
overreaction is because it gratuitously generalizes and assigns a deeper
meaning to an angry reaction of a Hindu Goanetter in response to a religious
provocation against his religion from a Catholic weblink provided in this
forum. To jump from any such random impulsive remark to the conclusion that
India is close to being a theocracy rather than a functioning democracy would
be tantamount to concluding that Goan Catholics in general are anti-Hindu and
anti-Indian bigots because of the repeated oafish outbursts that appear on
Goanet from the likes of Nascimento, Floriano and Bernado. Most Indians, middle
class or otherwise, are not right wing religious zealots. They do not support a
theocratic state. They hold diverse views, and make free and independent-minded
choices in elections. India is a successful, albeit messy, secular democracy,
and will continue to be so, irrespective of
which party comes to power. It is however more likely to always elect a party
that upholds pluralism and secularism. Moreover, its democratic institutions
such as the press and the Supreme Court will never abandon these principles.
Here is a nice BBC article on the enduring democracy in India, and what it
means to the rest of the world, and why it will always thrive:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6943598.stm

Here is a quote from it as to why there is no threat to India's democracy.

QUOTE
The only foreseeable threat to India's democratic future is the possibility
that a political party like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might ride a wave
of majoritarian sentiment to become the default party of government. This would
threaten India's carefully built pluralist democracy because the BJP, despite
its nativist rhetoric, ironically favours a European nationalist idiom, where
the nation is home to a majority people.

In India's case, this would be the Hindus. If the BJP and its ideological
preferences become entrenched in the Indian state, the ethnic violence that has
torn Sri Lanka apart could be replicated on a sub-continental scale.

That is unlikely to happen. A BJP-led coalition governed India for an entire
parliamentary term and failed to make the demographic majority of Hindus a
political reality. The republic's statutes and the rulings of their authorised
interpreter, the Supreme Court, make it nearly impossible for political parties
to fundamentally alter the basic structure of the constitution.

Besides, the diversity of the electorate forces India's ruling coalitions into
such complex electoral arithmetic that the pluralism so crucial to the
Republic's well-being is safe for the foreseeable future.
UNQUOTE

Cheers,

Santosh

 From: Carvalho elisabeth_...@yahoo.com

I've been on this forum for about six years and this is the first time
I've come across Sandesh Anvekar's posts. For the first time to be an
attack on the Church does not bode well.

Sandesh, who professes to have a little more knowledge than a kindergarten
child, should know in Christianity the Church is synonymous with its
 religion.
It sees no distinction. Hence an attack on the Church is very similar to
 unbridled criticism of Hindu Gods.

...

Lastly, as to the point that I am over-reacting, I don't think so. To
believe that India is somehow a mature, functioning democracy in my opinion
 is a
highly optimistic point of view. We are anything but a secular, liberal
 society.
We are at best two shades lighter than conservative theocracies with ever
shrinking space in the domain of individual and collective freedoms.
Furthermore, it is naive to believe that only militant, extremist groups pose
 a
threat to India. The threat to Indian democracy in terms of its tolerance for
plurality will come from the vast burgeoning Hindu middle-class who for some
reason continue to feed on their own sense of victim-hood and genuinely
 believe
that they are under threat of some sort. My favourite line is, I'm not
an RSS or anything but I believe MF Hussein should be killed. (luckily he
died before it came to that, broken and in exile.)

 Best,
 selma

Re: [Goanet] Matanhy and BJP

2012-02-15 Thread J. Colaco jc
1: Geraldo Oliviera: Matanhy has joined the BJP on the advice of his
supporters in Cortalim constituency

2: Floriano Lobo: No born leader follows the followers. On the Contrary,
the followers must follow the LEADER.

JC Response:

[A] I sincerely hope Matanhy or his lackey will clarify the following:

a: the number of individuals from Cortalim constituency who advised Matanhy
to join the BJP

b: how he knew (for sure) that they were his supporters before he joined
the BJP . and not BJP supporters. Personally speaking, I am very happy
that Matanhy finally came out of the closet and joined the BJP.

[B] I also wish to disagree with a few notions put out here:
c: that, in a democracy, the janta must follow the leader; that they follow
him/her after voting for him/her ... is another matter.
d: that anyone is 'born a leader'; though I know for sure that every
person, is born digambara. U! (;-)

[Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India's temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-15 Thread Marshall Mendonza
As a sangh parivar (hindutva) apologist/sympathiser, Santosh's
response was on expected lines. One can let one's imagination run riot
and come to as many conclusions as one desires.Helping women in
distress come out of prostitution can in no way be said to constitute
anti-hindu sentiments as Santosh would like to mislead us and give a
communal flavour.

Deliberately trying to misrepresent Sandesh's missive against the
Church, is a deliberate ploy to mislead and obfuscate issues which can
be pinned down. A lesson well learnt and imbibed from the headquarters
in Nagpur.

So far as his remarks against CSF is concerned, every individual or
organisation is free to protest peacefully or voice their grievances.
I challenge Santosh to provide one incident of violence in which CSF
showed its protests. Smearing and tarnishing the images and
reputations of individuals and organisations which work for minorities
and the downtrodden is a standard ploy used by the sangh parivar and
which Santosh demonstrates in good measure. Santosh keeps comparing
the CSF with the HJS/SS but is unable to provide even a single
incident of hate or violence but will keep on making insidious
insinuations.

It is my view that we see communal reactions like that of Sandesh and
Santosh and others is due to the fact that we have not been exposed
enough to the religious texts, practices and traditions of other
religions. Had we been so, this particular report would not have
attracted the kind of response that we saw.

Regards,

Marshall

[Goanet] Intruz brings colour to the lives of Dongorim's Hindus

2012-02-15 Thread Goanet News Service

Intruz brings colour to the lives of Dongorim's Hindus
TNN | Feb 16, 2012, 05.37AM IST

PANAJI: Dongorim etymologically means village situated on a hillock.
Dongorim, a hamlet of the village of Mandur, situated 11km from Bambolim
in Tiswadi taluka, celebrates Intruz from February 10 to February 16.
The festival includes folk dances, recitation of folk songs to the beats
of folk musical instruments by communities associated with agriculture,
fishing and several other activities.

Intruz, a Christian version of Shigmo is celebrated mostly by the
Christian gawdas, three days prior to the Lenten season. The Christian
communities living in Tiswadi, Bardez, and Salcete who were originally
converted from Hinduism during the Portuguese rule, found it difficult
to break their links with the Shigmo festival and they began the
tradition of singing and dancing on the beats of percussion instruments
like the ghumat, dhol, taso etc.

Dongorim, a pre-dominantly Hindu hamlet that worships the deity, Shasti
Shantadurga, is the only village that has Hindus celebrating Intruz.
During the Portuguese rule, they were prohibited from celebrating
traditional fairs and festivals. They would then obtain permission from
the government to celebrate Intruz.

During the 11th month of the Hindu calendar Magh on the third Friday at
the stroke of midnight, villagers begin the procession of fatyasuvari,
where some of them cover their bodies with woollen carpets with music
playing in the background.

On the second day, a well-decorated umbrella with crossandra flowers is
taken from house-to-house in a procession, which is welcomed by every
family by invoking Ravalnath, Satimaya, Sakhalyo, Golibaba. This
procession continues on the third day. On the fourth day, the deity is
put in to a lalakhi and is carried by devotees on their shoulders. The
fifth day attracts a large crowd of devotes to Dongorim. The troupes of
folk artistes with varied percussion instruments visit every house.

Relatives and friends who attend the festival are welcomed with a
special dish made from local vermicelli called shirvalyo and coconut juice.

The Intruz festival in Dongorim concludes on a Wednesday every year,
with the villagers sprinkling colours on each other by dancing to the
tunes of percussion instruments by forgetting their caste and tribal
differences. Ramrao Wagh, a native of Dongorim who teaches MCA at the
Goa University and has been a part of Intruz since his childhood, says,
Intruz is a replica of the Shigmo festival, which has provided a forum
for many generations in Dongorim to exhibit their talent and skill in
folklore.
