[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 5th Sunday of Lent

2012-03-19 Thread Jude Botelho
18-Mar-2012

Dear Friend,

No one likes the thought of suffering and we do not like to face death, though
we know we will die one day. Yet, without death there is no new life. We see
this happening in nature as well. In winter nature seems to be dying, trees are
leafless and all that we see are bare branches and yet from these dead branches
new life springs forth. Death gives way to life. With God's help may we
experience new life through the many moments of pain and death! Have a
life-giving God experience! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Fifth Sunday of Lent Progress, growth towards God has a
price tag! 25-Mar-2012
Readings: Jeremiah 31: 31-34Hebrews 5: 7-9John 12: 20-23

In the first reading the prophet Jeremiah sounds a note of hope. To the people
in exile he reveals God's promise - I will make a new covenant with the house
of Israel. I will be their God and they shall be my people. I will forgive
their iniquity and never call their sin to mind. Today's passage provides
comfort to the people in the midst of his gloomy predictions. The salvation
history of the chosen people was a long list of broken promises. But God had
made a covenant through Moses and had given them the Law as a sign of that
covenant. But now the law instead of being a sign of life was a series of
strict rules, which did not necessarily have any relationship with God. The
comforting part was the fact that Yahweh was going to make a New Covenant in
the new and final age of salvation.

God's Spiritual Big Bang
Many scientists subscribe to the big bang theory to explain the origin of the
universe. Some fifteen or twenty billion years ago, they theorize, all matter
and energy of the universe were concentrated into a space smaller than the head
of a pin. When the density became intolerably intense, there was an explosion
which propelled matter into a constantly expanding space. Leaving aside any
judgement about the correctness of this theory within the providence of God,
the truth is that there was a spiritual big bang less than two thousand years
ago. All of God's love was concentrated in a single action. His love was so
intense that it exploded with such force that it was propelled outward in a
great sphere, moving not only forward but even backward in time. That action
was the death and resurrection of God's Son. God's big bang is not a theory. It
is a profound reality which we call the Paschal Mystery.
Charles Miller in 'Sunday Preaching'

In today's Gospel we are told that a small group of Greeks came to John and
expressed their desire to meet Jesus personally. They wanted to see Jesus, to
enquire perhaps if they could become his disciples. Andrew knew that no one who
desired to meet Jesus would be a bother and so they approached him. Jesus
begins by stating that Now the hour has come for the son of Man to be
glorified. Earlier at Cana he had said to his mother: My hour has not yet
come. Later he had said that an hour is coming. But now he openly stated
that hour had come for the son of man to be glorified. Jesus' message here is
the same as the message in all of Lent, the way to glory for Jesus and for all
of us, is death to self. Only through death would come resurrection. Jesus
reminded his listeners that this was the law of life, the law of nature itself:
unless the seed dies and is buried in the ground, it cannot bear fruit. It is
when we are prepared to die that our lives
become fruitful beyond measure. Jesus also reminds his followers that his way
of thinking and living was in sharp contrast with what society believes as the
norm. The image we have of a successful person is one who has all the things of
life in abundance and more than the person needs. Jesus challenges such a way
of living. Anyone who loves his life will lose it; anyone who hates his life
in this world will keep it for eternal life. Spelling out his form of
discipleship he states: If anyone serves me he must follow me, wherever I am,
my servant will be there too. It is not enough to be Jesus fans, admiring what
he has done for us, we become his followers when we try to live like him and
for him. For Jesus the hour of being lifted up on the cross was also the hour
of being lifted up in glory. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall
draw all men to my self. All who share in being lifted up on their crosses
will also be lifted up in glory in
 and through Him.

The Seed that Dies Grows
As spring slips by, it is fascinating to watch where daffodils grow. Often it
is in some unlikely corner which a few weeks ago looked barren and neglected.
Yet in that spot, despite appearances, the daffodil bulbs lay hidden but alive
in the damp cold soil covered, perhaps by last autumn's still decaying leaves.
In such an unwelcoming seed bed, the bulbs germinated, sent out new shoots and
grew into something beautiful for us and for God. If they were kept safely
clean, warm and dry on a

The Union Budget's out, and while it covers some ground in meeting our

Courses, media fellowships, briefings and new reports... this edition of

EDITORIAL: Grand distraction called river interlinking
by Sunita Narain
==
Last fortnight, the Supreme Court issued a diktat to the government to
implement the scheme to interlink rivers. The directions are
straightforward. The government shall set up a high level committee of
ministers and other representatives on interlinking of rivers; the
committee shall meet “at least, once in two months”; in the absence of any
member the meeting shall not be adjourned; the committee shall submit a
biannual report on actions to the Union Cabinet, “which shall take final
and appropriate decisions in the interest of the country as expeditiously
as possible and preferably within 30 days from the matter being placed
before it for consideration.”

Without getting into the obvious matter of judicial overreach, let us take
a careful look at what interlinking is all about and what the decision will
simply. The fact is that transfer of water from one river basin to another
is not, per se, either a novel or an untested idea. Every irrigation
project involves such transfer at some scale. The question is what this
particular idea of linking rivers implies.

The term river linking has come from the idea floated by irrigation
engineer K L Rao way back in 1972. He proposed the construction of a
grandiose Ganga-Cauvery Canal, which would divert floodwaters of the Ganga
near Patna for about 150 days in a year to river Cauvery some 2,640 km away
in the south. This idea captured imagination, as it seemed to state such a
delicious proposal: take excess water from the Ganga to the water-deficit
and stressed areas of Tamil Nadu.

A pilot, Captain Dinshaw J Dastur, suggested a variation: construction of
garland canals, one for the Himalayan watershed and the other for the
Western Ghats. This idea was also appealing, simple and essential.
Long-distance irrigation projects then spawned a huge water bureaucracy. In
1982, the National Water Development Agency was set up to study and
implement the project to first link peninsular rivers and then Himalayan
rivers. Its objective is based on the same simple concept: there are floods
in some parts, droughts in the other, so if we link the rivers, we all will
be happy.

But for equally obvious reasons the agency’s proposals were, government
after government, studied, considered and buried. But not forever. In early
2000, the Supreme Court and government got back into the game. The court
ordered the government to speed up implementation of the project and set
the deadline of 2016 for its completion. The National Democratic Alliance
then in power quickly announced the setting up of a task force for linking
rivers. It was to complete some 30 river links in two years, adding some
1,000 km of canals. This task was a non-starter.

The next government came to power and while the concept appealed, better
sense prevailed. Interlinking was found technically unfeasible and costly.
But the water bureaucracy did not give up. In 2008, the National Council of
Applied Economic Research produced a study volume, in which it explained in
simplistic terms that the project would cost Rs 4,44,331.2 crore at the
2003-2004 rates. But this investment would lead to rich dividends in terms
of increased household income and prosperity for all, it stated. The report
would have gone unnoted but for the Supreme Court, which has bought this
line and ordered the government to obey or face contempt.

The question still is: what does

I am grateful to Gabe for the very informative link provided on the Kenya
Regiment.
I was ignorant of many of the aspects mentioned in the link.
Yes, the Kenya Regiment was a White preserve, and having been stationed in
Kitale(one of the key centres of the White settlers), I got to know quite a
few of
them.
The Turkana tribe, who I got to love during my time with them, are a
war-like
tribe to this day, and even when I was there, there were frequent raids
between
the Turkana and the Donyiro tribesmen from the Sudanese border, as also the
Merille
from the Ethiopian side. All said and done though, I still love the Turkana!

[Goanet] Thank you for Visiting Planet Earth-Our Goa is ok

2012-03-19 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear fellow goanet readers

Some of our super clever intelluctuals visiting planet earth via Goanet can now
go back home with their video recorders
and sunglasses. The Goa elections are now completed and the incoming Government
is in Position. I can only hope
previous postholders did not shred their work and will work with the current
postholders on matters that will benefit the
state, the environment and its people.

As my airbus was approaching Goa a real live commentary was started by two
Gulfies from Duler starting with poi amche
Goia burem dista. The sun was shining over a canopy of green trees when near
Siradao there was a gash in the
mountainside the size of three football pitches exposing soil where trees once
grew. It may have been the illegal felling of
timber as it could not have been caused by the Elections as electronic voting
machines were used. Congratulations must
go to all involved in the electoral process in organising a fair and orderly
voting process. Politicians and democracy go
hand in hand, one cannot work without the other.

In the United Kingdom we still use a pencil cross on Paper, an environmental
waste of trees, unlike in Goa, and given the
will can be addressed in the west. I did not spot any party political symbols,
if there was one I would recommend the
Triangle. In America the triangle in the workplace has the pointed end at the
bottom with the base at the surface, People
helping each other to the surface with their hands so that everyone becomes
top. The British System has the triangle top
facing the sky everyone stepping on each other with their boots, until one gets
to the top.

Amongst our people I keep hearing the phrase top job, top shot etc so I was
surprised to hear of visiting Canadian Seniors
(polite term for old people) tipping porters at Dabolim Airport one rupee
saying last time they gave four annas. This does
not look like the American triangle upside down. All said and done I also heard
visitors from England to the Diamond
Jubilee of Nairobi Institute a few years ago found difficulty in tipping the
coach driver who was with them all week the
equivalent of five pence! I cannot say this was the triangle top facing
skywards, more like British style, an admin system
of keeping people down.

Goa airport has a new terminal being built and will look like London Gatwick
North when completed. Dabolim, unlike
Bombay, can handle wheelchair bound customers with chairs that fit the aisle of
the aircraft and lifts to travel from floor to
floor - lifts use a lot of electricity. As you leave the Airport a new highway
with modern street lighting is almost completed,
with most roads in Goa now tarmac hence dust is reduced, the fumes from vehicle
exhausts is also well filtered less led
pollution for young people. It was good to note workers cultivating crops
growing in the fields just like the old days.
With the local greed we hear about Shopping in the Tourist belt of Candolim and
Calangute one can expect to pay tourist
prices however I found a delightful store in Mapusa Market called Tourist
Paradise where almost everything was at local
prices. The same can be said for other stores around the market. Francis bakery
and Xaviers are indeed good value for a
quick meal. There are still a lot of good people in Goa, with 87% voting I ask
that we all look at life with an upside down
triangle helping each other for the the benefit of all. Armchair Madvisor's
should not be taken seriously and be allowed to
continue on their way away from planet earth.

Congratulations and best wishes to Mr Parrikar and the Government of Goa Team.

[Goanet] DG's statement on the Launch of the SME Exchange

2012-03-19 Thread CII-Goa
Dear Members of the Media,

Would be most obliged if you could kindly carry the appended press release in
your esteemed newspaper.

Statement on the Launch of the SME Exchange

by Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII

Commenting on the launch of the SME Exchange, the CII Director General, Mr
Chandrajit Banerjee commended the Ministry of MSME and Securities and Exchange
Board of India (SEBI), for guiding the bourses and facilitating the way forward
for the SMEs to access equity finance. Congratulating the Bombay Stock Exchange
(BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), for the path breaking initiative,
he added that the launch provides a great opportunity for the existing and the
greenfield entrepreneurial ventures, besides the investors community, in the
SME space.

He added that this was pending on the CII agenda, as an alternate means, to
bridge the gap on the availability of finance for the SMEs. It is essential
that there are competing segments for SME in the stock market for ensuring that
the trading platforms function in the best manner for providing services to SME
and the investing public in a cost effective manner. Competition among Stock
Exchanges and amongst their segments is essential also for the introduction of
new financial products through a process of innovation. Under this environment,
SME would be in a better position to foster equitable economic growth and
promote inclusive growth.

Reiterating CIIs commitment to work in partnership with all the concerned
stakeholders, Mr Banerjee suggested the further need for streamlining
procedures related to Market Making and incentivisation for Listing on SME
Exchange.

2012-03-19 Thread John Gomes
Dan Driscoll held a Literary Hour at XCHR, in tribute to departed  wife
Germana in the presence of her Christian Ashram mentors and senior residents of
Anjali Ashram where Dan's Guru, late Fr Amalorpavadass inspired him and taught
him the Gayatri Mantri which he recited fluently and passionately. He also sang
her favorite songs accompanied on the violin by Christo Fernendes of Kala
Academy fame and also young boy violinist! He recited poetry from a booklet
handout given to all those who attended, mostly her lifetime friends and
relations. Poems by Emily Dickenson, Walter de la Mare, Yeats, and Ralph Waldo
Emerson's poem BRAMHA!The Kingfisher by W.H.Davies etc.He also regaled us with
stories if how he met his wife and why he left Canada 25 years back to live
happily in Goa, with his wife after the hassls of renting/building of their
residence by the Mandovi river. A beautiful painting of the photo he took of
her with Umbrella opened as sunshade at Mira
Mar was prominently displayed and the artist who drew it was on his way to
attend, but unfortunately could not find XCHR before the function ended.

The whole function was conducted in his inimitable, informant and knowledgeable

[Goanet] I will ensure zero tolerance to corruption in Public Works Department

2012-03-19 Thread Gabe Menezes
In response to my comment that 'the gravy train continues unabated' the man
has come out with the following:-

I will ensure zero tolerance to corruption in Public Works Department:
Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar

PANAJI: PWD minister
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/PWD-minister Ramkrishna
'Sudin' Dhavalikar on Saturday said he would ensure zero tolerance to
corruption in the PWD.

Speaking to STOI, Dhavalikar, who was given PWD, transport and river
navigation portfolios on Friday night, said I wish to assure everyone that
strict action will be taken against anyone indulging in corruption.
Stating that he had already warned engineers in the department,
Dhavalikar said I want to make it very clear, we believe in zero tolerance
to corruption and will ensure that.

He denied that there was any corruption in the PWD, transport or river
navigation departments, when he was the minister in-charge of the
departments in the Congress-led government. People know the good work I
have done in transport, river navigation and PWD, the Marcaim MLA said.
Referring to the criticism by the BJP against him in the past, Dhavalikar
said the opposition had merely done its duty, but there was no truth in any
of the charges made. Even the
Congresshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Congress had
made allegations against
mehttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Against-Me,
despite the fact that I had taken so many initiatives, he said.

Dhavalikar said he was not transport
ministerhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/transport-minister
when
the high security registration plates (HSRP) proposal was approved and
Cumbharjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar was the transport minister, who had
cleared it.

Dear fellow Goans,

Just because you made the effort to go to that polling station on 3rd March
, you think you have done your bit for Goa? I hope not!
Our work has just began, and we still have a long way to go.

Amongst the cacophony of voices lamenting their plight if illegal mines
are closed, and the insane cry from the mining lobby to continue to despoil
Goa's hinterland, it is crucial  that Parrikar's government also hears our
harmonious voices to preserve Goa's crucial Western Ghats and
biodiversity and water resources.  It is very important to add your voice
to our chorus!

It just takes a minute of your time to sign the petition.  That minute will
contribute to preserve something that is precious and of vital importance
for future generations of Goans and humanity in general – the unique and
rich biodiversity of Western Ghats and the source of Goa’s water resources.

[Goanet] Arrey, you are doing cheating men!

2012-03-19 Thread Frederick Noronha
This evening, I happened to be reading while the kids were playing
football in a nearby field.

Their innovative use of language attracted my ear:

Arrey, you are doing cheating men!

Kick, men!

Behind, men!

There were one or two other interesting forms of usage, which I
quickly jotted down on my palm, but forgot to quickly transcribe. By
the time I was back home, it had vanished thanks to the constant
friction against my bike handlebar, I guess.

This is not to complain about the falling standards of English in
Goa. On the contrary.

I would see this as a unique form of English developing here, thanks
to the interaction with forms, sentence structure and inflections of
the Konkani language. One day, while Leroy was seated next to me in
the Kala Academy, he drew my attention to the speech of a certain
former chief minister. Look, look! Check the way he's translating
Konkani into English.

And Leroy was right. Every sentence almost could be imagined as a
direct reflection of its Konkani original.

Would anyone know any studies of this form of English? Before someone
goes ahead and labels this as badly-spoken English, I think we need to
make a case for it being just a dialectical variant of English. My
friend Valentino How to be An Instant Goan Fernandes, half-seriously
dismisses this as Konklish.

But I think it deserves more seriousness and study than that. FN

[Goanet] Fw: A Major Fracas in Aldona

2012-03-19 Thread floriano

A Major Fracas in Aldona.

Aldonkars are agitated over illegally approved residential cum commercial
project coming up in the heart of Aldona, on the main road leading to the
Aldona Market area.
The builder Mr. Kadam is believed to have compromised on the setbacks of his
new construction, where the old structure has been demolished to make way
for a new one. Law requires that any construction on MDR has a setback of
12.5 meters from the center line of the road plus 3 meters building's
frontal setback making in all 15.5 meters. The side setbacks for a ground
plus two structure is 4 meters on all three sides. The plan which shows the
required setbacks has been approved by the TCP. However, when the builder
moved rock breaking machinery yesterday, it is when the trouble started with
the neighbouring houses making a hue and cry about the rock cutting to the
extent of 1.5 meters which could damage the houses. Photos show that the
perimeter shielding by corrugated sheets has compromised all norms of
setbacks.

A large number of agitated Aldonkars stormed the Mapusa TCP office this
morning (along with yours faithfully) demanding immediate stop-work orders
and the conduct of inspection to check the required setbacks. The inspection
was reluctantly sheduled for this evening at 3.30 p.m. When TCP put the tape
from the center of the road inwards to 15.5 meters and 4 meters from the
rear boundary, there was no place left to build anything. The question asked
was: How was this project approved??

Incidentally, the builders have used strong-arm tactics, muscle power and
political clout ( read Ex- MLA Dayanand Narvekar) and has got the plans
approved. The builder has been foolish enough to demolish the old structure
completely to make way for an ambitious new one. The new structure could
have been accomodated on the old plinth. But no ! The builders banked on the
ex-MLA's clout. The ex-MLA is no more to protect the builder and has gone
with the wind.

I have specifically told the TCP members at the site that from now on, I am
watching what is happening on this site and how the structure will come up
with compromised setbacks. This is because Dayanand Narvekar had not only
raised my building's (Dora Apartments- Moira) issue in the Goa Legislative
Assembly but had also instigated a WRIT PETITION in the High Court. And he
had completely lost face when the Petition was thrown out. I had defended my
own case in person. And ever since I have nursed a hurt of being deprived of
the Occupancy Certificate for 2 and half years.

As far as I am concerned, Kadam Builders will have to accomodate a few
gaddas or shops in a strip not measuring more that 2 meters x 8 meters. And
Aldonkars are going to stick to their demand that proper setbacks are
maintained. Or else there is always the HIGH COURT OF BOMBAY AT GOA.

Cheers

Thanks, John Eric, for that nice portrayal of the evening. I too found the
experience uplifting, largely due to the beautiful audience response. You
missed spotting Modak (the artist), but in fact he did manage to find XCHR
and arrive quite late; he and his party accompanied us to the Mandovi Hotel
dining room where we had a late dinner.

We (you and Germana, and me) have had a long and fruitful association.
Among dear Germana's papers was an envelope with two 500 rupee notes and
her few lines to you (unsent), with regret that she could not more often
entertain you for a meal. I think that she must have been one of the first
to sign on for your Janata Shopping Coop---if I have the name at least
partially correct. As I told you, I used the money for our transport to
that interesting Savia Viegas literary evening @ Literati.

I give you 'farewell salute' as a fellowe of the naval fraternity; I
managed to qualify for Officer Status in the R.C.N, (Royal Canadian Navy)
but declined a Navy Commission for entry to Seminary and 'the Church'.
Water is gone under many bridges by now---but we are still able to carry
on. I hope my EID remains the same, with my Address Book 'in the cloud'; so
we will no doubt be in touch again.

[Goanet] Regionalism over Nationalism

2012-03-19 Thread Nelson Lopes
Regional politics dictates National politics
The mercurial., unpredictable and highly emotional Mamta has got her way Mr
Dinesh Trivedi has to to be replaced by Mukul Roy another TMC nominee This
is the first time such an fiasco has arisen in the Parliament UPA II very
conveniently agrees with the decision and prerogative of the coalition
partner The Regional party singly is taking umbrage at raise in fares, Will
the fares be dropped to concede with the primary demand? The TMC has other
aces on its sleeves. It has chosen to walk out and abstain and this absent
ism has helped the UPAII on the issue of NCTC.It has also serious
reservations on FDI in retail.Besides fuel prices. The P.M.feels that UPAII
has not lost its credibility because of compulsion of coalition politics It
stands firm, without back tracking, wavering and consultation are necessary
evils in the long run, needing more time and more consultations UPA II
however appears vulnerable and on the defensive However the allies are to
be consulted well in advance,, so as not to precipitate a crises. The
opposition parties are exploiting this weak stance, of pampering to
Regional parties over federalism and National interests
The example of GST an issue of National interest is gathering dust for the
last 3 years due to opposition and consultative process with non UPA II
Govt in other states. However it is processed with patience and is in its
final stages of agreement and cannot be trust down on the Nation, with no
majority in the Parliament The UPAII will not be provoked into a fight
however long the process of consultations are needed
The DMK another coalition partner wants the Central Govt to support the
Human Right violations by USA , France and Norway There is a real threat
to the survival of UPAII considering the numbers. The Govt does not support
human right violations, but so far has never backed a resolution by another
country. At the same time it cannot afford to arraign Sri Lanka and pust it
into the waiting arms of China and lose Geo political advantage The Govt is
selectivey inclined to consider voting against the inhuman , the innocent
killing in cold blood of the Tigers son as a safe strategy
The DMK a local, Regional party is now asserting regional policies on the
National level because of pandering to local situation and vote banks
However the UPAII does not consider these two incidents as a big deal to
protect National interests and survival of UPAII at least till completion
of the term

[Goanet] Father of Goan Democracy

2012-03-19 Thread ravi raikar
Velim, Salcete Goa: 15th March 2012. In the light of recently concluded
elections, Goans from all walks of life today commemorated the 84th birth
anniversary of the “Father of Goan Democracy” late Shri. Roque Santana at
his home, in Velim the place where Goan vision of Democracy was born in
June of 1962 and today where his mortal remains rest . Echoing his words ‘
not to use Democracy to loot people’, they recollected how this youth of
Velim spearheaded a mighty revolution that brought in Democracy and
Election in Goa in Dec 1963 and established a new way of life for Goans.

For over 450 years the Portuguese dictated rule in Goa. Goans did not know
what was Democracy and Election. Even after liberation of Goa the
Portuguese-type practice of nomination to run the administration of Goa
continued by Lt. Governors. This young freedom fighter from Velim could no
longer tolerate brute nominations for administrations of Goa. . He turned
down all personal offer from Lt. Governor and crusade the lengths of Goa
opposing this issue. This time Roque Santana knew he had to fight again and
alone and in a unique way, he thought of the Gandhian way as after
liberation he had turned to non-violence.

Still recovering from grave wounds he suffered from Portuguese gun
battles, on June 10th 1962 he went on fast unto death, “Satyagraha” in
front of Historical Margao Municipality Bldg. Thousands of Goans
demonstrated, closed down streets and shouted slogans against the Lt.
Governor. Three days into it Prime Minister Nehru intervened into this
first ever post-liberation Goan unrest and persuaded him to end his
Satyagraha with a promise to fulfill his demand.

The next day Mr. Nehru send his close friend Mr.Gopal Handoo to Velim to
meet this Prince of Goa. In the presence of his father Mr.Ave , Roque
Santan proposed Equality in Election and Democracy as promised in the
Preamble and Constitution of India for Goans by marking Assembly and
Parliamentary constituencies. After his meet with PM Nehru in New Delhi the
mega process for democracy in Goa was started and the first ever election
in the history of Goa was held in Dec of 1963.

[Goanet] MARRIED PARISH PRIEST's INDIAN CIVIL SERVICE

2012-03-19 Thread :
The Vatican disallowed married people from becoming priests after observing
married priests were passing on church money, assets properties to their
wives - in-laws children……and also observing the married priests having
difficulty in performing the morning Eucharistic celebrations or Mass if
the priests had sex with their wives the previous night……..in the 1930’s
those european youth who wanted to join the catholic religious orders were
dragged into joining the army to fight in the second world war most of whom
may have died so after second world war catholicism started declining in
Europe due to shortage of priests……in order to solve the problem of
shortage of priests maybe the vatican will have to give contract to some
bright engineering students to develop a robotic priest which can be
programmed to perform different types of mass…….as far as India is
concerned a Good Parish Priest is the one who is an excellent homilist,
thoughtful, wise, theologically and liturgically astute, intellectually
sound and of the highest integrity…..who asks thoughtful and probing
questions.who expects truthful and accountable behavior………..….who
wrestles with the complicated challenges of life…….who behaves in a
principled manner……….….who is NOT shallow, silly, insecure, self absorbed,
fiscally irresponsible, rude or greedy……….who will not maintain any
records/parishcards of the parishioners just like Hindu temples Muslim
Mosques do not maintain any records of their devotees living near the
temples mosques……who takes bath in the morning before entering the
church.…who has basic theoretical knowledge of homeopathy allopathy
ayurveda unani medicine..……..who discourages the catholic parishioners from
drinking alcohol……….…who discourages the laity from eating the unhealthy
unhygienic bakery maida pavs………..…who advices women who wear vulgar or
short clothes not to defile the place of God and attend church only in full
length and sober clothes………who baptizes only those catholics who have
christian/catholic names……….who ensures 50% seats in parish schools are
reserved for children of catholics…..who ensures church halls grounds
are utilized for combat training of catholic youth……...who encourages the
catholic youth to dream work towards becoming ias/ips/irs/ifs officers
doctors engineers etc…….….who encourages the laity to apply for govt. jobs
bank jobs police jobs etc.who ensures church funds are utilized for the
benefit of the parishioners……..……who uses church assets – wealth –
resources - properties for the benefit housing financial and other needs of
catholic parishioners…UNFORTUNATELY most of the parish
priests simply offer Mass in a routine style, preach uncontroversial piety
or popular psychology, hear Confessions passively, answer the phone and
door, pay the diocesan assessment (the tax on parish income), misuse church
assets, wealth, resources, properties for their personal benefit, refuse
admission in parish school to children of poor catholics, do not discourage
the laity from drinking alcohol, etc.

The Roman Catholic church operates in an undemocratic way………The Laity have
no say in the selection of the priest for their parish………all church run
magazines will not publish suggestions or articles from the laity related
to reforms in the catholic church…….all catholic church supported sabhas
forums associations missionaries institutions will do what the clergy want
them to do and not what the laity want them to do……….for the lay catholics
it’s a dead end.

The former rulers of India i.e. the Protestant Britishers ran India’s
administration, revenue collections, law order, etc through Civil Service
officers……..in Independent India the ruling party politicians are also
running India’s administration, revenue collections, law order, etc
through Civil ( ias – ips – irs – ifs ) service officers...the civil
services are the STEEL FRAME on which the whole structure of government and
of administration in India rests………..….when the British were around India’s
population corruption was less so everybody for a few paisa could buy
plenty of food crime was less and life was more comfortable….from 1960s
onwards India’s population corruption level rapidly started increasing
which resulted in all these problems : inflation, unemployment problems,
poverty, lack of peace, lack of education, lack of jobs or other
employment, lack of hygiene, lack of sanitation medicines and health care,
lack of transport, food shortage, water shortage, land shortage, growth of
slums, anger, fights, beating, shouting, quarrels, crying, breaking of
things, arson, rioting, communal disharmony, forced begging, forced labor,
committing variety of crimes, various nefarious activities like smuggling,
settling personal feuds or in creating trouble during elections, mob
mentality and damage and burning of public and private
property..….Strangely anyone in India who joined the real estate
construction

[Goanet] The Goan Cardinal

2012-03-19 Thread Roland Francis
Ossie Cardinal Gracias is a most humble man and priest. Thanks to MD on
Goanet, I was made aware of and attended the mass he said at Ste Marguerite
d'Youville in Brampton in the west end of Toronto's Greater Area. It was his
first visit to Canada. It is rumored that he is the foremost among Asian
Cardinals in stature, rank and popularity and that if an Asian cardinal is
elevated to Pope one day (little chance of that though) it will be this
unassuming man,

Meeker than a simple village priest, he carries his learning and his
positions in India, Asia and in the Vatican, lightly on his tall and lean
frame. His 4 pm mass in the modern and spacious church was a pleasure to
attend and his homily message simple and plain like himself, was on 'living
the faith'.

After mass we all retreated to the church hall for a pot luck lunch where
the cardinal showed his friendly side and patiently greeted all the people
who lined up to talk to him and some who asked him to bless their small
children. The personal camera flashes were never-ending. A few Italian and
German older couples were thrilled that he conversed with them in fluent
Italian and German. They must have thought he would talk to him in some
Indian language, I suppose.

My wife a relative of the cardinal and also from Mahim and Orlim was
especially happy to meet him and to know that he knew us well even though we
had left India more than 35 years ago. I had never met him before. Could he
possibly also be a relative of Goanet's Radharao Gracias, since he too has a
connection with Orlim..

If only all the churches bishops and cardinals were like him, the Church
would be better positioned to evangelize by virtue of example.

Toronto wishes you well, Eminence and hopes you come again.

Roland.

[Goanet] Shah Commission’s report laid on NDTV house, what about Parliament, Naik asks Patel sarcastically

2012-03-19 Thread SHANTARAM NAIK
Shah Commission’s report laid on NDTV house, what about Parliament, Naik
asks Patel sarcastically

When Shah Commission's Report inquiring into illegal mining in various
states of the country was allegedly placed on the table of “NDTV’s
House” when will it be placed on the table of Rajya Sabha, asked Mr.
Shantaram MP in the Rajya Sabha today during question hour.

Mr. Naik said that on 22nd November 2010 a Commission was appointed
under the Chairmanship of Justice Shah to inquire into illegal mining.

Mr. Naik said that it is learnt that the commission has given report in
part, and therefore, wanted to know how such a report could be given in
part when there was no provision in the law for the purpose. Mr. Naik
added by saying that, there should either be an interim report or a
final report.

He asked the Minister of Mines, Shri Dhinshaw Patel whether the report
has been accepted by the government and further as to when it will be
laid on the table of the House.

Mr. Naik said that he would like to know the exact position due to the
fact that NDTV claimed two months back that they had a copy of a report
and that nobody from the government issued any clarification.

Replying to Mr. Naik, Mr. Patel said that the report of the Shah
Commission was submitted to my office 3 days back.

The report requires to be studied and the suggestions made therein are
required to be gone into. He further said that the present report deals
with Goa and after the government receives reports regarding other
states, there is a 6 months period to lay on the table of the House.

He also said that the government may do it earlier also but it is only
after studding the report that it will be laid on the table of the House.

[Goanet] Parrikar shows his 'communal' instincts again

2012-03-19 Thread anil desai
http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/gcwu-hails-parrikar-s-decision-pre-pone-iffi

Unlike the 'secular' Kangress government that organised last year's IFFI
clashing with the dates of St Xavier's feast, Parrikar, by an executive
order, has fixed dates for IFFI that do not clash with this important feast
for the Catholic community. I am surprised that Soter, the new standard
bearer of righteousness in Goan public life missed out on this glaring act
of communalism by the 'saffron' leader.
Hope Parrikar makes many many such communal decisions in the next five
years.

Architecture and Urban Places held at the International Center between

Pune, Mumbai, and New Delhi and of course the faculty and students of

[Goanet] Shantaram Naik congratulates Ambika Soni on International Film Festival Dates

2012-03-19 Thread SHANTARAM NAIK
Shantaram Naik congratulates Ambika Soni on International Film Festival
Dates

Mr Shantaram Naik MP today, met Union Minister of Information and
Broadcasting and congratulated the minister for getting new dates
approved for holding International Film Festival from 2012, from the
International Federation of Film Producers Association, Paris.

In a statement issued from New Delhi Mr Naik said that confirmation of
the new dates, namely, from 20th November to 30th November, 2012 for
holding International Film Festival was received by Shri Shankar Mohan,
Director, International Film Festival of India, New Delhi from Benoit
Ginisty, Director General, International Federation of Film Producers
Association, Paris by his letter dated 1st March, 2012.

Mr Naik said that he along with Mr Francisco Sardinha had been pursuing
the matter with Mrs Soni prior to the commencement of 2011 International
Film Festival, however, since it is the concerned international body
from Paris, which had to give approval, dates could not be changed last
year.

It is strange that those who are unconnected with the efforts made in
this regard are taking credit which is not due to them.

The decision, it is apparent, Mr Naik said, was conveyed much before the
new Government in Goa took over.

Further, Mr Naik said that Mrs Soni has told him that she has received
representation that even these new dates are not finding favour with the
representatives of Christian community, and therefore, new dates to hold
the festival from either 10th November to 20th November or from 5th
December to 15th December, are also being explored.
