Re: [Goanet] Capitalism: A Ghost Story
This article was also cross-posted on Secular Goa forum. What it has to do with secularism beats me. Indian political activists appear to have invented a weird mixture of left-wing and right-wing ideologies. Anti-capitalism, Marxism, Maoism, non-Hindu religious chauvinism, sectarianism, persecution complex, sedition impulse, global conspiracy mongering, self-hate, anti-nationalism, postmodernism, selective minority rights, denialism, etc. are all mixed together under the banner of secularism. On the other extreme, there is the bhel puri of Hindu religious chauvinism, comunalism, theocratic nationalism, casteism, revisionism, majoritarianism, denialism, postmodernism, global conspiracies, etc. Please note that religious chauvinism, denialism, conspiracy theorizing and postmodernism are common to both extremes. Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] Goan art renaissance
There is no Renaissance of art in Goa 1. There is no Renaissance of art in Goa; artists here have never stopped practicing their art. That is a misnomer. There are simply more and better support platforms in Goa itself. 2. Part of the problem with art in Goa is the absolutely puerile manner in which people with no applied art experience, nor art-critical, art historical, curatorial, or indeed any relevant working or academic background write about it. Art writing is not sports writing, where one assigns gold medals and cheers the all-time greats. If I were a buyer or just generally interested in art, I would want to know what specific technical, aesthetic and other criteria the author applies to determine whether a work is outstanding or culturally significant, and what is his specific criteria in rating a work or a show, and how that compares with shows of an international calibre, other than personal preference. 3. Another problem is the manner in which art is exhibited in Goa: entirely without context or selection criteria. At most exhibitions, art is simply bunged on the wall in such a crowded way that it cannot even be viewed properly. With art, less is more. The works need space around them And while I'm happy that artists here are gaining increasing exposure, the shows themselves are generally not of a curatorial calibre that would impress serious buyers, dealers, collectors, gallerists, credible art critics in this country or abroad. We have to do better. 4. When looking for uniqueness and originality in new work, one would not be looking for the next Souza or Gaitonde, but for something fresh. 5. That said, I (and numerous economically non-elite) happen to own works by most of the artists Mr Menezes mentions. I personally own at least 50 other works by Goan (both dead and alive) and Goa-based artists. This is because I believe in supporting our artist community as a whole, not as an ethnic exercise. If buying is the agenda, let the author buy himself, instead of berating others. People have the right to buy whatever work they choose without being publicly chastised for not doing so. 6. There is no School of Goan Painting that unifies our artists in a particular style, and nowhere on the planet is the quality of an art work determined by, or discussed in terms of, what state/region of a country it is painted in, save when discussing folk art and craft. No serious art connoisseur talks or writes about California art, New York art, Cote d'Azur art, Haryana art, and so forth. It is ridiculous to do so. The function of art is to transcend boundaries not create them. Art should never be presented from this patronising, provincial, and essentially ethnically communal point of view. 7. It is counterproductive to constantly present the Goan or Goa-based artist or writer as a victim, as though there is some insidious conspiracy against them. The life of a committed artist, especially in difficult financial times, has always been hard in personal terms. One does what one has to in order to practice ones art, and if that includes leaving, so what? Thousands of writers and artists all over the world have done it. If Souza and Gaitonde found success in the international sphere, more power to them. They would hardly have received the exposure, intellectual peer-ship and recognition they did if they had remained in Goa and been happy to be bought by a few rich bhatkars. In any case, they are dead, and we need to focus on the living, particularly young, emerging artists, and examine how the work holds up against the mainstream. We need to offer better mentoring facilities here in Goa. 8. Whether Ruchika's is the best art space in Goa is debatable. It's a gallery that is well lit and large, but architecturally boring. I much prefer Gitanjali as an interesting gallery space. Even the Sunaparanta galleries, though smaller, are more interesting. But the best gallery space I've seen in Goa is probably the Art Chamber in Calangute, which has the advantage of both architecture and natural light. 9. If this article were merely a review of 2 shows --at Ruchika's and at Gitanjali, and had limited itself to that, it wouldn't have attracted my attention, but it tries to be more--to be a kind of definitive word, and there it fails miserably. Any article presenting a picture of the nascent art scene in Goa to the outside world, needs to be inclusive and generous. This article completely ignores a number of others working in the field, some of them for over 20 years, such as Kala, Art Chamber, Art Escape, Sunaparanta, International Centre, Subodh Kerker (especially his promotion of and installation work with young artists), Theodore Mesquita's Vice Versa and international residency program, continuous and committed mentorship of artists by Apurva Kulkarni, etc. I find coterie and and blatantly self promotional behavior reprehensible and
[Goanet] The Goan charade
To Goanet - When Manohar Parrikar went public with his zero tolerance for corruption pledge, I knew at once that it was a big blunder. Having spent some time with him last month, a few weeks before the election, I knew that the scourge of public corruption was weighing on his mind. I think he meant this utterance in all sincerity but that it was said in the euphoria of the post-election mood. We have our weak moments. Why do I think it was a blunder? Because he set himself up for his foes to beat him with that stick, as is already evident. To these people, it won't matter if Parrikar drastically brings down the levels of corruption. They will still say, Look Ma, at that guy taking a 5% cut. It was all a hollow promise. But this post is not about Manohar-bab. It is about the zero-tolerance-for-corruption hawk-eyes that seem to have overnight broken out like a rash all over Goan cyberspace. This specimen demands that Parrikar stick to his word or else...!! Or else, he threatens, he will be watching closely. (In reality, bangdo khatlo ani vochun nidhtolo.) What is this, a new species of Goans sporting a brand new genome? But let us grant that they mean business. I, too, want Manohar to abide by his zero-tolerance-for-corruption promise. A man's word has to count for something. The wrinkle is, this newly minted army of we-will-be-watching-you-closely bums has yet to encounter that thing we normal people call the mirror. Let us consider a plausible scenario. Manohar cracks the whip and comes down hard on the multitude of land and construction scams of the past few years. Let us say he orders an immediate ban on large scale land conversion and construction, and puts the brakes on other hanky-panky across his departments. Now meet Mr. I-will-be-watching-you-closely (Mr IWBWYC for short), a Goan of average height, slight build, big mouth, and a legend in his own mind. Suddenly the zero-tolerance-for-corruption Mr IWBWYC realizes that his sister's husband's bhaoji's bapol bhau has been docked out of that handsome payday he was expecting after getting his orchard illegally converted. Following several months of illicit foreplay involving bribes booze, at the final climax walks in Mr Parrikar and spoils the party. Panic spreads through the ranks of family friends. It dawns on Mr IWBWYC that the zero-tolerance-for-corruption thing he had the hots for the past 4 weeks isn't such a pretty thing after all. What do you think happens next? Let me get you started. Mr IWBWYC goes on the warpath. The 'dynamic' CM Parrikar now turns into 'dictator' Parrikar whose 'arrogance' knows no bounds. Soon a sentence or two with the words saffron and RSS makes its maiden appearance. And before long, there is not one, but several Mr IWBWYCs raining fire and brimstone on Parrikar. Do you want me to continue, or do you get the picture? So to all the IWBWYC punters, I say: Go sit down in a quiet room and ask yourself the following question: Do I have zero tolerance to corruption myself? Only truthful answers, please. Have a nice day. Regards, r --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] From Antonio E Costa Re: [Goanet-News] Goan art renaissance
Who is this article by? Most interesting! In fact, Ram Kumar is one of the abstract artists I most admire, after, of course, Gaitonde. Antonio E Costa From: Goanet A-C-E! goa...@goanet.org To: gn-n...@goanet.org Sent: Sunday, 18 March 2012 8:24 AM Subject: [Goanet-News] Goan art renaissance Goan art renaissance TNN | Mar 18, 2012, 04.43AM IST All through the 20th century, Goa produced many of the most important and influential artists of the subcontinent, but every single one was forced to leave to seek opportunities elsewhere. We know the Goa government has always ignored its own best cultural talent. But potential art patrons - the economic elites of Goa - have also never displayed the sophistication required to recognize the art geniuses of their time. Generation after generation, our best artists such as Trindade, Fonseca, Chimulkar, Pai, Souza and Gaitonde have all been forced to seek their fortunes abroad. The case of the latter pair of Goans - lifelong friends and arguably the two most important modernists in Indian art history - is particularly stark when seen from their homeland. They both struggled to make a living right to the end. And both felt abandoned and neglected by their own people. It is an inconvenient truth that just ten years ago, any one of our richer citizens could have bought up scores of masterworks from either Souza or Gaitonde for the same price as just one imported car. But none of them ever did. We're still not much better in 2012, as we see history repeat itself at two impressive group exhibitions underway in Panjim. Together, they demonstrate a new generation of artists in Goa is steadily becoming a formidable cultural force, despite being overlooked by society. Those looking for the next Souza or Gaitonde could find him in the ongoing group exhibitions at Gallery Gitanjali (Fontainhas) and Ruchika's Gallery (Miramar). Ruchika's Gallery is the most impressive modern art space in Goa. While programming remains intermittent through the year, its management hosts large annual exhibitions that have quickly become the best way to see works by a large number of Goa-based artists. Over time, the quality has improved. 'Carnival of Colours 2012' is unexpectedly, consistently outstanding. While young artists have contributed some of their best work - notably Sachin Naik's immense woodcuts - it is the senior artists who really impress. Theodore Mariano Mesquita's 'Tempus Fugit' is the work of an image-maker of the highest capability. Similarly, Hanuman Kambli's untitled contribution showcases the senior artist at his very best. Francis D'Souza's abstract landscapes were a revelation. I rate them alongside the best Indian abstract painters work: Antonio e Costa, even the all-time-great Ram Kumar. But the gold medal surely goes to Sadguru Chendvankar, for the clear-eyed, rigorous 'The Beginning Foot'. It, and many other paintings in this exhibition, should be secured by the state for the benefit for future generations of artists. These very future generations dominate the exuberant curatorial debut by Miriam Koshy Sukhijia at Gitanjali Gallery. 'WYSIWYG' is an irresistible, obviously sincere collective effort by many of the participating artists to experiment, to take risks and push personal artistic boundaries. The ethic extends to the great Vamona Navelcar. Known for his elegant line, for epitomizing gentility, the seniormost contributor has rendered a grotesque skull-bedecked 'Ogre', a painting that immediately recalls Angelo da Fonseca's 'Apocalypse' (a likewise searing vision painted after a lifetime of making serene images). Praveen Naik's 'Whatever You Desire May it Be Fulfilled' is a highly memorable mythological future deity sculpted from papier-mache, thermocol, plastic and wood. It's also impossible not to like Norman Tagore's cheeky Thanda Matlab...(After Wei-Wei), a traditional mud water vessel with the Coca-Cola logo stenciled on the side. Andy Warhol would have smiled at this Ganvti Pop Art. Sitting discreetly on a table at the Gitanjali gallery is the best single work across both exhibitions. 'Ways of Seeing' is an exquisite, intimately personal artwork by Rajeshree Thakker. A little box shaped like a cupboard, it keeps unfolding to reveal hidden wonders. It is an apt metaphor for art in Goa in 2012. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Goan-art-renaissance/articleshow/12311858.cms Goanet A-C-E! I was wondering what will it take for this sort of stereotyping and derogatory depiction of goans to end. Just because we are susegad (they do not know the meaning), love music, song and dance and our feni and vindalo, we all are not bloody debauchers, drunkards, and party all the time and our women with loose morals. This was depicted by the old Hindi movies and propagated for tourist attraction. Speaking of elections,Goa was in the forefront of the IAC movement, many good NGOs fighting to save Goa with 80% voter turnout, sending packing winnable candidates and many heavyweights to reduce the arrogant congress to a minority, fill the Assembly with 50% of uncorrupt new faces and are on the road to a clean and green Goa with zero tolerance for corruption! Apropos Gabe's comment, I agree the region was known as the N.F.D. and wonder if this might not have been an unfortunate slip up on Selma's part when transposing the words? This is the N.F.D., Kenya's* *Northern Frontier District, about 100,000 square miles mostly* *volcanic desert.* Many years ago, I'd composed a poem on this region(which I love), the last verse of which ran: *Sir Richard Turnbull had this to say,* *The day he left Kenya, Tanganyika-way.* *My heart is in the N.F.D., he said,* *There too MY heart will always be!* * * * * *Mervyn Maciel* --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Iffi dates changed before new govt: Shantaram
Iffi dates changed before new govt: ShantaramTNN | Mar 20, 2012, 04.32AM IST PANAJI: Union minister of information and broadcasting, Ambika Soni stated that the possibility of hosting Iffihttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Iffi from either November 10 to 20 or from December 5 to 15 is being explored. Rajya Sabha MP, Shantaram Naikhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Shantaram-Naik stated in a press note issued from New Delhi that Soni had informed him about this after he met the minister on Monday and congratulated her for securing the approval from the International Federation of Film Producers Association, Paris, to the new dates to hold the international film festival in Goa. The Catholic community had complained that the event was clashing with the novenas and feast of St Francis Xavier. Naik said that he and South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha had pursued the matter with Soni prior to the commencement of Iffi 2011. However, the change in dates has to be approved by the Paris-based association, which could not be done in time. The letter dated March 1, 2012, written by Benoit Ginisty, director general of the Paris-based association, approving the change of dates to hold the festival from November 20 to November 30, 2012 was received by Shankar Mohan, director, Iffi, New Delhi. It is strange that those who are not connected with the efforts made in this regard are taking credit which is not due to them, Naik said. Chief minister Manohar Parrikarhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Manohar-Parrikar had announced that the dates of the festival have been shifted. Parrikar had recently announced that the schedule of Iffi had been changed to avoid a clash with Goa patron saint's feast. The decision, it is apparent, was conveyed much before the new government in Goa took over, Naik stated. Further, Soni informed him that Catholics have again appealed to her in a memorandum that they are not happy with the change in dates and want the high profile film event to he be held before or after the patron saints' festival. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Iffi-dates-changed-before-new-govt-Shantaram/articleshow/12336235.cms -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

It is quite stupid that Goan Katlicks were complaining about the clash (of dates) involving IFFI and SFX feast+novena. What are the Katlicks saying? Fr Loiola send me this response, with the request to circulate via Goanet: Dear Rico, I can’t resist responding to this. A few years ago, I was approached by my nephew, after I had preached at a wedding mass: “What you threw yaar!” he said. I said, “WHAT?” And then he translates: “Kitem uddoilem re tunvem!!” His brother shared with me what he had once overheard a girl telling her bf, obviously after some bold advances from him: “Doing-doing see where you reached!” (no translation required, I am sure). May be these gems will encourage you to encourage others to delve into further research. By the way, thanks for succeeding in bringing me to Goanet surface after a long, long hibernation! Loiola. By the time I was back home, it had vanished thanks to the constant friction against my bike handlebar, I guess. This is not to complain about the falling standards of English in Goa. On the contrary. I would see this as a unique form of English developing here, thanks to the interaction with forms, sentence structure and inflections of the Konkani language. One day, while Leroy was seated next to me in the Kala Academy, he drew my attention to the speech of a certain former chief minister. Look, look! Check the way he's translating Konkani into English. And Leroy was right. Every sentence almost could be imagined as a direct reflection of its Konkani original. Would anyone know any studies of this form of English? Before someone goes ahead and labels this as badly-spoken English, I think we need to make a case for it being just a dialectical variant of English. My friend Valentino How to be An Instant Goan Fernandes, half-seriously dismisses this as Konklish. But I think it deserves more seriousness and study than that. [Goanet] Shut-up, men! Re: Arrey, you are doing cheating men!
I am sitting in a printer's office at the Panjim Market, thinking how much further my research into Konkani-laced English could have gone, had I not made all kinds of commitments on all kinds of projects. But that is life. So as I missed my football-eavesdropping this evening, let me entertain myself and narrate a couple more of real life incidents. If you're a Cafe Prakash regular, you can't miss Dinesh Dias. Dinesh is a well-educated chartered accountant who, like me, preferred to retired before he touched 40 (and unlike me, decided to go on to savor the good things in life, by way of a holiday to Europe, and what not). How many of our hardworking Goenkars can afford such luxuries as they slog for their children's sake in some other part of the globe? But, I'm straying... Often when we shared our incredible tales, the conversation would go on these lines: Really? Of course, that's the way it was! Shut-up, men! (At which point, Nagpur-born Dinesh -- though he's also fluent in Konkani -- would explode, accuse me of being vey rude, of not believing him narration, and so on... I always wondered why he responded so negatively. His argument was that Shut-up is not to be used in polite discourse. It took me quite some time to marshal my arguments. Finally, I got down to telling him that shut up is only English for the Konkani, Oggi rao reh!, a way of expressing disbelief at a fantastic story. I'm still not sure if I've convinced him adequately.) At home too I ran into a similar problem. What you mean *just* serve me food! my better half would occasionally say angrily. Finally, it was Konkani to the rescue. This, to my mind, is nothing but a translation of the matxhe (or Kannada 'solpa'), a polite form of requesting! As in, Matxhe jevonn vadd. Did that convince you? FN PS: I hope I got the details right in my above narration. Anyway, as someone has said, why let a few facts come in the way of a good story :-) Frederick Noronha :: +91-9822122436 :: +91-832-2409490 --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] May Manohar Parrikar Prove Worthy
May Manohar Parrikar Prove Worthy Despite the well deserved heavy trashing, it looks like the Congress has not learnt an ounce of lesson, as even the selection of its mere opposition leader had a high end drama and treachery written all over it and not surprising “Pasta mama” had to step in to control some of the stubborn few of the very few wayward children left in the Goa Assembly. It only shows how fortunate we Goans are that Congress did not win the election because if they had somehow won, we could have had a stampede for the limited edition chairs in the Goa Assembly and they could have been playing the tug off war or the musical chairs for the next five years and Goa could have been bereft of any development, as well as even a semblance of good governance. Goans can only say good riddance ! This defeat has certainly shattered a lot of dreams and plans of those that transgressed while in power and now as retribution looms like a large dark cloud ready to burst, pour down and take them to sea, wile is already at work. It was as soon as the election results were declared that Babush Monseratte gave a hearty embrace to the BJP commandant and told the press that Manohar Parrikar was, is and will always remain his friend, was this a wily old Trojan horse that was presented or a white flag of surrender ? The significance of which was not late in coming, as the news papers state that Babush Monseratte who fought with all he had and made sure that Parrikar’s lobby was defeated at the Panjim Municipal hustling not so long ago, is now all ready to bring Parrikar’s lobby to power. Why such an extreme change of heart in such a short span of time ? I am sure Goans have seen through this veil of deception and I only hope the BJP commandant and the CM of Goa does not fall for a cheap trick of a third grade street urchin. Not to be undone the GVP leader, who before the election had thundered that no party will form the next government without his party’s help, ironically, he has now pledged unconditional support to the BJP even without being asked for. It certainly looks like the some of the lost sheep of the previous government are seeking shelter from retribution by offering goodwill. Wise up Parrikar. Finally, with the embers of excitement and suspense of the election dying down, Goans are looking forward to a new era of good and healthy governance in Goa after decades of decay and debauchery. With the BJP in an absolute majority, Goans for once have been spared of the ignominy of high end drams of horse trading and back stabbing despite pre-nuptial agreements that Goa has been so very unfortunate to witness in abundance over the decades, its respite at last. The new Assembly has just convened and with the formalities of the swearing-in done with, Goans expect the newly elected members of the Assembly to take up the gauntlet and do what needs to be done for the greater glory of Goa and Goans. Though Goan Catholics were skeptical of the BJP they seemed to have temporarily vanquished their communal fears, as it was the strong and total resentment against the Congress that forced the change of guard in Goa’s political elite, after a decade of free for all corruption, Goans opted for a change, even though surprised at the dimension of defeat of the Congress, its was certainly the need of the hour and Goans have acted responsibly and have now placed their faith and aspirations in the hands of Parrikar and the BJP. It is with great hope and anticipation that Goans in Goa and around the world are looking forward to an effective and efficient form of governance, may the change that has happened act as the much need catalyst for a comprehensive, constructive and healthy metamorphosis of Goa and Goans. May Parrikar prove worthy of the faith Goans have reposed in him. I have just been reminded by people who matter that I, as a politician and a corrupt politician at that, should not get involved in how my village has to be administered. at the Panchayat level without involving POLITICS. All this while I was under the impression that I was a SOCIAL ACTIVIST and that I had graduated to be a POLITICAL ACTIVIST because there is only so much that a SOCIAL ACTIVISTS can do, fighting social battles alone. I see that I am now accused of hi-jacking the GOEMCHEA RAKHONDARANCHO AWAZ. All this while and always, I believed and I shall always believe that I and my colleagues were instrumental of saving the GOEMCHEA RAKHONDARANCHO AWAZ from the JAWS of the RSS and the SWABINANS and the SAFFRONS by having it officially registered in name and style of the originally intended name of GRA. Kindly note that I am henceforth withdrawing from all type of Social Activism which will benefit my village of Moira or which will benefit my GOA. Probably, at this time, I am not qualified to call Goa as my GOA too. I am sorry to have involved Fr. Simpliciano Fernandes in the Village Activism and I have just told him that he should not withdraw from what he was planning to do for the village, but that I am withdrawing as of now. Hence forth, I shall be a simple village citizen who will not be interested in anything that is happening to or in the Village of MOira. I shall only vigourously GUARD my own interests, that of my family and of the very very few friends that I have. The rest BE DAMMED. And I believe that I am more than capable of guarding my own insterests. My special thanks go to two persons for whom I have had highest of regards for. One being Fr. Maverick Fernandes of CSJP and the other, Soter D'Souza, who is also with CSJP and who incidentally has managed to get out of the intestines of the SAFFRON BRIGADE and who is now lecturing others from high positions. May their brand of SOCIAL ACTIVISM flourish and keep Goa's Villages and our GOA safe and sound. And I do hope that the Vanxim Island as well as the Souto Maior's vast properties which the powers that be have embezzeled from out of the hands of the poor, for whom they were kept through dying WILLS of the benefectors may be returned to them safe and sound. It was the Bishop's Palace and the sermonizing minions under it which have been entertaining the CROOKED AND CHEATING POLITICIANS of the CONGRESS all these years even to the extent of giving them CHRISTMAS TEA PARTIES at the hallowed Palace of GOD and BLESSING THEM during their SWEARING-INs, to which I have vociferously objected to by WRITING. Now that the pulse of the people has changed, the Bishop's Palace has changed it's tune and has even gone to the extent of giving a vigorous hand-shake to the saffron poison L.K. Advani during the swearing-in ceremony of the New (Saffron) Chief Minister of GOA. I do hope that the Church goes on vigorously shaking hands with the Brigade for time to come as it did with the corrupt and cheating CONGRESS all this while. I wish Fr. Simpliciano Fernandes all the very best at what he is doing and at what he is trying to do. All that I shall do, in the mean time, is to keep my eyes and ears open and take-in all that is being done in the name of fellow-men and GOD Almighty and react to it in my own simple ways. Pointing to Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane’s petition in the High Court, Saldanha said the interest of the people living in the Sanctuary should be protected and the new Government will ensure it. “There is no threat to the wildlife from the locals living there”, the minister said. Rane, last year had filed a petition in the High Court challenging the 12-year-old Government decision of notifying areas of Mahdei Wildlife Sanctuary. Rane’s petition terms the notification as illegal as it directly affects the inhabitants of about 28 remote villages in the Mhadei area where the villagers carry on agricultural activities as their only source of income. Rane alleged that the decision to notify -- taken during President’s rule in 1999 -- was taken without conducting any study or proper survey/demarcation of the area. Nevertheless, some environment activists had also filed an intervention application in the petition expressing apprehension that Rane was acting in collusion with the Congress Government to ensure that the sanctuary notification is set aside in order to help the mining lobby. TIGER RESERVE: Matanhy asserted that tigers in Mhadei wildlife sanctuary need to be protected and said the proposal to declare the sanctuary as ‘tiger reserve’ will be examined by the State Government before taking any concrete stand on it. “It’s a serious issue which needs proper study. If it’s justified that there is tiger presence, then same could be referred to Union Ministry for suitable directions”, he said adding if there are tigers then we need to protect them. Environment activists in the State had been lobbying for declaring the sanctuary as ‘tiger reserve’. Along with State Government, a proposal was also sent to Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). Though MoEF had asked for a proposal to declare Mhadei wildlife sanctuary a tiger reserve, the then Congress-led Government feigned ignorance on the issue. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Rumblings within the allies of UPA II
Rumblings among the allies in UPAII The allies specially the NCP has the right to feel taken for granted the way TMC is pampered and giving it to her tantrums time and again. The Leader of NCP, Mr sharad power is on record that they may have differences of opinion on various issues, but never once rocked the boat and has been a very consistent and dependable ally The TMC is creating difficulties on various other issues like FDI in retail NCTC ,Fuel prices etc.The DMK has avoided and remained absent for the swearing ceremony of the new railway minister It has been peeved that two vacant posts of DMK Ministers have not been filled as yet and there is no urgency shown to fill the same, The defeat of DMK and cases against Kanimozi and others appear to be used to silence them The DMK has also threatened the centre to support the war crimes motion against Sri Lanka in their atrocities against the Tamilians there As the TMC staged a walk out the SP and BSP like in the past came to the rescue of the UPA II, thus saving it from some blushes and embarrassments The reason may be that their are serious case of disproportionate assets against MUlayam Sing Yadav and Mayawati , investigated by the CBI and they expect them to be soft pedaled or even withdrawn The Judge investigating the Mulayam case has retired, and hence it will start all over again , giving him a much needed breather The vocal Mamta seem to be exploiting the situation to the hilt and to her advantage and demands Meanwhile Up is burning with crimes one after another and the promise to end goodaism appears to be hollow. The supporters of opposition parties are killed and their houses burnt down , but there is no action against the criminals involved, The Minister Raja Bhaia is believed to have under oath in an affidavit lied about his age and this by itself is a crime at the highest level of the Govt functionary The UPA II is under constant stress and pulls, besides serious allegations of corruption against the congress in UPA II, Hence the coalition under UPAII appear to be busting at the seems and the opposition party calling it a weak waiting to colapse under its own weight and interna;l contradictions Nelson Lopes Chinchinim --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Wolfango J Dourado obituary
I did a search on Wolf after he died 2pm 19th March 2012 Zanzibar time and came upon an out of date but typically goan discussion about whether Wolf was the only lawyer in Zanzibar or what his actual title was, I don't think I ever got his title right once while he was alive. The devil is in the details. But what matters. Wolf loved his family more than himself. And love like that spills over. He might have been for some time the only British trained barrister on the island, being a Middle Templar. That was because he refused his first scholarship to read for a degree in Britain because his father had died and he was responsible for looking after his mother brothers and sisters. The British didn't believe some poor wog would refuse a chance to attend Oxford or Cambridge, so they offered no further support. He worked his way through the system starting at the bottom, it was some years later that he was given a second scholarship on full pay to read for the bar at the Middle Temple. Two years later he returned to Zanzibar and was appointed Crown Council when it was under British rule. He certainly referred to the trial after the assassination of President Karume first President after the revolution of 1964 in Zanzibar as its treason trials as did a British Documentary made in the 70s. There are two main systems of trial, inquisitorial as the Church still follows, or defence/prosecution. At the time the system was inquisitorial. He certainly did appeal for clemency for the murderers and to his credit they were not hanged. Zanzibar is as mature a democracy as anywhere in the West, but we exiles let her down. Real love spills over and cannot be contained. Only now do I get what my Uncle was about. We should have gone back. It would have taken only a few at first. We should have gone back and supported Wolf, Zanzibar would have turned back into a beautiful tropical paradise and become a model for all Africa. All it needed was for selfless men and women, talented exiles to return not to patronize but to reclaim our heritage. We should have recognized who we were Zanzibarbarians. And the island would have restored our rights. We should have come to heal to give not to take, following Wolf's example. We were Zanzibari Goans. Our culture lived for three generations. And with the death of Wolf it passes from this world in all but dark embers. But yes this sort of quibbling over details is another side of being Goan. Would that we had done more of this in Zanzibar. I search now to build another Zanzibar. Now I get my Uncle, the rebuilding is done always alone, and cannot be started with lust for success. I am Wolf's nephew. Of the many important relatives I have accrued through marriage, I call them cousin Uncles, for all the good it does me. I am a dreamer, a lost black sheep. I have lived an orphan for the past three years. Now Wolf is dead there is no one who can restore my family, or my heritage. All things arise and pass. I hope no one creates offence in any of the many mistakes wrong dates spellings of this piece. My Uncle loved me, he loved my mother Yolanda his sister far more, and I never got what he was about, what my mother was about, until now. He warned me that this would happen. That one day they would be dead and I should weep like a child. But that I had always thought was one of the more stupid obvious points he would make. If he had managed to convince me when they were alive, how different the world might be. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Veteran social activist turned politician bids adieu
I was pained to learn about the sad demise of a veteran social activist Mathany Saldanha. His contributions to the fight for protection of rights of the coastal people is his major contribution and will remain an inspiration for generations of activists. The last I actually had any interaction with him was during the CMZ debate about two years ago. The Goenchea Ramponnkaramcho Ekvott received its strength from Mathany. I had the chance to work with Mathany during the anti-SEZ agitation thru GMAS despite all criticism and accusations about my association with this BJP supported front. Three years later that our detractors, priests and social activists, have now embraced the same BJP is a welcome story. May God grant him Heavenly Abode. [Goanet] Goan Modernism
Goan Modernism By Vivek Menezes THE study of Modernism is in total upheaval all over the world. In the past decade, the subject has become particularly fraught with controversy and debate. A new generation of scholars has begun to contest even the most basic assumptions that underlie the way modernism has been framed, studied and discussed to this point. It's now becoming increasingly clear that we are going to see an entirely new approach and understanding of the subject replace the inadequate definitions of the past. All this has implications for Indian art's understanding of its own history, and particularly for Goa. As the old hierarchies are being shaken up, our remarkable, unquestionably great legacy of modern art is becoming recognized for its global and historical significance. The prevailing problem has been that - right until the present day - modernism has been treated as a walled-off European invention, a set of very specific cultural reactions against realism and tradition that took place in Western Europe and the United States in concert with, and as a result of, the far-reaching social and cultural changes that took place roughly between 1850 and the middle of the 20th century. The core sentiment of the movement might best be boiled down to Ezra Pound's famous exhortation, 'Make it new!' Thus, the artists and writers celebrated as exemplars of modernism consistently embraced disruption, discontinuity, and even dissonance, as crucial aesthetic values and choices. The issues created by the unabashed, indeed aggressive Eurocentrism of almost all scholarship and writing on modernism has been economically described by Rupert Richard Arrowsmith, the brilliant young art historian, in Modernism and the Museum: Asian, African and Pacific Art and the London Avant-Garde (OUP, 2010), a slim, volume of acute, terrifically researched essays that has levelled a devastating blow against many of the basic assumptions that bedevil contemporary understanding of the subject. He writes, '[H]istories of the period have been written, until very recently, by scholars with little or no knowledge of culture provinces other than their own, resulting in a situation where the dots of apparently discrete geographical regions are not adequately connected by lines of influence. In the western part of the Eurasian continent, and in the United States, this situation has led to a distorted view of modernism as essentially a European invention, with comparable movements on other parts of the globe characterized as imitative of 'advanced' art and literature in Europe, or - paradoxically - as reactionary and propagandist. The possibility of multi-directional, transnational exchange in aesthetic concepts, art-historical knowledge, and literary and artistic technique is thus discounted, played down, or at best acknowledged in tentative and misleading ways.' A former Buddhist monk who has spent years in Asia, Arrowsmith has quickly become an unpopular, even 'controversial' art historian in the academies of the West, because he has carefully connected previously unperceived dots to reveal the utter bankruptcy of generations of Eurocentric scholarship. Step-by-step, with startling insight, he has demonstrated how art and aesthetics from around the world had a profound, and ultimately crucial role in the development of many acknowledged modernist masterpieces. It is a claim that would have seemed hysterically audacious just a decade ago. But the evidence has been carefully marshalled, and no honest observer can deny the obvious. While art history has long acknowledged that Picasso's monumental modernist icon 'Les Demoiselles D'Avignon' contains images copied from African masks (among other things), Arrowsmith's findings now demand that textbooks be revised to reflect that Jacob Epstein's most important sculptures were almost entirely derived from his favourites in the Indian, Assyrian and African collections of the British Museum, and that Ezra Pound's pioneering modernist breakthroughs are actually 'adapted Japanese conventions, Korean imagery and Korean aesthetics' gleaned from the library of the same institution. There are many other examples in the same vein. Very recently, Arrowsmith spent a couple of weeks in Goa and Mumbai, which will soon feature at the centre of his next book, which is being built around a conclusion that I believe will set the agenda for coming generations of scholarship. He writes that it is now obvious that, 'Modernism actually evolved simultaneously, and with equivalent historical impact, in cities from one end of the Eurasian continent to the other.' It is a sentiment that finds an echo in the startled, but creditably open-minded reaction of the influential art critic of the New York Times, Holland Cotter, after he first encountered the work of Nandalal Bose in a groundbreaking retrospective held in Philadelphia in 2008.
