[Goanet-News] Wanted: tiatr scripts...
A friend whom I recently re-met recently from .Ca was enquiring about the availability of tiatr scripts in Goa. Are any available? I do know that the Tiatr Academy here, for instance, recently released the script of my good neighbour Albert D'Souza's *Mummy, Mhaka Tujea Vegin Dhor* in the form of a very reasonably-priced book/let. http://www.archive.org/details/ThreeTiatrkonkaniTheatreBooksReleasedInGoaIndia But am not sure how many such titles are available. Apparently, some in the expat communities overseas would like to consider the possibilities of staging some Konkani tiatrs there. Needless to say, this is a largely a labour of love. There are no millions to be made in such an activity. But it could surely help promote language and tradition in distant communities. If anyone has such scripts, which you might be willing to share (moral rights of the author will definitely be protected and promoted), then please let everyone know via goa...@goanet.org FN Frederick Noronha :: +91-9822122436 :: +91-832-2409490 Meet me on Twitter @fn http://twitter.com/fn --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Japanese Food in Goa
Dear friends, I am a fan of Pan Asian Bowl in Miramar. Close to home, it also delivers very promptly, and my whole household appreciates its food very much. However, the Japanese food on offer at the current festival is not very good at all. The chef is not from Japan, and his food might vaguely resembles Japanese food, but it does not taste like it at all. Extremely disappointing. If you have ever had Japanese food before, Pan Asian Bowl's version is going to let you down badly. But there is real Japanese food in Goa after all, you just have to go to Sakana Restaurant in Vagator, easily one of the most impressive new restaurants (it's a couple years old) in Goa. It is run by a Japanese woman and her (Israeli, of Indian descent) husband, and is quite shockingly good: sushi, yakitori, home-made udon, real miso. I highly recommend it. [Goanet] Parrikars tears and Misquitas' Hypocracy
All Goans today are sad and woke up to the heartrending and shocking news of our dear Mathanys' death. Along with Parrikar who was shown on local television networks genuinely shedding tears for his dear colleague Mathany, I am sure many others in both the BJP as well as Congress and other parties also have felt the great loss of a leader of his stature. What I cannot understand is that Wilfred Misquita who is holding some important position in the BJP uses the death of our great leader to gain political mileage and malign the name of Congress party. He made a statement during the condolence meet which is recorded on television that Mathany was against Congress because of corruption !! Please mister Misquita stop fooling the public at least during a condolence meet like this. [Goanet] Goa ranks third in per capita deposits -yet talk of doles in elections manifestos
PANAJI, MARCH 21: Goa ranks third nationally as far as per capita deposits are concerned, outsmarted only by the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh, according to a recent Economic Survey. The record mentions that the per capita deposits of Delhi stand at Rs 3.16 lakh, seconded by Chandigarh at Rs 2.32 lakh, and followed by Goa at Rs 1.72 lakh, the Survey, which was tabled on the floor of the House, read. The Survey said the aggregate deposits registered phenomenal growth from Rs 9 crore in 1962, a year after liberation from Portuguese rule, to Rs 26,045 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 34,165 crore in 2010-11. “As on September 2011, the total bank deposits stood at Rs 40,617 crore,” the Survey mentions, adding that bank deposits have seen an increasing trend over the last few years. The bank deposits, the Survey says, saw an enormous rise in 2000-01 over 1995-96, wherein the growth recorded is approximately 127 per cent. “However, as investors became more familiar with new investment avenues, the annual growth rate of deposits reduced to 13 per cent in year 2009-10,” it said. “Subsequently in 2010-11, the growth rate went up to 16 per cent,” the report adds. Goa had 586 banking offices as on September 30, 2011. The ES points out that there is bank branch for approximately every 2,500 people in Goa, taking into account the population of the State. Goa is the only State with a low ratio of 4,148 population per bank branch, while all the other States and Union Territories have a ratio of above 5,000 population per branch. “This shows that Goa has the best banking services compared to all the other States and Union Territories in the country,” the Survey reads. http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/article3019899.ece?homepage=trueref=wl_home --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Lighting the Way for a Century
Lighting the Way for a Century By Bharati Pawaskar A landmark in the heart of downtown Madgaum – Gomant Vidya Niketan ( GVN) stands tall with its unshaken values and principles laid strongly in the foundation. For the past 100 years it has worked as a catalyst that helped to bind the classes in pre- liberation era and educate the masses in the post- liberation period. GVN chose knowledge to be its path that led to educating the masses in pre- liberation era. An institute where values have always superseded personal agendas or vested interests, this century- old lighthouse is the pride Goa. Established on the auspicious day of Gudhi Padwa – March 19, 1912 as Saraswat Brahman Samaj, it was later renamed as GVN on 16- 03- 1961. Inspired by the liberal thinking, the makers of GVN rightly accepted the social obligation of shaping the mindset of the people of Goa. Though the initial name of GVN – Sawaswat Brahman Samaj had mention of caste in it, the organisation did not have any caste connotations. Post- liberation GVN did the spade work in spreading ‘ pro- bahujan samaj’ message to all parts of the state. Simplistic scholars like Yashwant Suryaji Sardessai, Bhikaji Purushottam Pai Bhale, Kashinath Damodar Nayak, Keshav Anant Nayak, Sadashiv Vasudev Kenkre, Govind Sakharam Panandikar, Ramchandra Vyankatesh Nayak, Ramakrishna Narayan Bale and Keshav Krishna Nayak – the founders of GVN were patriots par excellence and although they did not participate in the freedom struggle directly, they indirectly supported it by providing a forum for patriotic thoughts in overall progressive framework of social philosophy. Today their rich legacy is carried forward by their next generation who shares the same bond of dedication, devotion and responsibility with this organisation, at times, leaving no stone unturned to contribute their bit. In its fruitful journey of 100 years GVN has evolved as a pioneering organisation that has contributed immensely in bringing the social awakening among the people of Goa. After Portugal was declared a Republic in 1910, Goa gained some social, cultural and religious freedom. It was during those times that this organisation gradually began its soulful activity of soothing the battered minds and bonding the fragmented society, taking lead in guiding all towards a common goal. By inviting men of letters from all over India to deliver speeches, GVN, delivered the right message to society. It began the spadework of igniting the Goan minds and making people aware of what was happening outside Goa. It tried to narrow the gaps between classes and masses by spreading knowledge. It worked towards the eradication of casteism, untouchability and strived for the spread of women education. Cultural activities started flourishing with plays, dramas, musical concerts, classical singing, ‘ bhajans’ and ‘ pravachans’ taking forefront. The members and associates of GVN shared progressive ideology thus creating a platform for like minded groups to perform and interact. GVN marched ahead working as a centre of knowledge with its public library, reference section and book publication cell, arranging literary talks and lectures of scholars. It was in 1930 that GVN supported the 15th Maharashtra Marathi Sahitya Sammelan under the presidentship of Vaman Malhar Joshi. Eventually the old structure was replaced and given a sophisticated look in 1930 which later again went a facelift to be the present centrally located modern building at the same venue in 1968 with a library, reference section, reading room, and a sophisticated AC auditorium. The building is under renovation again this year with an expenditure of Rs 6 crores with generous donations pouring in from people of all walks of society. Well- wishers like Suresh Kare extended support with handsome amount of Rs one crore, Avadhoot Timblo Rs 75 lakh, Nana Bandekar Rs 30 lakh and many more. The government of Goa has also donated Rs 35 lakh for the renovation. The GVN building with the makeover will be inaugurated at the hands of Gomant Vibhushan Dr Raghunath Mashelkar on August 12, 2012. On its 60th anniversary GVN had organised ‘ Samajik Parishad’ but later this tradition was disrupted. Now this tradition will be revived and held every alternate year wherein socio- cultural issues would be addressed. With 100 golden years inscribed in its history, GVN has chalked out a broad based plan, taking all sections of the community with it to work on an all Goa level. Soon after the centenary celebrations a get- together for office- bearers of all cultural- social institutes will be held to create a common forum to chart it. http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=3993boxid=11934421uid=dat=3%2f22%2f2012 Goanet News Service www.goanet.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty

[Goanet] Matanhy - the irony
Yesterday OHeraldo carried an advertisement from the Shack Owners Welfare Society congratulating Matanhy Saldanha on getting a ministerial post. It said, Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours and may God bless you with good health to serve the people of Goa. Did God really bless him by taking him away and not letting him ruin the reputation he had earned as a ceaseless, fearless fighter for social justice if he had lived and not been able to fulfill the promise of keeping Goa from further destruction? Didn't he lose the fight to get River Princess out of its place of resting during his first tenure as tourism minister? Would be able to take on the might mining and hotel lobbies to clean the environment and the beaches? It's a different ball game to fight against the mining lords and the government decisions that the people didn't like than doing things in an official capacity, such as bringing in new laws or making amendments to existing ones regarding environment, mining, etc, as it bring the government into direct clash with the powerful lobbies. As Teotonio de Souza said, I believe that god saved him from Goan democracy!, I believe Matanhy would have been consumed alive fighting the evil forces. Check what is happening with Mamta Banerjee and contrast her role as an activist and now as chief minister of Bengal. Activists such as Matanhy have fire in their bellies. Once these fired-breathing activists go on to the other side of governing, they often get caught in bureaucratic muddles and the hard realities of governance. As a deeply religious man, Matanhy had probably left his fate in God's hand. He couldn't cheat death. As one report quoted a wailing fisherwoman asking God why He didn't let Matanhy live at least for another year, the answer to her question will never be known. Matanhy himself would have said, Don't cry for me, Goa. [Goanet] Matanhy's work must be recognised
What a reality it is to read that a man who gave his sweat, blood and life for Goans lived in an apartment while the man who made crores of money by depriving the state's exchequer lives in a huge mansion in Taleigao. yeah, one lives in a palace and the other lived in an attic. What contrasting lifestyles between the two. That's the world of difference between Matanhy Saldanha and Anastacio Babush Monserrate. Just a thought worth pondering on a day when the newspapers are filled with stories of Mathany's life and his struggles with government and big industries. In my piece, which appeared inthe editoiral page of today's OHeraldo, I have said that Matanhy was a beacon of hope that blinks no more. Unlike Monserrate who, if given the chance again, would loot the state. I think the BJP government must name the Zuari Bridge as Matanhy Saldanha bridge as it would remind all those who pass on it of the great services rendered by this noble son of Goa. It would be a ftting tribute as Cortalim was Matanhy's constituency. If not that, at least a statue of this fearless activiist at the junction of Cortalim. That's one way of remembering him. However, Mathany would have preferred to be remembered by carrying on his struggle to preserve Goa's heritage and environment. The fight is long and it would need another ten Matanhys to rise up from the Goan soil to ensure Goa lives up to Matanhy's dream. His biggest dream was to have Special Status and he promised to work for it. The government would do justice to Mathany's work if it sets up an award for voluntary work in the field of environment. It would be rightful recognition to the tireless efforts by this valiant fighter to bring social justice in the land. [Goanet] Modernism in Music: Naresh Fernandes's epic Taj Mahal Foxtrot
Dear Friends, Attached below is an unusually fine and perceptive review of Naresh Fernandes's groundbreaking cultural history 'Taj Mahal Foxtrot: The Story of Bombay's Jazz Age' by Vijay Prashad. Naresh is making a presentation of his work at Sunaparanta, in Panjim, tomorrow evening at 7pm, followed by some music played by Colin D'Cruz and his band. I urge everyone who can make it to be there. 'Taj Mahal Foxtrot' is the result of more than two decades of painstaking research, and pieces together an amazing story that has remained largely unknown until now. Many of the musicians Naresh writes about functioned as another crucial stream of the invisible river (as described by Ranjit Hoskote) of Goan artistic pioneers who gave shape and expression to India's cultural aspirations all through the 20th century. Naresh's analysis certainly dovetails entirely with my own findings about the outstanding early modernists of Goan art (as cited at length in the Seminar essay circulated earlier.) Best regards, VM --- http://www.frontline.in/stories/20120406290607300.htm The Indian jazz age VIJAY PRASHAD A history of jazz from the point of view of the performers, musicians who lived humble lives and often died as unknown workers in the trade. AT the heart of Naresh Fernandes' Taj Mahal Foxtrot are the ordinary musicians who worked for long hours in the ballrooms of five-star hotels and in the nightclubs of major Indian cities. As nationalism swept the country, these venues became the refuge of the European and Indian elite, the aristocrats, the moneyed and the public servants. It was not as if they were oblivious to the changes afoot in the country. They had to deal with the threats and the opportunities posed by Indian nationalism every day. They came to hear jazz in the night time, when they left their cares behind and came to dance and drink. In solidarity with the naval mutiny in 1945, masses of people took to the streets of Bombay (now Mumbai). The police opened fire on them and killed several. The journalist Dosoo Framjee Karaka wrote two years later: “That weekend in the ballroom of the Taj Mahal Hotel, Sonny Lobo and his orchestra played as usual and the dancers encored a new Calypso number. No one was perturbed about the firing in the city because skirmishes like these had become a normal feature of Indian life” ( I've Shed My Tears, 1947). For years I had read this comment for its irony. In the previous page, Karaka had described going to the horse races at Mahalaxmi. The Governor of Bombay, the Scottish Liberal John Colville, arrived in a “gilded, horse-drawn carriage with an escort of bodyguards and flunkies in attendance”. He arrived “in state as in the days before the War”. The horses ran, Sonny Lobo played on and a “beggar boy” lay dead on the streets “with Jai Hind on his lips”. Karaka, who offers Fernandes some of his best vignettes, is not drawing the obvious comparison that the colonial elite played the fiddle while Rome burned. The colonial elite did not know how to play the fiddle. They either imported that talent from Europe or the United States, or else from the Portuguese colony of Goa and from the world of “Anglo-India” (the community of Indians who had some European ancestry). Fernandes sets aside the carousing on the dance floor and in the dining area. This is not his domain. That was the interest of colonial administrators such as David Kincaid (who wrote British Social Life in India, 1608-1937). Fernandes is interested in those on the bandstand and in the music they played. Who were these performers, and what inventiveness did they bring to their work? A history of jazz from the point of the view of the performers is not a history of the elites who would have danced to it; it is the history of the musicians who came from humble backgrounds, lived humble lives and often died as unknown workers in the music trade. The first set of musicians who came to these hotels and clubs in the 1930s left Jim Crow America for more salubrious climates. Some went to Europe after the First World War and built their jazz careers in what the late scholar William Shack called “Harlem in Montmartre” (in his 2001 book of that name). Bandleader James Reese Europe and dancer Josephine Baker formed the heart of this enclave of Paris, which thrived until the 1930s when the rise of fascism made life harder for black artists. Trumpet player Buck Clayton, from Kansas City and soon to be a regular with the Count Basie Orchestra, built his career in the ballrooms and small clubs of Shanghai. From Paris and Shanghai, and from New York and Kansas City, black musicians found their way to Bombay and Calcutta (now Kolkata), bringing their bands, and pushing against the staid ballroom sounds of the brass and military bands (one article from 1913 extolled the regimental band for its “daily programmes of light and lively music” which “acted as a wholesome tonic to the community”). The musicians did not thrill

[Goanet] O Sahiba, Once More
*Once popular, folk music of Goa gets a fresh introduction at NCPA’s ongoing Living Traditions series* In the ’70s, Miguel and Lisette Cotta were music teachers, and for many years before that, they entertained Goan audiences by singing popular folk songs. After their children, Franz Schubert — named after the famous Austrian composer, and Chantale Marie Cotta, were old enough, the entire family began performing on a Portuguese variety programme called Renascenca on All India Radio in the ’80s. This programme was discontinued in the mid-90s and the family then moved to playing regularly at five-star hotels.* *** Ever since, despite the demand for Goan folk music steadily decreasing even at traditional occasions such as weddings, the Cottas — perhaps currently the best known musical family in Goa—have kept the music alive. On Thursday, the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Nariman Point, brings them to Mumbai for the second evening of Living Traditions 2012: Goa Gala and their first performance in the city. The Cottas will perform a number of traditional Konkani songs. Their focus, however, will be on the Mando where Konkani songs are set to Latin-American tunes. On Wednesday evening, Sonia Shirsat inaugurated the Goa Gala event with Fado — a genre that can be traced back to the 19th century Portugal. “Fado is semi-classical in nature, one that I’d compare to Hindi ghazals,” says Shirsat. The 32-year-old first sang Fado in 2003, but is now one of the only and best known ‘fadistas’ in India. Nearly three decades ago, Goan folk music was popular at restaurants, hotels and weddings in Goa. Goan music has also been used in a number of Hindi films. For instance, the song Na mangun sona chandi from the 1973 film Bobby is an adaptation of Dekhni — a traditional Goan art form that combines song and dance. The incredibly popular Eena meena deeka from the 1957 film Aasha also has elements of Goan music in it. However, in recent years, Goan folk has seen a decline. “These days everyone is into popular music, so it has become very rare to see places that play folk music,” says Franz. He says there have been small attempts to revive folk music, but these are few and far between. Fado has enjoyed more popularity in recent times. For instance, a restaurant in the Cidade de Goa hotel has a Fado night every month. “Fado is now making waves in the West and with some competitions in Goa, it’s making a comeback here too,” says Shirsat, adding, “There is experimentation. That’s good as long as it doesn’t take away from the flavour of the genre.” Dr Suvarnalata Rao, programming head, Indian music at the NCPA, believes folk music still has its audience. “It is alive in small pockets in Goa, but having said that, it is also evolving everyday so some of the repertoire is lost,” she says. Of Goa Gala at the NCPA, she says the idea is to familiarise people with not just the music, but the music as a part of the city’s cultural identity. “We will also have introductions to the events, talking about the influence of Portuguese culture,” she concludes ** ** ** http://www.indianexpress.com/news/O-Sahiba--Once-More/926719/ ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
[Goanet] Wanted: tiatr scripts...
Interesting the hypocrisy of those who were not just criticizing Matanhy for his recent political moves but personally vilified him, yet they now are singing his praises. Of course, INTEGRITY is not in full supply in the Goan world (actually in short supply). But that aside, some mourn the loss of an activist. [Goanet] Remmie Colaco RIP
Oh God, give us a break. We haven't overcome yet the loss of Matanhy and now new sorrows have been added in the passing away of another notable Goan, Remmie Colaco. Two Goans belonging to two different fields -- one in social activism and politics and the other cultural. Each shared a different stage. One carried his passion for bringing justice to the downtrodden, the helpless and the exploited, while the other brought laughter and soothing melodies and duets. Remmie Colaco will be remembered for his songs that touched on the social aspects of Goans and his lyrical duets. Along with M. Boyer and Jacinto Vaz, known as the Big Three of Saxtti, they brought the house down will their comedy, razor-sharp (zopatti) on political affairs, and lyrical melodies. Some of his duets with Boyer and with C. Alvares are enlightening as well as catchy, surving till today as fine compositions. During this season of Lent, his song, Ankvar Moriechem Dukh, is one to hear. If Our Lady's sorrow is what the dukh song emphazied, then Cheddum Cheddeachem Sukh, spoke glowingly of a woman's beauty. His songs devoted to love and marriage, such as Kazar Borem and Satvo Sacrament, provides sane advice to young women. In the mother-daughter-in-law affair (Mai-Sun), he has strong words for those men who take up the wife's side. In these trying times when Goans are full of anxiety and apprehension at what is happening to their homeland Remmie has a telling message for Goans in Sudarop. He praises Goa's development but sounds a warning that such development attracts migrants. He calls upon Goans to keep faith in the land and not abandon the state by moving away. At a rough estimate, Remmie must have composed at least 400 songs in his long career, since he made his debut in a amateur tiatr, Bhaguintlem Ful (he has a song by that name) as a youngster playing a female role. Then came Maim, also a small role as a female. It was in 1944, and later in the same year C. Alvares got him to act in Tor Ho Tiarist? Jacinto was first to go, then Boyer and now Remmie. Many of us who grew up watching and listening to these kingpins of the Konkani stage may not see the likes of them, at least in my lifetime. Some of the trios that we see now or seen over the last decade or so don't match the grace and the composure of these three. They, along with some who have gone to their heavenly abode, belonged to the Golden Age of the tiatr. I saw him many times on stage, playing character roles and singing. Enjoyed his company, especially he and Boyer talking of their friendship and relating anecdotes behind the stage. Besides his singing and acting, I will remember him for his unique laughter, somewhat suppressed, just as he would hold his laughter on stage whenever he engaged himself with Boyer or Jacinto or when the latter two engaged themselves in a tit-for-tat dialogues. His melody will linger on as long as the Konkani stage is alive and kicking. [Goanet] 'Coalgate': Govt releases bits of CAG letter to deny TOI report
NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday sought to play down this paper's report of March 22 which stated that the Comptroller and Auditor Generalhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Comptroller-and-Auditor-General had estimated in its 110-page draft report that the coal ministry's decision to award 155 coal acreages without competitive bidding had led to undue benefits of Rs 10.67 lakh crore to private and public firms. With the report creating a storm in Parliament, leading to adjournment of both Houses, thePrime Minister's Officehttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Prime-Minister's-Office issued a press release quoting from a letter the Prime Minister received from the CAG, Vinod Rai http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Vinod-Rai, at 1.30pm. The release quotes just one paragraph from Rai's three-page letter - that too only in part - to say the details being brought out were observations which are under discussion at a very preliminary stage and do not even constitute our pre-final draft and hence are exceedingly misleading... In fact, it is not even our case that the unintended benefit to the allocatee is an equivalent loss to the exchequer. The leak of the initial draft causes great embarrassment as the Audit Report is still under preparation. Such leakages cause very deep anguish. Officials in the PMO declined to release the CAG's full letter, but later in the day, TOI was able to access a copy of the original. It starts by saying, Naturally leakage of this draft report may attract an allegation that the 'CAG leaks'. It would console me immensely if the source of the leak is investigated... As I had stressed earlier in my letter to you on July 5, 2011, I am not in a position to repudiate such an allegation as the leak could have been from my office or from the department to which this draft report was made available on 28.02.2012. The department being referred to is the coal ministry. [Goanet] For Christians, the sun is rising in the east
Father Raymond J. de Souza: For Christians, the sun is rising in the east Father Raymond J. de Souza Mar 22, 2012 On Monday night, I was honoured to host the senior Catholic prelate from India, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, in Mississauga, Ont. On Tuesday morning, a new archbishop — Christian Lépine — was announced for Montreal. In the 21st century, what will be more important for global Christianity — Mumbai and Mississauga, or Montreal? To even ask the question demonstrates how the tectonic plates of the universal Church are shifting. Christians in India are only 2.3% of the total population, Catholics accounting for 1.8%. But as Cardinal Gracias likes to recall, Pope Benedict told him that 1.8% of more than 1 billion people means that the Catholic Church in India is much larger than it is in many European countries. Indeed, there are far more Catholics in India than in Canada. The shape of the Christian church worldwide depends today more on India than on Ireland, and what is going on in Kerala is far more important than whoever is appointed to Canterbury. Irish Catholicism and the Church of England have a noble heritage, but their best days now belong to history. What goes on there bears watching for the sake of the souls, of course, but in terms of providing a creative impetus for the Gospel throughout the world, those islands are exhausted. The island of Montreal is in a similar situation. The appointment of a new archbishop is important for Montreal as a whole, not just its Catholic population. Archbishop Lépine’s appointment to Quebec’s senior ecclesial post, only six months after he was ordained an auxiliary bishop, is a dramatic break with the usual practice. The Holy See evidently thought that the usual practice in Montreal needed to be dramatically broken. It was said of Mackenzie King, our longest-serving prime minister, that he would never take a major decision without first consulting with the archbishop of Montreal, and the president of the Royal Bank. Perhaps apocryphal, the story nevertheless identified the sources of cultural influence in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. That was a long time ago, when Mumbai was still called Bombay, and Mississauga was mostly empty fields. There on Monday, and on Sunday in Brampton, hundreds of Catholics of Indian origin filled parishes to greet Cardinal Gracias. A man who has travelled extensively, the cardinal marvelled at the sheer number of Indians he met on this, his first visit to Canada. It is not only that there are more Catholics at Mass in Bombay’s parishes than there would be in the whole of, say, Belgium. It is that the diaspora is a force right here in Canada. Indian priests — both Indian nationals and the sons of immigrants — are manning many Canadian parishes. And in places like Mississauga, Indians are contributing mightily to the vitality of parish life. At the Mass the cardinal offered at the parish of Saint Francis Xavier — the patron saint of Goa — there were a few visible minorities present in the packed church: the scattered few of European stock. The Indian Church, broadly understood, now includes parts of Mississauga. Cardinal Gracias observed that while Canadian missionaries once went to serve in India, that no longer happens. It’s partly because the Indian government makes it difficult for them to come, and mostly because there are precious few Canadian missionaries. But now India gives what it once received; there are some 10,000 priests, religious brothers and sisters from India serving abroad. At dinner that night, the Minister of Immigration, Jason Kenney, welcomed Cardinal Gracias to Canada, noting that the founding values of Canada — especially the contribution religious communities have made to our common life — are now being reinforced by new Canadians, who are both faithful believers and loyal citizens. The dinner was hosted by Convivium, a new magazine about faith in our common life of which I am the editor-in-chief. Cardinal Gracias was kind enough to say that he was proud that a “son of India” was making this contribution to public life in Canada. Indo-Canadians have every right to be proud, for there are many of us making our own contributions. Cardinal Gracias was in Kingston over the weekend, speaking at our annual dinner for the Catholic chaplaincy at Queen’s University. It was by coincidence St. Patrick’s Day, and this son of Indian immigrants was welcoming the archbishop of Bombay. Some of our guests chided me for overlooking St. Patrick. I was happy to correct that. But that’s the new reality for twenty-first century Christians. The sun has set on Ireland and Europe; it is rising in the east, over India. Re: [Goanet] Feni?
Just mind reading George: what Fred want to see feni being used with stats/as publicity example, a barge carrying ore would equate to 5K bottles of feni (tonnage) or one container of iron ore could buy you equivalent of 200K bottles of feni. Or Fred's little Hero Honda's gas tank can take 4 bottles of feni Did you know a bottle of feni in your Hero Honda can get you from Saligao to Panjim and back half way..that is it can be mixed with a little gas (heaven forbid gas going to $200 a barrel)you know how happy your Mercedez will be with a little mix of feni. I'll leave that to the imagination.it even slows down your speed (no bumpy speed breakers needed). I'll leave you to decide if feni is better as a afrod***c or as fuel for your transport! Cheers. Re: [Goanet] Matanhy - The Activist
Matanhy Saldanha - The last of the idealists - by Edwin Pinto To me, the passing away of Matanhy Saldanha certainly signifies the end of an era for Goa and Goans. For Matanhy, in a manner of speaking, was the last of the idealists - that rare breed of activists who walked a tortuous path through long seasons of uncertainty and turbulence as they struggled with unwavering commitment against a government and a system skilfully configured and heavily weighted against the people and the land. It was during the Anti Meta Strips campaign in the year 2000 that we first came in contact with Matanhy Saldanha. This was one of Goa's more intense convulsions, where the surging anger of the people resulted in head on confrontations between them and an intransigent government who tried to suppress the movement through the use of state machinery. Needless to say, movements of this magnitude certainly do not leave time for genteel nurturing of relationships. We were thrown together - people living in the affected villages around the factory, clueless, but full of good intentions - never, ever envisaging where our campaign would lead us. It was Matanhy who took charge, explaining, encouraging, motivating and guiding us through the various stages of this tumultuous movement and putting steel in our spines when the chips were down. In fact, he led from the front, imbuing a group of ordinary villagers who were total novices to such campaigns, with the unbelievable ability to withstand a thirteen day fast that brought the government of the day to its knees, compelling it to close down the factory, even though it proved later to be a temporary measure. For Matanhy, the land and the environment were sacred community resources, to be used for the collective good. He loved Goa with an intense passion and willingly sacrificed many other dimensions of his life for his beloved motherland. Matanhy did not believe in spit, polish and sophistication. He was a votary of people's empowerment, clearly understanding that any movement, however worthy, which was not fuelled with the energy of people at grassroots level, was bound to experience extreme difficulties in fulfilling its goal. He was therefore driven to shape a community that he hoped would be alert, empowered and vigilant. For he firmly believed that such a community would ultimately form Goa's most impervious defence against the machinations of vested interests. In our very many interactions and discussions with Matanhy, some admittedly heated and tempestuous, we gained an insight into the depths of his personality. He had a enviably sharp intellect, that could analyse any situation thoroughly and grasp its very essence. His world view and understanding of environmental issues, enabled him to come out with quick and well thought out questions and responses to ill considered government policies and laws imposed on the state, that have undoubtedly saved Goa from even worse degradation than that it is experiencing presently. He lived with the courage of his convictions, strongly believing that laws were made for people and not the other way around. Hence he staunchly defended the rights of fishermen to enjoy their traditional habitations within the CRZ zone. Matanhy, more than most, understood the near impossibility of fighting against a state equipped with the might of the system. With limited resources at his command, he relied on his intellect, his sharp understanding of the system's modus operandi, but most of all on the support of the ordinary people, whose roots in the land he believed, gave them a better feeling and perspective of the problems. He understood how important it was for a community to preserve its special identity, even as it fused with the peoples who made up the rest of the nation Even when most of us at some stage got caught up in the problems and situations of our own lives, we could always rest in the assurance that Matanhy was always on the job, unceasingly watchful, always on guard as he looked out for his beloved Goa and Goans. Right from the early days of the legendary Ramponkar's Movement that toppled a mighty government, to the Konkan Railway, SEZ, and any major environmental issue that rocked Goa, Matanhy was a household name - synonymous with Goa and Goan issues. It is indeed a tragic irony of fate that he won this election, was given charge of Ministries close to his heart in a Government that was unhampered by the constraints of coalition politics, only to be called away before fulfilling his destiny. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
[Goanet] Is Kingfisher Airlines busting?
Is Kingfisher Airlines busting? Almost everyday, the airline making ‘not so good’ news. Just two days ago, I read ‘all international flights are cancelled effective 25th March 2012. Next day, I checked it’s booking site, trying to book a return ticket form 29th March, seats were available as normal. A friend of mine also leaving Goa on 28th March but he has his return sector okayed or confirmed just two day ago with just an a/c changes at Bombay (to Delhi) Going by the news reports, it looks like the airline will be soon winding up it’s operations unless some miracles happen.
