[Goanet] Goa's CM flies the way you and I do
While returning to Delhi from Goa yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to find the chief minister of Goa, BJP's Manohar Parrikar, on the same flight. No, this isn't the first time I was on board with a CM, a senior minister or a politician. But what I saw - right from the time he boarded the aircraft till the moment he exited the airport building at New Delhi - impressed me so much that it has stayed with me till now and has made me write this piece. I tried to remember when was the last time I saw a CM or a senior political leader of Mr Parrikar's stature queuing up like a common man to board a flight. No flunkeys, no security, no attendant, carrying his own luggage - and he was flying economy on a low-cost carrier, not first-class on a full services airline. He wasn't the last to enter the flight nor was the flight held up for him to arrive. (Photo: CM) He walked into the Go Air aircraft like any average passenger, almost unnoticed, and well in time. Like everyone else, he queued at the gate, boarded the bus, and climbed into the plane when his turn came. He didn't sit in the first row which has become the exclusive preserve of the high and mighty on flights that have no first class. He quietly slipped into row three (or was it row four) and sat there without any fuss. I think most people on the aircraft didn't realise who he was and therefore no attempt was made to mob him or try and catch his attention. The cabin crew spent no more time attending to him than they did to any other passenger. When I shared this with a colleague who was travelling with me, he said, I am sure the airline would have left the seat next to him unoccupied or his office would have booked two seats so that he is not disturbed. But when I went to attend to nature's call, I realised on my way back that this was not the case. All seats in his row were occupied and absolutely no special privilege seemed to have either been demanded or offered. Yes, he did have an aisle seat - as did two people in every row. When the flight landed in Delhi, he wasn't the first to get off it. Usually, it is only when the VIP is ushered into a special car waiting for him at the tarmac (with a suitable red light mounted on the roof of the car), that the other passengers are allowed to deplane. In this case, neither was he the first to disembark, nor was there a car waiting. Nobody came to receive him on the tarmac and he boarded the same bus which took all other passengers to the airport terminal. Again, he carried his own luggage (two pieces) right up to the car which came to fetch him. While in the bus, a couple of co-passengers did recognise him and began to chat with him. The conversation which followed left me in no doubt that he was not just a gentleman but very understated in his demeanour. Dressed in a simple but formal shirt and trousers and black sandals, he didn't look or sound like a typical politician. Having worked in the news business for a while, I did know that he is the first IIT-ian to head a state government in India. I had also heard that he was trying to clean up the murky world of Goa politics. But what I observed first-hand left me pleasantly surprised. I am not a resident of Goa and therefore not in a position to cast my vote for Mr Parrikar - in a political sense. But purely from a personal standpoint, he has my vote for the kind of person he seems to be. I had gone to Goa to attend the Network18 Leadership Meet and I learned my last lesson of leadership this weekend watching Mr Parrikar from a distance. Mr Parrikar, take a bow! [Goanet] Caste and Assolna
Mervyn Lobo wrote: Your views on the caste system are well known. The above quotes of yours also give the reader some indication on how much thought and research you take into consideration before making your fantasy statements. I really look forward to reading the results of your er, unbiased views on caste and Assolna. RESPONSE: Tut, tut, looks like Mervyn's feathers have been ruffled. Bullies can usually dish it out but seldom take it when someone stands up to to them. Who said I was researching caste or even Assolna? Please direct me to that post. It's just like you, to make assumptions and then foist those assumptions as facts. If you must know I was looking for a person. And if a person belonged to a certain caste in the early 20th century, there is a good chance he'll be listed in certain confrariars. I was more likely to find him in certain areas/professions and the people in that village would likely know him as a certain someone related to some family of the same caste. This is how geneology searches take place. I have better things to do than be bored to death by the mundanity, triviality and inanity of your thought processes. I have kept quiet for a long time, hoping that in time whatever is bothering you will have resolved or gone into remission but some people have an incessant need to nurse their egos with their imagined hurts. And the more one keeps quiet in the hope of maintaining peace on public forums the more virulent people these people become. Selma

[Goanet] The Caste System in Goa and Beyond (by Rose Fernandes)
Dear goanet readers Having just returned home from a weekend of wining, dining and champagne sundowners, my weekend was extended to another enjoyable day musing on goanet posts (over strong black coffee and a slice of dodol) especially those on the caste system. When goanet postings mentioned Catholicism and the caste system, my mind reflected on the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John recording the birth, life and death of Christ. The website www.jesuscentral.com shows the structure of the community in which Christ lived and it is, surprisingly, very similar to that of our caste system embedded in the culture of our community. Quote: During the time of Christ, there was a very large disparity between rich and poor. The upper class was made up of the temple priests and priestly aristocracy (including the Sadducees – a Jewish sect), The middle class was comprised of traders and merchants, artisans (stonecutters, masons, sculptors) and craftsman (metal, wood, cloth dye). The Pharisees (another Jewish sect), sages, scribes, and teachers were also a part of the middle class. The lower class was made of laborers (weavers, stone carriers, slaves (non-Jewish person taken into slavery because of debt), and the unemployable (lepers, blind, insane, crippled, etc.). Unquote As followers of Christ, we can learn from him the way he dealt with such prejudices. Firstly, he chose a number of those nearest to him, his disciples, from fishermen and not from the most learned in the land. Secondly, he addressed behavioural differences between the upper and lower classes through his parables (as we are constantly reminded at daily mass readings) and through his recorded reactions to the various incidents in his life. That is not all. Perhaps the greatest lessons we can learn from Christ is how he faced and dealt with the huge challenges from the leaders of the time (the upper class) as well as how he faced and dealt with huge challenges from his disciples (most from the lower class), the most challenging being with Peter on whom he built his church. Many of us, including myself, dearly wish that the inherited caste system had never existed among us at all but if it is continuing we definitely need to work collectively to root it out and ensure that it flows out of our lives into the Mandovi River right now. There is no place for it in our community any more or any reason whatsoever for it to continue. Unfortunately, the residue of the prolonged practice of the caste system by our ancestors shows up in the behavioural differences that exist among us today. However, instead of continually bleating about it, let us rise above these differences and move on. We can either continue to be a slave to this system or set ourselves free. [Goanet] And then [he/she] said to me, 'Your English is very good!'
Accents matter. In case, that was hard to understand, allow me to give a personal example. I speak English with an Indian recent (though people assure me its less pronounced; hardly--this that and the other). Whatever?! The point though is that very few are keen on having their nationals speak English with an Indian accent, as Indian do (inflections), stc., (you know). Indian - do (decide/categorize on what your accent is). Its truly that simple, and countries have a choice to choose their teachers. We can call them ignorant or whatever but they get to decide what they want. You/We on the other hand get to get up in arms, vent and get spent. Also there is nothing categorical, defined, or definitive in anyone saying: And then [he/she] said to me, 'Your English is very good!.' When that happens pat yourself on the back if you must, and then move on. More than likely it could have have been a don of English, and equally someone fascinated that you can string words together equally better as them, or better than them. venantius j pinto

[Goanet] Parivatan is coming: be scared., be very scared
Goanetters, Goebells again and thank you soterbab for your latest post. Keep writing in the same vein.No Parivartan there. In the meantime, my boss 'Hitler' suspended licenses of 460 iron ore traders and gave them two weeks to re-apply. Surprise, surprise! Onlt 40% have applied.(see news below). This means 274 traders, mostly illegal have been stopped from engaging in illegal mining trade. My advice to them: Be scared. The state government had suspended licences of all the 460 odd iron ore traders and made them file fresh applications, in a bid to curb illegal iron ore mining. Mines and Geology Director Prasanna Acharya said the department has received applications only from 186 traders. Justice M B Shah Commission which enquired into illegal mining in the state had pointed out that traders were an important loop that needs to be tackled to curb illegal mining activity. Several traders were working with fake postal addresses and the department was finding it difficult to put a check on them. Initiating a clean-up operation after taking over the reign, Chief minister Manohar Parrikar had suspended all 460 licences of traders and asked them to apply again with proper documents including copies of their contract with mining lease holders.

Re: [Goanet] Caste and Assolna - and ?????
(a) jc APRIL 12, 2012: It (The 'Caste' nonsense) has done enough of havoc in East Africa (inter alia, pl read Ben Antao's The tailor's daughter). (b) Bosco APRIL 15, 2012: I believe Ben's novel infers on the theatrics of upper caste men in Goa (not East Africa) vis-a-vis lower caste women. (c) Roland APRIL 15, 2012: Well and truly said Bosco. (d) Roland APRIL 16, 2012: G2 was convincing us based on Ben Antao's fictitious book that Goans went there TO ESCAPE the caste system. Busted, G2! COMMENT: Dear Herr Goebel, I accept that, of late, some of us have been having a tough time debating with those who read and review before scripting a post. It is something that one is forced to get used to in grad school. Even so, while some of us follow that discipline after leaving 'school', others, regrettably, do not. The latter, often, tend to CONJURE UP stuff to suit their own pre-judged views of others. It matters little that they do NOT really know the 'other' even marginally well enough to comment; but comment they do. Hence, the need for triumphant Goebelization. For instance, WHERE did jc state/infer/impute/dream ...that Goans went (to Africa) there TO ESCAPE the caste system? I always believed (and still do) that Goans (like many other folks) migrated (or joined the merchant navy) for better economic prospects. They still do IMHO. Now here, particularly for Bosco's attention, is Ben's own excerpt (from his NOVEL). I believe that (as almost always) the facts speak for themselves. http://www.chapterandverse.ca/book-excerpts/108-the-tailors-daughter.html Eliza knew that Goan tailors prospered wherever they worked, although in the larger Goan community their social status was low for they were victims of caste discrimination. No matter where they settled, their caste followed them, and Eliza’s parents had always been treated as inferior beings in Nairobi, even though they were successful tailors. With the best of wishes, as always jc sub-sub-Harijan/Kunbi + lower than the lowest.

[Goanet] Partida…Largada…Corrida! (On Your Mark... Get Set... Go! by Anita Pinto)
An Anita Pinto short story from Goa (in Portuguese). Translated by Maria Inês Figueira More at http://groups.google.com/group/learn-portuguese-goa Partida…Largada…Corrida!
