Pl note in the first two posts above it is very clear that Sandesh is
speaking out against the CHURCH. Yet Santosh deliberately and with mischief
and maliciousness with the intention of maligning and smearing the CSF is
falsely misrepresenting Sandesh's post with the falsehood that he was

I hope Santosh will stop embarassing himself and accept with honesty and

[Goanet] P O cruise ship staff paid basic salary of 75 pence an hour.

2012-05-01 Thread Venantius J Pinto
These cruise companies are serious c***suckers.
They all have rules slightly different from one another BUT all of them are
feudal and worse(???).

Some allow them to take all their tips, others attach it to performance.
These companies are bastards. For the hours they put in and for the
expectation of tips that is the true salary, WHY would they SLACK.

It gets so weird, that there are older waiters from certain countries who
can barely walk, but interestingly the customers take pity on them and hand
them tips while often avoiding tips to the strapping lads. This has also
got to do with the idea that they are phasing out tips, and shit like that.

There are cases in some companies where even if via courtesy of a boss from
a western country — that one of ours is allowed to sit for the Bartenders
Exam, our shitheads, and yes usually a South India gets ballistic as how
said person was allowed to sit for the exam and that the person now has a
certificate. (NOTE: Do not question this SIndian bit, much in the way all
that crap about Goa is a part of India and everyone has a free STAKE in
it).

They constantly have to deal with reverse questions like: You would not
have a matchbox would you, and worse, instead of May I have a matchbox, etc.

Constant confusion between a demand and a request, and so forth. And we
love to say we speak the Queens English. Wake up.

A few new ones.
I learnt recently that we would not be allowed to visit a relative on board
the ship because we were not family. We were only his cousins. Imagine our
Goans having first family as in wives, children living in New York and at
those salaries. They talk out of their arses, BUT we Indians are getting
there too.

Now their salaries will be deposited directly in a bank here. To do wire
transfer it will cost them. Earlier they did their own thing through
Transfast, etc.

They will not be allowed to cut each others hair. But pay about $20 to have
it cut at the saloon. Yes on those salaries. As usual, to do with
sanitation. If caught then straight passage home. For all we know that too
may be deducted.

and so on and so forth.

PANJIM: Former tourism minister Matanhy Saldanha’s wife, Alina, on Monday
joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is tipped to be the party candidate for
forthcoming Cortalim by-election.
Party sources have confirmed that Alina would be inducted in the state cabinet
on May 6, two days after Goa Governor B V Wancho takes the charge.
Sources said that the party is waiting for new Governor to take charge on May
4, after which Alina would be sworn in as a minister.
Earlier this evening, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar along with BJP Goa Chief
Laxmikant Parsekar welcomed Alina in the party fold, in the presence of huge
supporters from Cortalim.
Saldanha who was inducted in Parrikar-led cabinet had died within a fortnight
of being swearing in as Minister on March 9 after suffering massive cardiac
arrest.
Talking to reporters soon after joining the party, Alina said ‘I promise the
people of Cortalim and Goa that I will work hard and try my best to fulfill the
promises made in the election manifesto of Matanhy’.
Alina, who had announced her wish to contest the by-polls soon after the death
of her husband, said that the electorate of Cortalim will help her clinch
victory at the by-poll scheduled on June 2.
“I am sure that party will retain its seat,” she added.
When asked, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that government has been
working towards fulfilling Matanhy’s dream of special status to Goa. “Everyone
likes special status. It is not in our hand. We will lobby with the centre to
get the status,” he said.

[Goanet] Hitting the RESET button

2012-05-01 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

This entire Mopa kerfuffle can be distilled into the following question:

What kind of Goa do you want for the foreseeable future?

To me, it is deeply distressing that Manohar appears to be taking a direction
that is harmful to Goa.  Let me be clear:  I do not question his motives.  He
wants to do good (I think).  I just get the overpowering feeling that he is
wrong
in the plans he has for the state.

What is required right now for Goa is to hit the RESET button, and take
stock about where we are and where we want to go.  When I read about
remarks made by his ministers about wanting to build this and that,
about wanting to make everything attractive so that tourists may come
in, and so on, it is very troubling.

Don't we have enough tourists already?  And why is EVERYTHING tailored
towards tourists?  What about the life locals have to lead?  Or is every
corner of Goa going to be turned into a tourist playground?

Has there been a reckoning of Goa's capacity for tourists and their effects?
That would not run afoul of the ordinary citizen's life?  That would not put
undue pressure on local resources as well as on the environment?  Are
we forever going to live with Baga and Calangute serving as bathrooms
for visiting uncouth Indians?

What is the rationale for this unhealthy desire to increase tourism?  Aren't
we already saturated?

My hope was that Manohar would turn a new leaf and that 'devlopment'
(deliberately
misspelt) would mean something other than land and concrete.  I am not
so sure given what has been on display thus far.  In a recent email
correspondence, Professor Nandkumar Kamat informed me that only
42,000 hectares of Goan land remain open now for any kind of spatial
planning.  That's just 420 sq kms.  We are running that low on our most
precious resource - land.

Shouldn't Goa be hitting the RESET button?

Manohar-bab, are you listening?

Dear Rajan-bab,

You might have been a bit too late.
Out of the blue I decided to put in a call to Dr. Marconi, the close
confidant of Alina and the leader of Matanhy's core group.

He informs me that Alina has signed on the dotted lines of the BJP
membership form yesterday and has also talked to the Press about her views
on MOPA and DABOLIM.

He also tells me that Manohar Parrikar has also made his views on MOPA and
DABOLIM clear to the press.

At this moment I do not have the papers with me to check out these views.

However, I have told Dr. Marconi the follwing:

1. That the only reason for MOPA not figuring in the BJP's Manifesto 2012
for Goa is because Matanhy did not want it there.
2. That the Navy will bulldoz its way to get complete control of Dabolim
Airport once MOPA starts Civilian operation, 100 per cent.
3. That the Navy refuses to go to Karwar Sea Bird Base and wants Goa
exclusively along with the Islands.
4. That Matanhy is on record of vociferously opposing MOPA when he spoke
along with me at various Anti-MOPA meetings, including the ones held at
Agacaim Cross and at Aquem Margao in the school hall, organized by
Churchill when he had formed the Save Goa Front.

Hoping for the best in the interest of GOA.

[Goanet] Doha Goans have a ball

2012-05-01 Thread Leo D'Mello 1

Doha Goans have a ball.

26th April, 2012 - A scintillating evening at Ramada Plaza, Doha, Qatar
marked the culmination of months of hardwork and organization by a dedicated
committee of Doha Goans Sports Club. The jam packed banquet room and the
congenial camaraderie of 500+ Goans and a fair share of other Indians as
well as other nationalities coloured the moods to laughter and fun.

The foot tapping music by the popular band, Blackslades, flown from India,
kept one and all on their toes and asking for more. It was nostalgia of home
away from home. Friends shared memories, new friendships and bonds were
created and the feeling of a vibrant community in a foreign land, made its
presence felt.

The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Doha Summer Queen 2012.
The coveted title was won by Ms Emelina Soares followed by first runner up,
Ms Carol Colaco and second runner up, Ms Swizel Pereira
Various group performances gave a break to the non-stop dancing couples. A
Jordanian Salsa couple caused many a heart to skip a beat while another
performance of Remo's Maria Pitacha by a group of young girls won many
hearts and applause.

Among many sponsors like Jet Airways, Air India, Trans Orient, Ramada Plaza
Doha, Gulf Lights, Mercure, Lulu, EZY Travels, Marhaba Jewellery was also
Royal Goan Beach Club, represented by its Marketing Director, Leo D'Mello
who offered a Free Holiday to the Summer Queen and to a lucky couple of the
evening.
A Souvenir was released to mark the event and the President of Doha Goans
Sports Club, Mr Ambrosio Dias, while thanking the hard working committee
members promised to take the Club and its reach higher with richer cultural
and communal export. He said he had the vision to make the community more
vibrant by galvanizing the wide array of talents and goodwill available with
the Doha Goans.
A good time was had by all and everyone is looking forward to more varied
programs and events to seal unity and goodwill among the expat community in
Doha.

The Chief Minister, speaking on the occasion said that if the government finds
the Mopa airport unfeasible, it would not go ahead with the project. However,
in today’s times Goa needs another airport, not only because the Dabolim

but
because it would largely benefit the air freight, especially the large quantity
of consumable goods arriving and going out of Goa, he added.

I have two things to say apropos of the above -

- Shouldn't the feasibility study have come BEFORE Manohar gave his
in-principle approval?

- Now he cuts a new one and tells us that Mopa is needed because of freight.
Here's another freebie - Mopa is absolutely essential for Goans to make a
quick getaway in case of an attack by little green men from Mars.

[Goanet] IS ALINA ALREADY LYING?

2012-05-01 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Alina Saldanha has publicly categorically stated that her late husband
Matanhy was not for or against Mopa Airport. She should have got the facts
right before speaking. Why is Alina twisting the facts for petty political
gains This is no tribute to the departed leader. Below is a letter
written by Matanhy in 2008 which says it all.

Mopa airport is a scam to eliminate Goa ”

By Matanhy Saldanha :

It is now very clear why many politicians and vested interest want the Mopa
airport. Many who are demanding for Mopa airport are ignorant or pretend to
be ignorant, that Goa is going to lose its identity since the builders are
going to build only for migrants from other states. Imagine how much land
is already sold to fly by night vested interest in Pernem alone. Similar is
the case throughout Goa. Read the below report: (Gomantak Times, 30th
August, 2008)

Hill cutting after purchasing land at cheap rates by non Goan builders is
rampant in Pernem taluka. Presently, hill locks in Mandrem, Chopdem and
Korgao are flattened and if this continues there is every possibility of
permanent damage to the forest covering in the taluka.

According to information available, builders brought large tracks of
thickly vegetated land in Pernem during the period from April 2006 and June
2008.

This includes 8.16 lakh sq mts of area by Mangala Realtors Pvt Ltd, Vasco
in Alorna, 4.61 lakh sq mts by J M Township, 4.38 sq mts by M/s Christian
Farm Land (India) Pvt Ltd from Bangalore, 3.05 lakh sq mts by M/s N E
Electronics Ltd, Guwahati- Assam, 2.5 lakh sq mts by Leading Hotels Pvt
Ltd, Delhi, 2.57 lakh sq mts by M/s Wide Properties, Panaji, 2.44 lakh sq
mts by Beside Realty Pvt Lmt, Mumbai and two plots of 2.27 lakh and 2.13
lakh sq mts by Enterprises Value Investment (India) Pvt Ltd company,
Mumbai.

Similarly Amrapali Realtor, Delhi (25,587 sq mts), Padmashil Fine West Pvt.
Ltd, Parel (15,980 sq. mts), Messers Rajan Hatiskar, Thane, Maharastra
(108, 842 sq. mts), Pushpalata Samant, Dadar Mumbai (1.1 lakh sq. mts) and
M/s Prasanna Developers (1.16 lakh sq. mts) have also brought land during
this period. Residents fear, the forest areas may completely vanish, due to
the proposed Mopa airport, tourism business and other demand for land in
Pernem taluka.

Goa is already saturated. With further profit ridden development, by
builders, real estate agents and some unscrupulous elected representatives,
Goa soon will make all Goans not only a minority, but strangers in their
own land. Do we want this?

Demand for Special Status, to stop sale and transfer of land to
individuals, companies from other states.

Goans and all others who love Goa, irrespective of religion, caste, region
or political affiliations, UNITE to stop Goa from being eliminated.

[Goanet] Goan books by certain Goan authors excluded in Goan libraries: Why the selective deliberate exclusions?

2012-05-01 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear goanet readers

Selma Carvalho (still in UK? I presume as the next Virgin Atlantic flight to
Mars is full) wrote:
Now coming to Melvyn Fernandes of UK. Here is a list of things he has accused
other people of:

- Silvano Barbarosa did not respond to his emails? about the book Sixth Night
when he was trying to market it.
- Eddie Fernandes did not publish his review on the book Sixth Night
- Selma Carvalho carried a stock of the book to the Global Goans Covention and
then hid them from sight.

There seems to be an all-round conspiracy against Melvyn.

Melvyn's response (after black coffee and a Jacob's cream cracker):
- On England's cold and misty morning bus journeys to work, Sixth Night made
enlightening reading from cover to cover especially to a Goan fella like me. It
was on one of these journeys, just like Archimedes, I had a Eureka moment
reading pages 106 to 112 at which point, I jumped out of my seat (this was not
a
heart attack) and tried to get off the bus in a hurry before the doors shut as
I would have missed my stop. An efficient Goan telephone directory
operator helped me find Silviano at his relations place in Benaulim, Goa so I
was able to thank him for his insight of our people which he excellently
portrayed in
Sixth Night, as nearly all events that happen today are mirrored in his book
covering yesteryear.

- As an honorary community worker in the UK since 1974, I would remind Selma
bhai that I only deal with facts not conspiracy, as suggested.

- Sixth Night is a must to be read book for everyone of all ages in our
community before leaving diverse and lonely planet earth to increase their
understanding
on why the Goan community behaves the way it does. I know it is now possible
for interested people to easily read the book through their tablet, kindle, get
a
copy from www.amazon.com, request a copy from their local public library or
even borrow it from a friend. Hopefully one day Bollywood will consider making
a film of Sixth Night.

- I look forward to the day when we can all as a community have a champagne
moment to appreciate each others achievements and contribution to society.
This year it will be 22nd birthday of World Goa Day and this may be an
opportunity to cheer our heritage and goodwill to all.

- For information, Silviano has been in touch and all is well between us.

...the Manohar Parrikar Government should hold a referndum - go to the

Surely the Centre cannot dictate, stating the spoils of war! Dabolim was a
Civilian Airport and should remain so. The Navy has a big facility at
Karwar and they should move there a.s.a.p. - like yesterday. Having the

[Goanet] HTG - How's the Goan? (by Rose Fernandes)

2012-05-01 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear goanet readers

After another evening of fine wining and dining, my thanks go to Mr Eugene Dias
and his staff of Palms of Goa Restaurant, 160 New Cavendish Street, London
for the excellent food and hospitality extended to all of us. Anyone wishing to
feast at this restaurant can find details at www.palmsofgoa.com. Parking is
free
after 6.30 p.m.

This evening was the launch event of HTG How's the Goan? and a new initiative
organised by Jason Fernandes and his team who felt the need to address
the community gap in the United Kingdom for our youth. The evening concluded
with Clinton Tavares entertaining us in his own musical style which was a real
treat. His album is due out shortly and you can catch up with him on his
facebook page www.facebook.com/clintontavaresmusic.

A room full of young men and women of our community mingling with each other
and enjoying themselves in a civilised manner took me back to the
times when I was in my twenties and thirties. At this time, there was a whole
group of us that went to a community event nearly every single weekend of the
year having a great time.

So why did I leave the event feeling that the youth of today or the community
in general are experiencing some sort of Goan identity crisis? Was this event
the
first new green shoots of trying to address this?

Jason and his team are organising further events (the next on the Konkani
language planned for July) and I hope that these exploratory sessions will lead
to our
youth realising that within our community is the very best of everything, in
our food, music, dancing, language and culture. Not all is positive, we do have
differences, what can be done, what cannot be done but we all have to be proud
of our culture and be ambassadors to showcase ourselves to the rest of the
world. Not that the rest of the world doesn't know about us already. Non-Goans
outside India enjoy Goa so much that they return to it year after year and I
have often said that they market our homeland much better than we do!

Jason Fernandes was a participant in the Goa Government Know Goa Programme. He
is intending to set up a charity with the following aims:

- An enquiry into what it means to be part of the UK Goan Community.
- An access for everyone to contribute to the making of enlivening results in
the UK Goan Community.
- To be a representative voice for UK Goan Community Youth.

Can you help Jason achieve these aims. He can be contacted on
jason.p.fernan...@gmail.com or jason.p.fernan...@googlemail.com.

Soon the Olympics will be in London, England and a flaming torch will be passed
from one athlete to another before it gets to its final destination, lighting
up the
skies day and night. Let us hope that How's the Goan? which has started as a
small flame continues to grow with each event planned, blazing the path of
our youth as they journey towards reclaiming their birthright.

Manohar Parrikar in my mind, is a good honest man, who has the interest of
Goans and Goa at heart.  However his infatuation with the Mopa airport is
puzzling.  He must be getting a lot of pressure from  certain quarters, and
from people who have purchased land around the proposed Mopa airport and stand
to make crores of rupees if the airport is built.

I certainly hope that he takes a step back and reviews the whole situation
before proceeding with an airport at Mopa. Tourists ?  Bah !!!  Havent we had

state folks who predominate as employees  in the  hotels and casinos in Goa.
Have you gone out to dinner at a good restaurant lately ?  You better have a

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 5th Sunday of Easter

2012-05-01 Thread Jude Botelho
29-Apr-2012

Dear Friend,

Life today is filled with gadgets and appliances that make life a little more
easy and convenient. But we know that if there is a power failure all the
wonderful gadgets are useless. It's the same with our laptops, iPhones and
iPads, we want them to work faster and better. But even the latest and the
fastest appliance we have can be useless if we don't have a high speed
connection. What about our connection with God? Do we have the connection and
keep it? Have a 'connected-weekend' with the Source! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 5th Sunday of Easter: 'Without me you cannot live, you can
do nothing!' 6-May-2012
Readings: Acts 9: 26-31 1 John 3: 18-24    John 15: 1-8

The first reading from the Acts tells us of how Paul after his conversion
sought to become part of the Christian community in Jerusalem . The community
feared Paul because of his past history of persecuting the followers of the
Lord Jesus. Barnabas, whose name means 'encouragement' took charge and
initiated Paul into the group. We cannot live our Christianity in isolation: I,
me and my God! We have to be part of the Christian community, part of the local
community, part of the Church. Incidentally the letter 'u' is right in the
middle of the word 'church'! That is where we aught to be, fully integrated
into the Church.

We are the terminals
A poor German schoolmaster, who lived in a humble house in a small village,
carved over his doorway this proud inscription: Dante, Moliere, and Goethe
live here! That schoolmaster had learned that the secret of a rich life lies
in one's spiritual companionship. Jesus wants his followers to be united with
him like the branches to a tree and to enjoy continually his spiritual company.
I am the vine, you are the branches, he says. In so far as we abide in him
and He in us, we will bear much fruit, because He is the source of life and in
so far as we do not, we will be absolutely ineffective, because without Him we
can do nothing.  If a schoolmaster can say that Dante and Moliere and Goethe
live with him, why can't Christians say that Christ lives in us and we in
Christ? Probably, most of us have at one time or other walked into a bank or an
airline office to be told by the staff: Sorry you will have to wait, the
computer system is down.' We can see
that the computer terminals are there, some switched on. The screens are lit
up; they may even perform some limited functions. However, we know they are
quite helpless, because they are not connected to the 'mainframe'. Like the
computer terminals, we have to be plugged into Jesus, the mainframe, if we want
to be of any use.
Mark Link in 'Sunday Homilies'

In the Gospel of John we hear Jesus speaking of this same unity and intimacy,
which should be part of our relationship with Jesus and with his Church. He
illustrates this with a very earthy metaphor. I am the true vine and my Father
is the vine grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every
branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear even more fruit. Firstly, we
are reminded that the Father is the vine grower. He is the source of life for
Jesus and his Church and in the measure we are united with Jesus in that
measure we live and grow. No branch can selfishly seek its own good,
independent of others. Usually such a branch turns out to be a parasite or
sucker, which must be effectively trimmed away.  Pruning can be painful, for in
the life of the Church; it can mean cutting back on activities and programmes,
though good in themselves, which the entire vine cannot sustain. The new growth
may be healthy yet preventing fruit from
forming on the vine. We all need pruning: correction, direction, discipline so
that our lives may be fruitful in His service. This pruning is especially
necessary for those who have been successful in their actions. Only the humble
can bear fruit in Christ.  Jesus' secret was his contact with God; ours is
contact with God through Jesus. This means dependence. We are dependant on God
for everything, right up to life itself. Sometimes it might seem like inaction
as Milton said in his sonnet on his blindness, They also serve who only stand
and wait. One thing is certain, life grows not because of our efforts alone
but because we are connected with God.

Stay connected
Out walking yesterday morning I noticed that somebody has been very busy
collecting the many branches blown off the trees recently. The thrifty provider
has gathered the dead timber into piles to bring it home for the fire. The live
branches on the trees also attracted my attention as they shoot new buds that
will, in time, bear fruit again. It is the usual cycle of growth and decay and
growth again. This is the simple image Jesus uses in today's gospel. If we
break off from him, we die spiritually and are fit only for the fire like the
dead timber. On the other hand, as long as we remain

[Goanet] Floriano's Ramblings on MOPA

2012-05-01 Thread floriano

Dear Goans,

Let us put the much talked about in recent days 'MOPA' under the 'Laser Line
Combiner microscope' to detect the fault-lines which can never be detected
through any other ordinary microscope, so that Goans do not make a mistake
of the Century in denying themselves their throbbing LOVE, G O A.

First, let us focus on the Indian Navy which has been occupying Goa's
Civilian Airport, Dabolim, as the 'spoils of war'. Not only did the Navy
sell us 'gullible' Goans the novel idea that it has 'liberated' our Goa from
the Portuguese in 1961, but also it has reduced us to a state of being
'zombies' to believe that the Navy, in perpetrating the illegality of this
maha occupation, is also trying to make us believe that it's continuance of
our beloved Dabolim Airport is in the interest of the 'security' of the
Indian Nation as a whole, which by the way is totally false.

Even if this was true, does our tiny 'Goa' have to be burdened with such a
vast responsibility, that it has to host this 'fake Navy' in Goa to
continue to have it's parallel Naval Installation in Goa to the detriment
of Goa's own survival when thousands of crores of rupees have been spent by
the Nation to establish a war horse modern and sophisticated 'Sea Bird'
Naval Air and Submarine Base at Karwar, merely a stone's throw away? Does
the Navy in Goa want to tell us Goans that a few scattered training flights
for their raw pilots is the defence security of the Indian Nation and of Goa
in particular, when a flight under training could land on top of the mass
of petrol tanks in Vasco and make a bon fire, not only of the Vasco City,
but of entire Goa? Has this unparalleled defence of India Navy at Goa ever
attempted to send it's trainee pilots flying over the Goa's territorial
waters just off Mormugao to detect and identify the super tankers that
off-load their slop tanks full of 'COW' [ Crude Oil Washings] to come clean
at Gulf load-load ports, resulting in marring of our Goan Golden beaches
with tar balls? Is this Excellent Defence of India Navy here in Goa only to
dance with the Navy Queens at Navy Balls, drink, make merry, grow pot
bellies and enjoy picnicking on Goa's off-shore islands, wanting them too
under it's command in the name of defence security? Is Dabolim to be at the
use of the Navy's helicopter trainee pilots , to land helicopters at places
like Khorlim in Mapusa, in the thick of the residential area to pick up
their girl friends on dates?, telling us that no commercial flights can land
when these stupid training sessions are ongoing?

That successive Goan Chief Ministers, starting with the first Chief
Minister Dayanand Bandodkar, followed by his hare-brained daughter
Shashikala Kakodkar could never muster enough guts to ever to tell the Navy
to scoot from Goa is another matter altogether. They could only consume
themselves with the failed mission of taking Goa into Maharashtra. In the
end all that has been accomplished is the changing our dear 'PANJIM' to the
Maratha 'PANAJI' which we true Goans hate to our bones. The less said about
our so called other distinguished Chief Ministers, the better. Most of them
were the clones of the MGP with merger of Goa into Maharashtra as their
mission. Incidentally, one such useless, motor-cycle-pilot-turned-Chief
Minister of Goa, instead of telling the Navy to scoot, even handed-over
Goan Anjediva Island to them on a silver platter like it was his 'PAICHO
FAT'.Did Goans utter a word in opposition to this? Why? Of course not
for the simple reason that ' Zombies' cannot. They can only nod their heads
in assent.

Who do we think has floated the idea that Goa needs a separate all Civilian
Airport? The Navy, Of course. Why? Because it wants to rid the nuisance of
managing the civilian flights at Dabolim and have the Dabolim run-way to
hold their prized Navy Queen Balls. And who has identified MOPA as the
site for the new generation Goa's Civilian International Airport if not the
MG wallahs? so that the merger of Goa into Maharashtra takes place from the
back-door, the front door having been closed by the white-beaded Goan at
heart Dr. Jack de Sequeira - the true Moidekar Goan Patriot. Being a
Moidekar myself, pride oozes out of my every pore, frankly speaking. In the
event that MOPA does take shape, more specifically it being tom-tomed as a
PPP project, will the operators cry hoarse of not making enough business
with civilian flights land and taking off at Dabolim airport? Will this not
give the Navy the excuse to shut off all civilian flights and keep Dabolim
for it's exclusive use?

Coming back to the present, the Goa BJP, if it wanted the late Goan patriot
'Matanhy Saldanha' into it's camp to send a signal to gullible Goans that it
has changed it's colour, MOPA had to be out of the Election Manifesto 2012.
Why? Late Matanhy could not allow this. It is a fact that Matanhy was sweet

I am glad that most Goanetters understand written English, and would therefore
see the glaring folly in Marshall's fabricated evidence No. 1, unless, of
course, they base their trust in whatever crap Marshall writes out of religious
or ideological loyalty. Marshall's English teacher would most likely laugh at
what he has written below. I know mine would. His folly is the classic case of
deluding oneself that one's own misinterpretation of someone else's opinion
counts as fact. This could very well be a deliberate misrepresentation as well.

So let me set the record straight. Here is what I said in this
post: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2012-February/218533.html

QUOTE
Despite its name, the CSF is not a secular forum. It is a Catholic propaganda
outfit as much as the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is a Hindu propaganda outfit. So
it is understandable that it would want to point out the flaws in the Hindu
religion, and offer the Christian gospel as the answer. Similarly, Sandesh
appears to be a devout Hindu who is understandably offended by the anti-Hindu
propaganda of CSF. He is lashing out against the CSF in response, and may also
be overly paranoid about his fellow Hindus being converted to Christianity.

Here is Sandesh Anvekar's post:
http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2012-February/218523.html

Please note that Sandesh Anvekar was lashing out against the following
anti-Hindu insinuation by the CSF:

http://persecutedchurch.info/2012/02/11/the-gospel-provides-powerful-hope-for-indias-temple-prostitutes/

The above website is not that of the Church but that of CSF. That is why it is
reasonable and fair to hold the opinion that Sandesh was lashing out against
CSF by implicating what is sacred to that organization, namely the Church, in
its religious chauvinistic actions. This is how religio-political activists use
guilt by association to lash out against their perceived opponents. Marshall
knows this very well because he resorts to it all the time himself.

Those who do not understand, for whatever reason, why the above article by CSF
on its percecutedchurch.info website is anti-Hindu insinuation, I would like
to point out the fact that the term India's temples refers to Hindu temples,
and temple prostitution is a Hindu practice. The CSF is claiming that the
Christian gospel is giving these prostitutes powerful hope, implying that there
is no hope for them in Hindu temples.

Cheers,

Santosh

Unlike the Congress criminals we had ruling us, I know that he wants to do it

My harsh criticism of him insofar as Mopa is concerned came to be because I

There are some early promising shoots that we are seeing from him - his putting

[Goanet] Judge Desmond D'Costa

2012-05-01 Thread John Collaco

Sad this happened to a nizgoenkar and not many Goenkars on
this forum raised their voice strongly enough against this flagrant usurp by
the sinister
powers in the temple of justice to eliminate Goan judges
from consideration for higher posts.

[Goanet] Goa Airport Solution

2012-05-01 Thread arwinmesquita
Centrally located Dabolim was originally a full civilian airport and was not
planned to have a Navy Base. Appreciate that the Navy had used this temporarily
for their earlier operations but this can't be made permanent. The Navy must
move out of this residential region, which will as a result finally resolve the
Airport issue

Re: [Goanet] P O cruise ship staff paid basic salary of 75 pence an hour.

2012-05-01 Thread Venantius J Pinto
One thing to bear in mind is that the Indian National media did not uncover
this. It says a lot about the Guardian to be able to shame their own (and
even if perhaps registered outside the UK).

One more thing is the on some cruise lines the crew is not permitted to
sell phone cards among themselves even though it saves them a small bundle.
They have tyo buy it on board.

There was a time when we some visible World Bank boys, finance blokes in
GNet. Some of them had interesting takes on capitalism, although they had
missed that Adam Smith himself was against laissez-faire capitalism! Of
course its always a job, someone has to do it, but one can always mention
such things -- which should never hurt anyone if their heart in is the
right place, and one is comfortable with doing certain bidding/s.

Re: [Goanet] Hitting the RESET button

My hope was that Manohar would turn a new leaf and that 'devlopment'

so sure given what has been on display thus far.  In a recent email
correspondence, Professor Nandkumar Kamat informed me that only
42,000 hectares of Goan land remain open now for any kind of spatial
planning.  That's just 420 sq kms.  We are running that low on our most
precious resource - land.

Shouldn't Goa be hitting the RESET button?

r,
The land mass of Goa is fixed.
It is not how much land is used, what matters is how well it is used.

Just recently you posted pictures of fields in Siolim. Once upon a time, those
fields made the village rich with bountiful crops of rice. Today, only one
third of the fields are cultivated. There are two reasons for this:
1) The price of rice is so low and inputs are so high that it becomes
unprofitable to grow it.
2) Salt has entered the fields and made the soil unsuitable for crops.

Goa has exceptional human resources i.e. well educated people. It has to decide
on whether to:
a) subsidize dead and dying occupations of yesterday like farmers and toddy
tapers
or
b) utilize the skills sets of those already living there and/or provide them
with the infrastructure for tomorrows economy.

The current situation in Goa is that the educated have to look for employment
outside Goa and those who need low skill labour have to import it from outside
Goa. This, to me, is the real disaster.

Goa now has the opportunity to leap into the IT age. The CM, an IIT graduate,
should have a good idea on how to facilitate the same. Trying to support the
traditional occupations of the people will only result in a state of peasants
and farmers.

This is the reset button that needs to be hit.

[Goanet] Dabolim Airport...

2012-05-01 Thread Bernado Colaco
90% of voters (most ghantis) do not know that the airport is a spoils of war. A
referendum will dictate the demise of Goa. The bharatis should know that
Dabolim is not theirs and get their katli potli back to delhhi.

BC

..the Manohar Parrikar Government should

hold a referndum - go to the
People - ask them if they want the status quo to remain or whether Goans
should demand the return of Dabolim Airport to the Gov. of Goa.
Surely the Centre cannot dictate, stating the spoils of war!  Dabolim was a
Civilian Airport and should remain so. The Navy has a big facility ati
Karwar and they should move there a.s.a.p. - like yesterday. Having the
facility at Dabolim makes Goa a legitimate, hit-list strike potential.
Does Goa have to take the bullet for the whole of India; i.e. be
obliterated?

[Goanet] International jazz day celebrated in Goa!

2012-05-01 Thread Jazz Goa
Jazz Goa celebrates International jazz day
UNESCO recently declared the 30th of April as International jazz day,
encouraging worldwide participation on and around the 30th of April every year.
Jazz Goa celebrated it in style on the 1st of May in a second edition of
'Concert in the park' at the beautifully renovated Jardim Garcia da Orta in
Panjim. the crowd turnout was nothing short of phenomenal with all seating
arrangement filling in even before kick off time at 6pm. The rest of the huge
gathering filed in around 7pm and were happy to stand through some rivetting
performances that simply took thier breath away. The concert had celebrity show
host Raymond Alburqueque at the helm introducing every act with his usual flair
to give the show a classy edge. The Panjim Open Philharmonic made up of amateur
and professional musicians took the stage on the dot of six and went through
their repertoire with finnese guided by founding member Rui Lobo.
Then came Raymonds announcement of Jazz Goa's official participation in the
International jazz day inviting Jazz Junction to take the stage with Yvonne
Gonsalves on vocals, Joshua Costa on keyboards, Colin D'Cruz on fretless bass
and Lester Godinho on drums. The quartet simply blew the crowd away at the
outset itself opening with a swinging original called 'Jazz Goa Blues' followed
by their own versions of jazz standards like 'Triste' and 'You don't know what
love is' including contemporory jazz tunes like' and 'Any place I hang my hat
is home'. They then invited Canadian jazz singer Steffano Rochetti to jam on
'Georgia' and 'Autumn Leaves'. Steffano is a showman extraordinaire, the crowd
just could not get enough of him, he left the stage promising to be back after
a beer. Jazz Junction wound up their set with a tune aptly titled 'That's all'.
UK guitarist Chris Jolly and singer Zezinho Fernandes then filled in with a
couple of mellow tunes while a
Goa's hot new act 'Smoking Chutney' prepared to blow the jam packed park away
in a sizzling hour long set. Smoking Chutney featured Benoy Rai on guitar and
vocals, Colin D'Cruz on bass and Dennis Coelho on drums with Goa's ace
percussionist Carlos Gonsalves jamming in as a guest along with UK singer Jan
Graveson. The band opened with a smoking rendition of John Scofield's 'Do Like
Eddie' that had some Benoy's fiery guitar solos sitting on Dennis and Colin's
tight drum and bass grooves. Then came the tune 'Tightrope' this time
showcasing Benoy's vocal talent as well. Another smoking blues called 'Red
House' and it was time for Jan Graveson to join Smoking Chutney to pump up the
already adrenalized band. Jan showed the audience what 'showtime' is all about
with high energy renditions of the Police's  'Message in a bottle' and the
Beatle's 'Come together'. Jan's was a tough act to follow but showman Steffano
took it in his stride taking the stage again
with an absolutely amazing rendition of 'Hoochie Coochie man'. It was now way
past closing time but the crowd stayed rivetted demanding an encore that turned
out to be the ultimate show stopper - an original tune titled 'Smoking Chutney'
by the closing act 'Smoking Chutney'. The show ended with Raymond promising
many more concerts in the park. Those who miss out on Jazz Goa concerts can log
on to http://www.youtube.com/user/jazzgoa to view videoclips of the action in
Goa.
