[Goanet] Caste and Christianity
Caste and Christianity by David Mosse (available at http://www.india-seminar.com/2012/633/633_david_mosse.htm) THE theme of caste and Christianity raises the broader issue of the relationship between caste and religion, each in itself a difficult term. But perhaps we can start with a sociological observation that has been rather obscured by various theoretical and ideological elaborations of caste. The observation is that a person's caste is determined by lineage, to a lesser degree by occupation, perhaps by residence, but it is usually unthinkable that which god or gods a person worships or believes in, the faith that they have, is determinant of caste identity.1 Nonetheless, the idea that caste is a matter of religion, that it is a Hindu institution if not actually part of Hinduism, has had extraordinary influence. This idea which may have its roots in the exigencies of 19th century Protestant missionaries2 was, during the 20th century, solidified into administration and social theory as a dominant view. It was held in contrasting variants by Mohandas K. Gandhi and his political opponent, Bhimrao R. Ambedkar. Despite the unequivocal findings of Justice Ranganath Misra's Commission on the subject, which concluded that 'the caste system should be recognized as a general social characteristic of the Indian society as a whole, without questioning whether the philosophy and teachings of any particular religion recognize it or not,'3 the idea of caste as Hindu underlies the continued and wholly unjustified exclusion of Christian and Muslim converts from the Indian state's statutory concessions and protections as 'Scheduled Castes'. Add to this the fact that in several parts of India Christians are so predominantly Dalit that the segregation of and discrimination against Christians and Dalits is one and the same. Little remains standing today of Louis Dumont's once-pivotal theoretical edifice that founded caste on religious ideas of purity and impurity, while treating caste practices among non-Hindu groups as merely residual 'hangovers'.4 His ontological separation of the religious from the political was an impediment to grasping changing forms of caste. We also now know that caste evades both structural definition as system and revisionist characterization as 'colonial invention', that it is widely variable in form, reappears in modern institutions (even within the Christian priesthood) in the absence of any of its putative ideological underpinnings, and even where explicitly denied. *R*egardless of this, scholarship on Christianity and caste tends to assume that religious affiliation provides a primary mode of social identification; that we can have a sociology of Indian Christians. In fact, despite 'communal' legal-political constructions and an elite Christian discourse,5 the churches in India have failed to engendered separate social-political identities or to bring into social existence the Christian 'imagined community.' (The exceptions are certain coastal communities where caste and Christian religion became mutually defining.) Many sociologists have nonetheless sought to examine and explain caste practices among various Indian 'Christian communities', often in terms of deletion or depletion of an 'original' Hindu form: Christians they say do not hold notions of bodily or caste pollution (something that is in fact highly variable), or that Christians may have caste but there is no caste system among them.6 Taking religion as fixed and making caste the dependent variable is, however, mistaken. Caste and Christianity have in fact interacted in historically and regionally specific ways, shaped by various political projects, each of which poses a different sociological question. Both caste and Christianity have been changed by these interactions. *R*ather than framing the issue in terms of the nature of caste among Indian Christians, it is often more fruitful to ask about the Christian influence on the experience of caste; or instead of asking whether or how Christianity in India has accommodated caste (a missiological question), to ask how caste has accommodated Christianity as part of its particular cultural politics (an ethnographic question). There are potentially many starting points and directions in which to take this kind of enquiry, and much of the rest of the article is particularly shaped by the experience of Christianity and caste in Tamil South India. My own work has traced a four-hundred year history of Christianity-caste interactions, focusing on Catholicism in southern Tamil Nadu.7 This begins with the 17th century Jesuit mission of Roberto Nobili that was particularly exercised by its converts' preoccupations with caste rank, and regarded some accommodation of the culture of caste as necessary to ensure the prestige of Christianity without which the mission would be consigned to the impure social periphery of outcastes, fisherfolk and foreigners. To this end, these Jesuits argued
Re: [Goanet] Clare Mendonca, and Kumkum
Dear FN and Goanetters, I'm guessing Dr Kale means *Kunku* (1937) which was also released in a Hindi version titled *Duniya na Mane* (The Unexpected), directed by V. Shantaram. I've done some research and found some articles in the *Times of India* about *Duniya* from 1937. Film reviews at this time were uncredited, but these are almost certainly by Clare Mendonca. I've attached the pdf files which you can share with Dr. Kale. On the subject of Goan film musicians - you might have come across Gregory Booth's book *Behind the Curtain: Making Music in Mumbai's Film Studios*(2008). The book begins with Mr. Anthony Gonsalves born in 1927 in Majorda and a major violinist, music arranger, and composer in the Bombay film industry. Hope this helps. Re: [Goanet] GOAN CULINARY CLUB - The Goan food connect
Heartiest congratulations to those involved in this great initiative. My we form a Confrarias type of association and our standards improve. BC Dear All , Permit me to share a post that appeared on the Navhind times of the 14th June, 2012 and carried by the Goan Voice UK too. Thanks to all of you who have supported us, we hope many more will support the cause in the years to come. rene Navhind Times - Goa The Goan food connect Published on: June 13, 2012 - 22:25 More in: * iLIVE My grandmother was a fabulous cook closely followed by my mother. And is it not always so? The previous generation seems to have got their cooking right and try as we might we cannot replicate “that taste”. Here to help all of us struggling to get our Xacuti, Kodi and Caldin just right is the Goan Culinary Club Goa Chapter, which aims at preserving, promoting and standardising Goan cuisine for Goans, now and forever By Anuradha Das | NT BUZZ While Goans are crying themselves hoarse that their culture is losing out to the various influences (cultural invasion including the Western and Indian), while Goans are fighting fiercely for the survival, growth and continuity of their mother tongue, no thought is being given to another aspect that is as intrinsic to this land as its culture and language - its food. And the fault does not lie only in Goan homes where Goan cuisine competes with Continental, Thai, Chinese and other more popular Indian cuisine to win favour with the younger generation. The fault also lies with public eating places – shacks, restaurants and hotels – that are marketing Goa to visitors through so called “local” food. “What is authentic Goan food?” questions Odette Mascarenhas bluntly. “Do even we Goans have an idea?” “Look at what is marketed as Xacuti; as simple as that. We have been to so many places and been shocked at what is being passed off as this very fundamental Goan dish,” grouses Odette, saying that while it is understandable that there is a Goan Hindu and Goan Catholic variation of the dish with sub variations depending on whether the dish is cooked in North Goa or South Goa, what local eateries are passing off if beyond understanding. “In restaurants and star hotels in Goa there modified version of Goan dishes - more suitable to the foreign or non-Goan palette – are being marketed. Look at the Punjabis. Do they modify their chicken makhni to suit the world’s taste buds?” shoots Odette, winner of the 2008 Gourmand World Cook Book Awards. This apparently is not the end of Goan culinary woes. Young Goan chefs, training in the industry, do not want to specialise in Goan cuisine. Why? Because there is no market for Goan food. Not in the star restaurant in Goa or anywhere else. If you want to cook and sell Goan food then your best options are a small restaurant or shack. So, in short, mastering Goan cooking does nothing to further careers in the hospitality industry. “Nobody knows anything about Goan food. When I was in Paris to receive the Gourmand award I was asked what Goan food was like. The people there knew about Indian food, but not Goan food,” says Odette. With all this background, when Rene and Maria Baretto, co-founders of the Global Goan Club, a club that links Goan Associations all over the world and keeps Goan updated about what is happening where with the community, approached Odette to save and promote Goan cuisine, it was a meeting of minds on the same wavelength. And from this meeting was born the Goan Culinary Club Goa Chapter, with Odette and Joe Mascarenhas as co-founders. Slyvester D’Souza, Sheila Bar and Restaurant, Michael Mascarenhas, Flying Dolphin, Peter Fernandes, O Coqueiro, Edia Cotta, Alila Diva, Chef Rego, Taj, Mariotts, Resort Rio, Grand Hayatt and several other like-minded Goans are members of the club. The aim of this club is to educate people in what is authentic Goan cuisine while promoting the same worldwide. “It was important to revive the pride we have in our food,” says Odette, whose one hope for this club is that somewhere in the distant future it will have helped standardise local fare while maintaining indigenous authenticity. “We will take it one step at a time. First we have decided to convince professionals in the food industry to standardise the taste of Goan food. After all they are our ambassadors to the visiting world,” says Odette, co-founder of the Goan Culinary Club Goa Chapter, who is making it a point to tell star hotels that they have to at the very least have a corner for Goan food. “Just imagine, they are catering to tourists in Goa and don’t have Goan food on their menu. And if they do, it tastes nothing like the authentic stuff.” For starters the club has standardised the reichado masala, Xacuti (both north and south Goan) and prawn curry. Caldin and cafreal are on the list next. “At club gatherings, chefs from various hotels and restaurants

http://travelchatter.dailymail.co.uk/2012/05/campaign-for-more-sun-protesters-call-on-help-from-cameron.html A group of optimistically bikini-clad ladies held up handwritten signs calling for an improvement in the weather, with one cartel stating: 'Mr Cameron, show us the light'. The bizarre protest is part of a campaign by brothers Rob and Paul Forkan, who were orphaned by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. The pair are hoping to raise money to build an orphanage in Goa, India, as a tribute to their parents and are hoping to add to the proceeds by selling specially-designed flip flops - something that surely must have been hindered by the lack of sunny weather. Rob Forkan, who founded the brand Gandys Flip Flops, said: 'The poor weather and the current economic climate haven’t exactly put people in the mood for the beach. We thought it would be interesting to combine the two issues with a protest in jest. Hopefully we will cheer even Parliament up!' Ten per cent of the proceeds from sandals, which feature a footprint as part of the branding reflecting Mrs Forkan’s favourite poem, Mary Stevenson’s Footprints in the Sand, go to Children Walking Tall, a charity that helps slum and street children in Goa. Rob said: 'Our goal is to open an orphanage for the 10th anniversary of the tsunami, which gives us about two-and-a-half years. When we lived in India we used to spend time working in orphanages so we got to see what it was all about from an early age. After what we’ve been through, we really want to give something back.' The brothers have invested all of their savings in the brand and have already generated a great deal of interest from high street chains at home and abroad. Decision on medium of instruction is temporary: CM TNN | Jun 16, 2012, 01.34AM IST PANAJI: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar said that the challenge on the medium of instruction (MOI) issue is not over for him, as educationally it is an important issue and the present decision is temporary. Recalling the challenge in trying to sort out the issue, he told reporters that an academic authority will be set up in a week's time to sort out the issue in the context of Section 29 (2) of the RTE Act, 2009. Section 29 (2) states that the medium of instruction shall, as far as practicable, be in child's mother tongue. The education sector was a disturbing one for a year due to the MOI issue, said the chief minister, who also holds the education portfolio. THE SAME MINING STORY CONTINUES [Everything done without IBM Mines Dept Knowledge; no officer on site; no regular inspections; ore extracted above environment clearance limits, claims Alvares] [New Mining Policy before next season: Acharya] [New Mining leases after comprehensive Policy: CM] COMMENTS: Certainly, mining and economics has gone forward at a trot since the Portuguese times when they dished out mining leases like hot cakes. They (freedom fighters) drove out the Portuguese, erased/demolished their remembrances from Mala- Fontainhas but preserved their mining leases and enhanced them 100 folds. Why? Economics. Digambar Kamat was mining minister (BJP) under Manohar Parrikar and continued under Congress. It was ECONOMICS. Manohar Parrikar in opposition, no mining benefits and therefore whipped himself against mining wanting to bring all illegal mining to a stop and putting the illegal mining barons behind bars. Why? NO ECONOMICS. Goans believed in these crocodile tears, brought back Manohar Parrikar. Now they see that the crocodile tears have dried out. Now mining cannot be stopped or vice versa Environment cannot be protected at the cost of ECONOMICS from mining. It is suitcases full of ECONOMICS for the BJP (not the government). It is simple. It does not take a bright IIT'an to understand that ECONOMICS is everything. Now we hear a different tune of 'NO MORE POLITICS'. [Ujea adim dumvor?? aka smoke before fire???] Goans very well know that when the 'CAT' has had it's fill, the finest of mice dangled before it's eyes cannot make it move. [Goanet] Moi
*for kind publication in Goanet, * *appeared in Goan Observer 16 June* * * *MOI* THE MOI issue is still controversial, judging by the opinions in the media with emphasis on it being a temporary decision. But, is it? CM Parrikar has made it clear that his decision to grant financial support to parochial schools where the medium of instruction is English is an administrative and not an educational solution. The formulation of the curriculum is the job of educators and not the CM. The people who are in favour of the native language have time and again made reference to the importance of the universal pedagogical principle of educating children in their native language. It is, no doubt, a valid language principle but it applies to children in all schools of Goa. We, of course, have a serious problem because in private primary schools children are allowed to be educated, not in their native languages of Konkani or Marathi, but in English! This, no doubt, is an educational problem. All schools will have to follow the same language policy and whether they get financial aid or not is a separate issue. The supporters of the universal pedagogical principle of educating children in their mother tongue, to be consistent with their educational philosophy, will have to demand the shutting down of all English medium primary schools. So far no one has uttered a single word! No educational committee anywhere in the world will have two different opinions on this point as it is illogical and contradictory to have two opposite educational principles, one for private schools and another for non-private schools. Another word for this is discrimination. The implementation of the language policy of the government will have to be the same for all schools, government or not. As the government does not want to politicise the language issue-and a wise decision too-the only other choice available to the government would be to shut down all private primary schools where English is used as the medium of instruction so the universal pedagogical principle is consistent for all schools. Or allow for multi-lingual primary education. Is there another choice? *Joao Barros Pereira, Japan.*
Re: [Goanet] Moi
Dear Joao Barros, A few queries for the purposes of clarification: 1: what % of Goans have Marathi as their mother tongue? i.e. speak Marathi with their mothers 2: what % of schools in Goa are Marathi medium? 3: what do you mean by children ALLOWED to be educated In English? 4: are you SERIOUS about demanding the shutting down of schools which teach in English medium? IF so . ALL I can say is WOW! jc spoke Marathi at home and around Konkani with my mother but delighted that I attended an English medium school Pardon any Typos. Drug trafficking and drug-rave-parties give Anjuna Beach the bad reputation as being the best drug spot at all in Goa - spread worldwide in international travel magazines and via social networks. [Goanet] How Bamons used and discarded catholics in Goa - Part 1
http://bharatmukti.blogspot.in/2012/06/how-bamons-used-and-discarded-catholics.html Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar declared in a Television interview to prudent media channel that those passing out in English medium will have to pass exams in Konkni and Marathi if they want government jobs. This is a latest brahminical diplomacy of the Saraswats in Goa. Saraswats and bamons have effectively used language as a weapon to further their policy of divide and rule. At a time when Goa was witnessing the end of Portuguese colonial rule and ushering of Indian brahmanical colonial rule in 1961 language was not an issue of dispute. Two main languages that people in Goa used includes Marathi and Roman Konkani. There was no dispute on this. Devnagri script konkani was not in existence then. bhahujan samaj used marathi while catholics used Roman script konkani for communication. Bamons and saraswats in Goa dreaded the possibility of Goa merging in Maharastra as Bhahujan samaj was all for it. Bamons of Goa plotted against this possibility and organised church and catholic population - who is today demanding English as mediums of instruction - against Bhahujan samaj. Moneyed bamon V.M.Salgaonkar spent 45 lakhs of rupees to fund this agitation of mobilizing votes against merger with Maharastra during opinion poll of January 1967. For this purpose he got Catholic mulnivasis to vote en mass against merger with Catholic Bamon Dr. Jack Sequeira as a leader. This is the first instance wherein bamons used Catholics of Goa to further their agenda of dominance. Even though bhahujan samaj and Catholics are both mulnivasis, both shudras, both parties allowed Brahmins to manipulate themselves. Then again in 1986 in a violent fights leading to loss of life and blood was fought. Two groups of mulnivasis fought this fight and both the groups lost the battle. One group of Shudras - Bhahujans who used marathi was fighting for making Marathi as official language of Goa. The Second group of Shudras - Catholics who used roman scripted konkani was fighting for making Konkani as official language of Goa. Konkani was declared the winner but not the Roman script konkani. Devnagri konkani, the language of Bamons was declared official language of Goa. Both the parties of Shudras lost in the battle. Bamons won. Mulnivasis lost. Eurasian Brahmins won. This is the second instance wherein bamons used catholics of Goa to further their agenda of dominance. Even though bhahujan samaj and Catholics are both mulnivasis, both shudras, both parties allowed Brahmins to manipulate them. This happened mainly because both parties failed to realize that they are being used by bamons and did not recognize bamon as their hereditary enemy. While bamons recognized mulnivasis - who they classified in manusmriti as shudras - as their hereditary enemy.
