Hi, Good you have to state that the Mining companies should be immediately ordered to start providing funds to rehabilitate the affected people. 35,000 crores is more than enough. In the first instance what would my decission if i was the chief minister . First i said Close all mines and file a police case against x y z. Next day i received a delegation of truck owners, drivers, and barge owners barge crew and other people working and earning their daily bread. They came with their wives and children too to tell me that they are starving. Being a lady I stood up and started to cry and took a u turn. It is easy to talk and make our judgement and accuse ministers but I can understand how difficult it must have been to Parrikar to clean Goa. Let me hear your opinion. The topic is How would i deal the mining problem if I was a chief minister
[Goanet] Questions to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar ? Day Five?
A friend has just arrived from Goa with similar stories. I one can not under our xri's attitude to this situation. Have we become dumb and deaf? BC Our capital was once a picture of great beauty and culture, providing a high quality of life for all of its residents. There was no comparable city anywhere in India. In fact, Panjim (and Goa) did not look like India.? Today, Panjim is a sick town, reeling from the abuse and neglect it has been subjected to. It has degenerated into a noisy jumble of people, metal, filth and garbage (like all other Indian towns).? Panjim also happens to be your own constituency. And your party now is in charge of the city government (CCP). It is time to restore Panjim to health.? The traffic is a mess, garbage and litter are all over the place, electrical hazards lurk at every corner, migrants defecate and urinate in the open, and the number of beggars has multiplied. (A beggars? racket is operating in Goa, a scandal that you are aware of.)? the river rendering these spaces dirty and unsafe for our women and children. The pavements are in a state of disrepair and the storied St Inez nallah continues to stink and breed mosquitoes.? The menace of noise pollution by the cruise boats every evening has persisted for years. Why do we need amplified sound on the boats in the first place? In any civilized country, people would do everything in their power to preservea serene ambience like the River Mandovi. Instead we have turned it into a crude?? spectacle. Manohar-bab, I plead with you to institute a permanent ban on amplified music on the river.? When can we expect a comprehensive action plan for Panjim? Corruption, Lokayukta, Police? The cancer of corruption has taken hold of India?s soul, and Goa is a leader in this arena. I was shocked when my 10-year old niece asked me about corruption. It is a measure of the depths the country has plumbed that we have to explain corruption to children of that age.? Your ?zero-tolerance to corruption? pledge won?t work unless the larger citizenry is on board, for this is a compact between the governor and the governed. You have to hold your political colleagues and bureaucracy accountable.? You announced yesterday that the Lokayukta will be in place likely by the end of this month. I look forward to the appointment of a man (or woman) of unimpeachable credentials, invested with autonomy and without the burden of political interference.? Nothing I say on the topic of Goa Police will be new to you or any Goan. It is a decades-long record of shame and sorrow. We need a complete overhaul.? Concluding Remarks? That?s it. I have touched on what I think are the major issues of the day.? Goa can no longer be ?saved.? Let us not kid ourselves. The Goa we knew and loved is gone. The best we can do is hold on to what we have and strive to make it less unpleasant than the rest of India. Even this will be a challenge, for the forces of decay and destruction loom all around us.? May the Force be with you ? and us!? Warm regards,?

On 20th December, 1986 Floriano Vaz was shot dead at Margao during the height of Konknni movement. Inorder to remember his supreme sacrifice, Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) of Porvorim has instituted ‘Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar’ which has been given every year since 2006. DKA calls upon the government to take stern action against those who desecrated the statue and bring the culprits to book, and at the same time DKA stongly demands that the desecrated statue of Konknni first martyr must be re-erected by the government immediately. [Goanet] Recover Mining Loot from Mining Companies
It is high time Goans demand that the Mining Loot of Rs 35,000 crores is recovered from Mining Companies who have not only been looting Goans but also destroying the Goan environment and polluting/reducing its water resources. This recovery can more than compensate the ordinary people affected by mining and also be used for the right development of Goa/Goans. Goa and Goans have been kept poor for so many years simply because our resources were stolen by select families and I personally am outraged by this fact. So many years of struggle making ends meets etc by Goans just because we are robbed in broad daylight by these priviliged people. Petty Thiefs go to Jail, so what do you think we should do with Multi Mega Thieves who have robbed us of Rs 35,000 crores? [Goanet] Wendell Rodricks protests against illegal mining, closes boutique
At the outset, I would like to state that I teach at the Chowgule College in Margao, and I do not have any intention of quitting my job. Chowgules have been operating their mines since 1950s, and it is only recently the allegations about illegality have come about. But I will wait for a final decision by the court on the subject. The main point in this message is the action by Wendell. I do believe that he must extend his stand, and boycott the mine owners, and anyone to do with the mining industry in all respects. For example, he must not socialise with any of the people involved in the industry, and also perhaps request them not to wear the clothes he has designed. After all, they are spending the money to buy his products from what he considers to be ill-gotten gain. Best regards, U. G. Barad.
[Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes against Selma Carvalho
Folks, The woman that Cyprian Fernandes seeks to vilify has spent the last five years of her life researching East African Goans. One of the earliest columns she wrote about East African Goans on GoanVoice UK can be read here: http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2009/Feb/issue3/ Sitting in the National Archives for long hours she gathered original research and penned a hugely successful book, Into The Diaspora Wilderness, largely about East African Goans. You can read 8 pages of comments and reviews on this book here: http://selmacarvalho.squarespace.com/reviews-etc/ On the heels of this book, she successfully lobbied for a grant to have the stories of East African Goans recorded. She then partnered with the British Library to have them permanently archived. For the past one year, she has been travelling relentlessly the length and breadth of London to record these stories, recruit interviewees, transcribe, edit and produce videos. She then worked tirelessly to produce a documentary from the recording which aired to a packed hall on the 22 of July 2012. The 25 minute documentary and some other videos produced by her can now be viewed at http://www.britishgoanproject.com/video-archive/ The best testimony of the love and respect Selma has always harboured for the East African Goan community has been her work. If there is one person who has put East African Goans on the map, it is Selma Carvalho, the same person Cyprian seeks to crucify. Such are the ways we Goans show our gratitude Please ask your friends to forward this message to their contacts. Best wishes, Eddie Fernandes www.goanvoice.org.uk
[Goanet] Britain pats Shah panel for unearthing illegal Goa mining
Britain pats Shah panel for unearthing illegal Goa miningSaturday, September 15th 2012, 08:05 AM Panaji, Sep 15 — Britain's political parties have hailed Justice M.B. Shah, whose probe has unearthed a Rs.35,000 crore worth illegal mining in Goa. In an early day motion (EDM) tabled in the British parliament Thursday, members from the Conservative, Labour as well as Liberal Democratic parties congratulated the retired judge, who headed a judicial commission which nailed plunder of millions of tonnes of iron ore in Goa. Politicians and bureaucrats have criminally allowed mining companies to illegally excavate ore, the commission report noted. That this House congratulates Indian judge, Justice M.B. Shah, for his inquiry exposing the illegal mining, which he estimates has cost the Goan community 3.75 billion (pounds) over the last five years, plundering the natural resources and environment in an unregulated and often illegal trade of iron ore to China and other countries at the expense of the environment, health and livelihoods of Goan farmers, reads the EDM 522, which has been signed by eight members of the British parliament. The motion also congratulates the state and central governments in India for closing down the mines, welcoming the decisive action of the Indian and Goan authorities in closing the mines, allowing only those mines with proper documentation to resume operations in due course. The motion also urges the Indian authorities to develop a plan for the development of a long-term sustainable economy in Goa that is not dependent on mining and the destruction of the environment. The MPs who have tabled the motion are Peter Bottomley (Conservative Party), Mark Durkan, Margaret Ritchie (Social Democratic and Labour Party), John Hemming, John Leech (Liberal Democrats), John McDonnell, Linda Riordan and Virendra Sharma (Labour Party). This is not the first time that the British parliament has shown interest in Goa's mining scene. In July this year the British parliament, in another EDM, urged the Indian authorities to probe illegal and indiscriminate mining in Goa which was causing serious concern to the state's environment. The concern expressed by Britain's parliament had triggered angry reactions in Goa's state legislative assembly, whose members had claimed that a foreign nation taking up the issue of illegal mining here amounted to interference in the sovereign matters of India. [Goanet] Adrift but not lost (Response to Gabe Menezes by Rose Fernandes)
Dear Gabe There is another mystery that needs to be solved, what has happened to the hymn sheet from the hymn book of the well researched writer of the above article Adrift but not lost, published in OHeraldo recently. Has this sheet blown off the ship that captured the mighty 9,000 and still blowing in the wind? In her above article she has written These are people adrift in a confusing, alien world. What he needs is support from the Goan community by way of legal advice, aware of welfare and housing benefits... Can we presume she has forgotten about the organisation she continually sings songs of praises about, The Goan Association UK, an organisation in existence for over 45 years, it has a Welfare Director and part of its mission statement reads: We also endeavor to provide limited welfare assistance to our community and our aim to increase the scope of this service in the future. According to Melvyn (a lapsed member for a few years), who has been involved with over 35 years as an honorary volunteer and office bearer with the organisation, he feels the current school of thought is more with bricks and mortar rather than investing in people. Wonder if welfare matters on the once good ship GOA UK are now hanging on drift wood.adrift and soon may be lost? Rose Fernandes Thornton Heath, Surrey, United Kingdom 15 September 2012
