[Goanet-News] Trans-cultural Architecture: Identity, Practice and Syncretism in Goa (at SOAS)
Trans-cultural Architecture: Identity, Practice and Syncretism in Goa Mallica Kumbera Landrus (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) Date: 9 January 2013Time: 5:00 PM Finishes: 9 January 2013Time: 7:00 PM Venue: Brunei GalleryRoom: B111 Type of Event: Seminar Series: South and Southeast Asian Art Archaeology Research Seminar In Goa the shifting class, caste, cultural boundaries, political and cultural movements, gave shape to a distinct space in India’s architectural history. Visual culture shaped a European authority and an indigenous population whose ideas and values were embodied by architecture in Goa. One hundred and fifteen churches were built under the Portuguese administration in Goa between 1510 and 1961. This number does not include the vast number of chapels or crosses that also dot the Goan landscape. Although no records regarding early reception of European style churches in Goa have thus far been uncovered, the unique style of temples in the area suggests a trans-cultural identity. My paper will explore churches built under the Portuguese administration as well as European influences that were inducted into Hindu temple architecture from the late seventeenth century onwards: first on the outskirts of Portuguese controlled Goa, and later in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries within Portuguese borders. The Goan temples use European and in some cases Islamic architectural elements to create hybrid structures that express regional identity, social politics, and divergent theologies of the sacred. The Hindu decision to employ these Western architectural elements in an Indian fashion is not unique to Goa, however in Goa we find the first of such trans-cultural Hindu temples in the colonial period. Emptied of their former western meaning, the features are used to fashion a new style in temple building. The following article appeared in today’s oHeraldo: Versatile actress Shalini no more January 9, 2013 TEAM HERALD teamher...@herald-goa.com PANJIM: Shalini Mardolkar, one of the most versatile actresses of her time, who mesmerized the audience with her acting, passed away on Monday (January 7) at her Vassai residence. She was 73. Goans will always remember Shalini for her role as Mother Mary in the religious drama ‘Sat Dukhi’ directed by late J P Souzalin. The audience tagged her ‘Dukhant Bhorloli Saibinn Maim’ for her outstanding acting in the drama. Shalini was the recipient of Tiatr Academy’s Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Award 2009 for her valuable contribution to the tiatr stage. She produced outstanding performances in Konkani films like ‘Nirmonn’ and ‘Mhoji Ghorkan’ besides performing in Marathi and Gujarati dramas. On behalf of all the tiatr fraternity and the tiatr lovers, Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) in a press release issued here, has condoled the death of Shalini and expresses heartfelt sympathies to her bereaved family. She entered the tiatr stage in 1949 when played the lead role along with late C Alvares in the tiatr “Bhav-Bhoinn” written and directed by Anthony Franklin Coelho. She went on to act in many Tiatrs produced and directed by top tiatr actors and directors including C Alvares, M Boyer, Prem Kumar, Souzalino, Alfred Rose, Robin Vaz, Jacinto Vaz and others. Besides acting, she directed a tiatr titled “Korta to Bhogta”. As a Konkani film heroine, to this day, Shalini remains unequalled. She produced superb performances in “Nirmonn” and “Mhoji Ghorkarn”. Her superlative acting in ‘Nirmonn’ fetched her National Award which she received from the then Prime Minister, late Mrs Indira Gandhi. Another highlight of ‘Nirmonn’ was the lullaby “Dol Mhojea Bai” sung and acted by Shalini which has become immortal in every Goan house. Shalini, a versatile actress of that time, has given a new dimension to acting in tiatrs. http://www.oheraldo.in/News/Local%20News/Versatile-actress-Shalini-no-more/69164.html COMMENTS: Shalini was a wonderful actress; she was soft-spoken. She acted in Konkani Tiatros and Marathi and Gujrati Nattaks or plays. On the Konkani stage, she is well-remembered for her exceptional role of ‘Ankvar Mori’ (Virgin Mary) in the tiatro titled “Sat Dukhi” by the late J.P. Souzalin. Similarly, she left a mark in the 1966 Konkani film ‘Nirmonn” in which she acted superbly and also sang a song ‘Nid Mhojea Bai’, which did not only become popular but every mother and the elderly would use and still use it as a lullaby to put their children to sleep. [Goanet] FW: Press Note for Kind Favour of Publication- Re: 'Parrikar compares his troubles with Christ's sufferings'
January 8, 2013 To, The Editor, TOI, HERALD, NT, GT, . Panjim. Sir, Sub: Press Note for Kind Favour of Publication- Re: 'Parrikar compares his troubles with Christ's sufferings' Kindly oblige Thanking you, Yours sincerely, Sd/- Floriano Lobo General Secretary/Spokesperson GOA SU-RAJ PARTY - GSRP H.O: 383A Pirazona Moira Bardez Goa-403 507 Telefax: (0832) 2470223 Mobile: 9890470896 Email: floriano.l...@gmail.com Website: www.goasu-raj.org Press Note The Goa Su-Raj Party is overjoyed to note, from the statement made by Manohar Parrikar in his village of Parra, that his troubles are comparable with the sufferings of CHRIST, for the simple reason that the CRUCIFIXION scene that shook the world in the past 20.13 centuries AD in Judea at Mount Calvary is soon to be enacted afresh at Parra-GOA with the CRUCIFIXION of a new avatar of Christ in Manohar Parrikar. All that this Party can say is OMG ! Goa sure needs the attention of the WORLD in these trying times where the loot from mining is scant to maintain the life-style and vote-banks on free for all DOLES. If at all CHRIST did have the mastery over making U-Turns, Judas, and not He would be nailed to the Cross. Giving this ridiculous statement coming out from the mouth of our IIT'an CM a good deal of thought, this Party feels that he (Parrikar) got the ICON entirely wrong to compare himself with. He should be comparing himself to Lord Ganesha, instead, having many more 'hands' than Lord Ganesha actually is believed to have, because, even Lord Ganesha would find himself totally and completely inadequate to distribute the number of DOLES that Parrikar has been distributing and is intending to distribute in the near future, unmindful of loading the exchequer with a terrible loan-burden, instead of going easy on borrowings and selling off precious State securities by stopping all vote-bank welfare schemes. Jesus Christ... in deed ! And, if any of our elected 'Catlik' Goan 'jokers' had to utter something like this, comparing themselves to Lord Ram or Lord Krishna, there would be riots to deal with and endless apologies demanded from every rooftop for 'hurting' RELIGIOUS SENTIMENTS' of Hindus. It is just as well that the erstwhile PORTUGUESE had good sense to condition 'Catlik' Goans to ignore and pass off such 'gaffes' from idiotic IIT'ans with a laugh or two. If at all Parrikar has identified himself with Christ, it is because he knows that 'Catlik' Goans are in his pocket, including those heavily decorated ornaments who adorn the Bishop's Palace at Altinho, Panjim. Should he (Parrikar) decide to be stupid enough to compare himself to Prophet Mohammed, instead, he will be instant HISTORY. As an after thought, if Goa Su-Raj Party were given the charge of nailing Parrikar-Christ to the cross, the Party would want to do a 'number' on the 'CARPENTER' that nailed CHRIST to the CROSS, by pocketing not one, but two of the nails, leaving him (Parrikar) hanging by his 'nailed to the cross' palms only. And just like they jeered at the hanging 'CHRIST' wanting Him to use his powers to free Himself from the Cross and save Himself, GSRP would want to jeer at Goa's hanging from the cross ' Ladla' CM-Christ and goad/urge him to make as many U-Turns as possible so that he could break the Guinness Book of World Records. At best, Goa Su-Raj Party feels that Goa's Ladla CM does not come even light-years closer to CHIRST and his sufferings and needs to be sent to APNA GHAR for 'juveniles' to rewind and come to his senses before he becomes completely raving mad with the ' PRO-MINING SYNDROME' End

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: The UGC Chair in Diaspora Studies at the GU: a note (Dr. Satyanarayana Adapa)
THE UGC CHAIR IN DIASPORA STUDIES AT THE GOA UNIVERSITY A note on a prospective plan of action Dr. Satyanarayana Adapa adapa_sat...@yahoo.co.in Professor, Diaspora Studies GOA University, Mobile. +91 9573405551; 7507172942 The University Grants Commission has sanctioned the Chair in Diaspora Studies to the Goa University during the Academic Year 2011-12. I have joined as Professor (Chair) Diaspora Studies of Goa University on 3 August 2012. The objectives of this Chair is to conduct research and encourage diaspora studies by evolving courses and research programmes in the university with an interdisciplinary perspective. This programme also envisages undertaking impact studies of Goan Diaspora and creating a database of people of Goan origin in particular and Indian in general. In order to carry out the research programme, it is proposed to recruit one post-doctoral research associate, three junior research fellows and two technical assistants. In consultation with the University authorities, it is decided to hold the interview for recruiting the research staff. In the meantime, I have been engaged in identifying relevant materials and sources for the study of the history of migrations from Goa since the 16th century. As per the UGC grant it is proposed to acquire books, reports pertaining to the history of Indian and Goan migrations and Diaspora. I am preparing a detailed bibliography of Indian Diaspora studies in consultation with the university Librarian. After the recruitment of research staff, we will carry out micro level field work and identify the places of migration in Goa for preparing the database. The database will profile the socio-economic conditions and patterns of Goan migrations to various countries and destinations. The NRI Department of Goa Government will be consulted to provide necessary information and relevant data. It is also proposed to contact concerned authorities of NRI Cell for obtaining region specific statistical and quantitative data. The Diaspora Studies {rogramme at Goa University will be carried out by developing interdisciplinary courses in social sciences, languages and humanities, as part of the choice based credit system. In consultation with colleagues in the faculty of social sciences and humanities, I propose to prepare topics for research related to Diaspora studies. The modalities for introducing a Ph.D programme in Diaspora Studies will be worked out. It is proposed to introduce an interdisciplinary course on Diaspora studies which will be offered from the next academic year, 2013-14. In accordance with the objectives of the proposal approved by the UGC, I am preparing syllabus for a Certificate Course on Tourist Guide and a P.G. Diploma Course in Travel and Tourism of six months and one year duration respectively. These courses are useful for the development of NRI-related tourism in Goa. They will enable in conducting studies into ways and means to augment the tourism potential of Goa. In the context of Goa, the institution of tourist guides is a basic component of the infrastructural requirement both for international and domestic tourism. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the international tourist arrivals in Goa. The Certificate Course may be offered by the selected degree colleges affiliated to Goa University, while the PG Diploma will be offered in the University Campus as an interdisciplinary course under self-financing scheme. The syllabus and academic and teaching schedule will be finalized during this academic year, 2012-13. The Chair in Goa University will also involve multi-stakeholders in Diaspora related issues and focus on building intellectual and scholarly networks. As the Goan Diaspora occupies a unique place in the history of Indian migrations, it is essential to concentrate on the trajectory, pace and pattern of Goan migratory experiences. The Chair proposes to contact different segments of Goan Diaspora, especially the seafarers, white-collar professionals and compile databases. In this connection, it is proposed to establish contacts with urban-based overseas Goan associations and identify areas of further research topics. It is proposed to to establish immediate contacts with the GOANET community and some of the prominent Goan associations abroad. The Chair proposes to undertake and prepare a Goan Migration-Resurvey Report. It is important to highlight the Gulf-dimension of Goan migrations and assess the impact on the socio-economic conditions at the micro-level. The socio-economic and cultural contribution of Goan Diaspora will also be analyzed. The UGC has approved the proposal of Diaspora Studies programme and sanctioned financial grant under Recurring and Non-Recurring heads for five years. So far under
[Goanet] FOREIGN JAUNTS
FOREIGN JAUNTS BEGIN? It is reported that Tourism minister along with Deputy CM and other government officials are planning a tour to Israel and other countries to study village tourism! In today's age where there is internet, video conferencing and Google maps to go there visually sitting at home, and navigate anywhere, with plenty of search engines to find any information needed,I am surprised that Parrikar is condoning this! We certainly condemn these sort of jaunts financed by the strained public exchequer and if it materializes,we would like to know what they learned that could not be intelligently studied from their offices, communication facilities and contacts in Goa and India, and how is it proposed to be applied to Goa. Also details of all expenditure incurred for this jaunt. Why are the Parivartan as promised, from the dirty habits of the previous government not evident and being firmly controlled ?

[Goanet] Religion or reality?
As India is reeling and shocked (for a time at least) at the recent rape, various weirdos give various weirdopinions. A black clad, white mustachioed dandhawala, gave his opinion [or future law] that all women myst be housewives. These follow a religion of ancestors which is dignified today. Then a religionist Swami said that the victime of the 6 wild humanoids who raped a Brahmin girl should have recited a mantra and called them brothers can animals seduced by a religion [including Islam and Christianity] a religion without reality or some LOGICAL FAITH have and common sense? Or a murder sense? Interestingly the rapists were all from their own propagated religion And when the christians in Khadamal were raped and slaughtered by Right Wing controlled by the paravarists NO ONE, made such a noise including the press. Until this day many are still suffering in Kandamal. There are other rape incidents which are not published or they just go unpublished. I know of a young lady, who was raped by her first cousin, he took her to a place and this process continued for months together. Only this poor woman knows what she went through. Not only that her whole personality is changed, there is no one to counsel her or care for her. She lived in Velha Goa and the rapist is now enjoying the Portuguese passport he made and lives in UK. The girl is still terrified when he comes to built his bugalow in the sausage factory he has established in Velha Goa. Many opinions go around, what about the Goan inquisition? They inserted objects, in peoples private holes, and pulled balls and shoved brinjals. (Check the web and Inquisition accounts) cause Religion. The opium of the people. This evil does not only decude your brains, but also transfers this part of the human anatomy elsewhere. They cover these evils with scarlet robes and fance hats. There is no difference between a black cap or a monsignos puple topee. Or is it there? And now our lawyers and old men are discussing PIDE, sitting in New Jersey, playing music and telling us how to dance. The lawyer writing stories, etc. When the Indian troops invaded Goa they raped my cousin teacher in north Goa. They threw and grenade and killed a young girl in Bogmalo. There were other excesses which went unreported. Cock and Bull stories are accepted by those who are gullible or idiots. Who is deceiving whom? Has anyone checked WHY these things have happened? Can a human heart be changed? Can we KNOW the One who created us and saw it was good and man has messed it up? And we are destroying ourselves? Killing girl child in the name of religion?
Re: [Goanet] Goans forced to be bharatis
Dear Bernado, Once again, another example of your brilliant logic! A plebiscite was not held in 1962; that would have given us Goans a chance to decide our own future. You say this was obviously the work of crooks and criminals who came into Goa by force in 1961. Then you complain about the Opinion Poll, which allowed us to keep our own identity rather than being submerged in Maharashtra. You say that this Poll, which helped us Goans, was also the work of crooks and criminals who came into Goa by force in1961. Are you secretly pro-Maharashtra, Bernado, the very thing you accused JC of being? Bernado! Bernado! Think, before you thimk! And thimk, before you write. Ay ay ay! Regards, anyway, for providing today's entertainment. Why was the opinion poll orchestrated, and that too in 1967. This could only be the work of crooks and criminals who came into Goa by force in 1961. BC For that matter .. HOW does anyone KNOW what the majority of Goans wanted in 1962? ? One can know that the majority of Goans residing in Goa did not want to renounce their decreed Indian citizenship, and register themselves as Portuguese nationals because they were given a chance to do this. For some this could be out of fear. But for many this was out of choice or indifference. In 1967 we know that 43.5% wanted to join the state of Maharashtra. So they could not have wanted to be Portuguese citizens or free themselves from India. Of the remaining 56.5%, 54.2% voted for Goa to remain a union territory of India. It is well known that a significant percentage of these wanted Goa to be a full fledged state within India. So even if a two-thirds majority of this segment wanted to secede from India, they would only amount to an overall minority of 36.1% against a coalition of 61.6% opting to remain Indian citizens. Cheers, Santosh
