[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Feast of the Assumption
7-Aug-2013 Dear Friend, Today, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption –Mary freed from death, gloriously taken to Heaven. To be a child of God is to live in freedom and grant others freedom as well. Mary was one who took God seriously and respected His choice of her and freely chose His plan as her own. Mary’s assumption reminds us that we are heaven-bound even if at times we feel our bondages. Have a joyful weekend celebrating Mary’s freedom in response to God and our own!! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections - Feast of the Assumption: “Mary, Our Model and Pride, Assumed into Heaven!” 15-Aug-2013 Readings: Rev. 11: 19; 12: 1-6, 101 Cor. 15: 20-27Luke 1: 39-56 The first reading from the Book of the Apocalypse speaks of the glory and majesty of God revealed through signs and wonders. The language is metaphorical and symbolic speaking to the heart rather than to the intellect. ‘A great sign appears in the heavens – a woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, with a crown with twelve stars adorning it’. Mary is deserving of all honour and praise but when she gives birth to her son, it is He who becomes the centre of attention. She flees from the desert and from the evil one to protect her son. God himself protects her and she is taken straight to God to her throne in heaven. Mary points to true freedom and to Christ her Son the source of all freedom. Let in from the back door! Once upon a time the Lord God went out on patrol of heaven just to make sure that it was still a city that worked. Every thing was fine, the hedges trimmed, the grass cut, the fountains clean, the gold and silver and ivory polished, the mall neat (Of course they have a mall in heaven. Where else would they put the teenagers!) He stopped to listen to the angels choirs sing and they were in great form. Then on one of the side streets he encountered people who had no business being in heaven at all. Some of them should have been serving a long sentence in purgatory, others would not get out until the day before the Last Judgement, still others would make it to heaven only on very special appeal. So he went out to complain to St. Peter: “You’ve let me down again,” he said “and you yourself with the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” “I have not.” said St. Peter. “Well, how did they get in?” “I didn’t let them in.” “Who did?” “You won’t like it.” “I have a right to know how they got in.” “Well, I turned them down and didn’t they go around to the back door and didn’t your mother let them in!” -Theologically, this story is of course nonsense. But as a story it reflects Mary’s role as reflecting the maternal love of God. Andrew Greeley Today’s gospel has two sections. They were differently composed and are different in character. The first section narrates the visit of Mary to the house of her cousin Elizabeth, whom she has come to visit and to serve during her pregnancy. The latter part is Mary’s personal prayer –The Magnificat- made on the special occasion of her meeting with Elizabeth, but it is also a universal prayer, one of the best loved prayers of the Church down the centuries. Mary’s importance is not limited to giving us hope about the after life; she gives every Christian hope in the growing struggle of daily life. In today’s gospel Luke portrays her as the one who glorifies God because “the almighty has done great things for me.” She is a woman of the people whose song delights in God’s choice of her, whose spirit soars because God has not overlooked this lowly handmaid. But she is also a dangerous woman because she is the one who voices the subversive hope of the poor and little ones. “He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly.” For many poor people, the song of Mary expresses their own hope in the liberating power of God. For them Mary is not alive in the statues and pictures but in the real powerful change that can be brought about in the world when God’s preferences and God’s choices are taken seriously. She is the little one, the lowly servant made great by the choice of God. Mary’s assumption reminds us that we are all heaven-bound and that God is our final destination. It is precisely in doing God’s will on earth will we reach our heavenly home. We have a mother in Heaven Marjorie’s teenage son, Jimmy, suddenly ran away from home one night just with the clothes he wore. Reports to the police drew a blank. Friends and acquaintances had no news whatsoever. As days grew into weeks, Marjorie’s fear grew worse. Just before Easter she went out shopping with her two younger children. Even as she moved from one store to another, one nagging thought occupied her mind –Where was Jimmy? Suddenly she heard the church bells ring. It was Good Friday. She decided to go to the church with the secret hope that her prayer would not only bring her some solace, but also the return of her son, Jimmy. As she knelt down to pray,

JoeGoaUk, You forgot Goanet! Turning 19 in a few weeks. Soon ending its teenage years! Young men who were part of it in 1994 have growing kids now. We in the middle have turned into grumpy old men. The seniors are making active plans for retirement. FN PS: As Richard Stallman would say, when you talk of free what do you mean? Free as in free beer? Or free as in free speech? Despite JC's many taunts, Goanet could claim to come close to providing both. (Emphasis on the word 'close'.) [Goanet] Surrender of Indian passport - navhindtimes.com
Surrender of Indian passport, EPIC, ration card mandatory for Portuguese citizenshipPublished on: August 8, 2013 - 02:05 More in: Goa NewsMARGAO: Cartao de Cidadao, the citizenship card issued by the Portuguese government is mandatory for seeking Portuguese passport but when any Indian gets Portuguese citizenship card paving way for a Portuguese passport, he has to surrender his ration card, election card and Indian passport in order to complete the process and get Indian residentship permit that is renewable. He can then apply for Indian visa based on the Portuguese passport, informs a famous service provider from Salcete who guides, assists and deals in making foreign and Indian passports. It was also disclosed by the service provider that the Indian government gives life-long visa on Portuguese passport. With craze for Portuguese passport ever growing, Salcete youth frequent such offices to inquire about the process of applying for Portuguese passports. “I wish to obtain a Portuguese passport to get the benefits of the European Economic Areas (EEA) which will help my children to seek higher studies. Admissions in higher studies can easily be obtained by Goans having Portuguese Cartao de Cidadao and the Portuguese passport,” said an elderly person, who visited one such office in Margao on Wednesday. He is keen on educating his two sons.Sources disclosed that it is an easy window for Goans to reach Europe and get the citizen card unlike other states of India without much ado and expenses.“For getting Portuguese citizenship card, the applicant should be of Goan origin; he has to prove record of residence and proof of identity. Based on these documents transcription of birth takes place and then the marriage is done. The Conservatoria Dos Registo Contrais - the concern department of the Portuguese government which issues the certificate, gives Acento De Nacimento confirming the registration and then issues the Cartao de Cidadao. Sources said that the Portuguese passport holders can stay in India but cannot avail benefits of government schemes nor are eligible for government jobs. It takes four to five months for a Goan who is born before 1961 to registrar his birth and marriage in Portugal, while for those who are born post1961 it takes lesser time. Most Goans seek Portuguese passport to earn better job, sources added. However interestingly, it is learnt that the high-risk line visas are issued only after paying huge amount as security is of prime concern in certain countries.

[Goanet] SORROWING LIES OUR GOA
Are We, Goans, so bankrupt in intellectual capacity and moral integrity, that we can’t find a Goan to head the Goa RTI Forum? It is time to bury that dream of Special Status for Goa? It is also very surprising that the Goa RTI Forum is not a registered body. So where is the transparency and accountability? The forum should lead by example and invoke all cannons of democracy in its functioning. Unless it is a story of ‘caged’ parrots. Sorrowing lies our Goa. [Goanet] Doles for the Senior citizens!
Dear Readers in Goa, As usual I read all the newspapers on line everyday, but today ( 8th Aug) all of a sudden Herald edition could not be read on line without a registration done for Rs.118/- per month. I do not understand why Herald has taken such a drastic decision. Whether the sales have gone down or the standard of the paper is not upto the mark? I think Parrikar Government should give some doles for Aam Admi and the senior citizens to read the newspapers, as they get a meager pension or no pension. With such a rise of essential commodities, no proper electricity, intermittent potable water supply, no proper garbage collection, parking in the city for 2 and 4 wheelers is impossible in the city where Parrikar himself is Panjim MLA, no chance to get a slot for parking as we have to go round and round to find a place, which makes fuel to consume, thefts, crimes, suicides, rapes is everyday affair, No employment for Goans without bribes. High taxes for housing. Bad roads. etc.etc that has become our fate. These corrupt politicians have minted money at our cost. In future we should carefully study them before electing/voting them in power. In our olden days we had a decent living. Now plenty of outsiders have built huge bungalows in Goa, and lots of high rise buildings have come up for them to reside in the flats. One day they will outbid us. Goans will remain in their own ancestral housing. Stephen Dias D.Paula

[Goanet] No 5 star morsels for Goa pigs - goanvoice.org.uk/oneindia.in
Panaji, Aug 8: Pigs reared in Goa will no longer get to eat the choicest leftovers from five-star hotels. A recent order by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has banned all the 36 five-star hotels in the coastal tourist state from back-channelling leftovers, veggy and fruit peels and pulp to piggeries citing pollution concerns. What is happening is that the waste generated at five-star hotels is now merely being dumped at these piggeries. It's very messy. Some piggeries even have dumps of garbage, GSPCB chairman Jose Noronha told reporters Thursday. Pork, along with beef, is standard cuisine for the Christians in Goa, who account for nearly 30 percent of the state's population. Most Goan villages still have rudimentary piggeries, which slaughter pigs for sale in the local market. Tourism and an increasing demand for pork has also spurred the setting up of modern piggeries which often have tie-ups with five-star hotels for pig food, mainly wet, organic garbage generated in the hotel kitchens, which cater to thousands of guests and employees everyday. Noronha now says that hotels need to do more as far as garbage management was concerned and that many hotels, who have the mandatory equipment for garbage management, simply do not use it. They prefer sending their garbage to piggeries, instead, he said. We noticed these lapses during some inspections. Therefore, the order has been issued banning all five-star hotels from sending their garbage to these piggeries, he said. On Aug 8, 2013, at 6:28 AM, Stephen Dias steve.dia...@gmail.com wrote about the status of our once Golden Goa as it is in 2013 with: thefts, crimes, suicides, rapes is everyday affair, No employment for Goans without bribes. In future we should carefully study them before electing/voting them in power. And is nostalgic that In our olden days we had a decent living COMMENT: Ah Steve, While what you are writing is factual, you believe that our Goan ostriches will believe you? Those in Goa, are trying very hard to make it - despite the odds. They are catching hell and calling it a good time . and proud about it. Those in phorenn, are in this la la land believing that their 'lobbying' will bring about any beneficial change to Goa and Goans, esp the seniors who have given their sweat to and for Goa and now are faced with the rising cost of living and a life in fear from these criminals who have now intruded -as a right, Thanks to the so called Librashunists. [Goanet] Livin' the Impromptu Life
This article is from the blog res gestae (www.rajivndesai.blogspot.com http://www.rajivndesai.blogspot.com/ ) you can reach the person managing the list at i...@comma.in SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 2013 http://rajivndesai.blogspot.in/2013/08/livin-impromptu-life.html Livin' the Impromptu Life On the Spiritual Roots of Loafing. There is a deeply spiritual element in spurning ritual to do something completely different: it's liberating, this idea that you can just go off the grid. Call it going AWOL. No permissions taken; no explanations provided. This is not about vacation or travel. There aren't any surveys or statistics to cite but it's a pretty good guess that not everyone can or wants to do it. It is an attitude that for me has begun to take hold as I grow older. Maybe it stems from a growing awareness that in the end, everyone goes AWOL. No; this is not a lament about growing old or a nervous look at death. On the contrary, it's about life and joy and sensual pleasures; about the free spirit and the liberated mind that enables the impromptu life. Periodic trips to Goa fall in that category. They let us explore the elasticity of time in which breakfast is on the table and every bite of buttered poi(Goan bread) with homemade jam satisfies so much you think you'll never have lunch. Thinking of lunch while eating your breakfast is the impromptu state of mind in which minutes expand to fill an hour; the same minutes disappear in a fleet rush of seconds to leave you breathless, as you finish the clams or put down the book. In the end, you become so embroiled in non-purposive activity that you lose track of time and begin to live on the wax and wane of nature: sunlight, moonlight, stars, dusk, dawn, rain, breezes, birdsong, rustling palms and the scent of the sea. You lounge, you laze, go on long drives; read books and magazines all day or go to the beach and watch the Arabian Sea churn and roil in the Monsoon or gently roll at other times. You look for exciting new restaurants, cafes and watering holes; hook up with local friends and shoot the breeze late into the night; catch a movie at Panjim's slick Inox cinema and in the auditorium, eat bhel instead of popcorn. Eventually, when the sojourn draws to a close, you are refreshed and ready to look routine in the eye. That lasts a few weeks; then the soul begins to stir; your mind turns once again to the impromptu life in Goa and the serene experience of green rice fields, large rivers, lovely beaches, calamari, clams, shrimp and beer. So you go back again and spend another few days, unmindful of time. In that sense, it is a slice of immortality. As you grow older and begin to see life's finite horizon, such experiences gain in importance. You realize you may have done okay for yourself if, in your later life, you can indulge in such spiritual pursuits. As you plan another journey into timelessness, thoughts hearken ahead to the new restaurant that's just opened; succulent figs for breakfast; shrimp curry and rice for lunch; for dinner, chilly fry; dessert, custard apple ice cream; pickled green peppers in the fridge and the very dry vodka martini which their corns will flavor. But wait.why can't we disrupt routine more often? Is the impromptu life only available in Goa or some other such idyllic place? Of course not; it is a state of mind, as I recently discovered. Having slept over at our house on a Sunday not too long ago, our granddaughter awoke early and climbed into our bed, making sweet sounds in her own dialect: Wake up, sleepy head, she seemed to be saying. My eyes opened and she smiled. I knew immediately then, Monday or not, there was no going to the office, no newspaper.even my tea remained undrunk. Soon we were in the garden, chasing after birds and chipmunks. Of course, they disappeared; so we spent time scanning the skies and trees, whistling, gesticulating, making noises: trying to lure them back. Finally, the sapping heat got to me so we shifted the impromptu show indoors and went upstairs to sit directly in front of the air conditioner. Then she happened on the remote control. Well, if we were going to watch TV, I felt Discovery HD was the best option for a stunning visual and learning experience. Except that we came upon the Cartoon Network while surfing.and lo and behold, it was the Tom and Jerry show, with Brahms' Hungarian Dances as the soundtrack. So heads leaning together we watched as Jerry outwitted the cat every which way. Another work afternoon, we took her to a playground in a nearby mall where she climbed up slides from bottom to top and ran around among the ingenious sprays that kept the place cool with their mist on a sultry day. Equally thoughtful were the soft cork board tiles that lined the playground.no scraped knees or elbows, no tears, no fears. Then last week, we took the time out of a weekday morning to take go swimming with her. There was a time when even a

[Goanet] Nuvem church
Nuvem Church In heritage list? We should preserve the heritage, as it is an identity to be admired and a monument of architecture, There are monuments listed as heritage buildings and there are heritage zones. It applies to both to private and public structures The authorities do not permit to recklessly vandalise these selective landmarks The plans are approved and original external facade is not allowed to be changed The ecclesiastical authorities in Goa too are strict about maintaining at least the external appearance and not altering the altars. Now the biggest monstrosity that has gone uncommented or objected to is the portico outside the Nuvem Curch. The Govt. also provides maintenance of these heritage sites. The people of Nuvem and its parishioners are the ones, who have to decide first. Th e renovation or demolition is more in the nature of public debate of architecture, rather than the need for more accommodation. The portico is for outstanding Catholics on the occasion of days of obligations and other feasts. The place cannot contain the faithful and who are over flowing. The priest shout from pulpits requesting church goers to be inside, How the Church can accommodate the ever-growing population of faithful? Is there a need to expand and if so how? In the controversy that is now raging, there is not much light on the interiors,. or the need to preserve. Is remaining outside the house of God, during services the best option for the faithful of Nuvem.? The place of worship must be able to accommodate at least the locals comfortably without distractions of any kind. This is the least facility that must be ensured for spiritual concentrations Many new churches, chapels reconstructed or built incorporate the best available from all over. In this way new heritage is created too, Look at Bambolim cross church, Grace church at Margao , and Church at Benaulim incorporating nothing so called our heritage, except may the tiles on the roofs.and are recognised as new land marks Our ancestral houses have been demolished to build concrete jungles to increase space or for commercial purposes and nobody raise a finger about preserving heritage The best suggestions must provide for the need of the faithful of Nuvem, if need be by maintaining what is best to be retained .To day technology for relocation, modification, reconstruction is available to suit the connoisseurs of heritage buffs The beautiful landmarks in structures the world over are a type of creating a new heritage of wonder and admiration Nobody seemed to be overtly concerned about the accommodation, the absolute need ,for which the parishioners are the best judges. Leave it to them Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] Talk with army or ISI
Talks with Pakistan or Army and ISI? Ever since the creation of Pakistan, the enmity between the two Nations has only escalated. All efforts of talks and good will have been misunderstood to bleed India through low intensity proxy war. There has been no thaw in relations of any significant progress in spite of diplomatic exchanges at all levels. In a good will gesture India repatriated 90. 000 prisoners of wars of East Pakistan without any bargain. India withdraws from occupied places in Pakistan after bloody wars at the great costs of human life and war expenses. Again India did not extract any bargain in return and these are measures of good gestures. Pakistan never considered these moves as worthy of any obligation, in fact its stand hardened for more revenge The bus journey of A,B Vajpayee was rewarded with the Kargil war of intrusion. The Bombay attack, the be headings, attack on Parliament, Kandahar plane high jacking incident returning of bodies without internal organs, killing of prisoners, Bombay bomb blasts etc are other countless instances of Pakistan insensitivity and continuous acts of war. Pakistan was overtaken by the army at least four times. The Nawab Shariff Govt. appears to be cosying up to rouge elements in variety of ways both overt and covert; The Indian Govt. should initiate talks with the army and ISI, who are real masters of administrations in Pakistan. The recent instant of ambush and killing of 5 Indian soldiers have outraged the feelings of the Indians at large. It is true that Pakistan acts covertly for being caught and nailed, as army involvement, but that does not mean that Defence Minister provide them with an escape route .Hence the defence of state actors, terrorists, home grown is too familiar cliche of explanation and justification Pakistan has never and will ever admit of its complicity in bleeding India and hence it is futile exercise to make them see reason and decency. All exchanges, trade, people to people contacts, have been half hearted measures that have not resulted into any permanent out comes of lasting friendly ,trustworthy relations. In fact Pakistan is mistaking our extending them arms of friendship as sign of weakness, indecision's and lacking spine. The Jihadi elements are provoking India for an open armed confrontation, which bait has been resisted in spite of tooth for tooth retaliation philosophy P,M silence and going back on his statement that business will not be as usual and still not abandoned the agenda of high level talks In USA with Nawab Sharif. The opposition is not at fault to recommend less summit meetings without the guarantee of results It is the Indian Army which bears the brunt of attacks and the family of dead soldiers. If war is not the option to what extent the diplomatic exchanges even at the highest levels produced results, India has shown total inconsistency, under foreign pressures in resuming talks. India cannot live with a hostile neighbour and the luxury of soft talks as an alternative has fooled us all along Tough measures are called for from now on in consultations with all National parties and others Obama ,as an example has cut off talks at the meeting with Putin in Moscow after the grant of asylum to Snowdem No talks until the perpetrators of Bombay attack are brought to book has seen a shameless U Turn once again On the contrary the Defence Minister has provide an alibi to Pakistan, by assuming attackers of 5 killed jawans were terrorists dressed in Pakistan army fatigues India must act in one voice and ruling combine must not dither on its responsibility merely for electoral politics of appeasement and soft approach Nelson Lopes Chinchinim Like https://www.facebook.com/nelson.lopes.779/posts/550466658348944# · · Unfollow Posthttps://www.facebook.com/nelson.lopes.779/posts/550466658348944# · Sharhttps://www.facebook.com/ajax/sharer/?s=22appid=25554907596p%5B0%5D=11568433387p%5B1%5D=550466658348944profile_id=11568433387share_source_type=unknown

Samir Kelekar wrote: what parochial? If he has to be true to his American citizenship, he has to raise the dollar to 100 rupees, not lower it. Where does his allegiance lie? This is an obvious conflict of interest. samir, We live in a global village now. The best man for any job lives just an email away. The best employers here in the west have talent scouts whose only responsibility is to secure high caliber talent. I just read an article written by the head of one of Canada's top five banks where he mentioned that on his first month as head of the bank, he identified the top four prospects for him to hand over his legacy i.e. in about seven years time. The bank head needed that amount of time to groom people capable of handling the job. As for your question of where the new BOI Governor's allegiance lies, let me explain it this way. Three Canadian citizens have returned to their countries in Europe to become Prime Ministers or head of government there. One of these had run away from her country a refuge, only to be invited back to become the President. The candidate moving across the world for the new job, is giving up a good one for the challenge of another. If he does a good job, he gets plum assignments later. If he fails, he becomes unemployable in two countries. In Africa people who had been working for the World Bank or IMF for decades are now returning to become President of their country. The main concern among African voters is whether the person is qualified to make improvements to the living standards of the citizens. Those opposing the return of such qualified economists come up with a strange bag of objections, my favourite being, He has lived outside the country for 20 years, what does he know about whats going on here. As long as a position calls for academic qualifications and experience, one has to hire the best qualified candidate regardless of what travel documents he is holding. The problem, the real problem, the one that you and I really have to watch out for is when the candidates qualification is that he was born on an auspicious day, on a house facing the east, and is the third child of a priest. Oh! and his father was friends with the last three PM's of India. Mervyn
